-기가 무섭게 Grammar in Korean: Meaning and How to Use It

-기가 무섭게 grammar is the Korean connector pattern for "the moment that" or "no sooner than". Add -기가 무섭게 to an action verb stem, as in 퇴근하기가 무섭게 나갔어요 ("She left the moment work ended"). The stem never changes, the tense goes only on the last verb, and the tone is vivid and a little dramatic.

Before you start: you should know -자마자, the neutral "as soon as" pattern, and how to find a verb stem (the dictionary form without its final 다, such as 퇴근하 in 퇴근하다). The lesson on -기 nominalizer explains the -기 inside the pattern. Estimated time: 15 minutes.

What Does -기가 무섭게 Grammar Mean?

-기가 무섭게 grammar means "the moment that" or "no sooner than". It joins two actions and says that the second one followed the first so fast that it is almost startling. In 퇴근하기가 무섭게 나갔어요, there was no pause at all between the end of work and the exit. The phrase works like a connective ending (연결 어미, yeongyeol eomi), a form that links one clause to the next.

The pattern is built from three pieces. The first is -기, an ending that turns a verb into a noun. The second is the subject marker 가. The third is 무섭게, the adverb form of 무섭다 ("scary"). Put together, the picture is "the doing is so fast it is frightening". You do not need to translate it word for word. Learn it as one fixed phrase meaning "the very moment".

Two ideas make this pattern different from -자마자. The first is intensity: the sentence stresses how quick the follow-up was, often with a hint of surprise or humour. The second is style. -기가 무섭게 sounds lively and storylike, so you meet it in narration, news, essays and animated conversation more often than in plain instructions.

집에 오기가 무섭게 잠들었다.

jibe ogiga museopge jamdeureotda.

He fell asleep the moment he got home.

퇴근하기가 무섭게 나갔어요.

toegeunhagiga museopge nagasseoyo.

She left the moment work ended.

수업이 끝나기가 무섭게 학생들이 교실을 뛰어나갔어요.

sueobi kkeunnagiga museopge haksaengdeuri gyosireul ttwieonagasseoyo.

The students ran out of the room the moment class ended.

The first verb in each example has no tense, and the second example shows one person doing both actions. The third example has two subjects: the class ends, and the students run out. The next section shows how to build the form on every kind of verb.

How Do You Form -기가 무섭게?

You form -기가 무섭게 by adding it to the verb stem, with nothing in between and no change to the stem. There is only one version of the ending, so you never choose between -기가 and -으기가. The ending starts with the consonant ㄱ, so irregular verbs do not change their stems.

Verb Dictionary form With -기가 무섭게 Sound Revised Romanization

Revised Romanization (RR, the official Latin spelling) follows the sounds of the words but does not show tensing caused by a neighbouring sound. So 무섭게 is written museopge even though it is said [무섭께]. RR does write ㄲ, ㄸ and ㅃ when they appear in Hangul, as in 끝나 (kkeunna). Words separated by a space are romanized separately.

Stems Ending in a Vowel

Add -기가 무섭게 after the vowel and say it as written: 보기가 무섭게, 오기가 무섭게, 만나기가 무섭게, 일어나기가 무섭게. The ㄱ of -기 stays plain after a vowel, so there is no sound change inside 기가. One sound change always remains: the ㄱ of 무섭게 is tense, because the ㅂ in front of it is a final sound that tenses the next consonant. A tense consonant is a sharper, tighter sound, written ㄲ, ㄸ, ㅃ, ㅆ or ㅉ when it has its own letter. So 무섭게 is said [무섭께] after every stem.

Stems Ending in a Consonant

Add -기가 무섭게 after the final consonant. The spelling stays, but the sound changes in two places. First, the ㄱ of -기 becomes tense after a final ㄱ, ㄷ or ㅂ (Standard Pronunciation Rules, 표준 발음법, Article 23) and after a stem ending in ㄴ or ㅁ (Article 24). So 먹기가 is said [먹끼가], and 듣기가 is said [듣끼가]. Second, a double final consonant keeps one sound: 읽 is said [일], and 앉 is said [안]. That gives [일끼가] and [안끼가]. After ㄹ, nothing becomes tense, so 놀기가 is said [놀기가].

  • 먹기가 무섭게 설거지를 했어요. ("She did the dishes the moment she finished eating.")
  • 앉기가 무섭게 졸았어요. ("I dozed off the moment I sat down.")

Irregular Stems and Nouns

Irregular verbs do not change before -기가 무섭게. They change their stem only before endings that start with a vowel. The ending -기 starts with the consonant ㄱ, so 듣다 stays 듣기가 (not 들기가), 돕다 stays 돕기가 (not 도우기가), and 모르다 stays 모르기가.

You cannot put -기가 무섭게 after a noun, an adjective or 이다. A noun needs a verb with it: 퇴근 (leaving work) becomes 퇴근하기가 무섭게. Adjectives do not take it, because the pattern needs a first event that happens at a moment. Next, here is one full sentence built step by step.

