-겠- vs -(으)ㄹ 거예요: Differences, Rules and Examples

-겠- vs -(으)ㄹ 거예요 is the choice between will-as-resolve and will-as-plan. Use -겠- for a decision made now, an offer or a guess from evidence, and -(으)ㄹ 거예요 for a plan made earlier or a neutral prediction, as in 제가 가겠어요 ("I'll go, I volunteer") and 내일 갈 거예요 ("I am going tomorrow").
Start the Lesson
Estimated Time: 30 min Prerequisite: Future Guess -겠-
Paired Korean travel scenes contrast a booked journey with a spontaneous offer to carry a heavy bag.
An earlier plan and an offer made on the spot.

What you'll learn

  • Choose -겠- or -(으)ㄹ 거예요 by asking when the idea was formed.
  • Separate offers, refusals and evidence-based guesses from plans and neutral predictions.
  • Explain the pairs 맛있겠다 and 맛있을 거예요, and 모르겠어요 and 모를 거예요.
  • Apply a three-question rule in a real conversation.

Before you start: study future tense -(으)ㄹ 거예요 and future guess -겠- first. Time: about 30 minutes.

How Do -겠- vs -(으)ㄹ 거예요 Compare at a Glance?

The two forms differ in where the idea comes from. -(으)ㄹ 거예요 reports a plan or a prediction that already exists, and -겠- shows a thought that the speaker forms at the moment of speaking. The table sets the main criteria side by side.

Criterion -(으)ㄹ 거예요 -겠-
When the idea formed before speaking while speaking
Typical subject I, you or he I (will), you (offer), the situation (guess)
Offers not natural natural: 제가 하겠습니다
Guesses from general knowledge from what you see or hear
Negative neutral: 안 갈 거예요 firm: 안 가겠어요
Feeling calm, factual personal, decisive, deferential

Both forms can be correct for one verb, and the meaning changes. Compare the plan 갈 거예요 with the decision 가겠어요 in two short scenes.

A First Example

Listen to each sentence at normal speed, then slowly.

1. 내일 갈 거예요. (naeil gal geoyeyo) "I am going tomorrow (it is planned)."

Pronunciation: [내일 갈꺼예요]. The tickets were booked last week, and the speaker only reports the plan.

2. 제가 가겠어요. (jega gagesseoyo) "I will go (I volunteer)."

Pronunciation: [제가 가게써요]. A colleague asks who can visit the client, and the speaker decides on the spot.

The first speaker reports a decision that was already made, and the second speaker makes a decision while speaking. The next sections test that idea against each criterion.

When Was the Decision Made?

The time of the decision is the strongest test. If the idea existed before the conversation, use -(으)ㄹ 거예요. If the speaker forms it during the conversation, use -겠-.

Situation Sentence Spoken Meaning
Friend asks about the weekend; the trip is booked 부산에 갈 거예요. [부사네 갈꺼예요] I will go to Busan.
Friend struggles with a heavy bag 제가 들겠어요. [제가 들게써요] I'll carry it.
The office phone rings; you reach it first 제가 받겠습니다. [제가 받껟씀니다] I'll answer it.
Friend asks about next month 다음 달에 이사할 거예요. [다음 따레 이사할꺼예요] I will move next month.

Romanization: busane gal geoyeyo, jega deulgesseoyo, jega batgetseumnida and daeum dare isahal geoyeyo. In each -겠- row, nobody asked about a plan. A need appeared, and the speaker answered it. In each -(으)ㄹ 거예요 row, the question asks for something that is already known.

A quick check works for both: if you could add "as I already decided" without sounding odd, use -(으)ㄹ 거예요. If you could add "right then", use -겠-. The next section adds the subject as a second test.

Subject: I, You or He

With "I", both forms are possible. With "you", both appear in questions but with different tones. With "he" or "she", -(으)ㄹ 거예요 is the normal choice for a plan.

Subject -(으)ㄹ 거예요 -겠-
I 저는 내일 갈 거예요. (a plan) 제가 가겠어요. (a decision or offer)
You 뭐 드실 거예요? (What are you going to have?) 뭐 드시겠어요? (What would you like?)
He or she 민수 씨는 내일 올 거예요. (He will come tomorrow.) 민수 씨는 힘들겠어요. (He must be having a hard time.)

Pronunciation: 뭐 드실 거예요 is [뭐 드실꺼예요] (mwo deusil geoyeyo), 뭐 드시겠어요 is [뭐 드시게써요] (mwo deusigesseoyo), 민수 씨는 내일 올 거예요 is [민수 씨는 내일 올꺼예요] (minsu ssineun naeil ol geoyeyo), and 민수 씨는 힘들겠어요 is [민수 씨는 힘들게써요] (minsu ssineun himdeulgesseoyo). Notice that the -겠- row for "he or she" is an inference about a state, not a plan. A third-person plan with -겠-, such as 민수 씨는 내일 오겠어요, would read as a guess that he looks likely to come. The next criterion covers offers.

