Key facts
- -다 보니(까) means "as I kept doing X, I realised Y".
- The form is the plain stem + 다 보니, with no change for any kind of stem.
- The result grows slowly while the action goes on.
- No tense marker goes inside the first clause.
- The result clause is a finding or a change, and never a command.
Listen to two model sentences.
The next section defines the pattern.
What Does -다 보니(까) Grammar Mean?
-다 보니(까) means "as I kept doing X, I realised Y". A connective ending is a word ending that joins one clause to the next. This connective ending tells the listener, "I did something over and over, or for a long time, and something came out of it."
The pattern has parts that you can see. The 다 is the short form of -다가, which shows that an action is going on. The verb 보다 here means "to see" in the sense of "to find out". The ending -니(까) marks the moment of finding. Together, the parts give the idea "continuing, I found".
Here are two glossed examples.
| Part | 한국어를 공부하다 보니 재미있어졌어요. | 살다 보니 한국이 좋아졌어요. |
|---|---|---|
| First clause | 한국어를 공부하다 보니 (as I kept studying Korean) | 살다 보니 (as I kept living here) |
| Result clause | 재미있어졌어요 (it became fun) | 한국이 좋아졌어요 (I came to like Korea) |
| Spoken | [한구거를 공부하다 보니 재미이써저써요] | [살다 보니 한구기 조아저써요] |
| RR (aid) | hangugeoreul gongbuhada boni jaemiisseojyeosseoyo | salda boni hangugi joajyeosseoyo |
| English | As I kept studying Korean, it became fun. | As I kept living here, I came to like Korea. |
Revised Romanization (RR) is the national system for writing Korean in the Latin alphabet. It is shown here only as a learning aid.
The next section shows how to build the form.
How Do You Form -다 보니(까)?
The rule is simple. Remove 다 from the dictionary form to get the stem, and add 다 보니. The stem is the verb without its dictionary ending -다. For 먹다 the stem is 먹. Add 까 if you want the longer form.
| Dictionary form | Stem | Stem + 다 보니 | Spoken | RR (aid) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
After a final consonant, the ㄷ of 다 is said as a tense ㄸ, so 먹다 보니 sounds like [먹따 보니]. This tensing happens in speech only. RR does not mark tensing that comes from a neighbouring sound, so it writes meokda boni.
Stems Ending in a Vowel
Vowel stems take 다 directly: 하다 보니, 가다 보니, 보다 보니. There is no contraction. Compare this with -아/어서, where 가 + 아서 becomes 가서.
Stems Ending in a Consonant
Consonant stems also take 다 directly. There is no 으 to insert. This is the same as -다가 and unlike -(으)니까, which adds 으 after a consonant.
Irregular Stems
Irregular stems do not change before 다 보니. An irregular stem is one that changes its shape before an ending that begins with a vowel. 다 begins with a consonant, so the change never happens.
| Type | Dictionary form | With 다 보니 | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| ㄷ-irregular | 듣다 (listen) | 듣다 보니 | ㄷ stays; compare 들어요 |
| ㅂ-irregular | 돕다 (help) | 돕다 보니 | ㅂ stays; compare 도와요 |
| 르-irregular | 모르다 (not know) | 모르다 보니 | 르 stays; compare 몰라요 |
| ㄹ stem | 알다 (know) | 알다 보니 | ㄹ stays; it drops only before ㄴ, ㅂ and ㅅ |
| ㅡ stem | 쓰다 (write) | 쓰다 보니 | ㅡ stays; compare 써요 |
Spoken, 돕다 보니 is [돕따 보니].
With a verb, the pattern describes something you keep doing. Adjectives and 이다 can also take it, with a different shade: a lasting situation that leads to a result, as in 집이 멀다 보니 자주 못 가요 ("My home is far away, so I can't go often") or 학생이다 보니 돈이 없어요. This lesson focuses on the verb use. The next section builds a full sentence.
Worked Example: Building 한국어를 공부하다 보니 재미있어졌어요
Say that Korean became fun as you kept studying. Follow five steps.
- Write the process. "I study Korean" is 한국어를 공부해요 in the polite style.
- Find the stem. The dictionary form is 공부하다, so the stem is 공부하.
- Add 다 보니. 공부하 + 다 보니 = 공부하다 보니. Take away the polite ending, because the ending belongs to the last verb only.
- Write the result. "It became fun" is 재미있어졌어요. The verb 재미있어지다 means "become fun". The helper 아/어지다 turns a state into a change.
- Join the two parts. 한국어를 공부하다 보니 재미있어졌어요.
You'll know it worked when the first verb ends in 다 보니 with a space before 보니 and nothing else inside, and the polite ending 요 appears only once, at the end. Try the same steps with "As I exercised every day, I became healthy": 운동하다 gives 운동하다 보니, and 건강해졌어요 follows.

The next section covers what can follow.
Which Tenses and Sentence Types Work with -다 보니(까)?
