-았/었으면 좋겠다 Grammar in Korean: Meaning and How to Use It

-았/었으면 좋겠다 grammar is the Korean pattern for "I wish" and "I hope that." You attach it to the past stem of a verb or adjective, as in 비가 그쳤으면 좋겠어요 ("I hope the rain stops"). The pattern expresses a wish about something that has not happened yet, and the past-looking ending -았/었 is a signal of wishing, not of time.

What you'll learn

  • Attach -았/었으면 좋겠다 to any verb or adjective and say the polite form from memory.
  • Say what you hope will happen, to other people or in the world.
  • Explain why the past ending -았/었 does not mean the past here.
  • Make negative wishes ("I hope it does not rain").
  • Choose between -았/었으면 좋겠다 and -고 싶다.

Before you start: you should know how to make the past tense (-았어요/-었어요) of a verb, because this pattern borrows the past stem. If past tense is new, read the tenses section of Korean grammar first. Audio plays only when you press a button.

What Does -았/었으면 좋겠다 Grammar Mean?

-았/었으면 좋겠다 grammar means "it would be good if" and, in practice, "I wish" or "I hope that." It names a situation that you would like to be true. The situation has not happened yet, and you do not control it.

Here are the first two examples. The pattern is the same in both.

  • 내일 비가 안 왔으면 좋겠어요. (naeil biga an wasseumyeon jokesseoyo.) [내일 비가 안 와쓰면 조케써요] = "I hope it does not rain tomorrow."
  • 한국어를 잘했으면 좋겠어요. (hangugeoreul jalhaesseumyeon jokesseoyo.) [한구거를 잘해쓰면 조케써요] = "I wish I spoke Korean well."

Look at the pieces. 왔 is the past stem of 오다. -으면 is the conditional ending "if," and 좋겠어요 is 좋다 ("to be good") with the ending -겠, which shows the speaker's feeling or inference. Literally, 왔으면 좋겠어요 is "if it had come, it would be good." The past stem pictures the situation as already finished, so the speaker can look at it and say that it is good. That is why -았/었 here marks a wish and not a past event. First, the formation.

How Do You Form -았/었으면 좋겠다?

-았/었으면 좋겠다 is formed in three steps: make the past stem with -았/었, add -으면, and finish with 좋겠다. The past stem follows vowel harmony. Use -았 after a stem whose last vowel is ㅏ or ㅗ, and -었 after other vowels. 하다 verbs use 했.

Dictionary form Past stem Add -으면 좋겠다 Polite form Meaning
가다 갔 갔으면 좋겠다 갔으면 좋겠어요 I wish (I) went / hope (he) goes
먹다 먹었 먹었으면 좋겠다 먹었으면 좋겠어요 I wish (I) could eat
하다 했 했으면 좋겠다 했으면 좋겠어요 I wish (I) did
크다 컸 컸으면 좋겠다 컸으면 좋겠어요 I wish it were bigger
그치다 그쳤 그쳤으면 좋겠다 그쳤으면 좋겠어요 I hope it stops
이다 이었/였 이었으면 좋겠다 이었으면 좋겠어요 I wish it were

The table shows one rule applied to six words. The next three parts look at the groups of stems one at a time.

Stems Ending in a Vowel

A vowel stem takes the past ending directly and often contracts. 가다 becomes 갔, 오다 becomes 왔, and 보다 becomes 봤. Then add -으면. Because the past stem already ends in ㅆ, -으면 attaches to it as it would to any consonant.

  • 비가 그쳤으면 좋겠어요. (biga geuchyeosseumyeon jokesseoyo.) [비가 그쳐쓰면 조케써요] = "I hope the rain stops."
  • 친구가 일찍 왔으면 좋겠어요. (chinguga iljjik wasseumyeon jokesseoyo.) [친구가 일찍 와쓰면 조케써요] = "I hope my friend comes early."
  • 빨리 집에 갔으면 좋겠어요. (ppalli jibe gasseumyeon jokesseoyo.) [빨리 지베 가쓰면 조케써요] = "I wish I could go home soon."

