What Is on Each Page?

Page 1 is a reference chart and page 2 is a recall sheet. Both have three bands in the same order: consonants and their names, vowels and their romanization, and the syllable matrix.

Band 1: consonants and names. Ten columns by two rows hold the 14 basic consonants and the 5 double consonants, with one empty cell. Each cell shows the letter, its Korean name and its Revised Romanization.

Band 2: vowels and romanization. Eleven columns by two rows hold the 10 basic vowels and the 11 compound vowels. Each cell shows the letter and its Revised Romanization.

Band 3: syllable matrix. A grid of 14 rows and 10 columns shows what happens when each basic consonant meets each basic vowel. Row ㄱ reads 가 갸 거 겨 고 교 구 규 그 기, and every other row follows the same pattern.

Page 2: cover-and-recall. The same bands are printed with the names and romanization left blank. You write them from memory and then check against page 1.

The text below repeats the chart, so you can read every cell before you print.

Consonants

Letter Name Revised Romanization
ㄱ 기역 g
ㄴ 니은 n
ㄷ 디귿 d
ㄹ 리을 r
ㅁ 미음 m
ㅂ 비읍 b

ㅈ 지읒 j
ㅊ 치읓 ch
ㅋ 키읔 k

The romanization in this table is the value at the start of a syllable. At the end of a syllable several letters change, for example ㄱ to k, ㄷ to t and ㄹ to l.

The 5 double consonants are written as two copies of a basic consonant.

Letter Name Revised Romanization
ㄲ 쌍기역 kk

Romanization here follows the Revised Romanization of Korean, issued by South Korea's Ministry of Culture and Tourism in 2000 and maintained by the National Institute of Korean Language (국립국어원). It is a guide for readers who are still learning the letters, not a substitute for the Hangul. Some letters change sound at the end of a syllable or between sounds, so ㄱ appears as g in the chart but is pronounced k at the end of 박.

With the contents clear, the next section explains how to use the chart.

How Do I Use This Sheet?

Learner using a printable Hangul reference and recall routine.
Use the reference to check your independent practice.

Pin the chart near your desk and use it in short daily rounds, rather than studying it once. A chart works as a reference when you read and as a drill when you cover it. Use this routine:

  1. Pin page 1 where you will see it every day, at eye level.
  2. Read one row of the matrix aloud, for example 가 갸 거 겨 고 교 구 규 그 기.
  3. Cover the romanization column with a ruler, and say each letter before you check.
  4. Once a week, do page 2: write the names and romanization from memory.
  5. Mark the cells you missed, and read those cells aloud first the next day.

You will know it is working when you can say a whole matrix row without looking at the romanization. The chart is the paper version of the interactive hangul chart, which adds audio for every letter. The same letters also appear in the korean alphabet flashcards.

What Is the Answer Key For?

Page 1 is the answer key for page 2. After you fill in the recall sheet, compare your names and romanization letter by letter. Pay attention to the double consonants and to compound vowels such as ㅙ and ㅞ, which learners often mix up. Fold page 1 away while you write page 2.

The chart has small cells, so print quality matters. Use these settings:

  • Paper: A4 (210 by 297 mm) or US Letter (8.5 by 11 inches). Choose the matching file.
  • Scale: 100 percent, with "fit to page" turned off. The matrix cells are only 14 mm by 8 mm.
  • Margins: 12 mm on every side.
  • Colour: black and white is enough. The chart prints in one ink colour, but a colour print is easier to scan.

For a poster, print page 1 on the best paper you have, and laminate it if you plan to leave it on the wall. Print page 2 on ordinary paper.

Mistakes to Watch For

A chart is easy to misuse, because looking at it feels like learning.

  • Relying on romanization. The romanization is an aid. Read the Hangul first, and use the romanization only to check. If you only read the English letters, you will not learn the Korean ones.
  • Not checking stroke order. The chart shows shapes, not strokes. For the order of the lines, see hangul stroke order.
  • Skipping names. Names such as 기역 are used to spell words aloud, and learning them early helps later. Cover the name column once a week.
  • Reading ㅇ as a sound. At the start of a block, ㅇ is silent. In the matrix, the row for ㅇ reads 아 야 어 여 오 요 우 유 으 이.

What Should I Practice Next?

After the chart, practise one part at a time. The korean alphabet flashcards drill the same letters on screen, and the hangul alphabet quiz tests whether you can pick the right letter by sound. For keyboard use, continue with the korean keyboard layout printable. All printables are collected on the korean printables page.

This chart covers the 14 basic consonants and 10 basic vowels in the matrix, and lists the double consonants and compound vowels separately. It does not show final consonants (batchim), pronunciation changes between sounds, or stroke order. Pinned above a desk, the hangul table pdf turns the whole alphabet into something you can glance at every day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it come in A4 and Letter sizes?

The download includes both A4 (210 by 297 mm) and US Letter (8.5 by 11 inches) files with the same layout. Choose the file that matches your printer, and print at 100 percent scale. If your printer shrinks the page to fit, the 14 mm by 8 mm matrix cells become very small to read.

Can I enlarge the chart?

In the PDF you can zoom as far as you like, because the text is vector type and stays sharp. On paper, you can print page 1 on A3 or enlarge it on a photocopier for a wall poster. For a desk chart, A4 or Letter at 100 percent is the intended size.

Why does the matrix use only 14 consonants and 10 vowels?

The matrix pairs the 14 basic consonants with the 10 basic vowels because those 140 blocks cover the core reading patterns a beginner needs first. Adding the 5 double consonants and 11 compound vowels would make 399 blocks, too many for one page. Those letters appear in their own bands with names and romanization.

Do I need a colour printer?

The chart is designed to work in black and white, so any printer will do. All information is carried by the letters and the grid, not by colour. If you print in colour, you can use highlighters to mark the cells you miss, which is a good way to track progress by hand.