Offers and Polite Questions

-겠- is the usual form for an offer, a promise made in service, and a polite question about the listener's wish. -(으)ㄹ 거예요 would state a plan instead.

Context With -겠- With -(으)ㄹ 거예요
Offer at work 제가 도와드리겠습니다. (I'll help you.) 제가 도와드릴 거예요. (I am going to help you.)
Server asks the guest 뭐 드시겠어요? (What would you like?) 뭐 드실 거예요? (What are you going to have?)
Service promise 확인해 보겠습니다. (I'll check.) 확인해 볼 거예요. (I plan to check.)
Casual promise 제가 할게요. (I'll do it.) 제가 할 거예요. (I will do it.)

Pronunciation: 제가 도와드리겠습니다 is [제가 도와드리겓씀니다], 제가 도와드릴 거예요 is [제가 도와드릴꺼예요], 확인해 보겠습니다 is [화긴해 보겓씀니다], 확인해 볼 거예요 is [화긴해 볼꺼예요], and 제가 할게요 is [제가 할께요]. Romanization: jega dowadeurigetseumnida, jega dowadeuril geoyeyo, hwaginhae bogetseumnida, hwaginhae bol geoyeyo and jega halgeyo.

In casual speech between friends, -(으)ㄹ게요 takes over the offer job. The -(으)ㄹ 거예요 versions are grammatical, but they sound like a report of an intention, not an offer. The next criterion covers guesses.

Is There Evidence for the Guess?

Use -겠- when the speaker can see, hear or taste the reason for the guess, and -(으)ㄹ 거예요 when the guess comes from general knowledge. The test is whether the evidence is in front of you.

Evidence With -겠- With -(으)ㄹ 거예요
Dark clouds in view 먹구름이 많아요. 비가 오겠어요. 내일은 비가 올 거예요. (a forecast)
A dish on the table 맛있겠다. (It looks delicious.) 맛있을 거예요. (It is probably tasty, from its reputation.)
A tired friend in front of you 피곤하겠어요. (You must be tired.) 피곤할 거예요. (He is probably tired.)

Pronunciation: 먹구름이 많아요 is [먹꾸르미 마나요] (meokgureumi manayo), 비가 오겠어요 is [비가 오게써요] (biga ogesseoyo), 내일은 비가 올 거예요 is [내이른 비가 올꺼예요] (naeireun biga ol geoyeyo), 맛있겠다 is [마싣껟따] (masitgetda), 맛있을 거예요 is [마시쓸꺼예요] (masisseul geoyeyo), 피곤하겠어요 is [피곤하게써요] (pigonhagesseoyo), and 피곤할 거예요 is [피곤할꺼예요] (pigonhal geoyeyo).

The practical rule: if you are looking at the dish, say 맛있겠다. If you have not seen it, say 맛있을 거예요. The next criterion covers the negative forms.

Negatives and Refusals

A negative with -겠- is personal and firm, and a negative with -(으)ㄹ 거예요 is neutral. The pair 모르겠어요 and 모를 거예요 is the clearest case.

Sentence Spoken Meaning
안 갈 거예요. [안 갈꺼예요] I am not going. (a plan)
안 가겠어요. [안 가게써요] I won't go. (a refusal)
못 가겠어요. [몯 가게써요] I don't think I can go. (a conclusion)
모르겠어요. [모르게써요] I don't know. / I can't tell.
그 사람은 모를 거예요. [그 사라믄 모를꺼예요] He probably doesn't know.

Romanization: an gal geoyeyo, an gagesseoyo, mot gagesseoyo, moreugesseoyo and geu sarameun moreul geoyeyo. Revised Romanization does not show tensing caused by a neighbouring sound, so the written forms hide it. Listen to the audio and copy what you hear. The next section turns the criteria into verdicts for different speakers.

Which Form Fits Which Speaker?

Each type of speaker leans toward one form because their situation fixes where the idea comes from. The verdicts below apply the criteria.

