Key Facts
- Hangul: 앞; Revised Romanization: ap
- Part of speech: noun (location word)
- Origin: native Korean
- Register: neutral; as a place noun it takes 에 for position
Front in Korean: What Does 앞 Mean?
앞 has three senses: front, in front of, and ahead. The register is neutral and works in both speech and writing. As a place noun it takes 에 to state a position.
How Do You Pronounce 앞?
One syllable, ap. On its own the final ㅍ is an unreleased p: close the lips and stop. When a particle follows, the ㅍ moves across and is released, so 앞에 sounds like a-pe.
Example Sentences with 앞
학교 앞에서 만나요.
Hakgyo apeseo mannayo.
Let's meet in front of the school.
학교 앞 is in front of the school. Meeting is an action, so the place takes 에서, giving 앞에서.
제 앞에 앉으세요.
Je ape anjeuseyo.
Please sit in front of me.
The phrase 제 앞에 uses 에 for position: sit in front of me. 앉으세요 is a polite instruction.
앞으로 쭉 가세요.
Apeuro jjuk gaseyo.
Please go straight ahead.
앞으로 gives direction, "forward". 쭉 adds the sense of straight along.
Common Phrases and Collocations
앞에 is "in front of", 앞으로 is "from now on" or "forward", and 앞문 is a front door.
| Korean | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 앞에 | in front of |
| 앞으로 | from now on / forward |
| 앞문 | front door |
The Mistake to Avoid
Learners use 앞에 and 앞에서 interchangeably.
Wrong: 학교 앞에 만나요 for "Let's meet in front of the school".
Correct: 학교 앞에서 만나요. Meeting is an action, so it takes 에서. Use 앞에 for where something is or where you sit, as in 제 앞에 앉으세요.
앞 Compared with Similar Words
뒤 is the exact opposite, behind. 전 is "before" in time, whereas 앞 is spatial, though 앞으로 can also point to the future. The particle tells you which job 앞 is doing: 앞에 is a position and 앞으로 is a movement or a time ahead.
| Word | Meaning | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| 앞 | front | This page's word |
| 뒤 | behind | 뒤 is the opposite. |
| 전 | before (time) | 전 is before in time, while 앞 is spatial front, though 앞 can also mean the future. |
Where Does the Word Come From?
앞 is a native Korean word, so it has no hanja. Its time counterpart 전 is Sino-Korean (前).
Meeting outside a Café
Two friends are finding each other before lunch. The café is their shared reference point.
Jisu
지금 어디예요?
Jigeum eodiyeyo?
Where are you now?
Minho
카페 앞에 있어요.
Kape ape isseoyo.
I’m in front of the café.
Jisu
저도 거의 다 왔어요. 카페 앞에서 만나요.
Jeodo geoui da wasseoyo. Kape apeseo mannayo.
I’m almost there too. Let’s meet in front of the café.
Minho
네, 여기서 기다릴게요.
Ne, yeogiseo gidarilgeyo.
Okay, I’ll wait here.
The same place takes two different particles. 앞에 있어요 tells your friend where you are; 앞에서 만나요 proposes an action there. Neither phrase tells the listener which café you mean. Name the café first if several are nearby.
How Do You Choose the Reference Point?
Put the landmark before 앞: 카페 앞 means “the front of the café” or “in front of the café”. English puts “in front of” first, so reversing the order is an easy mistake. Korean keeps the landmark and its position together before adding a particle.
앞 does not automatically mean “the entrance”. A building may have several doors, and someone waiting near its front wall is still in front of it. If you need the actual doorway, 입구, “entrance”, is more precise. At a station or a large shopping centre, agreeing on an entrance avoids searching the entire frontage.
A person can also be the reference point. 제 앞 means the space in front of me; it can describe the person ahead of me in a queue or the seat directly in front of mine. The physical situation supplies the arrangement. 앞 alone does not say that two people are facing each other.
Phrases beyond a Physical Location
눈앞 literally means “before the eyes”. It can describe something directly in view. In a meeting or a classroom, 사람들 앞에서 means “in front of people”, often in the sense of speaking or performing before an audience. The people are the reference point, and 에서 marks where that action takes place.
앞으로 잘 부탁드립니다 is a formal greeting when beginning a working relationship. 앞으로 points to the time ahead; the whole expression asks for the other person’s goodwill and cooperation. It often appears in an introductory email or at a first team meeting. Translating 앞으로 as “forward” would miss that social meaning.
In directions, however, 앞으로 still describes physical movement. Listen to the rest of the sentence: a movement instruction points through space, while a promise or introduction usually points toward the future.
Position Words to Learn beside 앞
| Korean | Meaning | Useful note |

| 옆 | beside / side | Use for something alongside the landmark. |
| 건너편 | opposite side | Useful for a café across the street. |
