Korean ㄷ ㅌ Palatalization: Sounds, Rules and Examples

Korean ㄷ ㅌ palatalization: how ㄷ and ㅌ become ㅈ and ㅊ before 이 in 굳이, 같이, 끝이 and 붙이다. Get ten common ㄷ/ㅌ + 이 cases right, with audio and practice.
Start the Lesson
Two adult learners practice Korean pronunciation together in a Seoul study room.

Korean ㄷ ㅌ palatalization is the change in which a final ㄷ becomes ㅈ and a final ㅌ becomes ㅊ before the suffix or particle 이. It is why 굳이 is spoken [구지], 같이 is [가치] and 끝이 is [끄치]. Ten common words follow the rule, and several look similar but do not.

What you'll learn

  • Say 굳이, 같이, 끝이, 붙이다 and 곧이듣다 with the correct palatalized sound.
  • Name the four kinds of 이 that trigger the change.
  • Separate palatalization from plain liaison in 옷이, 낮이 and 꽃이.
  • Keep the ㄷ in root syllables such as 마디 and 잔디.

Prerequisite: Korean Palatalization Examples, which introduces the two-question test used here. Estimated time: 25 minutes.

What Is Korean ㄷ ㅌ Palatalization?

Korean ㄷ ㅌ palatalization is the special case of palatalization that involves the two tooth-ridge stops. Both are spoken with the tongue tip on the ridge behind the upper teeth, and both have a palatal partner made slightly farther back: ㄷ pairs with ㅈ, and ㅌ pairs with ㅊ.

The pairing keeps the strength of the consonant. A plain consonant stays plain and an aspirated one stays aspirated.

Final consonant Strength Becomes Strength Example
ㄷ plain ㅈ plain 굳이 → [구지]
ㅌ aspirated (breathy) ㅊ aspirated (breathy) 같이 → [가치]

That detail explains why ㅌ words end in a puffed [치] and ㄷ words end in a softer [지]. A learner who says [구치] for 굳이 has changed the strength by mistake. The change happens in two steps, as the overview lesson showed: liaison moves the consonant onto the vowel, and then ㄷ or ㅌ before 이 becomes ㅈ or ㅊ.

Rule

final ㄷ + 이 → [지]; final ㅌ + 이 → [치]

The pairs are simple, but the trigger needs care, because not every 이 counts.

Which Suffixes Trigger Korean ㄷ ㅌ Palatalization?

Four kinds of 이 trigger the rule: one particle and three suffixes. All four are separate grammatical pieces added to a stem, which is why the boundary exists.

Kind of 이 Korean grammar term What it does Examples
Subject particle 주격 조사 marks the subject of a sentence 밭이 [바치], 끝이 [끄치], 팥이 [파치]
Adverb suffix 부사 파생 접미사 turns a stem into an adverb 같이 [가치], 굳이 [구지], 곧이듣다 [고지듣따]
Noun suffix 명사 파생 접미사 turns a stem into a noun 해돋이 [해도지], 맏이 [마지], 미닫이 [미다지]
Verb suffix 사동 접미사 (causative suffix) builds a verb that takes an object 붙이다 [부치다]

A short example of each helps. In 밭이 넓어요 (the field is wide), 이 marks 밭 as the subject. In 같이 가요 (let's go together), 이 turns 같 into an adverb. In 해돋이 (sunrise, literally "sun rising"), 이 turns 해 돋- (the sun rises, from 돋다, to rise) into a noun. In 붙이다 (to stick on), 이 turns 붙 (to stick, to be attached) into a verb that takes an object.

The suffix 히 behaves in a similar way after ㄷ, giving [치] in 닫히다 [다치다]. That case involves a second rule, aspiration, so it has its own lesson: Korean ㄷ ㅎ Palatalization. With the triggers listed, the next question is what the result sounds like.

What Does ㅌ + 이 Sound Like?

ㅌ + 이 sounds like the English "chi" in "cheese", with a light puff of air and a flat tongue. The result is the syllable 치. It is different from 티, the syllable learners expect from the spelling.

Syllable Where the tongue touches What you hear English guide
티 the tip, on the ridge behind the teeth a sharp t with a puff "tea"
치 the flat blade, nearer the hard palate a t that slides into a hiss "cheese"
지 the flat blade, nearer the hard palate a softer j, no puff "jeep", lightly
디 the tip, on the ridge a soft d "dee"

Say 티 and then 치 slowly. Your tongue should move from the tip position to a flatter, farther-back position, and a faint hiss should appear. A good test is to whisper 같이: if you hear "gat-ee", the tongue is still on the tip. If you hear "ga-chee", the change has happened. Korean ㅊ is lighter than the English "ch" in "church", with less lip rounding, so keep the lips relaxed and spread. Knowing the sound, you can now meet the words that use it.