Speaker Typical sentence Best form Reason
Traveler describing a booked trip 내일 제주도에 갈 거예요. -(으)ㄹ 거예요 plan made earlier
Office worker taking a task 제가 하겠습니다. -겠- decision and responsibility now
Server at a restaurant 뭐 드시겠어요? -겠- polite question about a wish
Person talking about tomorrow's weather 내일은 비가 올 거예요. -(으)ㄹ 거예요 general prediction
Person looking at dark clouds 비가 오겠어요. -겠- evidence in view

Pronunciation of the new sentences: 내일 제주도에 갈 거예요 is [내일 제주도에 갈꺼예요] (naeil jejudoe gal geoyeyo). One more verdict is worth keeping: in a presentation, 이제 시작하겠습니다 [이제 시자카겓씀니다] ("We will start now") uses -겠- because the speaker acts at once. The next section turns the criteria into a rule.

A Three-Question Rule for Real Conversations

To choose, ask three questions in order. Each one takes a second, and the first "yes" decides the form. Follow them with the sentence "Someone asks who will answer the phone".

  1. Did the idea exist before you spoke? If yes, use -(으)ㄹ 거예요. For a phone already assigned to you, say 제가 받을 거예요 ("I am the one answering").
  2. Are you deciding, offering or promising right now? If yes, use -겠-. For a phone that rings while you are free, say 제가 받겠습니다.
  3. Is the sentence a guess? If you can see, hear or taste the reason, use -겠-. If the guess comes from general knowledge, use -(으)ㄹ 거예요.

You'll know it worked when you can say why the other form would change the meaning. Common mistake at this step: asking "which is more polite?" first. Politeness comes from the final ending, so decide the meaning before the style.

What Mistakes Do Learners Make?

Six mistakes cover most wrong choices between the two forms.

  1. Answering a plan question with -겠-. To "What will you do tomorrow?", 부산에 가겠어요 sounds like a sudden decision. Say 부산에 갈 거예요.
  2. Volunteering with -(으)ㄹ 거예요. To "Who will carry this?", 제가 들 거예요 sounds like a statement of intention. Say 제가 들겠어요.
  3. Using -겠- for another person's plan. 민수 씨는 내일 오겠어요 reads as a guess. For a plan, say 오실 거예요 or 올 거예요.
  4. Mixing up the two guesses. 맛있을 거예요 is a guess from reputation, and 맛있겠다 is a reaction to what you see. They are not interchangeable.
  5. Mixing up 모르겠어요 and 모를 거예요. The first is "I don't know", and the second is "he probably doesn't know".
  6. Stacking both forms. 갈 거겠어요 is wrong. Choose one.

Limitation: this lesson compares two future forms. It does not cover -(으)ㄹ 것 같다 for guesses, which is taught in Guessing and Conjecture, or the full set of contrast pages in Confusing Grammar Compared. Now test yourself.

Practice and Answers

Try all four items before you read the answers. Each answer has audio, normal and slow.

Read the examples and check your answer.

  1. A friend asks about your weekend. You booked a trip to Jeju last week. Which answer fits?

    1. 제주도에 가겠어요.
    2. 제주도에 갈 거예요.
    3. 제주도에 갔어요.
    Show answer

    제주도에 갈 거예요.

The plan existed before you spoke, so -(으)ㄹ 거예요 fits. 가겠어요 sounds like a sudden decision.

  2. A friend is struggling with a heavy bag. How do you offer to carry it?

    1. 제가 들 거예요.
    2. 제가 들었어요.
    3. 제가 들겠어요.
    Show answer

    제가 들겠어요.

You decide on the spot with the problem in view, so -겠- is right. 제가 들 거예요 sounds like a report of an intention, not an offer.

  3. You are looking at a dish on the table. Which sentence fits?

    1. 맛있겠다.
    2. 맛있었어요.
    3. 맛있을 거예요.
    Show answer

    맛있겠다.

A guess from what you can see takes -겠-. 맛있을 거예요 is a guess from reputation, when you have not seen the dish.

  4. What does 그 사람은 모를 거예요 mean?

    1. He probably doesn't know.
    2. I don't know.
    3. He refuses to know.
    Show answer

    He probably doesn't know.

-(으)ㄹ 거예요 gives a neutral guess about someone else. "I don't know" is 모르겠어요.

  5. Which sentence is a firm refusal, "I won't go"?

    1. 안 가겠어요.
    2. 못 가겠어요.
    3. 안 갔어요.
    Show answer

    안 가겠어요.

A negative with -겠- is personal and firm. 안 갈 거예요 states a plan neutrally, and 못 가겠어요 means "I don't think I can go".

  6. What is the strongest test for choosing between -겠- and -(으)ㄹ 거예요?

    1. Which of the two sounds more polite
    2. Whether the verb is regular or irregular
    3. When the idea formed: before speaking or while speaking
    Show answer

When the idea formed: before speaking or while speaking

An idea that existed before the conversation takes -(으)ㄹ 거예요; one formed while speaking takes -겠-. Politeness comes from the final ending.

