What Makes This Story Easy or Hard to Read?

The story is easy because it follows a clear order and repeats its pattern: a hard task, then a helper. It is harder in four places: the "make someone do" ending, the many -아/어 주다 verbs, old words such as 원님, and a few long sentences with a time clause.

Feature In the story Note
Contrast 착하지만, 가고 싶었지만 -지만, "but"
Make someone do 채우게 했어요, 힘들게 했어요 -게 하다
Do for someone 막아 주었어요, 갈아 주었어요, 골라 주었어요 -아/어 주다
While doing 돌아오다가 -다가, an action interrupted
Names 콩쥐라는 소녀, 팥쥐라는 딸 Name + 라는 + noun
Old words 계모, 원님, 선녀 Recognition words from tales

The pattern to notice: each chore sentence has two actors, the stepmother who gives the order and the girl who must do it. The helper sentence has two actors as well, the animal and the girl. Mark the actors with their particles (이/가 and 에게), and the story becomes easy to follow.

Which New Words Should You Preview?

Preview these words before you read. They carry most of the story and make a small folk tale vocabulary set.

Word Revised Romanization Meaning Sentence
소녀 sonyeo girl 1
돌아가시다 doragasida pass away (honorific) 2
계모 gyemo stepmother 3, 4, 5, 6
힘들다 himdeulda be hard, be tiring 5
깨지다 kkaejida be broken 6, 8
항아리 hangari jar 6, 8
두꺼비 dukkeobi toad 8
소 so ox, cow 9
새 sae bird 9
밭 bat field 9
잔치 janchi feast, party 10, 13
선녀 seonnyeo heavenly fairy 12
꽃신 kkotsin flower shoes 12, 13
원님 wonnim local magistrate 14, 15, 16
행복하게 haengbokage happily 16

Romanization here is only a reading aid. Say the Hangul first. In 착하지만, the ㄱ and ㅎ join into one aspirated sound, so it is said [차카지만] and written chakajiman, as in other predicates. The nouns keep their h, as in 행복 haengbok.

The three helpers. Treat 두꺼비 (toad), 소 (ox) and 새 (bird) as one set. Each one solves a different problem: the toad stops a leak, the ox ploughs a field and the birds sort rice. In the same way, the fairy (선녀) brings clothes and shoes. Add the four to your word list as a group: 두꺼비, 소, 새, 선녀. Hear the fairy's gift line, with 꽃신 said [꼳씬].

A note on names. The title is Kongjwi and Patjwi because 콩 (bean) and 팥 (red bean) are the first syllables of the girls' names, and the second syllable, 쥐, is the same as the word for mouse. The two names end alike, and the tale always says them together.

Read the Story in Three Passes

Read the story three times, each pass with one job.

  1. Pass 1: read silently. Find the girl (콩쥐), the stepmother (계모) and the three helpers. Do not look anything up.
  2. Pass 2: read with the table. Check only the words you could not guess. Then re-read each Korean sentence before checking the English.
  3. Pass 3: read aloud with the narration. Play a sentence, pause and repeat it, then read the story aloud without audio.

End with the last line, which joins two events with -아서/어서.

Use it as a model for rhythm. The extensive reading page shows how to build this kind of re-reading into a routine.

Comprehension Questions

Answer these in English or in short Korean. The answers are in the practice section.

  1. Who is Patjwi?
  2. What did the stepmother make Kongjwi do first?
  3. Which animal stopped the leak?
  4. Who gave Kongjwi clothes and shoes?
  5. How did the magistrate find Kongjwi?

If you can answer all five, you have followed the plot. If one answer escapes you, find the sentence in the table and read it once more.

What Grammar Appears in the Story?

Five patterns carry the story.

1. -지만. 착하지만 means "she was kind, but". The sentence sets two ideas against each other: Kongjwi's character and the stepmother's behaviour.

2. -게 하다. Add -게 to a verb stem and finish with 하다 to say that someone made or let another person do something. The stepmother is the one who gives the order, and the person who must do it is marked with 에게.

Pattern Example Meaning
Verb + -게 하다 물을 채우게 했어요 made (her) fill with water
Adjective + -게 하다 콩쥐를 힘들게 했어요 made things hard for Kongjwi

With an adjective, as in 힘들게 했어요, the pattern means "make someone feel or be in a state". The Korean passive verbs section also covers causatives, the full "make someone do" set.

3. -아/어 주다. This ending says someone does something for another person. 막아 주었어요 means "blocked it for her", 갈아 주었어요 "ploughed it for her" and 골라 주었어요 "sorted it for her". The full past form is 주었어요, and the shorter one is 줬어요.

4. -다가. In 돌아오다가, the action of coming back is cut off by something else: she lost her shoe on the way. Think of it as "while coming back".

