    4. After question 20, read the summary. It shows how many answers were correct in this session and links to the lesson and deck for the questions you missed.

Question order and choice order change every session, so a retake is never the same sequence. Time is not scored. Slow down: reading accuracy matters more than speed at this level.

What Does the Hangul Reading Quiz Cover?

Illustrated practice cards: 커피, keopi, 주스, juseu
Use these examples to practise the rule in this section.

The quiz has 20 questions on reading short words. Six are loanwords from English, which give early wins, and the rest are native or Sino-Korean beginner words. Nine words have a final consonant, so you read closed blocks, not only open ones.

Word type Examples in the quiz What is practised
Loanwords 커피, 주스, 버스, 택시 sounding out unfamiliar spellings
Open blocks 나무, 사과, 어머니 consonant + vowel reading
Closed blocks 한국, 학교, 김치 final consonants in words
Look-alike pairs 곰 and 공, 우유 and 오이 careful reading

The lessons behind the quiz are reading Hangul and, for finals, final consonants in blocks. For passages longer than a word, use the Korean reading practice tool.

How Is the Hangul Reading Quiz Scored?

The quiz gives one point for each of the 20 questions you answer correctly on the first try in the current session. At the end it shows a line such as "You answered 12 of 20 correctly in this session", and the same wording appears in the page data. There is no timer, no streak and no ranking, so you can slow down and say each answer aloud.

The count is not a CEFR level, a TOPIK level or a measure of fluency. It only shows what you recalled today. Your answers and score stay in your browser and disappear when you close the tab, unless you choose to save progress on your own device. Questions give either a meaning choice or a Revised Romanization choice, and the prompt says which. Only standard beginner words are used.

How Do You Read a Hangul Word Step by Step?

Illustrated practice cards: 우유, 사과, sagwa
Use these examples to practise the rule in this section.

Reading Hangul is decoding: you turn each written block into a sound and join the sounds into a word. A reliable method has three steps. First, split the word into blocks. Second, read each block as initial + vowel (+ final). Third, say the blocks in a row without pausing. For 아버지 you split 아 / 버 / 지 and read a, beo, ji, which joins into abeoji.

    Step Action Example: 토마토
    1 Split into blocks 토 / 마 / 토
2 Read each block to, ma, to
    3 Join and say tomato

    Why Start with Loanwords?

Loanwords such as 커피 (keopi, coffee) and 주스 (juseu, juice) copy English sounds into Hangul, so the meaning is a quick check on whether you decoded correctly. The spellings follow Korean sound rules, not English spelling. For instance 버스 is beoseu, because Korean needs a vowel after the final s sound.

    Which Look-Alike Pairs Trap Beginners?

A small change in one letter changes the word. 곰 (bear) and 공 (ball) differ only in the final letter. 우유 (milk) and 오이 (cucumber) differ in vowels. 나무 (tree) and 나라 (country) differ in the second block. Reading each block aloud, rather than guessing from the first block, is the habit that prevents these misses.

Does Revised Romanization Match the Spelling Exactly?

Revised Romanization (RR) is a spelling aid that mostly follows the sound. For example 아버지 is abeoji, where the middle ㅂ is voiced between vowels and written b. Some words change sound in speech, such as 학교, which RR writes hakgyo without marking the tense g. The quiz keeps to words where the difference is small.

    Tips before You Start

    • Read the word aloud once before looking at the options.
    • Loanwords are easy first wins; start there when you feel unsure.
    • Time is not scored, so slow down and check each block.
    • If two options differ by one letter, compare them block by block.

Which Mistakes Does the Hangul Reading Quiz Catch?

Illustrated practice cards: 커피, keopi, 주스, juseu
Use these examples to practise the rule in this section.

    Reading errors are predictable.

    • Choosing by the first syllable only and ignoring the rest of the word.
    • Guessing from English spelling instead of decoding the Hangul blocks.
    • Skipping the silent ㅇ at the start of a block, so 아이 becomes "i".
    • Mixing look-alike finals such as ㅁ and ㅇ in 곰 and 공.

What Should You Study after the Quiz?

Practise recall with the Hangul reading flashcards and read longer text in the Korean reading practice tool. Re-read reading Hangul if you missed several words. The next quiz checks the spelling system itself: the Hangul romanization quiz. The Hangul quiz collection shows the whole sequence.

What Does This Quiz Not Do?

The quiz tests decoding and a few word meanings. It does not test grammar, sentence reading or reading speed, and it does not use words with difficult sound changes. Meanings are given in English only as an aid. All Korean text in the questions and answers was generated and is waiting for review by a Korean reviewer.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Are the words tested on meaning or on sound?

Both, depending on the question. Some ask what a word means, such as 커피, and others ask for its Revised Romanization, such as 아버지. The prompt always says which. Both tasks require decoding the blocks first, so they train the same skill.

    Does it include batchim?

Yes, lightly. Words such as 한국, 학교, 택시 and 곰 have final consonants. The quiz does not ask for sound changes, so you can answer by reading the blocks in order. Final consonants appear in nine of the twenty words. The batchim quiz covers the rules in depth.

What do I do after finishing?

Read the summary, then follow the links for the flashcard deck and the reading lesson. Retake the quiz after a day. When you feel steady, try the reading practice tool, which uses short passages rather than single words. Short daily reading beats one long session.

    Is there audio?

Most questions have an optional replay button that plays the word. Audio never starts by itself. Clips are generated recordings approved by Min-ji Park on 15 October 2026. If a clip is missing, the button is hidden and the question works as text. Hearing the word after you answer is a good way to confirm your reading.

    Is the quiz free?

Yes. The quiz is free, needs no account and runs in your browser on a phone, tablet or computer. Nothing you answer is uploaded to a server. If you choose to save progress, it is stored on your own device only, and you can delete it in the settings at any time.

    Retake the Hangul Reading Quiz

Retake the hangul reading quiz after a week of reading signs, menus or product names in Hangul. Real text trains the same decoding skill, and a retake score shows whether it carried over. The romanization quiz is the next step.