Worked Example: Building a Sentence with -기가 무섭게

You build the sentence in five steps, working from the two quick events you want to join. This example makes "I replied the moment I read the message".

  1. Write both actions with their dictionary verbs. 메시지를 읽다 and 답장하다.
  2. Decide which action comes first. Reading comes first, so it goes into the -기가 무섭게 clause.
  3. Find the stem of the first verb. Remove 다 from 읽다. The stem is 읽.
  4. Add -기가 무섭게. 읽 + 기가 무섭게 = 읽기가 무섭게, said [일끼가 무섭께].
  5. Give the last verb its tense and politeness. 답장하다 becomes the polite past 답장했어요. Put the clause first: 메시지를 읽기가 무섭게 답장했어요.

Sentence

I replied the moment I read the message.

메시지를읽기가무섭게답장했어요
Show answer

메시지를 읽기가 무섭게 답장했어요

Checkpoint. You have it when you can turn the sentence into a habit without touching 읽기가 무섭게. The answer is 메시지를 읽기가 무섭게 답장해요 [메시지를 일끼가 무섭께 답짱해요], "I reply the moment I read a message". Only the last verb changes.

The sentence built here is a statement about a finished event. The next section shows which tenses and sentence types can follow -기가 무섭게.

Which Tenses and Sentence Types Work with -기가 무섭게?

The last verb is usually past or a present habit, and the verb in front of -기가 무섭게 stays bare. The ending carries no tense. The time is read from the final verb.

Feature Where it goes Example
Past event final verb 집에 오기가 무섭게 잠들었어요.
Present habit final verb 밥을 먹기가 무섭게 졸려요.
Plain written past final verb 집에 오기가 무섭게 잠들었다.
Different subjects allowed 방송이 나가기가 무섭게 주문이 쏟아졌어요.
Request or command not natural 도착하기가 무섭게 전화하세요 is awkward
Tense in the first clause not allowed 왔기가 무섭게 is wrong
Adjective or 이다 in the first clause not allowed 좋기가 무섭게 is wrong

The pattern describes how things turned out, so it fits reports of events and habits. It does not fit requests, because you cannot easily ask someone to be "startlingly fast". For requests, use -자마자 instead: 도착하자마자 전화하세요 is fine.

밥을 먹기가 무섭게 졸려요.

babeul meokgiga museopge jollyeoyo.

I get sleepy the moment I eat.

월급이 들어오기가 무섭게 다 써 버렸어요.

wolgeubi deureoogiga museopge da sseo beoryeosseoyo.

I spent it all the moment my pay came in.

Next comes the pattern that learners confuse with -기가 무섭게 most often.

How Is -기가 무섭게 Different from -자마자?

-기가 무섭게 is a stronger, more vivid way to say what -자마자 says. Both mean that the second action followed the first at once. -자마자 is neutral, a plain report of speed. -기가 무섭게 adds a feeling of surprise, speed or exaggeration. The lesson on -자마자 gives its full rules.

Compare 집에 오자마자 잠들었어요 and 집에 오기가 무섭게 잠들었어요. Both say "I fell asleep as soon as I got home". The second adds a sense of "I was out like a light". It is also the one you would pick when telling a funny story.

Use -자마자 for a neutral report or a request; use -기가 무섭게 for a vivid report of a very quick follow-up.

A quick test: if you could add "in a flash" to the English, -기가 무섭게 fits. If you only mean "right after", -자마자 is safer. Next are the useful variations of the pattern.

Variations and Edge Cases of -기가 무섭게

-기가 무섭게 has three useful variations: the shorter form, the plain written style and a look-alike word.

  • -기 무섭게. Speakers often drop 가: 집에 오기 무섭게 잠들었어요. It means the same thing and is common in talk. Both forms are heard, and the form with 가 is the one to learn first.
  • Plain written style. News, essays and stories use the plain past -다 instead of the polite -어요: 집에 오기가 무섭게 잠들었다. The first clause is the same in every style, and only the last verb changes.
  • Do not confuse 무섭게 with "scary". 무섭게 can also be a normal adverb meaning "in a scary way", as in 무섭게 생긴 개가 짖었어요 ("A scary-looking dog barked"). In -기가 무섭게, the word is part of a fixed phrase, and it never means "scary" there.

What Mistakes Do Learners Make with -기가 무섭게?

What mistakes do learners make with -기가 무섭게?
What mistakes do learners make with -기가 무섭게?

Learners make five common mistakes with -기가 무섭게.