The ㅆ of the past stem moves to the next syllable in speech, so 왔으면 sounds like [와쓰면]. Write the plain spelling and say the sound. Notice that 좋겠어요 is pronounced [조케써요]. The ㅎ of 좋 and the ㄱ of 겠 combine into a ㅋ sound. Vowel stems are the simplest case. A stem with a final consonant needs the full past syllable.

Stems Ending in a Consonant

A consonant stem adds -었 as a separate syllable, or -았 if the last vowel is ㅏ or ㅗ. 먹다 becomes 먹었, 읽다 becomes 읽었, and 앉다 becomes 앉았. Then add -으면.

  • 동생이 책을 많이 읽었으면 좋겠어요. (dongsaengi chaegeul mani ilgeosseumyeon jokesseoyo.) [동생이 채글 마니 일거쓰면 조케써요] = "I wish my younger sibling would read a lot of books."
  • 시험이 쉬웠으면 좋겠어요. (siheomi swiwosseumyeon jokesseoyo.) [시허미 쉬워쓰면 조케써요] = "I hope the exam is easy."

The first sentence shows the regular case: 읽 + 었 = 읽었. The second uses the adjective 쉽다, whose final ㅂ changes (쉬웠), as the next part explains. Adjectives are fully normal in this pattern. Two more groups need a short note, because learners expect trouble with them.

Irregular Stems and Nouns

Irregular stems change in the past stem the same way they change before any past ending.

  • ㅂ-irregular: 쉽다 becomes 쉬웠, so 쉬웠으면 좋겠어요. 돕다 becomes 도왔, so 도왔으면 좋겠어요.
  • ㄷ-irregular: 듣다 becomes 들었, so 들었으면 좋겠어요.
  • ㅡ-stems: 크다 becomes 컸, so 방이 더 컸으면 좋겠어요 (bangi deo keosseumyeon jokesseoyo) [방이 더 커쓰면 조케써요], "I wish the room were bigger."
  • 하다 adjectives and verbs: 따뜻하다 becomes 따뜻했, so 주말에 날씨가 따뜻했으면 좋겠어요 (jumare nalssiga ttatteutaesseumyeon jokesseoyo) [주마레 날씨가 따뜨태쓰면 조케써요], "I hope the weather is warm on the weekend."

Nouns use 이다. After a consonant, the past stem is 이었 (학생이었으면 좋겠어요, "I wish I were a student"). After a vowel it is 였 (의사였으면 좋겠어요, "I wish I were a doctor"). The negative of 이다 is 아니다, whose past stem is 아니었: 거짓말이 아니었으면 좋겠어요 (geojinmari anieosseumyeon jokesseoyo) [거진마리 아니어쓰면 조케써요], "I hope it is not a lie."

With the formation clear, one full sentence can be built step by step.

Worked Example: Building a Sentence with -았/었으면 좋겠다

-았/었으면 좋겠다 grammar turns a neutral statement into a wish. Follow the steps with the statement "The weather is good tomorrow."

  1. Start with the plain sentence. 내일 날씨가 좋아요. (naeil nalssiga joayo.) = "The weather is good tomorrow." The predicate is the adjective 좋아요.
  2. Find the dictionary form and stem. 좋아요 comes from 좋다. The stem is 좋.
  3. Make the past stem. The last vowel of 좋 is ㅗ, so add -았: 좋았.
  4. Add -으면 좋겠다. 좋았 + 으면 좋겠다 = 좋았으면 좋겠다.
  5. Rebuild the sentence in the polite style. 내일 날씨가 좋았으면 좋겠어요. (naeil nalssiga joasseumyeon jokesseoyo.) [내일 날씨가 조아쓰면 조케써요] = "I hope the weather is good tomorrow."

Sentence

내일날씨가좋았으면좋겠어요

You will know it worked when the subject (날씨가) stayed in place and the predicate gained 으면 좋겠어요. The word 좋 appears twice in this sentence, once as the thing you hope for and once in 좋겠어요, and that is correct. The most common slip at step 3 is skipping the past stem: 좋으면 좋겠어요 is also a real sentence, but it is the plain form of the pattern, which the variations section covers. Each sentence can also appear in several tenses and sentence types, and each has limits.

Which Tenses and Sentence Types Work with -았/었으면 좋겠다?

