-고 나서 vs -(으)ㄴ 후에: What Is the Difference?

The difference between -고 나서 and -(으)ㄴ 후에 is small, and in most sentences you can swap them. Both mean "after doing something." -고 나서 stresses that the first action is finished before the second one starts. -(으)ㄴ 후에 simply places one event after another, and it also works with nouns and time spans.

-고 나서 vs -(으)ㄴ 후에

Key facts

  • -고 나서 means "after finishing X, then Y." It attaches to verbs only: 먹고 나서.
  • -(으)ㄴ 후에 means "after X." It attaches to verbs (먹은 후에), and 후에 also follows nouns and time spans (수업 후에, 삼 일 후에).
  • The two are interchangeable in most verb sentences: 숙제를 하고 나서 놀아요 and 숙제를 한 후에 놀아요 mean almost the same.
  • 뒤에 is a more casual match for 후에.

What you'll learn

  • Choose -고 나서 or -(으)ㄴ 후에 for five test sentences and state the deciding rule in one sentence.
  • Build both forms from verbs, including ㄹ and ㄷ irregular verbs.
  • Use 후에 with nouns and time spans, where -고 나서 does not fit.
  • Avoid the most common ending mistakes, such as adding a tense marker to the first clause.

Before you start: you should know how to form a verb stem and the polite ending -아요/-어요. If you want the full rules for each pattern first, read -고 나서 and -(으)ㄴ 후에.

What Is the Difference between -고 나서 and -(으)ㄴ 후에?

The difference is emphasis and reach. -고 나서 says "after I finish X," so the first action is a completed block. -(으)ㄴ 후에 says "after X" and just fixes the order in time. Because most finished actions also come first in time, the two usually mean the same.

Two sentences built on the same verb show the contrast:

  • 숙제를 하고 나서 놀아요. (sukjereul hago naseo norayo.) = "I play after finishing my homework." The finish is in focus.
  • 숙제를 한 후에 놀아요. (sukjereul han hue norayo.) = "I play after doing my homework." The order is in focus.

Both sentences are polite, and both are correct for the same situation. The real differences appear with nouns, time spans and different subjects, and the table below lists them.

-고 나서 vs -(으)ㄴ 후에: Side-by-Side Table

The table lists the points learners need most. Each row gives one answer for each pattern.

Point -고 나서 -(으)ㄴ 후에
Core meaning after finishing X after X
What it stresses completion order in time
Attaches to verbs only verbs, nouns and time spans
Verb form stem + 고 나서 (never changes) stem + (으)ㄴ (changes with the stem)
Subject of the two clauses usually the same person can be different
Time spans (three days, a year) no yes: 삼 일 후에
Tense in the first clause none none
Tone neutral slightly more formal; 뒤에 is more casual
Example 밥을 먹고 나서 약을 먹어요. 수업 후에 친구를 만나요.

-고 나서

after finishing X: completion, verbs only

-(으)ㄴ 후에

after X: plain order, also nouns and time spans

They swap in most verb sentences; use -(으)ㄴ 후에 for nouns, time spans and different subjects.

The table shows that the patterns share their meaning but differ in what they can attach to. Each one gets a close look next.

When Do You Use -고 나서?

Use -고 나서 when you want to stress that the first action is done before the second begins. It is the natural choice with verbs when one person does two things in a row: first this, and after it is all over, that.

  • 밥을 먹고 나서 약을 먹어요. (babeul meokgo naseo yageul meogeoyo.) = "After I finish eating, I take medicine." The word 먹고 나서 sounds like [먹꼬나서].
  • 음악을 듣고 나서 잤어요. (eumageul deutgo naseo jasseoyo.) = "After listening to music, I went to sleep."
  • 졸업하고 나서 일할 거예요. (joreopago naseo ilhal geoyeyo.) = "I will work after I graduate."

The helper verb 나다 gives the "finished" feeling, and the pattern is always written with a space: 고 나서. To build it, remove 다 from the dictionary form and add 고 나서. The stem never changes, so irregular verbs are easy here:

Dictionary form Meaning -고 나서 form
하다 to do 하고 나서
먹다 to eat 먹고 나서
듣다 to listen 듣고 나서 (the ㄷ stays)
만들다 to make 만들고 나서 (the ㄹ stays)
놀다 to play 놀고 나서 (the ㄹ stays)
돕다 to help 돕고 나서 (the ㅂ stays)

The form is easy to build, so the question is when to prefer the other one. First, look at the second pattern.

When Do You Use -(으)ㄴ 후에?

Use -(으)ㄴ 후에 when you only need the order, or when you attach it to a noun or a time span. The word 후 means "after," and the particle 에 marks the time. It is a little more formal than the casual 뒤에.

With a verb. The verb takes the past modifier form -(으)ㄴ: 저녁을 먹은 후에 산책해요 (jeonyeogeul meogeun hue sanchaekaeyo) = "I take a walk after I eat dinner." The word 먹은 후에 sounds like [머근후에].

With a noun. The noun comes directly before 후에: 수업 후에 친구를 만나요 = "I meet my friend after class." -고 나서 cannot do this, because it needs a verb. You can also say 수업이 끝난 후에, using the verb 끝나다.

