Key Facts
- Hangul: 월; Revised Romanization: wol
- Part of speech: noun (counter)
- Origin: Sino-Korean, hanja 月 (月 moon, month)
- Register: Neutral, standard counter; used with Sino-Korean numbers for calendar months.
Month in Korean: What Does 월 Mean?
월 has two senses: the calendar month, and "moon" inside compounds. As a counter it follows Sino-Korean numbers, so 5월 is May. Its register is neutral and standard. It names which month, not how many months.
How Do You Pronounce 월?
One syllable, wol. The vowel glides from "wo" and ends in a light l, with the tongue tip touching the ridge behind the teeth. Before a vowel that l links forward as r, so 5월에 is said o-wo-re.
Example Sentences with 월
오늘은 몇 월 며칠이에요?
Oneureun myeot wol myeochirieyo
What month and day is it today?
Asks for today's date. 몇 월 means which month and 며칠 means which day of the month.
시험은 5월에 있어요.
Siheomeun owore isseoyo
The exam is in May.
Puts an event in May: 5월에 uses the particle 에 to mark the time.
1월부터 12월까지 일해요.
Irwolbuteo sibiwolkkaji ilhaeyo
I work from January to December.
부터 and 까지 mean "from" and "until", so the two month names mark a range.
Common Phrases and Collocations
몇 월 asks which month, 매월 means every month, 월말 is the end of the month and 월초 the start. Both 월말 and 월초 are written as single words.
| Korean | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 몇 월 | what month |
| 매월 | every month |
| 월말 | end of the month |
| 월초 | start of the month |
The Mistake to Avoid
Wrong: ✗ 3월 for "three months"
Correct: ✓ 3개월 or ✓ 세 달
Why: 월 names a month on the calendar, so 3월 can only mean March. To count a length of time, use 개월 with Sino-Korean numbers or 달 with native numbers.
월 Compared with Similar Words
Three words around the idea of month are easy to blur.
| Word | Meaning | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| 달 | month, moon | 달 is the native word, used for counting months: 한 달 is one month. |
| 개월 | months (duration) | 개월 counts a length of time: 3개월 is three months. |
| 요일 | day of the week | In 월요일 (Monday), 월 means moon, not month. |
Where Does the Word Come From?
月 is the hanja, meaning moon and month. That explains why 월 means "moon" in compounds and why the native word 달 also does double duty.
Choosing a Month for a Trip
Two friends are choosing when to travel. They separate the calendar month from how long they will stay.
Yuna
여행은 몇 월에 가요?
Yeohaengeun myeot wore gayo?
What month are we going on the trip?
Jae
5월에 가요.
Owore gayo.
We’re going in May.
Yuna
한 달 동안 있어요?
Han dal dongan isseoyo?
Are we staying for a month?
Jae
아니요, 일주일만 있어요.
Aniyo, iljuilman isseoyo.
No, we’re staying for just a week.
5월에 places the trip in May. 한 달 동안 asks about its duration. These are separate questions: a trip in May does not have to last a month. 만 in the last answer limits the stay to one week.
Which Month Names Need Extra Care?
Most month names combine a Sino-Korean number with 월. June and October have shortened forms: 6월 is 유월 (yuwol), and 10월 is 시월 (siwol). Learn these as whole month names rather than trying to pronounce every numeral separately. The written digits still identify the sixth and tenth months.
January is 1월, read 일월 (irwol). The final ㄹ of 일 links with 월, which is why the romanization begins irw-. May is 5월, read 오월 (owol). Adding the time particle 에 gives 오월에 (owore), “in May”. Spelling and connected pronunciation describe the same date.
How Does 월 Work on Forms and Notices?
A date form may label its boxes 년, 월 and 일: year, month and day. Put the month number in the 월 box. On a calendar heading, 5월 identifies the whole month of May, while a date such as 5월 3일 identifies a particular day within it.
몇 월 asks which month, but 몇 개월 asks how many months. That extra 개 changes the task from identifying a calendar position to counting a duration. A school can start in 3월 and offer a 3개월 course; the first means March and the second means three months long.
매월 means “every month” and often appears with recurring payments or events. 월말 means the end of a month; 월초 means its beginning. Neither expression specifies one exact day. If an appointment needs a firm date, ask for the day as well rather than treating 월말 as the last calendar date automatically.
Calendar Words to Learn Next
| Korean | Meaning | When you need it |
|---|---|---|
| 년 | year | The year unit in a written date. |
| 일 | day of the month | The unit after the date’s day number. |
| 이번 달 | this month | Refers to the current calendar month. |
| 다음 달 | next month | Refers to the following calendar month. |
| 지난달 | last month | Written as one word. |
The months lesson teaches the full twelve-month sequence. Notice that 달 is natural in 이번 달 and 다음 달 even though 월 names numbered months. The choice depends on the expression, so “달 is always duration” would be too broad a rule.
