What Makes This Story Easy or Hard to Read?

The story is easy because each sentence has one idea, and the same few places (학교, 집, 도서관) come back. It is harder in three places: choosing 에 or 에서, the three time numbers and two pronunciation changes.

Feature In the story Note
Time 아홉 시에, 열 시에, 세 시에 Native number + 시 + 에
Destination 학교에, 집에 에 with the verb 가요
Place of action 학교에서, 식당에서, 도서관에서, 집에서 에서 before an action verb
With 친구와 같이 와 after a vowel
Sound changes 끝나요 [끈나요], 같이 [가치] Read the sound, not the spelling

The pattern to notice: sentences 2 and 9 end with 가요 (go) and use 에, while sentences 3, 6, 7 and 10 describe actions and use 에서. The Korean location particles page covers the rule in detail.

Words to Preview before Reading

Word Revised Romanization Meaning Sentence
학생 haksaeng student 1
학교 hakgyo school 2, 3, 6
공부해요 gongbuhaeyo study 3
수업 sueop class, lesson 4, 8
점심 jeomsim lunch, noon 5
식당 sikdang restaurant, cafeteria 6
도서관 doseogwan library 7
읽어요 ilgeoyo read 7
숙제 sukje homework 10
일기 ilgi diary 11, 12
짧아요 jjalbayo is short 12

Romanization here is only a reading aid. Two of these words hide a sound change worth hearing: 읽어요 [일거요] and 숙제 [숙쩨].

Reading the Story in Three Passes

Read the story three times, each pass with a single job.

  1. Pass 1: read silently. Find the three clock times (아홉, 열, 세) and the four places (학교, 식당, 도서관, 집). Do not look anything up.
  2. Pass 2: read with the table. Check only the words you could not guess, then re-read each Korean sentence before checking the English.
  3. Pass 3: read aloud with the narration. Play a sentence, pause and repeat it, then read the story aloud without the audio.

The extensive reading page explains how to build re-reading into a weekly routine.

Pronunciation Notes: 끝나요 and 같이

Two sentences change sound when spoken, and the spelling does not show it. Seeing the change is part of reading.

Written Said Rule Why
끝나요 [끈나요] nasalization The final sound ㄷ becomes ㄴ before ㄴ
같이 [가치] palatalization Final ㅌ + 이 sounds like ㅊ

In 끝나요, the written final ㅌ is said as the final sound ㄷ, then it becomes ㄴ before the ㄴ of 나요: [끈나요]. The rule is covered in Korean nasalization. In 같이, the ㅌ joins the vowel 이 and changes to ㅊ: [가치]. See Korean palatalization.

Worked Example: 에 and 에서 in One Paragraph

Take sentences 2 and 3. Read them side by side: 저는 아침 아홉 시에 학교에 가요. 학교에서 한국어를 공부해요.

  1. Find 시에. 아홉 시에 is a time. The particle 에 marks the point in time.
  2. Find 학교에. The verb 가요 means go, and 학교에 is where the speaker goes. 에 marks the destination.
  3. Find 학교에서. In the next sentence the verb is 공부해요 (study). 학교에서 is where studying happens, so the particle is 에서.

The same word 학교 takes a different particle because the verb changed. A quick test: if the verb is 가다, 오다 or 있다, use 에. If the verb is an action like 공부하다, 먹다 or 읽다, use 에서.

저는 아침 아홉 시에 학교에 가요.

jeoneun achim ahop sie hakgyoe gayo

I go to school at nine in the morning.

학교에서 한국어를 공부해요.

hakgyoeseo hangugeoreul gongbuhaeyo

At school I study Korean.

What Mistakes Do Learners Make with This Story?

Learners often make four mistakes.

Learners often assume Actually Because
학교를 가요 is how to say "go to school" Say 학교에 가요 The destination of 가다 takes 에
집에서 가요 means "go home" Say 집에 가요 에서 is for where an action happens
같이 is said as written It is said [가치] ㅌ + 이 palatalizes to ㅊ
세 시 can be 셋 시 Use 세 시 Numbers shorten before 시

The second row is an easy slip in speech. When you want to say where you are going, think about the destination, not the action. For 집에서 숙제를 해요, the verb is 해요, so 에서 is correct.

Practice and Answer Key

Part A: true or false.

  1. The speaker goes to school at ten.
  2. The speaker studies Korean at school.
  3. The speaker eats lunch alone.
  4. Class ends at three.
  5. The speaker writes a long diary.

Part B: choose 에 or 에서. 학교 ___ 가요. 도서관 ___ 책을 읽어요. 세 시 ___ 끝나요. 집 ___ 숙제를 해요.

Part C: write a three-line diary. Use this frame: 오늘은 날씨가 ( ). 학교에서 ( ). 점심에는 ( ).

Answers
  • Part A: 1 false (아홉 시), 2 true, 3 false (친구와 같이), 4 true, 5 false (짧아요).
  • Part B: 에, 에서, 에, 에서.
  • Part C: for example, 오늘은 날씨가 좋아요. 학교에서 한국어를 공부해요. 점심에는 친구와 밥을 먹어요. Check that each action verb follows a place with 에서.

If Part B went wrong, read the paragraph under the worked example again and look at the verb first.

Where to Go Next

This easy Korean story about a school day covers one student's timetable. It does not teach the past tense, exam vocabulary or subject names beyond 수학. Writing your three-line diary from the frame is the best next step.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Is It 학교에 가요 and Not 학교를 가요?

With the verb 가다 (go), the place you travel to takes 에: 학교에 가요. The object particle 을/를 marks what an action is done to, and a school is not acted on by going. Casual speech sometimes uses 를 with 가다, but 에 is the standard form to learn first.

What Is the Difference between 에 and 에서?

에 marks a point in time or a destination or a place where something exists. 에서 marks where an action happens. 학교에 가요 means I go to school (destination). 학교에서 공부해요 means I study at school (place of action). The story puts both in one paragraph so the contrast is visible.

Why Is 같이 Read as [가치]?

This is palatalization. When a final ㄷ or ㅌ meets the vowel 이 that starts a suffix, it is pronounced like ㅈ or ㅊ. In 같이, the final ㅌ plus 이 gives [가치]. The same rule is why 굳이 is [구지]. The written form stays 같이.

How Do I Say 'with a Friend'?

Say 친구와 or 친구랑. Add 같이 to stress together: 친구와 같이 밥을 먹어요. The particle is 와 after a vowel and 과 after a consonant, so 친구와 and 선생님과. The spoken particle 랑 or 이랑 means the same and is common in casual speech.