5. Name + 라는. 콩쥐라는 소녀 means "a girl called Kongjwi". This pattern introduces a name that the listener does not know yet, so it is common at the start of tales.

Worked Example: the Contrast and Causative Line

Take sentences 1 to 5 and read them in order. Start with the line that matters most for grammar: 콩쥐는 착하지만 계모가 콩쥐를 힘들게 했어요.

  1. Find the contrast. 착하지만 is 착하다 (be kind) plus -지만. The topic is 콩쥐는: "as for Kongjwi, she was kind, but".
  2. Find the new actor. 계모가 is a new subject. The 가 marks that a different person acts now: the stepmother.
  3. Find the object. 콩쥐를 is the person who is affected.
  4. Find the causative. 힘들게 했어요 is 힘들다 (be hard) + -게 + 했어요. It means "made it hard".

Put it together: "Kongjwi was kind, but her stepmother made things hard for her." Now do sentence 6 the same way and compare: the verb 채우다 (fill) takes the same -게 하다 frame, and the person who must fill is marked 콩쥐에게.

콩쥐는 착하지만 계모가 콩쥐를 힘들게 했어요.

kongjwineun chakajiman gyemoga kongjwireul himdeulge haesseoyo

Kongjwi was kind, but the stepmother made things hard for her.

계모는 콩쥐에게 깨진 항아리에 물을 채우게 했어요.

gyemoneun kongjwiege kkaejin hangarie mureul chaeuge haesseoyo

The stepmother made Kongjwi fill a broken jar with water.

두꺼비가 깨진 항아리를 막아 주었어요.

dukkeobiga kkaejin hangarireul maga jueosseoyo

A toad blocked the broken jar for her.

What Mistakes Do Learners Make Here?

Learners often make four mistakes.

Learners often assume Actually Because
채우게 했어요 means "filled" It means "made (her) fill" -게 하다 adds a second actor who gives the order
막아 주었어요 means "blocked" only It means "blocked for her" -아/어 주다 adds the idea of doing a favour
착하지만 is said as written It is said [차카지만] ㄱ + ㅎ joins into one aspirated sound
꽃신 is said [꽃신] It is said [꼳씬] ㅊ is said as ㄷ at the end, and ㅅ becomes tense

A fifth trap is the subject marker in sentence 5. 콩쥐는 sets the topic, and 계모가 gives a new actor. If you read both as the same person, the contrast breaks. Another trap is treating the tale as a single fixed text: details change between tellings, and this version is only one short retelling.

Practice and Answer Key

Part A: true or false.

  1. Patjwi is the stepmother's daughter.
  2. A bird stopped the leak in the jar.
  3. The fairy came from heaven.
  4. Kongjwi went to the feast in her old clothes.
  5. Kongjwi married the magistrate.

Part B: make a sentence with -게 하다. Turn 물을 채워요 (fill with water) into "made her fill with water". Use 계모가 and 콩쥐에게.

Part C: write three sentences. Retell the story in your own words. Use one 착하지만 sentence, one -게 하다 sentence and one -아/어 주다 sentence.

Where to Go Next

Read the next tale, Heungbu and Nolbu Story, another classic with a kind character and a harsh relative. For more reading at your level, see the full set of Korean short stories for beginners. For the background to tales like this one, see Korean culture, and for the sound change in 착하지만, read the Korean aspiration rule.

This Kongjwi and Patjwi story is one short retelling. It does not teach every folk tale word, the older forms that printed versions use or the full set of causative patterns. A good next step is to retell the tale aloud in five sentences, using -게 하다 once.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is 계모?

계모 means a stepmother, the woman a father marries after the child's own mother has died or left. It is the word used in the dictionary and in tales. In everyday speech people often say 새엄마, "new mom", which sounds gentler. In stories, 계모 often carries a harsh, cold feeling.

How Does -게 하다 Work?

-게 하다 means "make or let someone do something". Add -게 to a verb stem, then 하다 in the right tense. 채우게 했어요 is "made her fill". With an adjective, as in 힘들게 했어요, it means "made it hard for her". The person who is made to do something is marked with 에게 or 를.

What Does 원님 Mean?

원님 is the old title for a local magistrate, an official who ruled a district in the Joseon period. The suffix 님 shows respect. You will see 원님 in tales and historical dramas, but not in modern daily life. It is a recognition word for reading, not one to use in speech.

Is the Story the Same as Cinderella?

No, but they share a pattern. Both have a kind girl, a harsh stepmother, a stepsister, help from outside, a lost shoe and a marriage. In Kongjwi, the helpers are animals and a heavenly fairy, the shoe is a 꽃신, and the husband is a local official, not a prince. Folklorists group tales like these together as Cinderella-type stories.
