What you'll learn
- Build -(으)ㄹ 바에는 with the right space and the right sound.
- Use it for "if I have to X, I'd rather Y" and "if I'm doing it anyway, do it well".
- Remember the fixed phrases 이럴 바에는 and 그럴 바에는.
- Choose between -(으)ㄹ 바에는 and -느니 (차라리).
Prerequisites: the modifier ending -(으)ㄹ and the endings -겠어요 and -(으)ㄹ래요. Time: about 15 minutes.
Key facts
- -(으)ㄹ 바에는 compares two imperfect choices and picks the better one.
- The form is verb stem + (으)ㄹ + space + 바에는.
- 바 is a bound noun, so it is spelled as a separate word and said as [빠].
- It has no past tense. The main clause names the better choice.
- The short form is 바엔, and the stronger form is 바에야.
Listen to two model sentences.
The next section defines the pattern.
What Does -(으)ㄹ 바에는 Grammar Mean?
-(으)ㄹ 바에는 means "if I have to do X" or "if I'm going to do X at all". A connective ending is a word ending that joins one clause to the next. -(으)ㄹ 바에는 is not a single word ending but a small phrase: a modifier, a bound noun and a particle. The phrase works like one connector and links a hypothetical action to a better choice.
Two feelings appear in real use.
- "I'd rather ..." Both options are unattractive, and the second is less bad. 살 바에는 차라리 빌릴래요: "If I have to buy it, I'd rather rent."
- "If I do it anyway, do it well." The action is going to happen, so the speaker asks for quality. 할 바에는 제대로 하는 게 낫겠어요: "If I'm going to do it, I'd better do it properly."
| Part | 할 바에는 제대로 하는 게 낫겠어요. | 살 바에는 차라리 빌릴래요. |
|---|---|---|
| Hypothetical action | 할 바에는 (if I'm going to do it) | 살 바에는 (if I have to buy it) |
| Better choice | 제대로 하는 게 낫겠어요 (doing it properly is better) | 차라리 빌릴래요 (I'd rather rent) |
| Spoken | [할빠에는 제대로 하는 게 낟께써요] | [살빠에는 차라리 빌릴래요] |
| RR (aid) | hal baeneun jedaero haneun ge natgesseoyo | sal baeneun charari billillaeyo |
| English | If I'm going to do it, I'd better do it properly. | If I have to buy it, I'd rather rent. |
Notice the pronunciation of 바. After the modifier ending ㄹ, the ㅂ of 바 is tensed and sounds like ㅃ, so the phrase is said [할빠에는] and [살빠에는]. The spelling still uses ㅂ. Revised Romanization (RR) does not mark tensing that comes from a neighbouring sound, so it writes hal baeneun.
The next section shows how to build the form.
How Do You Form -(으)ㄹ 바에는?
Remove 다 from the dictionary form to get the stem. The stem is the verb without its dictionary ending -다. For 먹다 the stem is 먹. Then add the future modifier -(으)ㄹ: ㄹ after a vowel or ㄹ, and 을 after another consonant. Write a space, then 바에는.
| Dictionary form | Stem | Stem + -(으)ㄹ 바에는 | Spoken | RR (aid) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 맡기다 (leave in someone's care) | 맡기 | 맡길 바에는 | [맏낄빠에는] | matgil baeneun |
The consonant at the end of the stem moves to the next syllable in speech, so 먹을 바에는 sounds like [머글빠에는]. RR spells such words by what you hear, so it writes meogeul baeneun. Each word of the phrase is romanised separately, because RR does not apply sound changes across a space.
Why a Space?
The word 바 is a bound noun. A bound noun is a noun that cannot stand alone and always needs a modifier before it. In standard spelling a bound noun is written as a separate word, so the phrase is 할 바에는, not 할바에는. The particle 에 and the topic particle 는 attach to 바 with no space.
In speech, however, the whole phrase flows together: [할빠에는]. In the brackets on this page, the bound noun joins the modifier because the tensed ㅃ is said right after it: [할빠에는].
Stems Ending in a Vowel or ㄹ
Vowel stems take ㄹ: 가 + ㄹ = 갈, 사 + ㄹ = 살. A stem that already ends in ㄹ keeps it and adds nothing: 만들 바에는, 살 바에는 (for 살다 "live"). It is the same pattern as the future 갈 거예요.
Stems Ending in Another Consonant
Other consonants take 을: 먹을 바에는, 읽을 바에는. Contrast this with -느니, which needs no helping vowel at all.
Irregular Verbs
Irregular verbs follow the future modifier. 돕다 becomes 도울 바에는, 듣다 becomes 들을 바에는, and 모르다 becomes 모를 바에는. The ㅂ-irregular change and the ㄷ-irregular change both happen, because 을 begins with a vowel.
