-(으)ㄴ/는 덕분에 Grammar in Korean: Meaning and How to Use It

-(으)ㄴ/는 덕분에 grammar is how Korean says "thanks to." Put a modifier ending before 덕분에, or put 덕분에 right after a noun. 선생님이 도와주신 덕분에 합격했어요 means "Thanks to my teacher's help, I passed." The pattern gives credit to a cause, and the result must be something good.

What you'll learn

  • Attach 덕분에 to nouns, verbs and adjectives.
  • Choose the present modifier -는 or the past modifier -(으)ㄴ.
  • Keep the result positive, and know what to say for a negative result.
  • Tell -(으)ㄴ/는 덕분에 apart from 탓에 and 때문에.

Prerequisites: the lesson on -기 때문에, and the modifier endings -는 and -(으)ㄴ. Time: about 15 minutes.

Key facts

  • 덕분에 means "thanks to." It shows gratitude to the cause.
  • The result is always good or welcome.
  • With a noun, 덕분에 follows after a space: 친구 덕분에. With a verb or adjective, the modifier comes first.
  • The modifier shows time: -는 for something ongoing, -(으)ㄴ for something finished.
  • Set replies such as 덕분에 잘 지내요 turn the pattern into a polite thank-you.

Listen to two model sentences.

The next section defines the pattern.

What Does -(으)ㄴ/는 덕분에 Grammar Mean?

덕분 is a noun that means "help, favour, credit." 덕분에 is that noun plus the particle 에, so the whole word means "owing to the favour of." When you say it, you tell the listener, "This good thing happened because of this person or this circumstance, and I am grateful."

That is why two conditions hold.

  • The result is good. Passing an exam, having a nice picnic and getting better at Korean are all good results.
  • The cause is something you credit. It is often a person, but it can also be the weather, luck or your own effort.
Part 선생님이 도와주신 덕분에 합격했어요. 날씨가 좋은 덕분에 소풍이 즐거웠어요.
Cause 선생님이 도와주신 덕분에 (thanks to my teacher's help) 날씨가 좋은 덕분에 (thanks to the good weather)
Result 합격했어요 (I passed) 소풍이 즐거웠어요 (the picnic was fun)
Spoken [선생니미 도와주신 덕뿌네 합껴캐써요] [날씨가 조은 덕뿌네 소풍이 즐거워써요]
RR (aid) seonsaengnimi dowajusin deokbune hapgyeokaesseoyo nalssiga joeun deokbune sopungi jeulgeowosseoyo
English Thanks to my teacher's help, I passed. Thanks to the good weather, the picnic was fun.

In the first example, the cause is a person. In the second, it is the weather. Both results are good. Notice that the RR of 합격했어요 is hapgyeokaesseoyo: in a predicate, RR writes the aspirated ㅋ that comes from ㄱ and ㅎ meeting. The next section shows how to build the form.

How Do You Form -(으)ㄴ/는 덕분에?

There are three cases: a noun, a verb and an adjective. In each case, write 덕분에 as a separate word, because 덕분 is a noun.

With a Noun

Add 덕분에 after a space. No particle is needed.

Noun With 덕분에 Meaning RR (aid)
친구 (friend) 친구 덕분에 thanks to my friend chingu deokbune
선생님 (teacher) 선생님 덕분에 thanks to my teacher seonsaengnim deokbune
부모님 (parents) 부모님 덕분에 thanks to my parents bumonim deokbune
날씨 (weather) 날씨 덕분에 thanks to the weather nalssi deokbune

With a Verb

Use the modifier ending. The modifier is the ending that turns a verb into a describing word before a noun. Before 덕분에, it shows time.

  • -는 (ongoing). Use it for help that is still going on or happens regularly.
  • -(으)ㄴ (finished). Use it for help that has already happened.
Dictionary form Ongoing -는 Finished -(으)ㄴ RR (aid)
도와주다 (help) 도와주는 덕분에 도와준 덕분에 dowajuneun deokbune, dowajun deokbune
운동하다 (exercise) 운동하는 덕분에 운동한 덕분에 undonghaneun deokbune, undonghan deokbune
응원하다 (cheer) 응원하는 덕분에 응원한 덕분에 eungwonhaneun deokbune, eungwonhan deokbune
일어나다 (get up) 일어나는 덕분에 일어난 덕분에 ireonaneun deokbune, ireonan deokbune
살다 (live) 사는 덕분에 산 덕분에 saneun deokbune, san deokbune

For a verb with a final consonant, the forms are 먹는 (ongoing) and 먹은 (finished). The honorific 시 goes inside the modifier when the helper deserves respect: 도와주시는 덕분에 (ongoing) and 도와주신 덕분에 (finished). The ㄹ stems drop ㄹ before ㄴ, so 살다 becomes 사는 and 산.

Use the finished form when the result has already happened. 선생님이 도와주신 덕분에 합격했어요 uses 도와주신 because the help came before the pass. Use the ongoing form when the help continues: 매일 운동하는 덕분에 건강해요 ("Thanks to exercising every day, I am healthy").

With an Adjective

Use -(으)ㄴ. The ending is ㄴ after a vowel and 은 after a consonant.