-았/었으면 좋겠다 works in the present form of 좋겠다, in the negative and in questions. The tense is fixed, because 좋겠다 carries the wish and -았/었 carries the picture of the finished state. The table shows the forms for 가다 in the polite style.

Sentence type Form Meaning
Present wish 갔으면 좋겠어요 I hope (he) goes.
Negative wish 안 갔으면 좋겠어요 I hope (he) does not go.
Negative (long form) 가지 않았으면 좋겠어요 I hope (he) does not go.
Question 갔으면 좋겠어요? Would you like me/them to go?
Formal 갔으면 좋겠습니다 I hope (he) goes (formal).
Casual (banmal) 갔으면 좋겠어 I wish he'd go (to a friend).
Plain form 가면 좋겠어요 It would be good if (he) goes.
Regret 갔으면 좋았을 텐데요 It would have been nice if (he) had gone.

The present wish and the question have the same shape, and rising tone marks a yes/no question. A question with a question word, such as 제가 어떻게 했으면 좋겠어요? (jega eotteoke haesseumyeon jokesseoyo?) [제가 어떠케 해쓰면 조케써요], asks "How would you like me to do it?" and does not need a rising tone.

  • 제가 어떻게 했으면 좋겠어요? = "How would you like me to do it?"
  • 같이 갔으면 좋았을 텐데요. (gachi gasseumyeon joasseul tendeyo.) [가치 가쓰면 조아쓸 텐데요] = "It would have been nice if we had gone together."

The second sentence shows the one place where the past tense really appears. To express regret about something that did not happen, put 좋았을 텐데요 ("it would have been good") at the end. Compare 갔으면 좋겠어요, a wish for the future, with 갔으면 좋았을 텐데요, a regret about the past. The most useful contrast for a learner is with the "want to" pattern.

How Is -았/었으면 좋겠다 Different from -고 싶다?

-았/었으면 좋겠다 expresses a wish about a situation, while -고 싶다 expresses the speaker's own wish to do something. The first can describe the weather, other people or the world. The second always points back at the speaker.

Point -고 싶다 -았/었으면 좋겠다
Core idea I want to do it I wish it would happen
Subject the speaker (or the listener in a question) anyone, or no one (weather, events)
Attached to a verb stem a past stem of a verb or adjective
Example 저는 가고 싶어요. 비가 그쳤으면 좋겠어요.
Meaning of example I want to go. I hope the rain stops.

You cannot use 고 싶다 for the weather: 비가 그치고 싶어요 is wrong, because rain has no wishes. You can use 좋겠다 for your own action, as in 빨리 집에 갔으면 좋겠어요, but then the sentence sounds more like a hope you cannot control than a plain desire. The wish is also gentler.

A second neighbour is -았/었으면 하다, "I'd like it if." It uses the same first half and ends with 하다 instead of 좋겠다. It is milder and more reserved, and speakers choose it in polite requests. A third neighbour is -아/어야겠다, which announces a decision instead of a wish. These contrasts lead to the variations of the pattern itself.

Variations and Edge Cases of -았/었으면 좋겠다

-았/었으면 좋겠다 has four common variations: the plain form without -았/었, a request for the listener, an exclamation of envy and an honorific form. Each one is short, and each appears in real conversation.

  • The plain form -(으)면 좋겠다. Drop -았/었 and keep 으면: 비가 그치면 좋겠어요 (biga geuchimyeon jokesseoyo) [비가 그치면 조케써요]. It means almost the same, and speakers use both. Many speakers feel that the longer form pictures the wish as more complete or more hoped-for, and the plain form sounds slightly more matter-of-fact.
  • A request to the listener. The pattern can say what you would like someone else to do: 조금 더 천천히 말해 줬으면 좋겠어요 ("I'd like you to speak a bit more slowly"). It is polite and indirect, because it states a wish and does not give a command.
  • Short exclamation. 좋겠다! on its own means "You're lucky!" or "I envy you." A friend who says 여행 가서 좋겠다 means "You are lucky to be going on a trip."
  • Honorific. For a respected listener, add -(으)시-: 건강하셨으면 좋겠어요 ("I hope you stay healthy").

This lesson covers the common forms used in daily life. It does not cover the fixed written pattern -기를 바라다 ("hope that"), which has its own page. The mistakes below show where the boundaries cause real errors.