  1. Putting a past ending in the first clause. Learners write 도착했기가 무섭게 전화했어요. Actually the first verb stays bare, because the final verb already shows the tense.
  2. Using it with an adjective. Learners write 날씨가 좋기가 무섭게 산책했어요. Actually the pattern needs an event, and 좋다 is a state. Use -아/어서 if you mean a reason.
  3. Using it for a request. Learners write 도착하기가 무섭게 전화하세요. Actually the pattern reports speed that already happened or happens by habit. For a request, say 도착하자마자 전화하세요.
  4. Using it for a slow sequence. Learners write 졸업하기가 무섭게 오 년 후에 결혼했어요. Actually the pattern says the gap is tiny, so a five-year gap makes the sentence wrong. Use -고 나서.
  5. Saying the ㄱ of 먹기가 as plain. Learners follow the spelling and say [먹기가]. Actually the ㄱ is tense after a final ㄱ, so say [먹끼가]. Likewise, 무섭게 is always [무섭께].

Whenever you reach for "the moment that", check that both steps are quick events and that you want a vivid tone. Now test yourself.

-기가 무섭게 joins the bare stem 오 and says the second action followed at once. The other options mean before, while and without.

Exercise 1: Join the events. Make one sentence with -기가 무섭게: 월급이 들어오다 + 다 써 버리다. ("My pay comes in" then "I spend it all".) Use the polite past.

Exercise 2: Fix the error. A learner writes 도착했기가 무섭게 전화했어요. Correct it.

Exercise 3: Choose the right pattern. You want to ask a friend to call you the moment the friend arrives. Is -기가 무섭게 right, or -자마자?

Exercise 4: Translate. "It sold out the moment the shop opened." (open = 문을 열다, sell out = 다 팔리다)

Answer Key

  • Exercise 1: 월급이 들어오기가 무섭게 다 써 버렸어요. [월그비 드러오기가 무섭께 다 써 버려써요] The first verb 들어오 takes -기가 무섭게, and 써 버렸어요 carries the tense.
  • Exercise 2: 도착하기가 무섭게 전화했어요. [도차카기가 무섭께 전화해써요] The first verb loses its past ending.
  • Exercise 3: -자마자. The sentence is 도착하자마자 전화하세요 [도차카자마자 전화하세요]. -기가 무섭게 does not fit a request.
  • Exercise 4: 문을 열기가 무섭게 다 팔렸어요. [무늘 열기가 무섭께 다 팔려써요] The bare stem 열 takes -기가 무섭게.

What Should You Learn Next after -기가 무섭게 Grammar?

The best next lesson is -(으)ㄴ/는 대로, which has a second meaning ("exactly as") and is also used for "as soon as" in promises. Then review -자마자 to keep the neutral and the vivid "the moment" patterns apart. The full set of timing patterns is on Time and Sequence. To see where -기가 무섭게 sits in a study plan, use the Advanced Grammar list. The modifier forms used by neighbouring patterns are explained in Noun-Modifying Forms.

What this lesson does not cover. It does not cover the idiom's origin in detail, the use of -기가 무섭게 with passive verbs, or the many other phrases that contain 무섭다. The level given here, C1, is an editorial estimate based on common textbook order and TOPIK II, not an official grading.

In short, -기가 무섭게 grammar attaches to a bare action verb stem, keeps the first clause free of tense, and says that the second action followed at once, in a vivid tone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does -기가 무섭게 mean? -기가 무섭게 means "the moment that" or "no sooner than". It links two actions and says the second followed the first almost instantly, in a vivid and slightly dramatic way. 퇴근하기가 무섭게 나갔어요 means "She left the moment work ended". The speed is the whole point, and a hint of surprise often comes with it.

How do I attach -기가 무섭게 to a verb? Remove 다 from an action verb and add -기가 무섭게 to the stem: 오다 becomes 오기가 무섭게, 먹다 becomes 먹기가 무섭게. The stem never changes, even for irregular verbs such as 듣다 (듣기가 무섭게). Adjectives and 이다 do not take it, because the pattern needs a first event that happens at a moment.

Can -기가 무섭게 be used in the past tense? The last verb can be past or a present habit, but the verb before -기가 무섭게 stays bare. Say 집에 오기가 무섭게 잠들었어요, "I fell asleep the moment I got home". Do not write 왔기가 무섭게. The final verb carries the tense for the whole sentence, so one tense covers both steps.

Is -기가 무섭게 used in speech or only in writing? -기가 무섭게 appears in both. It is vivid and storylike, so it is common in narration, news, essays and lively talk. Speakers often shorten it to -기 무섭게. In plain instructions and requests, learners should prefer -자마자. Remember the sound: 무섭게 is said [무섭께], and 먹기가 is said [먹끼가].

What is the most common mistake with -기가 무섭게? Learners add a past ending to the first verb, attach it to adjectives, or use it for requests. The pattern needs a bare action verb stem and reports a very quick follow-up, as in 도착하기가 무섭게 전화했어요. For a request, say 도착하자마자 전화하세요. For a slow sequence, use -고 나서.

What is the difference between -기가 무섭게 and -자마자? Both mean the second action followed at once. -자마자 is neutral and works for requests, as in 도착하자마자 전화하세요. -기가 무섭게 is stronger and more vivid: it suggests startling speed and fits reports of events and habits. 집에 오기가 무섭게 잠들었어요 feels like "I was out like a light".
