-(으)려던 참이다 Grammar in Korean: Meaning and How to Use It

-(으)려던 참이다 grammar is the Korean sentence ending pattern for "I was just about to," as in 지금 전화하려던 참이었어요 ("I was just about to call you"). You attach it to a verb stem to say that the action was a moment away when something happened or someone spoke. The pattern is about a very short time, so it is not a general way to state a plan.

What you'll learn

  • Attach -(으)려던 참이다 to any action verb and say the polite form from memory.
  • Say "I was just about to" when someone reminds you of a task.
  • Use 참에 for "just as I was about to."
  • Tell this pattern apart from -(으)려고 하다, which covers longer intentions.

Before you start: you should know how to find a verb stem, how to make the intention ending -(으)려고 ("in order to; intend to"), and the polite copula 이에요. If -(으)려고 is new, read the lesson on -(으)려고 하다 first. Audio plays only when you press a button.

What Does -(으)려던 참이다 Grammar Mean?

-(으)려던 참이다 grammar means "I was just about to" and, in the present, "I'm just about to." It names the moment before an action begins. The speaker usually says it to explain that an action is not late or not unplanned: "I was already on my way to doing it."

Here are the first two examples. The pattern is the same in both.

  • 지금 전화하려던 참이었어요. (jigeum jeonhwaharyeodeon chamieosseoyo.) [지금 전화하려던 차미어써요] = "I was just about to call you."
  • 나가려던 참인데 비가 오네요. (nagaryeodeon chaminde biga oneyo.) [나가려던 차민데 비가 오네요] = "I was just about to go out, but it's raining."

Look at the pieces. 전화하려던 is the verb 전화하다 with -(으)려던, a form of the intention ending -(으)려고 with the past-looking ending -던. 참 is a noun that means "the moment" or "the point of time." 이었어요 is the past of 이다, "it was." Literally, 전화하려던 참이었어요 is "it was the moment of wanting to call." The ending -던 looks back at an unfinished state, so the pattern pictures a moment that was cut short or still hangs in the air. The word 참 here is a different word from the adverb 참, which means "really" (참 좋아요, "It's really good"). First, the formation.

How Do You Form -(으)려던 참이다?

-(으)려던 참이다 is formed in three steps: take the verb stem, add -(으)려던, and then add 참이다 in the style you need. After a vowel add -려던, and after a consonant add -으려던. A stem that ends in ㄹ keeps its ㄹ and takes -려던, in the same way it takes -려고.

Dictionary form Stem + -(으)려던 Polite (present) Polite (past)

The table shows one rule applied to seven verbs. Write 참 and the copula after it as separate from the verb: 가려던 참이에요. The sound also shifts a little: 참이에요 is spoken [차미에요], because the ㅁ moves to the next syllable. The next three parts look at the groups of stems one at a time.

Stems Ending in a Vowel

A vowel stem takes -려던 directly. 가다 becomes 가려던, 자다 becomes 자려던, 전화하다 becomes 전화하려던, and 도착하다 becomes 도착하려던.

  • 막 집에 가려던 참이에요. (mak jibe garyeodeon chamieyo.) [막 지베 가려던 차미에요] = "I am just about to go home."
  • 지금 막 도착하려던 참이에요. (jigeum mak dochakaryeodeon chamieyo.) [지금 막 도차카려던 차미에요] = "I am just about to arrive."

The little word 막 ("just now; at this moment") often appears before the verb to stress the closeness of the moment. Vowel stems are the simplest case. A stem with a final consonant needs the extra 으.

Stems Ending in a Consonant

A consonant stem adds -으려던 as a separate syllable. 먹다 becomes 먹으려던, 읽다 becomes 읽으려던, and 앉다 becomes 앉으려던. The syllable 으 links the stem to 려던.

  • 점심을 먹으려던 참이에요. (jeomsimeul meogeuryeodeon chamieyo.) [점시믈 머그려던 차미에요] = "I am just about to eat lunch."
  • 책을 읽으려던 참인데 불이 꺼졌어요. (chaegeul ilgeuryeodeon chaminde buri kkeojyeosseoyo.) [채글 일그려던 차민데 부리 꺼저써요] = "I was about to read, but the lights went out."

In 읽으려던, the final cluster ㄺ splits when a vowel follows: the ㄹ stays with 읽 and the ㄱ moves forward, so you hear [일그려던]. Two more groups need a short note, because learners expect trouble with them.

Irregular Stems and Nouns

Irregular stems change as they do before any ending that starts with 으.

