What you'll learn
- Apply a one-line rule to choose between -았- and -았었-.
- See both forms side by side on the same verbs.
- Choose by situation: talking about yourself, telling a story, correcting an assumption.
- Know when the two forms are interchangeable in everyday speech.
Before you start: you should know how to form the plain past -았/었- and have seen -았었-. Time: about 25 minutes. This site places the topic at level B1, which is an editorial estimate. The official TOPIK information is published at topik.go.kr.
What Is the Difference in -았- vs -았었-?
Both forms are past, and both are correct Korean. The difference is the speaker's picture of time. -았/었- says "this happened". -았었/었었- says "this happened, and it is finished and separate from now."
The One-Line Rule
Use -았/었- for a past event that links to now, or when you are just reporting what happened. Use -았었/었었- when the state or event has clearly ended, or when you want to stress the contrast with the present.
A quick test helps. Add 지금은 ("but now...") to the sentence in your head. If the sentence naturally goes on with "but now it is different", -았었- is a good fit. If the sentence is still true or you simply do not care, -았- is the safe choice.

Grammar Comparison at a Glance
-았/었-
past: it happened, and it may still matter
-았었/었었-
past and over: it ended, and it is separate from now
| Comparison | -았/었- | -았었/었었- |
|---|---|---|
| Link to now | can continue | cut off |
| Typical time words | 어제, 아까, 방금 | 예전에, 그때, 어릴 때 |
| Feeling in speech | neutral | slightly heavy, often a contrast |
| Safe as the default | yes | no |
Use -았/었- as the everyday past. Use -았었/었었- only when you want to stress that something is over and cut off from now.
How Does -았- vs -았었- Work with a Worked Example?
Take a short conversation. A friend asks about where you live, and you want to answer truthfully.
A: 서울에 살아요? (seoure sarayo?) "Do you live in Seoul?"
B: 아니요, 지금은 부산에 살아요. 서울에는 어릴 때 살았었어요. (aniyo, jigeumeun busane sarayo. seoureneun eoril ttae sarasseosseoyo.) "No, I live in Busan now. I used to live in Seoul when I was young."
Pronunciation: [아니요 지그믄 부사네 사라요 서우레는 어릴 때 사라써써요].
Here is why B chose each form.
- Present first. 부산에 살아요 uses the present, because B lives in Busan now.
- Is the Seoul period over? Yes. B moved away.
- Does B want to stress that it is over? Yes, because A asked about the present and the answer is "no".
- Result. 살았었어요, which carries "that was then".
If B had said 서울에 살았어요 instead, A would still understand, because 지금은 부산에 살아요 already shows the contrast. Korean speakers often rely on context in this way. That is why -았었- is optional.

Choosing in Each Situation
The right form depends on who is speaking, to whom, and what they want to say. The table lists common situations.
| Situation | Better form | Example | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reporting a fact without a contrast | -았/었- | 어제 일했어요. | Nothing needs stressing |
| Describing a past state you left | -았었/었었- | 예전에는 서울에서 일했었어요. | The state ended |
| Answering a "do you?" question with "I used to" | -았었/었었- | 어릴 때 배웠었어요. | The answer is "not now" |
| Talking about a skill you still have | -았/었- | 어릴 때 기타를 배웠어요. | The skill continues |
| Describing a result that holds now | -았/었- | 안경을 썼어요. | The state is still on |
| Describing something you wore or did earlier | -았었/었었- | 안경을 썼었어요. | You do not wear them now |
The difference shows clearly in a short exchange about a skill.
A: 기타 칠 수 있어요? (gita chil su isseoyo?) "Can you play the guitar?"
B1: 네, 어릴 때 배웠어요. (ne, eoril ttae baewosseoyo.) "Yes, I learned it when I was young." Pronunciation: [네 어릴 때 배워써요].
B2: 아니요, 어릴 때 배웠었는데 지금은 못 쳐요. (aniyo, eoril ttae baewosseonneunde jigeumeun mot chyeoyo.) "No, I learned it when I was young, but I can't play now." Pronunciation: [아니요 어릴 때 배워썬는데 지그믄 몯쳐요].
B1 uses -았-, because learning links to being able to play. B2 uses -았었-, because the speaker wants to say "that is over."
Register
The choice is the same in every speech level, because only the last ending changes.
| Style | -았/었- | -았었/었었- |
|---|---|---|
| Polite | 살았어요 | 살았었어요 |
| Formal | 살았습니다 | 살았었습니다 |
| Casual (banmal) | 살았어 | 살았었어 |
| Plain written style | 살았다 | 살았었다 |
In formal speech and writing, the double marker can sound stiff, so some writers prefer to state the time in words: 예전에 서울에 살았습니다. In casual speech with friends, -았었- is common for stories.
What Mistakes Do Learners Make?