Dictionary form Modifier With 덕분에 RR (aid)
좋다 (be good) 좋은 좋은 덕분에 joeun deokbune
건강하다 (be healthy) 건강한 건강한 덕분에 geonganghan deokbune
친절하다 (be kind) 친절한 친절한 덕분에 chinjeolhan deokbune
즐겁다 (be fun) 즐거운 즐거운 덕분에 jeulgeoun deokbune
길다 (be long) 긴 긴 덕분에 gin deokbune

ㅂ-irregular adjectives like 즐겁다 turn ㅂ into 우 before 은, so the form is 즐거운. The ㄹ adjective 길다 drops ㄹ before ㄴ, so the form is 긴.

For a past state, use -았/었던: 날씨가 좋았던 덕분에 ("Thanks to the weather having been good"). The present form 좋은 can still be used when the result is described as it was at that time, as in the model sentence.

The next section builds a full sentence.

Worked Example: Building 선생님이 도와주신 덕분에 합격했어요

Say that you passed an exam thanks to your teacher's help. Follow five steps.

  1. Name the cause. "My teacher helped me" is 선생님이 도와주셨어요, with the honorific 시 for respect. The verb is 도와주다.
  2. Turn the verb into a modifier. The help is finished, so use -(으)ㄴ. With the honorific 시, the form is 도와주신.
  3. Add 덕분에. Write it as a separate word: 도와주신 덕분에.
  4. State the good result. "I passed" is 합격했어요.
  5. Join the parts. 선생님이 도와주신 덕분에 합격했어요.

You'll know it worked when the modifier ends in ㄴ (신), a space follows, 덕분에 comes next, and the result is a good event. If you wanted to credit a person with a noun alone, drop the first half: 선생님 덕분에 합격했어요.

The next section covers tense and sentence types.

Which Tenses and Sentence Types Work with -(으)ㄴ/는 덕분에?

Time is shown by the modifier before 덕분에, and the speech level goes on the last verb.

Slot Form Example English
Ongoing action verb + 는 운동하는 덕분에 thanks to exercising (now)
Finished action verb + (으)ㄴ 도와준 덕분에 thanks to having helped
Present state adjective + (으)ㄴ 건강한 덕분에 thanks to being healthy
Past state adjective + 았/었던 좋았던 덕분에 thanks to having been good
Result: statement past or present 합격했어요. I passed.
Result: question wh-question 누구 덕분에 합격했어요? Thanks to whom did you pass?
Command or suggestion not natural 도와준 덕분에 가세요. (does not fit)

The result is usually a statement, because the pattern reports something that has happened. A question can ask for the source of the credit: 누구 덕분에 합격했어요? A wh-question puts the stress on the question word and often ends with a fall or a rise-fall, rather than a sharp rise. Commands and suggestions do not fit, because the pattern gives thanks for a fact.

The result is often in the past (합격했어요, 즐거웠어요), but it can be in the present when the effect continues: 친구가 있는 덕분에 외롭지 않아요 ("Thanks to having friends, I am not lonely").

The next section compares 덕분에 with 탓에 and 때문에.

How Is -(으)ㄴ/는 덕분에 Different from -(으)ㄴ/는 탓에?

All three give a cause. The difference is how the speaker feels about the cause and the result.

Pattern Feeling Result Example
덕분에 gratitude, credit good 선생님 덕분에 합격했어요.
탓에 blame bad 늦게 일어난 탓에 지각했어요.
때문에 neutral cause good or bad 비 때문에 길이 막혔어요.

Compare these.

  • 선생님 덕분에 합격했어요. "Thanks to my teacher, I passed." Gratitude.
  • 늦게 일어난 탓에 지각했어요. "Because I got up late, I was late." The speaker blames the cause. 일어난 is the finished modifier of 일어나다.
  • 비 때문에 길이 막혔어요. "The roads were jammed because of the rain." This is a plain statement of cause.

A cause that gives a bad result can sound sarcastic with 덕분에. 네 덕분에 다 망쳤어 means "Thanks a lot, you ruined everything." The speaker uses the word of thanks to complain. Learners should avoid this use until they can control their tone. For serious complaints, use 탓에 or 때문에.

For a full side-by-side with practice, see -(으)ㄴ/는 덕분에 vs -(으)ㄴ/는 탓에.

The next section covers set phrases and edge cases.

Variations and Edge Cases of -(으)ㄴ/는 덕분에

Set Replies

덕분에 can stand alone as a polite reply. When someone asks how you are, you can credit them for your good health or luck.

Phrase Use RR (aid)
덕분에 잘 지내요. Reply to "How are you?": "I'm well, thanks to you." deokbune jal jinaeyo
덕분에 살았어요. "You saved me." After receiving help in a tight spot. deokbune sarasseoyo
부모님 덕분이에요. "It's thanks to my parents." bumonim deokbunieyo

The last row uses 덕분 as a predicate: 이에요 follows the final consonant ㄴ, so 덕분이에요 is said [덕뿌니에요]. You can also say it with 덕분입니다 in the formal style. Use this phrase when someone praises you and you want to pass on the credit.

Shorter and More Formal Forms

덕에 is a shorter, more casual form: 네 덕에 살았어. 덕택에 is a close synonym and sounds a little more formal or old-fashioned. All three give credit.

Honorific Respect

When the helper is older or senior, put the honorific 시 in the modifier: 선생님께서 도와주신 덕분에. The particle 께서 is the honorific subject marker.

What You Cannot Do

You cannot drop the modifier from a verb: 도와주 덕분에 is wrong. You also cannot put the polite ending 요 before 덕분에: 도와줘요 덕분에 is wrong. The modifier -는 or -(으)ㄴ must come first.