With a time span. 후에 also means "later" after a length of time: 삼 일 후에 만나요 (sam il hue mannayo) = "See you in three days."

With a different subject. 제가 나간 후에 비가 왔어요 = "It rained after I went out." Here the subjects differ (I, rain), and 후에 handles it more easily than -고 나서.

To build the verb form, use the past modifier of the verb:

Dictionary form Meaning -(으)ㄴ 후에 form
하다 to do 한 후에
마시다 to drink 마신 후에
가다 to go 간 후에
먹다 to eat 먹은 후에
듣다 to listen 들은 후에 (ㄷ becomes ㄹ)
만들다 to make 만든 후에 (the ㄹ drops)
놀다 to play 논 후에 (the ㄹ drops)
돕다 to help 도운 후에 (ㅂ becomes 우)

The word 들은 후에 sounds like [드른후에]. This pattern asks more of the speaker because the stem can change, so the next section shows what happens in a real sentence.

Worked Example: One Sentence in Both Patterns

Follow the steps with "I go to sleep after I listen to music."

  1. Start with the two actions. 음악을 듣다 (listen to music) and 자다 (sleep).
  2. Build the first clause with -고 나서. The stem 듣- stays the same: 듣고 나서.
  3. Build the first clause with -(으)ㄴ 후에. The stem 듣- is a ㄷ verb, so it becomes 들- before a vowel: 들은 후에.
  4. Add the main verb in the tense you need. For the past: 잤어요.
  5. Read both sentences. 음악을 듣고 나서 잤어요 and 음악을 들은 후에 잤어요.

You will know it worked when both sentences mean "after listening to music, I went to sleep" and only the first clause changed form. The most common slip is writing *듣은 후에. The ㄷ verb needs 들은.

Can You Use Both in the Same Sentence?

You can use both in one passage, but not in one clause. A natural pair: 수업이 끝난 후에 숙제를 하고 나서 집에 가요 ("After class ends, I finish my homework and then go home"). The first uses 후에 with a verb, and the second uses -고 나서 for the next step.

The overlap is wide. In the verb sentences above, either pattern gives the same meaning. When you want to emphasize that the first action is over, -고 나서 gives a slightly stronger feeling. When you want a relaxed order, 후에 or 뒤에 is enough.

The overlap stops at nouns and time spans. A verb such as 끝나다 works with both (수업이 끝나고 나서, 수업이 끝난 후에), but the plain noun needs 수업 후에. Since the overlap is wide and the limits are clear, a single rule is enough.

Which One Should You Pick? a Simple Rule of Thumb

Pick by what comes before the word "after." Use this four-step check.

  1. Look at the first part. Is it a verb, a noun or a time span?
  2. If it is a noun or a time span, use 후에 (수업 후에, 삼 일 후에).
  3. If it is a verb and one person does both actions, either one works. Choose -고 나서 to stress that the first action is finished.
  4. If the two clauses have different subjects, choose -(으)ㄴ 후에.

Apply the check to "after dinner." The first part is a noun, so use 저녁 식사 후에 or 저녁 후에. Apply it to "after I finish dinner." It is a verb and the speaker stresses the finish, so use 저녁을 먹고 나서.

If you cannot decide, -(으)ㄴ 후에 is the safer choice, because it fits more situations. The next section looks at the places where learners slip.

What Mistakes Do Learners Make with These Two?

What mistakes do learners make with these two?
What mistakes do learners make with these two?

Learners most often change the wrong part of the verb. Four mistakes appear again and again.

  1. Adding a tense marker to the first clause. *먹었고 나서 and *먹었은 후에 are wrong. The first clause stays tenseless, and the tense goes on the final verb: 먹고 나서 갔어요.
  2. Not changing irregular stems before -(으)ㄴ. *듣은 후에, *놀은 후에 and *돕은 후에 are wrong. Use 들은 후에, 논 후에 and 도운 후에.
  3. Using -고 나서 with a noun. *수업 나서 and *수업하고 나서 후에 are wrong. For a noun, use 수업 후에.
  4. Mixing the two endings. *먹고 후에 and *먹은 나서 are wrong. Each pattern keeps its own set of parts.

Use this checklist when a sentence feels wrong: Is the first clause tenseless? Did the stem change correctly? Is it a verb or a noun? The remaining differences are edge cases.

When Do the Two Patterns Work Differently?

The two patterns work differently with tone, with time spans and with sound changes.

  • Tone. 후에 sounds slightly more formal than 뒤에, and both are common. You can use 다음에 (next, afterwards) as a third choice: 먹은 다음에 갔어요.
  • Time spans. Only 후에 works with lengths of time: 한 시간 후에 (an hour later), 일 년 후에 (a year later).
  • Strong sequence. If the two actions are tightly connected, such as going somewhere to do something, Korean uses -아/어서 instead, which is covered in a separate comparison.
  • One honest limit. This page covers everyday sequences with the polite ending. Other "after" patterns, such as -자마자 (right after) and -(으)ㄴ 뒤에, are covered in their own lessons.