  • ㄹ-stems keep their ㄹ and take -려던: 만들다 becomes 만들려던, and 살다 becomes 살려던. 저녁을 만들려던 참이었는데 재료가 없었어요 (jeonyeogeul mandeullyeodeon chamieonneunde jaeryoga eopseosseoyo) [저녀글 만들려던 차미언는데 재료가 업써써요], "I was about to cook dinner, but there were no ingredients."
  • ㄷ-irregular: 듣다 becomes 들으려던, because ㄷ becomes ㄹ before a vowel.
  • ㅂ-irregular: 돕다 becomes 도우려던, because ㅂ becomes 우 before 으.
  • 르-irregular: 부르다 becomes 부르려던, because the stem does not change before 려.

The pattern needs an action verb, so adjectives (피곤하다, "to be tired") and the copula do not take it. A noun can only join if it is made into an action verb with 하다, as in 청소하다 or 출발하다. With the formation clear, one full sentence can be built step by step.

Worked Example: Building a Sentence with -(으)려던 참이다

-(으)려던 참이다 grammar turns a plain action into "I was just about to do it." Follow the steps with the statement "I leave right now."

  1. Start with the plain sentence. 지금 막 나가요. (jigeum mak nagayo.) = "I'm leaving right now." The predicate is the verb 나가다.
  2. Find the dictionary form and stem. 나가요 comes from 나가다. The stem is 나가.
  3. Add -(으)려던. The stem ends in a vowel, so add -려던: 나가려던.
  4. Add 참이었어요. 나가려던 + 참이었어요 = 나가려던 참이었어요. The past copula shows that the speaker looks back at the moment.
  5. Rebuild the sentence. 지금 막 나가려던 참이었어요. (jigeum mak nagaryeodeon chamieosseoyo.) [지금 막 나가려던 차미어써요] = "I was just about to leave."

Sentence

지금막나가려던참이었어요

You will know it worked when the stem stayed in place and the predicate gained 려던 참이었어요. The most common slip at step 3 is using the present modifier: 나가는 참이에요 is a real sentence, but it means "I'm in the middle of leaving," not "I'm about to." Each sentence can also appear in several tenses and sentence types, and each has limits.

Which Tenses and Sentence Types Work with -(으)려던 참이다?

-(으)려던 참이다 works in the present and the past, in questions and in every speech style. The negative is rare. The part that changes is the copula 이다, while the verb part stays the same. The table shows the forms for 가다.

Sentence type Form Meaning
Present, right now 가려던 참이에요 I am just about to go.
Past 가려던 참이었어요 I was just about to go.
Background clause 가려던 참인데 / 가려던 참이었는데 I was just about to go, but...
"Just as" 가려던 참에 just as I was about to go
Question 가려던 참이에요? Are you just about to go?
Honorific 가시려던 참이에요 (Respected person) is just about to go.
Formal 가려던 참입니다 I am just about to go (formal).
Casual (banmal) 가려던 참이야 I'm just about to go (to a friend).
Plain written style 가려던 참이다 (He) is just about to go.
Denial 가려던 참이 아니었어요 I was not about to go.

The most common sentence follows a pattern: a reminder or a question, then the answer. The speaker gives an answer that shows the action is already close.

  • A: 숙제 했어요? B: 지금 하려던 참이에요. = "Did you do your homework?" "I was just about to."
  • 어, 저도 지금 말하려던 참이었어요. (eo, jeodo jigeum malharyeodeon chamieosseoyo.) [어 저도 지금 말하려던 차미어써요] = "Oh, I was just about to say that too."
  • 자려던 참에 친구한테서 전화가 왔어요. (jaryeodeon chame chinguhanteseo jeonhwaga wasseoyo.) [자려던 차메 친구한테서 전화가 와써요] = "Just as I was about to sleep, a friend called."

The second pattern, 참에, turns the moment into a time marker, "at the moment when." Notice that the sentence after 참에 describes what happened. The next section compares this pattern with its closest neighbour.

How Is -(으)려던 참이다 Different from -(으)려고 하다?

-(으)려던 참이다 and -(으)려고 하다 both come from the intention ending -(으)려고, but they have different ranges. -(으)려고 하다 states an intention of any length: you may have meant to do something for a week. -(으)려던 참이다 picks out the single moment right before the action.

Point -(으)려고 하다 -(으)려던 참이다
Core idea intend to; be about to was just about to
Time span any, from now to months the moment before the action
Typical use plans, goals, near events reacting to a reminder or an interruption
Subject people, and also events (비가 오려고 해요) people who can act
Past meaning "I meant to (and maybe did not)" "I was on the point of doing it (right then)"
Example 지금 전화하려고 해요. 지금 전화하려던 참이에요.