- Using -았었- as the default past. 어제 일했었어요 sounds heavy for an ordinary day. Use 어제 일했어요 unless you want to stress that it is over.
- Using -았었- for a result that still holds. 안경을 썼었어요 means "I used to wear glasses". If you are wearing them now, say 안경을 썼어요.
- Using -았었- for something that just happened. 방금 전화했었어요 is odd. Say 방금 전화했어요.
- Missing the marriage trap. 결혼했어요 means "I got married" and is normally heard as "I am married". 결혼했었어요 suggests the marriage has ended. Choose with care.
- Missing the meaning of 알았어요. 알았어요 means "I understand" or "Okay" in conversation, a present meaning. 알았었어요 means "I used to know".
- Thinking -았- is "wrong" for old events. It is not. 서울에 살았어요 can describe a finished past too.
결혼했어요. (gyeolhonhaesseoyo.) Pronunciation: [결혼해써요]. 결혼했었어요. (gyeolhonhaesseosseoyo.) Pronunciation: [결혼해써써요].
Edge Cases and Exceptions
Context carries the cut-off. Korean speakers often use plain -았- for both a finished and an ongoing past, and let the time words or the next sentence show the difference. You will meet many examples such as 예전에 거기 살았는데 지금은 안 살아요, with plain -았-.
Time words that pull toward -았었-. 예전에, 옛날에, 그때, 어릴 때, 학생 때 and 작년에 often appear with -았었-. 어제, 아까, 방금 and 오늘 almost never do.
Experience. With a time word, -았었- can report one past experience: 전에 거기 가 봤었어요. The standard pattern for experience is -(으)ㄴ 적이 있다, which is covered in its own lesson.
A state that still exists but is "old news". If you say 그 이야기는 들었었어요 ("I had heard that story"), you stress that you heard it earlier. The plain 들었어요 means only "I heard it".
A Short Story That Uses Both Forms
In a story, the two forms do different jobs. Plain -았/었- moves the story forward, because the narrator is inside the past. -았었/었었- steps out of the story for a moment and says "that was then, but now it is different."
저는 어릴 때 부산에서 살았어요. 학교 앞에 작은 서점이 있었어요. 방과 후에 친구들과 거기서 만화책을 읽었어요. 그런데 지금은 그 서점이 없어요. 거기에는 예전에 서점이 있었었어요. 지금은 카페예요.
(jeoneun eoril ttae busaneseo sarasseoyo. hakgyo ape jageun seojeomi isseosseoyo. bang-gwa hue chingudeulgwa geogiseo manhwachaegeul ilgeosseoyo. geureonde jigeumeun geu seojeomi eopseoyo. geogieneun yejeone seojeomi isseosseosseoyo. jigeumeun kapeyeyo.)
"When I was a child, I lived in Busan. There was a small bookshop in front of my school. After school, I read comic books there with my friends. But now that bookshop is gone. There used to be a bookshop there. Now it is a café."
Look at the first three sentences. Each describes the past as the narrator lived it, so each uses plain -았/었-. The fifth sentence, 거기에는 예전에 서점이 있었었어요, changes to the viewpoint of the present: the shop was there, and it no longer is. That is the same job the double 었 does everywhere else.
Pronunciation of the key sentence: [거기에는 예저네 서저미 이써써써요]. The last sentence, 지금은 카페예요, is [지그믄 카페예요].
Notice that the story would still be understood if every past verb used plain -았/었-. The doubled form is a choice of emphasis, not a requirement.

Answer Key
- 작년에 결혼했어요. (jangnyeone gyeolhonhaesseoyo.) Pronunciation: [장녀네 결혼해써요]. The marriage still holds, so the plain past is right.
- 방금 전화했어요. (banggeum jeonhwahaesseoyo.) Pronunciation: [방금 전화해써요]. In fast speech the ㅎ of 화 is often weakened. "A moment ago" is not cut off from now.
- 여기에 서점이 있었었어요. (yeogie seojeomi isseosseosseoyo.) Pronunciation: [여기에 서저미 이써써써요]. The double marker says the bookshop is gone.
- Sample answer: 대학생 때 기숙사에서 살았었어요. (daehaksaeng ttae gisuksaeseo sarasseosseoyo.) "I used to live in a dormitory when I was a university student." Pronunciation: [대학쌩 때 기숙싸에서 사라써써요].
If you were unsure, choose -았/었-. It is always grammatical, and context will carry the meaning.
Next Lessons and Where to Go from Here
Study the form itself in past perfect -았었-, and review the base form in past tense -았/었-. For experience, read -(으)ㄴ 적이 있다. Other confusable pairs are collected on the page about Korean grammar differences, and the set overview is Korean aspect.
This page uses Revised Romanization only as a learning aid. The Hangul is the reference. To remember the idea in one line: use -았- when you simply report the past, and add the second 었 only when you want to say "that is over".
Frequently Asked Questions
What Is the Difference between -았- and -았었-?
-았/었- is the ordinary past: the event happened, and it may still matter. -았었/었었- is a past that is over and cut off from now. 서울에 살았어요 means "I lived in Seoul" and may still be true, and 서울에 살았었어요 means "I used to live in Seoul".
Which One Should Beginners Use?
Use -았/었- for nearly all past sentences. It is always grammatical, and context or time words can show that something ended. Add the second 었 only when you want to stress that the state is over, often with a contrast such as -았었는데 ("but now...").
Can I Use -았었- for Something That Just Happened?
No. 방금 전화했었어요 is odd, because "a moment ago" is not cut off from now. Use 방금 전화했어요. Time words such as 어제, 아까 and 방금 almost never appear with -았었-.
Why Does 결혼했었어요 Sound Different from 결혼했어요?
결혼했어요 is normally heard as "I got married" and is still true. 결혼했었어요 stresses that the marriage is over, so listeners may hear it as "I was married". Be careful with this pair, because it changes what you say about your life.
Do Korean Speakers Always Use -았었- When Something Is Over?
No. Plain -았- also describes finished events, and the next sentence or a time word shows the difference. You will often hear 예전에 거기 살았는데 지금은 안 살아요 with plain -았-. -았었- is a stronger signal, not a requirement.
Is There a Quick Test for Choosing?
Add 지금은 ("but now...") to the sentence in your head. If the sentence naturally continues with a contrast, -았었- fits. If the sentence is still true, or you are only reporting what happened, use -았/었-.