Ten Common ㄷ and ㅌ + 이 Words

The ten words below are the ones a beginner is most likely to meet. Learn the six ㅌ words and the four ㄷ words as two small groups.

Written Spoken Meaning Final Type of 이
같이 [가치] together ㅌ adverb suffix
끝이 [끄치] the end (subject) ㅌ subject particle
밭이 [바치] the field (subject) ㅌ subject particle
팥이 [파치] red beans (subject) ㅌ subject particle
밑이 [미치] the bottom (subject) ㅌ subject particle
붙이다 [부치다] to stick, to attach ㅌ verb suffix
굳이 [구지] insistently ㄷ adverb suffix
해돋이 [해도지] sunrise ㄷ noun suffix
맏이 [마지] eldest child ㄷ noun suffix
미닫이 [미다지] sliding door ㄷ noun suffix

Two words deserve a note. 곧이듣다 (to take something at face value; 곧이 is an adverb meaning "as it is") is spoken [고지듣따], where the ㄷ of 다 also becomes tense [ㄸ] after the final ㄷ of 듣, a separate rule (tensification). And 밑이 is rarer than its sibling 밑에 (under), spoken [미테], which learners meet first. The particle 에 does not trigger the rule, so the two forms of 밑 sound different. Having the changing words, you also need the words that look like them.

Which Words Stay the Same?

Words stay the same when the 이 is part of the root, when the vowel is not 이, or when the final consonant is not ㄷ or ㅌ. The last case is the one that surprises learners most, so it comes first.

Written Spoken Why nothing changes
옷이 [오시] final ㅅ: liaison only
낮이 [나지] final ㅈ is already ㅈ: liaison only
꽃이 [꼬치] final ㅊ is already ㅊ: liaison only
마디 [마디] 디 is part of the root
잔디 [잔디] 디 is part of the root
밭에 [바테] 에 is not 이

The row for 꽃이 is a useful trap. Its spoken form [꼬치] sounds just like a palatalized word, but nothing was palatalized: ㅊ moved to the next syllable and was already ㅊ. This matters in two ways. Your ear cannot tell the two processes apart, so only the written final tells you which rule you heard. And the same sound can come from ㅌ in 밭이 [바치] and ㅊ in 꽃이 [꼬치].

A final check for roots: if a word cannot be split into a stem plus 이, as with 마디, assume the 디 belongs to the root and leave it alone. With the exceptions clear, the liaison comparison below separates the two rules for good.

How Is Palatalization Different from Liaison?

Palatalization differs from liaison in one respect: liaison only moves the consonant, while palatalization also changes it. Every palatalized word passes through liaison first, but most liaison words never reach the second step.

Written Step 1: liaison Step 2: change Spoken Rule used
옷이 오 + 시 none [오시] liaison only
꽃이 꼬 + 치 none [꼬치] liaison only
밭이 바 + 티 티 → 치 [바치] liaison + palatalization
굳이 구 + 디 디 → 지 [구지] liaison + palatalization
밭에 바 + 테 none [바테] liaison only

The practical advice is to run liaison first on every word, then ask one question: did I land on 디 or 티 before a suffix 이? If yes, change it. If not, stop. The full liaison rule is in Korean liaison. A worked example now follows the whole route.

Worked Example: Reading 굳이

Follow these steps to read 굳이 (insistently), a ㄷ word.

  1. Find the final consonant. The first block, 굳, ends in ㄷ.
  2. Check what follows. The next block is 이, a vowel, so the final consonant moves.
  3. Test the 이. Remove it and 굳 remains, an adjective stem (굳다, to be hard or firm). So 이 is an adverb suffix, and the rule applies.
  4. Apply liaison. ㄷ moves to the silent ㅇ of 이, giving 구 + 디.
  5. Palatalize. 디 becomes 지, giving 구 + 지.
  6. Say it. [구지], with a soft, unaspirated j: no puff of air.

You will know you have it when 굳이 ends with the same syllable as 바지 (trousers), and when your hand held in front of your mouth feels almost no puff on 지. If you feel a strong puff, you have made 치, which is the ㅌ sound. Even with the steps, some points stay open, so the edge cases come next.

Edge Cases: Dialects, Speed and Spelling

Three situations are worth knowing about.

Standard speech versus regional speech. In Standard Korean, palatalization before a suffix 이 is required. Some regional varieties of Korean keep ㄷ and ㅌ before 이, so a learner may occasionally hear [가티] or [바티]. This site teaches the standard pronunciation, and an unusual local form should be treated as a regional feature, not as a rule.

