What you'll learn
- Add 들 to a noun and place the particle after it.
- Decide when 들 is needed and when the bare noun is better.
- Leave 들 out after numbers and other quantity words.
- Read 들 correctly in 우리들, 다들 and 빨리들.
- Fix the most common mistake: adding 들 after a number, as in 세 학생들.
Before you start: you should know what a noun is and that Korean particles such as 이/가 and 을/를 follow nouns. The page on Korean nouns gives the background. Audio plays only when you press a button.
What Does the 들 Plural Marker Mean?
The 들 plural marker means "more than one," and it is added to a noun when the plural idea needs to be clear. Korean nouns are number-neutral by default. The word 사과 can mean "an apple" or "apples," and the context tells you which. 들 removes the doubt.
Dictionaries list 들 as a plural suffix when it follows a noun, and as an auxiliary particle (보조사, bojosa) when it follows adverbs and similar words. For a learner, the useful picture is one small marker that says "several" and that can be dropped when "several" is obvious.
A First Example
Two sentences show the pattern. Each line gives Korean, Revised Romanization (RR, the official Latin spelling, used here only as a learning aid) and the meaning.
- 친구들을 만나요. (chingudeureul mannayo.) [친구드를 만나요] = "I meet my friends." The noun 친구 plus 들 makes the group clear, and 을 marks the object.
- 학생들이 와요. (haksaengdeuri wayo.) [학쌩드리 와요] = "The students are coming." The noun 학생 plus 들 shows that several students arrive, and 이 marks the subject.
In both sentences 들 comes right after the noun and before the particle. The next section explains this order and when to leave 들 out.
How Does the 들 Plural Marker Work?
The 들 plural marker attaches to the noun and comes before any particle. It is dropped when a number or a quantity word already shows plural. The rule has three parts.
Part one: noun + 들 + particle. The plural marker belongs to the noun, so it stays attached to it. The particles come after. Examples: 친구들이 (subject), 친구들을 (object), 친구들은 (topic), 친구들에게 (to the friends), 친구들과 (with the friends).
Part two: no 들 with numbers or quantity words. After a number, the plural is clear: 세 학생이 왔어요 ("Three students came"). Not 세 학생들이. The most common counting pattern, 학생 세 명이 왔어요, also has no 들. Words such as 여러 ("several") and 많은 ("many") already show plural, so 들 is optional with them.
Part three: 들 has one form. Unlike 이/가 or 은/는, 들 does not change after vowels or consonants: 친구들, 학생들, 아이들, 선생님들.
The highlighter shows the three layers: the noun, the plural marker and the object particle. Each has its own label, and the order never changes.
Which Forms Does the Pattern Table Show?
The table lists the starting form, the version with 들, and the situation where each is best. Use it as a lookup.
| Situation | Without 들 | With 들 | Which is better |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plural idea matters, no number | 친구가 와요 | 친구들이 와요 | with 들 |
| A number is present | 세 친구가 와요 | 세 친구들이 와요 | without 들 |
| A group of people | 선생님이 계세요 | 선생님들이 계세요 | with 들 for "teachers" |
| One or many is not important | 사과를 샀어요 | 사과들을 샀어요 | without 들 |
| Objects in a simple sentence | 책이 많아요 | 책들이 많아요 | without 들 |
The table shows that 들 is a choice of emphasis, not a grammar requirement. Now the rule can be used to build a sentence from scratch.
How Do You Build 아이들이 놀아요 Step by Step?
You build a sentence with 들 in four steps: write the base sentence, decide whether the plural matters, add 들 to the noun, and put the particle after it. The example below builds "The children are playing."
- Write the base sentence. 아이가 놀아요. (aiga norayo.) [아이가 노라요] = "The child is playing" or "A child plays." The noun 아이 carries the subject particle 가.
- Decide whether plural matters. Several children are playing together, and no number is given. The plural matters, so 들 is a good choice.
- Add 들 to the noun. 아이 plus 들 gives 아이들. The particle moves behind the marker.
- Put the particle after 들. The word now ends in the consonant ㄹ of 들, so the subject particle is 이: 아이들이 놀아요. (aideuri norayo.) [아이드리 노라요] = "The children are playing."
You will know it worked when the order is noun, 들, particle. The usual slip at this point is writing 아이가들 or 아이들가. Korean does not allow 들 after the particle in this simple pattern.