Because the two patterns agree in most sentences, a few practice items on the exceptions are the most useful.

Practice: Choose the Right Pattern

Try the five items before you read the answer key.

  1. Choose. "I will meet you after class." Which fits: 수업 후에 or 수업하고 나서?
  2. Build. Make both forms for 듣다: "after listening."
  3. Fix the error. A learner says 밥을 먹었고 나서 갔어요. What should change?
  4. Translate. "See you in three days." Use 후에.
  5. Choose. "It rained after I went out." Which fits better, -고 나서 or -(으)ㄴ 후에?

Read the examples and check your answer.

  1. "I will meet you after class." Which fits?

    1. 수업은 후에
    2. 수업하고 나서 후에
    3. 수업 나서
    4. 수업 후에
    Show answer

    수업 후에

"Class" here is the noun 수업, and a noun takes 후에 directly.

  2. Which pair is correct for 듣다 ("after listening")?

    1. 들고 나서 / 듣은 후에
    2. 듣고 나서 / 듣은 후에
    3. 듣고 나서 / 들은 후에
    4. 들고 나서 / 들은 후에
    Show answer

    듣고 나서 / 들은 후에

-고 나서 keeps the stem 듣-. Before -(으)ㄴ the ㄷ-irregular stem becomes 들-.

  3. Fix the error: 밥을 먹었고 나서 갔어요.

    1. 밥을 먹었고 나서 가요.
    2. 밥을 먹고 나서 갔었고요.
    3. 밥을 먹었은 후에 갔어요.
    4. 밥을 먹고 나서 갔어요.
    Show answer

    밥을 먹고 나서 갔어요.

The first clause takes no tense marker. The past goes on the last verb.

  4. "See you in three days." Which is correct?

    1. 삼 일 나서 만나요.
    2. 삼 일은 후에 만나요.
    3. 삼 일 하고 나서 만나요.
    4. 삼 일 후에 만나요.
    Show answer

    삼 일 후에 만나요.

Only 후에 works after a length of time.

  5. "It rained after I went out." Which fits better?

    1. 제가 나가고 후에 비가 왔어요.
    2. 제가 나간 후에 비가 왔어요.
    3. 제가 나간 나서 비가 왔어요.
    4. 제가 나갔은 후에 비가 왔어요.
    Show answer

    제가 나간 후에 비가 왔어요.

The two clauses have different subjects, so -(으)ㄴ 후에 is the better choice.

Answer key

  1. 수업 후에. "Class" here is the noun 수업, and a noun needs 후에. The verb 수업하다 means to hold a class, which is what a teacher does.
  2. 듣고 나서 and 들은 후에.
  3. 밥을 먹고 나서 갔어요. The first clause takes no tense.
  4. 삼 일 후에 만나요.
  5. -(으)ㄴ 후에: 제가 나간 후에 비가 왔어요. The subjects differ.

A final test: if the "after" is followed by a noun or a time span, use 후에. If both actions belong to one person and the first one is finished, -고 나서 is a natural choice.

What Should You Learn Next?

After this comparison, study each pattern on its own and then compare other sequence patterns. This page compares the two patterns but does not teach every use of either one.

  1. Read the full lesson on -고 나서, which covers more examples of finished actions.
  2. Read the full lesson on -(으)ㄴ 후에, which covers the full set of irregular stems.
  3. See how another sequence pattern differs in -고 vs -아/어서.
  4. Check the beginner list at Beginner Grammar to see where both patterns sit among the A2 lessons.
  5. Compare other confusing pairs at Confusing Grammar Compared.

With these steps, the choice between -고 나서 and -(으)ㄴ 후에 becomes automatic: look at what comes before "after," then add the matching ending.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between -고 나서 and -(으)ㄴ 후에?

Both mean "after." -고 나서 stresses that the first action is finished before the second begins and works with verbs only. -(으)ㄴ 후에 simply places an event after another, and 후에 also works with nouns and time spans. In many verb sentences you can swap them.

Can I always replace -고 나서 with -(으)ㄴ 후에?

Mostly yes with verbs, but not always the other way round. -(으)ㄴ 후에 can follow a noun (수업 후에) or a time span (삼 일 후에), where -고 나서 does not fit. Swapping -고 나서 for 후에 is usually safe because the meaning just becomes less focused on completion.

Which one sounds more natural in speech?

Both are natural. In casual speech you also hear 뒤에, which is a more relaxed match for 후에, and plain -고 for a loose sequence. -고 나서 is common when a speaker stresses that something is over, and 후에 is common with time words. Neither is rare.

Which one appears more often on TOPIK?

No reliable count is available, so this site makes no claim. Both patterns belong to elementary grammar and can appear in short passages about daily routines. What helps most is knowing the stem changes before -(으)ㄴ and the no-tense rule for the first clause.

What is the quickest rule to remember?

Look at what comes before "after." If it is a noun or a time span, use 후에. If it is a verb done by one person, either pattern works, and -고 나서 stresses that the first action is finished. If the subjects differ, use -(으)ㄴ 후에.