Both sentences about the call are correct. The first says "I intend to call now," and the second says "I'm just about to call." If you want to say "I was going to call you this morning but forgot," use 전화하려고 했는데 잊어버렸어요. That sentence does not fit 참이었어요, because 참 requires the moment itself. A second neighbour is -(으)ㄹ 생각이다, which states a thought-out plan, and a third is -(으)ㄹ 셈이다. These contrasts lead to the variations of the pattern itself.

Variations and Edge Cases of -(으)려던 참이다

-(으)려던 참이다 has four common variations: the casual and formal endings, the background form with -인데, the form with 참에 and a reply to a suggestion. Each one is short, and each appears in real conversation.

  • Casual. To a friend, use 참이야: 지금 전화하려던 참이야 (jigeum jeonhwaharyeodeon chamiya) [지금 전화하려던 차미야], "I'm just about to call."
  • Formal. In a work setting, use 참입니다: 막 출발하려던 참입니다 (mak chulbalharyeodeon chamimnida) [막 출발하려던 차밈니다], "We are just about to depart."
  • Background form. Add -인데 or -이었는데 to set the scene for the next clause: 청소하려던 참이었는데 엄마가 먼저 하셨어요 (cheongsoharyeodeon chamieonneunde eommaga meonjeo hasyeosseoyo) [청소하려던 차미언는데 엄마가 먼저 하셔써요], "I was about to clean, but Mom did it first."
  • A reply to a suggestion. When someone proposes the thing you were about to do, 마침 ("just in time; as it happens") fits: 마침 저도 연락하려던 참이었어요 (machim jeodo yeollakaryeodeon chamieosseoyo) [마침 저도 열라카려던 차미어써요], "I was just about to contact you too."

Two related patterns also use 참: -는 참이다 ("I am in the middle of doing") and -(으)ㄹ 참이다 ("I am planning to do it, as of now"). They are less common, and this lesson does not cover them. The mistakes below show where the boundaries cause real errors.

What Mistakes Do Learners Make with -(으)려던 참이다?

What mistakes do learners make with -(으)려던 참이다?
What mistakes do learners make with -(으)려던 참이다?

Learners most often get the time span, the word class or the ending wrong. Four mistakes appear again and again.

  1. Using it for a long-term plan. 내년에 한국에 가려던 참이에요 sounds wrong, because next year is not the moment before the action. Say 내년에 한국에 가려고 해요 or 내년에 한국에 갈 생각이에요.
  2. Using it with an adjective. 피곤하려던 참이에요 is wrong, because the pattern needs an action. To talk about a change of state, use a verb form instead: 피곤해지기 시작했어요 means "I started to get tired."
  3. Dropping the 던. 나가려고 참이에요 is wrong. The pattern needs -(으)려던 with the ㄷ, not -(으)려고.
  4. Spelling the copula wrongly. After the consonant ㅁ of 참, the polite copula is 이에요, so 참이에요 is correct and 참이예요 is wrong.

A quick check for any sentence with this pattern: Is the verb an action the speaker can start? Is the moment just before the action? Does the verb end in -(으)려던 and does 참 follow it? If all three answers are yes, the sentence is sound.

The practice set below tests these points directly.

Practice and Answers

Try the four items before you read the answer key. Cover the answers with your hand.

  1. Translate. "I was just about to eat lunch." Use 먹다 and 점심.
  2. Choose the reply. A friend asks 숙제 했어요? You have not started yet. Which reply fits? (지금 하려던 참이에요 / 내년에 하려던 참이에요)
  3. Form the pattern. Say "I was just about to cook dinner" with 만들다.
  4. Write your own. Say that you were just about to leave, using 나가다 or another verb.

Read the examples and check your answer.

  1. What does 지금 전화하려던 참이었어요 mean?

    1. I will call tomorrow.
    2. I was just about to call.
    3. I called yesterday.
    Show answer

I was just about to call.

-(으)려던 참이었어요 means "was just about to." The action had not started yet.

  2. A friend asks 숙제 했어요? You have not started yet. Which reply fits?

    1. 어제 하려던 참이에요.
    2. 내년에 하려던 참이에요.
    3. 지금 하려던 참이에요.
    Show answer

    지금 하려던 참이에요.

The pattern is for the moment just before the action, so 지금 fits and a time far away does not.

  3. What is the correct form of 먹다 in 점심을 ___ 참이에요?

    1. 먹려던
    2. 먹었려던
    3. 먹으려던
    Show answer

    먹으려던

A consonant stem needs the extra 으: 먹으려던.