Here is the same method on a count. Start with 학생이 왔어요 ("A student came"). If three students came, say 세 학생이 왔어요. Here the number carries the plural, so no 들 is added. The skill is identical. Only the presence of a number changes the decision.
After the pattern comes the harder question: how does 들 differ from the bare noun and from other ways of showing plural?
How Is 들 Different from Similar Forms?
The 들 plural marker makes plural explicit. The bare noun leaves it open. A number or a quantity word gives a plural without 들. The table compares them on the same idea.
| Point | Bare noun | 들 | Number + noun | 여러 / 많은 + noun |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Example | 친구가 와요. | 친구들이 와요. | 세 친구가 와요. | 여러 친구가 와요. |
| English | A friend / friends come. | The friends come. | Three friends come. | Several friends come. |
| Plural meaning | open | clear | exact | clear |
| Is 들 needed? | no | yes (it is the marker) | no | optional |
| Typical use | general statement | a known or visible group | exact count | rough amount |
The first two examples differ by one syllable and by one idea. 친구가 와요 can be one friend or several. 친구들이 와요 can only be several. The number-neutral form is often the most natural when you talk about categories: 저는 고양이를 좋아해요 means "I like cats" in general, with no 들.
For related lessons, see 마다 every particle, which says "every," and 씩 each particle, which says "each." With the comparison clear, the next step is to see where 들 grows beyond nouns.
When Do You Use It, and When Not?
Use 들 when a group is the point of the sentence, and watch for three special cases: pronouns, adverbs and objects. Context decides how natural it sounds.
- Groups of people. 사람들, 아이들, 학생들 and 선생님들 are the most common uses. A teacher speaking to a class can say 학생 여러분 ("dear students"), where 여러분 is already plural.
- Pronouns. 우리 means "we" and is already plural. Speakers still say 우리들 to stress "all of us together." Likewise 저희 ("we," humble) and 너희 ("you," plural) are plural, and 저희들 and 너희들 are used in speech. Learners can use the short forms and recognise the long ones.
- Speech uses on adverbs and 다. 다들 왔어요. (dadeul wasseoyo.) [다들 와써요] = "Everyone came." 빨리들 오세요. (ppallideul oseyo.) = "Please come quickly, everyone." Here 들 does not belong to a noun. It tells the listener that the action applies to every person in the group.
- Objects. With things, Korean often leaves 들 out. 책이 많아요 ("There are many books") sounds better than 책들이 많아요. Add 들 to objects when you want to stress "several, each different."
There are also cases where 들 should not be used. When you say "I like cats" in general, use the bare noun. When you give a precise count, use the number and no 들. When a word like 모든 ("all") already shows the group, 들 is often dropped too.
An honest limit: this lesson covers 들 on nouns, a few pronouns and two speech patterns. It does not cover 들 inside other words, such as 그들 ("they," mostly written) or fixed expressions, and it does not cover how Korean counts people, which is a separate lesson. Before moving on, check the mistakes that cost learners the most points.
What Mistakes Do Learners Make?
Learners most often copy the English "-s" and add 들 everywhere. Five mistakes appear again and again, and each has a quick repair.
- Adding 들 after a number. Learners often assume that every plural needs 들. Actually, a number already shows plural. Write 세 학생이 왔어요, not 세 학생들이 왔어요.
- Adding 들 to every noun in a sentence. 학생들이 책들을 읽어요 is correct but heavy. In most cases, one 들 is enough: 학생들이 책을 읽어요.
- Putting 들 after the particle. Write 친구들이, not 친구이들 or 친구가들. The order is noun, then 들, then the particle.
- Assuming no 들 means one. 사과를 샀어요 does not say "one apple." It leaves the number open. If you want to say "one," add 한 개: 사과를 한 개 샀어요.
- Using 들 for general statements. "Dogs are loyal" in Korean is usually 개는 충성스러워요 with no 들. Use 들 when you point to a particular group, not for a whole category.
Note that 많은 사람들이 is common in real Korean, even though 많은 사람이 is also correct. This is a style choice, not a mistake. A quick self-check: after the noun, is there a number? If so, drop 들. Practice makes this check automatic.
Practice and Answers
Try the four items before you read the answer key. Cover the answers with your hand.