The Fixed Phrases 이럴 바에는 and 그럴 바에는
Two phrases are common. 이럴 바에는 means "if it is going to be like this", and 그럴 바에는 means "if that is the case". They come from the adjectives 이렇다 and 그렇다. 이럴 바에는 차라리 그만두자 means "If it is going to be like this, let's just quit."
The next section builds a full sentence.
Worked Example: Building 택시를 탈 바에는 차라리 걸어가겠어요
Say "If I have to take a taxi, I'd rather walk." Follow five steps.
- Write the unwanted action. "To take a taxi" is 택시를 타다. The stem is 타.
- Add the modifier. The stem ends in a vowel, so add ㄹ: 탈.
- Add the phrase. Write a space and 바에는: 탈 바에는. The bound noun gets its own space.
- Write the better choice. "I'll walk" is 걸어가겠어요. Add 차라리 ("rather") before it to make the choice clear.
- Join. 택시를 탈 바에는 차라리 걸어가겠어요.
You'll know it worked when the first verb ends in ㄹ, the next word is 바에는 with a space before it, and the polite ending 요 appears only once, at the end. Try the same steps with "If I have to wait, I'd rather go home": 기다리다 gives 기다릴 바에는, and 차라리 집에 가겠어요 follows.

The next section covers tense and sentence types.
Which Tenses and Sentence Types Work with -(으)ㄹ 바에는?
Korean puts the tense marker between the stem and the ending. -(으)ㄹ 바에는 does not take one. The modifier -(으)ㄹ already shows that the action is hypothetical, so you will not see 갔을 바에는 or 하겠을 바에는.
| Slot | Form | Example | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hypothetical action | stem + (으)ㄹ 바에는 | 살 바에는 | if I have to buy |
| Past marker | not used | (no 샀을 바에는) | |
| Short form | stem + (으)ㄹ 바엔 | 할 바엔 | if I'm going to do it |
| Decision after | -겠어요 | 걸어가겠어요. | I'll walk. |
| Judgement after | -는 게 낫다 | 제대로 하는 게 낫겠어요. | Doing it properly is better. |
| Suggestion after | -자, -ㅂ시다 | 맛있는 걸 먹읍시다. | Let's eat something tasty. |
| Command after | -(으)세요 | 지금 시작하세요. | Start now. |
| Question after | -(으)ㄹ까요? / wh-question | 일찍 가는 게 어때요? | How about going early? |
The main clause names the better choice, so all of these endings are natural. The word 차라리 ("rather") is common but not required.
A yes/no question ends with a rise. A wh-question stresses the question word and does not end with a sharp rise: 어차피 갈 바에는 일찍 가는 게 어때요? The phrase 어차피 means "anyway".
The subject of both clauses is usually the same, because the speaker is weighing options that they could take.
The next section compares -(으)ㄹ 바에는 with -느니.
How Is -(으)ㄹ 바에는 Different from -느니 (차라리)?
Both patterns express "rather than X, Y". In many sentences they can replace each other. The difference is a small shift in feeling.
| Pattern | Core idea | Example | Feeling |
|---|---|---|---|
| -(으)ㄹ 바에는 | if X is going to happen, then Y | 기다릴 바에는 차라리 집에 가겠어요. | Conditional, practical. |
| -느니 (차라리) | rather than X, Y | 기다리느니 차라리 집에 가겠어요. | Direct, rejects X. |
| -(으)ㄹ망정 | accept X, but refuse Y | 굶을망정 남의 것은 안 먹겠다. | Literary, solemn. |
The first two sentences mean the same in a plain translation: "Rather than wait, I'd go home." The difference is that 바에는 carries the hint "if waiting is what it takes", while -느니 simply rejects waiting.
The "do it properly" sense belongs only to -(으)ㄹ 바에는. Compare:
- 할 바에는 제대로 하세요. If you are going to do it, do it properly.
- 하느니 제대로 하세요. This does not work, because -느니 rejects the action and cannot express "do it anyway, but well".
-(으)ㄹ 바에는
if I have to X, I'd rather Y
-느니 (차라리)
rather than X, Y
| Comparison | -(으)ㄹ 바에는 | -느니 (차라리) |
|---|---|---|
| Form | verb + (으)ㄹ + space + 바에는 | verb + 느니 |
| Spacing | two words (바 is a bound noun) | one word |
| Extra sense | 'do it properly if you do it at all' | none |
| Fixed phrases | 이럴 바에는, 그럴 바에는 | none |
| Contraction | 바엔 | none |
Use -(으)ㄹ 바에는 for 'if I have to do X (anyway), then Y'; use -느니 (차라리) to reject X outright; both take a verb and lead to the preferred choice.