The first clause is not marked for tense. You never write 공부했다 보니. The result clause shows the time, and it is usually a past change or a present finding.
| Result type | Example | English |
|---|---|---|
| change with 아/어지다 | 매일 운동하다 보니 건강해졌어요. | As I exercised every day, I became healthy. |
| coming to do with 게 되다 | 한국에서 살다 보니 김치를 좋아하게 됐어요. | As I lived in Korea, I came to like kimchi. |
| a consequence | 게임을 하다 보니 밤을 새웠어요. | As I kept playing the game, I stayed up all night. |
| a finding in the present | 살다 보니 이런 일도 있어요. | As you go on living, things like this happen. |
Spoken, 매일 운동하다 보니 건강해졌어요 is [매일 운동하다 보니 건강해저써요], and 김치를 좋아하게 됐어요 is [김치를 조아하게 돼써요].
What cannot follow is a command or a suggestion. The result clause reports what was found, so a request does not fit. Wrong: 공부하다 보니 쉬세요. If you want to say "Study, then take a break", use -다가: 공부하다가 쉬세요.
| Sentence type | Allowed after 보니? | Example |
|---|---|---|
| statement | yes | 일하다 보니 늦었어요. |
| yes/no question | yes | 한국에서 살다 보니 좋아졌어요? |
| wh-question | yes | 한국에서 살다 보니 어땠어요? |
| command | no | use -다가 or -(으)니까 instead |
| suggestion | no | use another pattern |
Yes/no questions usually end with a rise. A wh-question puts the stress on the question word and often ends with a fall or a rise-fall, rather than a sharp final rise.
The next section compares -다 보니(까) with similar patterns.
How Is -다 보니(까) Different from Nearby Patterns?
Four patterns look alike, but each does a different job.
| Pattern | Core idea | Example | Feeling |
|---|---|---|---|
| -다 보니(까) | a result that grows as you continue | 공부하다 보니 재미있어졌어요. | Over time, it became fun. |
| -다가 | a break or a switch | 공부하다가 잠이 들었어요. | The studying stopped, and sleep took over. |
| -아/어 보니(까) | a discovery after one try | 먹어 보니까 맛있었어요. | I tried it and found it tasty. |
| -(으)니까 | a reason | 맛있으니까 먹어요. | Because it is tasty, I eat it. |
Look at the helper 보다. In -아/어 보니(까), 보다 means "try", and the finding comes after a single try. In -다 보니(까), the finding comes from keeping on, not from one try. The key question is whether time passed. If you did something for a while and noticed a change, use -다 보니(까). If you did something once and noticed a result, use -아/어 보니(까).
Now compare with -다가. With 공부하다가, you were studying, and something cut it off. With 공부하다 보니, you kept studying, and you ended up with a result. In the first, the studying stops. In the second, the studying goes on.
The next section covers set phrases and edge cases.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Does -다 보니(까) Mean?
-다 보니(까) means "as I kept doing X, I realised Y". It links a continuing action to a result that appeared slowly. 한국어를 공부하다 보니 재미있어졌어요 means "As I kept studying Korean, it became fun." The first part is a process, and the second part is what the speaker found or what changed.
How Do I Attach -다 보니(까) to a Verb or Adjective?
With a verb, remove 다 from the dictionary form and add 다 보니 or 다 보니까. 먹다 becomes 먹다 보니, 공부하다 becomes 공부하다 보니 and 듣다 becomes 듣다 보니. Nothing changes for final consonants or irregular verbs. Write a space before 보니. Adjectives and 이다 can take it too, meaning "since it is so", as in 집이 멀다 보니.
Can -다 보니(까) Be Used in the past Tense?
You do not put 았/었 inside the first clause, so 공부했다 보니 is wrong. The pattern itself is not marked for tense. The result clause usually shows the time, and it is often past: 재미있어졌어요. A present result is also fine, as in 살다 보니 이런 일도 있어요.
Is -다 보니(까) Used in Speech or Only in Writing?
It is used in both and is very common in conversation, blogs and essays. Speakers use it to explain how something came about, as in 하다 보니 늦었어요, "one thing led to another and I was late". The 까 is optional. Both 보니 and 보니까 work in polite, casual and formal speech.
What Is the Most Common Mistake with -다 보니(까)?
Learners use it for a single action with a single result, as in 한 번 먹다 보니 맛있어요. This pattern needs time passing or repeated action. For one try and one finding, use -아/어 보니(까), as in 먹어 보니까 맛있어요. Another slip is ending the sentence with a command.
What Is the Difference between -다 보니(까) and -다가?
-다가 shows a break, where one action is interrupted or replaced by another, as in 공부하다가 잠이 들었어요. -다 보니(까) shows a result that grows as you continue, as in 공부하다 보니 재미있어졌어요. With -다가, the first action stops. With -다 보니(까), the first action goes on, and the finding comes from it.