  7. How does 민수 씨는 내일 오겠어요 read?

    1. As his fixed plan to come tomorrow
    2. As a promise he made to you
    3. As a guess that he looks likely to come
    Show answer

As a guess that he looks likely to come

With a third-person subject, -겠- reads as the speaker's inference. For his plan, say 올 거예요 or 오실 거예요.

  8. The office phone rings while you are free, and you decide to answer it. What do you say?

    1. 제가 받았어요.
    2. 제가 받겠습니다.
    3. 제가 받을 거예요.
    Show answer

    제가 받겠습니다.

You decide in the moment, so -겠- fits. 제가 받을 거예요 is for a phone already assigned to you.

  1. Choose the form. A friend asks about your weekend, and you have booked a trip to Jeju: 제주도에 갈 거예요 or 제주도에 가겠어요?
  2. Fix the error. A: 주말에 뭐 해요? B: 부산에 가겠어요. (The plan was made last week.)
  3. Translate. "I'll carry it." (an offer to a friend with a heavy bag)
  4. Write your own. Write two sentences about tomorrow: one plan with -(으)ㄹ 거예요 and one guess from evidence with -겠-.

Answer Key

  1. 제주도에 갈 거예요 (jejudoe gal geoyeyo) Pronounced [제주도에 갈꺼예요]. The trip is booked, so the plan form is right.
  1. 부산에 갈 거예요. (busane gal geoyeyo) Pronounced [부사네 갈꺼예요]. The question asks about a known plan, so -(으)ㄹ 거예요 is natural.
  1. 제가 들겠어요. (jega deulgesseoyo) Pronounced [제가 들게써요]. The speaker decides while the problem is in view, so -겠- is right.
  1. Sample answer: 내일 친구를 만날 거예요. 하늘이 흐려요. 비가 오겠어요. (naeil chingureul mannal geoyeyo. haneuri heuryeoyo. biga ogesseoyo.) "I will meet a friend tomorrow. The sky is cloudy. It looks like it will rain." Pronounced [내일 친구를 만날꺼예요. 하느리 흐려요. 비가 오게써요]. The first sentence is a plan, and the second guess rests on what the speaker sees.

If you chose the wrong form, ask the three questions again: was the idea formed before speaking, is it an offer or decision now, and can you see the evidence? Then continue with the next lessons.

Next Lessons and Where to Go from Here

After -겠- vs -(으)ㄹ 거예요, the natural next step is practice with the Korean verb conjugator, which shows both forms for any verb. To review either form alone, read future tense -(으)ㄹ 거예요 or future guess -겠-. The set overview, Korean future tense, lists every lesson in order.

This page uses Revised Romanization only as a learning aid; the Hangul is the reference. To remember the idea in one line: -겠- vs -(으)ㄹ 거예요 is decided by when the idea was formed, with -겠- for now and -(으)ㄹ 거예요 for earlier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Is More Natural, -겠- or -(으)ㄹ 거예요?

Neither is more natural in general. -(으)ㄹ 거예요 is the neutral choice for plans and predictions, so beginners hear it more in daily talk. -겠- is natural when you decide, volunteer or conclude something on the spot, and in service phrases such as 알겠습니다. Pick the form that matches how the idea arose.

Can I Always Replace -겠- with -(으)ㄹ 거예요?

No. In offers and set phrases the swap changes the meaning or sounds wrong. 제가 하겠습니다 volunteers, while 제가 할 거예요 only states an intention. 알겠습니다 and 처음 뵙겠습니다 cannot be replaced at all. Swapping is safe mainly for plain future statements, where both forms may be understood.

What Is the Difference between 모르겠어요 and 모를 거예요?

모르겠어요 is a set expression that means "I don't know" or "I can't tell", said by the speaker about the speaker. 모를 거예요 is a prediction about someone else, as in 그 사람은 모를 거예요 ("He probably doesn't know"). The first reports your own knowledge now, and the second guesses about a third person.

Which Form Is More Polite?

Neither form has a built-in politeness level, because politeness comes from the last ending. -겠- appears in many respectful phrases, such as 알겠습니다 and 드시겠어요, so it can sound more deferential. For the same level, compare 갈 겁니다 and 가겠습니다 in formal speech, and 갈 거예요 and 가겠어요 in polite speech.

Which Form Do I Use to Answer "What Will You Do Tomorrow?"

Use -(으)ㄹ 거예요, as in 내일 친구를 만날 거예요. The question asks about plans, and plans are the main job of that ending. Answering with -겠- makes the reply sound like a sudden decision or a vow. Keep -겠- for moments when you decide while speaking.