Common Mistakes with -았/었으면 좋겠다

Common mistakes with -았/었으면 좋겠다
Common mistakes with -았/었으면 좋겠다

Learners most often get the tense, the subject or the word 좋겠다 wrong. Four mistakes appear again and again.

  1. Reading -았/었 as the past. Learners translate 비가 그쳤으면 좋겠어요 as "I am glad the rain stopped." It means "I hope the rain stops." The ending -았/었 pictures the wish as complete. It does not describe something that happened.
  2. Using it for a plan. 저는 내일 갔으면 좋겠어요 says what you wish, not what you have decided. To state a plan, use -(으)ㄹ 거예요 or -(으)ㄹ 생각이에요.
  3. Using 고 싶다 for a situation. 비가 그치고 싶어요 is wrong. Rain, weather and events take -았/었으면 좋겠다.
  4. Misspelling 좋겠어요. The sound [조케써요] tempts learners to write 조켓어요. The correct spelling is 좋겠어요, with ㅎ in 좋 and ㅆ in 겠.

A quick check for any wish sentence: Is the situation one that has not happened yet? Is the verb in the past stem with 으면? Does the sentence end in 좋겠다? If all three answers are yes, the sentence is sound.

The practice set below tests these four points directly.

What Should You Learn Next after -았/었으면 좋겠다 Grammar?

After -았/었으면 좋겠다 grammar, learn the softer version of the same wish, then the pattern for your own wants. This lesson teaches wishes about situations and does not cover formal written hopes or plans in depth. Those live on their own pages.

  1. Start with -았/었으면 하다, the milder, more reserved wish.
  2. Compare it with -고 싶다, the speaker's own "want to."
  3. Continue with -아/어야겠다, the pattern for a decision made on the spot.
  4. Return to Desire and Wishes to see every lesson in this set, or to the Intermediate Grammar list for other B1 patterns.

With these steps, -았/었으면 좋겠다 becomes automatic: take the past stem, add 으면 좋겠어요, and keep the wish about something that has not happened.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does -았/었으면 좋겠다 mean?

-았/었으면 좋겠다 means "I wish" or "I hope that." 내일 비가 안 왔으면 좋겠어요 means "I hope it does not rain tomorrow," and 한국어를 잘했으면 좋겠어요 means "I wish I spoke Korean well." The speaker wants a situation to be true, and it has not happened yet.

How do I attach -았/었으면 좋겠다 to a verb or adjective?

Make the past stem with -았/었, then add -으면 좋겠다: 가다 becomes 갔으면 좋겠다, 먹다 becomes 먹었으면 좋겠다, and 크다 becomes 컸으면 좋겠다. It works with verbs and adjectives. With 이다, the stem is 이었 (였 after a vowel). You can also drop -았/었 and say -(으)면 좋겠다.

Can -았/었으면 좋겠다 be used in the past tense?

The -았/었 inside it is not a past marker. To say that you wished something earlier, quote the wish: 비가 그쳤으면 좋겠다고 생각했어요 means "I hoped the rain would stop." To say "it would have been nice if," use 좋았을 텐데요, as in 같이 갔으면 좋았을 텐데요.

Is -았/었으면 좋겠다 used in speech or only in writing?

It is very common in speech. People say 갔으면 좋겠어요 in polite talk and 갔으면 좋겠어 to friends. In formal speech, 갔으면 좋겠습니다 appears. Essays often prefer 바란다 ("I hope"), but wishes in letters, messages and reviews often use 좋겠어요.

What is the most common mistake with -았/었으면 좋겠다?

The most common mistake is reading -았/었 as a past tense, which makes the sentence seem to describe something that already happened. It does not. A second mistake is using it to state a plan. 저는 내일 갔으면 좋겠어요 is a wish, not a plan, so use -(으)ㄹ 거예요 for a plan.

Is -았/었으면 좋겠다 the same as -(으)면 좋겠다?

They are close, and both are common in speech. Many speakers feel that the form with -았/었 sounds more wishful, as if the speaker is picturing the finished state, while -(으)면 좋겠다 sounds a little plainer. In many sentences, both fit: 비가 그치면 좋겠어요 and 비가 그쳤으면 좋겠어요.