- Choose the form. 세 학생___ 왔어요. (들이 / 이)
- Fix the error. 아이가들 놀아요. Rewrite it so that it means "The children are playing."
- Translate. "I like cats." Use 고양이 and say it in general.
- Write your own. Write one sentence with 들 plus a particle and one sentence with a number and no 들. Say the English meaning of each.

Why does 세 학생이 왔어요 (Three students came) have no 들?
Show answer
The number 세 already shows plural
After a number, the plural is clear, so 들 is left out.
Which sentence correctly says "The children are playing"?
Show answer
아이들이 놀아요.
The order is noun, then 들, then the particle. 들 ends in ㄹ, so the subject particle is 이.
Does 사과를 샀어요 mean "I bought one apple"?
Show answer
No; it leaves the number open (one or several)
Korean nouns are number-neutral. To say "one", add a count: 사과를 한 개 샀어요.
What does 친구들을 만나요 mean?
Show answer
I meet my friends.
친구 + 들 makes the group plural, and 을 marks it as the object.
What does 다들 왔어요 mean?
Show answer
Everyone came.
In speech, 들 after 다 tells the listener that the action applies to every person in the group.
Is 들 required on every plural noun, like English "-s"?
Show answer
No; it is optional when a number or the context shows plural
들 makes plural explicit, but it is a choice of emphasis. With objects in simple sentences it is often left out.
Which of these words is already plural on its own?
Show answer
우리
우리 means "we" and is already plural. Speakers sometimes add 들 (우리들) only to stress "all of us together".
Does 들 change form after a consonant, as in 학생들?
Show answer
No; 들 has one form
Unlike 이/가 or 은/는, 들 stays the same: 친구들, 학생들, 선생님들.
Answer key
- 이. The number 세 already shows plural, so the sentence is 세 학생이 왔어요 and means "Three students came."
- 아이들이 놀아요. The marker 들 goes right after the noun, and the subject particle 이 follows it.
- 저는 고양이를 좋아해요. (jeoneun goyangireul joahaeyo.) The bare noun is natural for a general statement. 고양이들을 좋아해요 is not wrong, but it sounds as if you mean particular cats.
- Answers vary. Check that the first sentence has the order noun, 들, particle, such as 사람들이 많아요 (there are many people). Check that the second has a number and no 들, such as 두 친구가 와요 (two friends come).
One more rule of thumb: if the English noun has "-s" and no number, try 들 first. If a number or "many" is there, try the bare noun first.
Next Lessons after the 들 Plural Marker
After the 들 plural marker, study the particles that talk about amounts, then the polite particle. This lesson teaches one marker and one pattern. It does not teach the full set of auxiliary particles, which is on the hub page.
- Start with 씩 each particle, which says "each" and "at a time."
- Continue with 마다 every particle, which says "every."
- Review only particle 만 and also particle 도.
- Return to Korean auxiliary particles to see every lesson in the set.
The 요 polite particle is also part of this set. With these steps, the 들 plural marker becomes automatic: ask whether the plural matters, check for a number, and put 들 before the particle.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Korean nouns need 들 to be plural?
No. A Korean noun without 들 is number-neutral: 사과를 샀어요 can mean "I bought an apple" or "I bought apples," and context decides. Add 들 only when the plural idea matters and nothing else shows it. Most everyday sentences work well without it.
Where does 들 go when there is also a particle?
Put 들 directly after the noun and before the particle: 친구들이, 친구들을, 친구들은, 친구들에게. Never put it after 이/가 or 을/를. The order is always noun, then 들, then the particle. This keeps the plural marker attached to the noun it describes.
Can I use 들 with numbers?
Usually no. After a number, the plural is already clear, so 세 학생 is the natural form and 세 학생들 sounds odd. Words like 많은 and 여러 are different: 많은 사람들이 is common in real Korean, although 많은 사람이 is also correct and shorter.
Is 우리들 correct, since 우리 already means "we"?
Yes, 우리들 is used, especially in speech, even though 우리 is already plural. It adds a sense of "all of us together." Both forms are fine for learners. Use 우리 as the default and choose 우리들 when you want to stress the group.
Does 들 work on things as well as people?
It can, but it is most natural with people and animals: 아이들, 사람들, 고양이들. With objects, Korean often leaves 들 out: 책이 많아요 sounds better than 책들이 많아요 in a simple sentence. Add 들 to objects only to stress that there are several of them.