  4. What is the correct form of 만들다 in 저녁을 ___ 참이었어요?

    1. 만들려던
    2. 만들으려던
    3. 만드려던
    Show answer

    만들려던

A stem that ends in ㄹ keeps its ㄹ and takes -려던: 만들려던.

  5. Which word cannot take -(으)려던 참이다?

    1. 가다
    2. 피곤하다
    3. 읽다
    Show answer

    피곤하다

The pattern needs an action verb. 피곤하다 is an adjective ("to be tired").

  6. How is 참인데 pronounced in 가려던 참인데?

    1. [참인데]
    2. [찬인데]
    3. [차민데]
    Show answer

    [차민데]

The ㅁ of 참 moves to the next syllable, so 참인데 is spoken [차민데].

  7. Which sentence correctly states a plan for next year?

    1. 내년에 갈 계획이에요.
    2. 내년에 가려던 참이에요.
    3. 내년에 가려고 참이에요.
    Show answer

    내년에 갈 계획이에요.

Next year is not the moment before the action. 가려던 참이에요 only suits a moment right now, and 가려고 참이에요 is not a valid form.

Answer key

  1. 점심을 먹으려던 참이었어요. The stem 먹 ends in a consonant, so add -으려던.
  2. 지금 하려던 참이에요. The reply must show a moment just before the action.
  3. 저녁을 만들려던 참이었어요. The ㄹ of 만들 stays.
  4. 지금 막 나가려던 참이었어요. (jigeum mak nagaryeodeon chamieosseoyo.) = "I was just about to leave." Answers vary. Check that the verb has -(으)려던 before 참.

If you can complete items 1 to 3 without the key, you can use the pattern in conversation. Next, the lesson hands off to related patterns.

What Should You Learn Next after -(으)려던 참이다 Grammar?

After -(으)려던 참이다 grammar, learn the general intention ending, then the neutral plan. This lesson teaches the moment just before an action, and it does not cover the larger set of ways to describe a plan. Those live on their own pages.

  1. Start with -(으)려고 하다, the general "intend to; about to."
  2. Compare it with -(으)ㄹ 생각이다, the thought-out plan, and -(으)ㄹ 셈이다, the plan with attitude.
  3. Continue with -(으)ㄹ까 하다, the loose "I'm thinking maybe I will."
  4. Return to Desire and Wishes to see every lesson in this set, or to the Advanced Grammar list for other B2 patterns.

With these steps, -(으)려던 참이다 becomes automatic: take the verb stem, add -(으)려던 참이었어요, and keep the action as close as a moment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does -(으)려던 참이다 mean?

-(으)려던 참이다 means "I was just about to." 지금 전화하려던 참이었어요 means "I was just about to call you," and 나가려던 참인데 비가 오네요 means "I was just about to go out, but it's raining." The action had not started yet, and the moment was very close.

How do I attach -(으)려던 참이다 to a verb or adjective?

Add -려던 to a verb stem that ends in a vowel (가다 becomes 가려던) and -으려던 to a stem that ends in a consonant (먹다 becomes 먹으려던). ㄹ-stems keep their ㄹ (만들려던). Then add 참이다 and conjugate it: 참이에요, 참이었어요. It is used with action verbs, not with adjectives.

Can -(으)려던 참이다 be used in the past tense?

Yes, and the past is the most common use. 참이었어요 means "I was just about to": 지금 전화하려던 참이었어요. The present form 참이에요 is also used when the moment is right now: 막 집에 가려던 참이에요 means "I'm just about to go home." The -던 inside the pattern looks back from the point of view of the interruption.

Is -(으)려던 참이다 used in speech or only in writing?

It is mostly a spoken pattern. People use it to answer a reminder ("Have you done it?") or to react when someone suggests the very thing they were about to do. With friends, say 참이야, and with others, say 참이에요. In formal speech, 참입니다 appears.

What is the most common mistake with -(으)려던 참이다?

The most common mistake is using it for a longer plan, as in 내년에 한국에 가려던 참이에요. The pattern is only for the moment just before an action. For plans, use -(으)려고 하다 or -(으)ㄹ 생각이다. A second mistake is using it with an adjective: 피곤하려던 참이에요 is wrong.

What is the difference between -(으)려던 참이다 and -(으)려고 하다?

-(으)려고 하다 states an intention that can last a long time ("I intend to") or a near event ("is about to"). -(으)려던 참이다 is narrower: it is the very moment before the action. 전화하려고 했어요 means "I meant to call," maybe hours earlier, while 전화하려던 참이었어요 means "I was on the point of calling right then."