The next section covers variations and edge cases.
Variations and Edge Cases of -(으)ㄹ 바에는
The Short Form 바엔
In speech, 바에는 often shrinks to 바엔: 할 바엔 제대로 해요. The meaning is the same. Both forms are natural, and 바엔 is more casual.
The Stronger Form 바에야
You will also see -(으)ㄹ 바에야, as in 이왕 할 바에야 끝까지 하자 ("If we are going to do it anyway, let's finish it"). The particle 야 adds emphasis. It is less common than 바에는 and often appears in the "do it properly" sense.
Helper Words
Speakers like to put 어차피 ("anyway"), 기왕 and 이왕 ("since it is so") before the phrase for the "do it properly" sense: 기왕 할 바에는 잘하자. For the "I'd rather" sense, 차라리 follows the phrase.
Making an Adjective Work
The pattern is mainly for actions. Adjectives appear mostly in 이럴 바에는 and 그럴 바에는, or after 이렇게 (이렇게 힘들 바에는, "if it is going to be this hard"). For a learner, the safe route is to turn a state into an action: say 비싸게 살 바에는 ("if I'm going to buy at a high price") rather than a bare 비쌀 바에는.
The next section lists the mistakes that appear most often.
What Mistakes Do Learners Make with -(으)ㄹ 바에는?
Learners make six predictable mistakes. Each has a reason and a fix.
Learners often forget the space. Actually 바 is a bound noun and takes a space. Wrong: 할바에는. Right: 할 바에는. Fix: write the modifier, a space, then 바에는.
Learners often use the past form. Actually the "I'd rather" pattern uses -(으)ㄹ. Wrong: 샀을 바에는. Right: 살 바에는. Fix: the pattern talks about a possible action, not a finished one. (A related phrase with -(으)ㄴ, as in 이왕 시작한 바에는, means "since we have already started"; it is a different use.)
Learners often attach it to a bare adjective. Unusual: 비쌀 바에는 차라리 안 사겠어요. Better: 비싸게 살 바에는 차라리 안 사겠어요. Fix: turn the idea into an action, or use a set phrase such as 이럴 바에는.
Learners often forget the 을. Wrong: 먹ㄹ 바에는 and 먹 바에는. Right: 먹을 바에는. Fix: after a consonant use 을.
Learners often pronounce 바 softly. Actually the ㅂ is tensed after the modifier. Wrong sound: [할바에는]. Right sound: [할빠에는]. Fix: say 바 like ㅃ.
Learners often join the phrase with -느니 in one sentence. Wrong: 기다릴 바에는 느니 차라리 가겠어요. Right: 기다릴 바에는 차라리 가겠어요, or 기다리느니 차라리 가겠어요. Fix: pick one of the two patterns.
The next section gives you practice.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Does -(으)ㄹ 바에는 Mean?
-(으)ㄹ 바에는 means 'if I have to do X, I would rather ...' or 'if I am going to do X anyway, I should do it properly'. 살 바에는 차라리 빌릴래요 means 'If I have to buy it, I would rather rent.' The speaker treats both options as imperfect and picks the less bad one.
How Do You Form -(으)ㄹ 바에는?
Remove 다 from a verb and add ㄹ after a vowel or 을 after a consonant, then write a space and 바에는. 가다 becomes 갈 바에는, 먹다 becomes 먹을 바에는 and 살다 becomes 살 바에는. The ㄹ-stem verbs keep their ㄹ. Irregular verbs follow the future modifier: 돕다 becomes 도울 바에는.
Why Is There a Space before 바에는?
바 is a bound noun, a noun that needs a modifier before it, so Korean spelling separates it from the verb: 할 바에는. Writing 할바에는 is a spelling error. In speech the 바 is tensed and sounds like [빠], so 할 바에는 is said [할빠에는]. The particles 에 and 는 attach to 바 without a space.
What Is the Difference between -(으)ㄹ 바에는 and -느니?
Both express 'rather than X, Y' and are often interchangeable. -(으)ㄹ 바에는 sounds a little more like 'if I have to do X anyway' and fits the 'do it properly' sense: 할 바에는 제대로 하세요. -느니 is shorter and puts all the weight on rejecting the first action: 기다리느니 차라리 가겠어요.
Can I Use 바에는 with Adjectives or the past Tense?
Not normally. The pattern works with action verbs in the form -(으)ㄹ, and the past form 샀을 바에는 is not used. The main exception is the fixed phrase 이럴 바에는 or 그럴 바에는, meaning 'if it is like this' or 'if so'. For a past event, use another structure such as -(으)ㄹ 걸 그랬다.