Fast speech. Palatalization does not weaken in fast speech. The change is part of the standard form, not a casual shortcut. A speaker who says 같이 as [가치] in careful speech says it the same way in a quick chat.

Spelling. Because the written form keeps the stem, you cannot hear the spelling. A learner who writes 가치 for 같이 has written a different word (value). Use a dictionary when you are unsure: for example the 표준국어대사전 (Standard Korean Language Dictionary) marks the spoken form in brackets. These edge cases lead to the five most common mistakes.

Common Mistakes with Korean ㄷ ㅌ Palatalization

Mistake 1: saying 티 for 치. Learners often assume 같이 is [가티]; actually it is [가치]. Fix: whisper the word and listen for the hiss.

Mistake 2: swapping the strength. Learners sometimes say 굳이 as [구치]; actually plain ㄷ becomes plain ㅈ, so the word is [구지]. Fix: feel for a puff of air; there should be none on 지.

Mistake 3: palatalizing every 디. Learners who have just met the rule say 마디 as [마지]; actually the 디 belongs to the root. Fix: look for a stem you can say without the 이.

Mistake 4: palatalizing ㅅ and ㅊ finals. Learners often say 옷이 as [오치]; actually the word is [오시], by liaison only. Fix: restrict the change to ㄷ and ㅌ.

Mistake 5: using the rule for 에 and 을. Learners often say 밭에 as [바체]; actually only 이 triggers the change, so it is [바테]. Fix: check that the next vowel is the letter ㅣ.

Each error comes from applying the rule by letter shape instead of by boundary. The practice set below rehearses all five.

Practice: Ten ㄷ and ㅌ + 이 Words

Exercise 1. Write the spoken form.

  1. 굳이
  2. 같이
  3. 끝이
  4. 붙이다
  5. 해돋이
  6. 팥이

Exercise 2. Does the word palatalize? Answer yes or no, then give the spoken form.

  1. 낮이
  2. 마디
  3. 밑에
  4. 맏이
  5. 잔디

Exercise 3. Which sounds the same as the spoken form of 꽃이: 밭이, 옷이 or 낮이?

Answers.

Exercise 1: 1 [구지], 2 [가치], 3 [끄치], 4 [부치다], 5 [해도지], 6 [파치].

Exercise 2: 1 no, [나지]: final ㅈ. 2 no, [마디]: root. 3 no, [미테]: the particle is 에. 4 yes, [마지]. 5 no, [잔디]: root.

Exercise 3: 밭이. Both 꽃이 and 밭이 are spoken [~치], but 꽃이 by liaison and 밭이 by palatalization.

If you missed more than two answers in Exercise 1, say the six words aloud once more with a hand in front of your mouth to check the puff. Then move on to the next lesson.

Where to Go Next

The next lesson, Korean ㄷ ㅎ Palatalization, covers the suffix 히 after ㄷ and shows how aspiration and palatalization work in sequence in 닫히다 [다치다]. The overview is in Korean Palatalization Examples, and the final consonant itself is explained in the ㄷ batchim lesson. The whole group is listed on the Korean palatalization page.

This lesson does not cover regional pronunciations in depth, loanword spelling or the 히 cases. Those belong to later lessons or to a dictionary.

In short, Korean ㄷ ㅌ palatalization turns plain ㄷ into ㅈ and aspirated ㅌ into ㅊ before a suffix or particle 이, and it leaves ㅅ, ㅈ and ㅊ finals and root syllables alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 끝이 pronounced 끄치? Yes. 끝 (end) ends in ㅌ, and 이 is the subject particle. The ㅌ moves onto 이 by liaison and, standing before 이, becomes ㅊ, so 끝이 is [끄치]. The same happens in 팥이 [파치] and 밑이 [미치]. Revised Romanization writes the spoken form: kkeuchi.

Why is 마디 not pronounced 마지? In 마디 (a joint or knot), the syllable 디 is part of the root, so no suffix or particle sits between the ㄷ and the 이. Palatalization works only across a boundary between a stem and a suffix or particle. Inside a root, ㄷ stays [ㄷ], and 마디 is [마디].

How is palatalization different from liaison? Liaison moves a final consonant onto the next vowel without changing it, as in 옷이 [오시]. Palatalization adds a second change: after liaison, ㄷ or ㅌ stands before 이 and becomes ㅈ or ㅊ, as in 밭이 [바치]. Every palatalized word passes through liaison first, but most liaison words are not palatalized.

Why is 같이 not spelled 가치? Korean spelling shows the stem, not the sound. The stem of 같다 is 같, and the suffix is 이, so the written form is 같이 even though the mouth says [가치]. Writing 가치 would hide the stem and would also be a different word, 가치, meaning value.
