Korean Internet Punctuation: Chat Marks Explained

Korean internet punctuation is the set of letters and marks that Koreans type to show tone in chat, such as ㅋㅋ for laughter, ㅠㅠ for crying and a tilde (~) for a soft ending. These forms are not part of the official punctuation rules. This lesson shows what each one means, how to type it and when to avoid it.

What you will learn

  • Read ㅋㅋ, ㅎㅎ, ㅠㅠ, ㅡㅡ, ^^ and the tilde in a chat line.
  • Hear how a tilde or a final period changes the tone of one sentence.
  • Type the chat letters on a Korean keyboard.
  • Decide which of ten chat lines suit a friend and which suit a teacher.

Before you start: read the lessons on Korean punctuation marks and Korean quotation marks. Time: about 25 minutes.

What Is Korean Internet Punctuation?

Korean internet punctuation is a loose system of marks that grew up in text messages, game chat and comment sections. It exists because typed text has no voice. A Korean sentence in chat can be short and plain, so writers add a laugh letter, a tilde or a face to show how they mean it.

Two ideas explain most of it. First, many chat marks are Hangul letters used as pictures: ㅠㅠ looks like eyes with tears, and ㅋㅋ stands for the sound of a laugh. Second, the marks change the tone, not the meaning. 고마워요 and 고마워요~ both mean "thanks", but the second sounds warmer.

Here is the polite word 고마워요 ("thank you", from 고맙다) that these marks usually follow.

고마워요.

gomawoyo.

Thank you.

Chat marks are informal. They suit people who are close, and they can look rude or careless in other settings. The rest of the lesson shows how to read them and when to leave them out.

Why Do English Speakers Struggle with Chat Marks?

English speakers struggle because the Korean marks look familiar but follow different habits. Three things catch learners.

  1. Letters used as pictures. Learners read ㅋㅋ as two letters, not as laughter. They need to see ㅋ as the sound 크.
  2. Tone carried by small marks. In English, tone often comes from emoji or words like "lol". Korean chat uses letters, the tilde and the final period for the same job.
  3. Politeness with the same words. A sentence in the polite -요 style can still be warm or cold depending on its last mark.

Next comes the list of marks that appear most often.

What Are the Main Chat Marks?

The main chat marks are laugh letters, crying letters, faces and punctuation. The table shows each mark, what it shows and the keys that type it on a standard 2-beolsik keyboard (the letter keys are named by their English labels). The layout is in the lesson on the 2-beolsik keyboard layout.

Mark Reads as What it shows Keys (2-beolsik)
ㅋㅋ 크크 (keukeu) laughter, amusement Z Z
ㅎㅎ 히히 (hihi), 하하 (haha) a soft, friendly laugh G G
ㅠㅠ not spoken crying, sadness, tiredness B B
ㅜㅜ not spoken a smaller version of ㅠㅠ N N
ㅡㅡ not spoken a flat face: annoyed or unimpressed M M
^^ not spoken a smile Shift + 6, twice
;; not spoken an awkward or nervous feeling the semicolon key, twice
~ not spoken softens or lengthens the ending Shift + the key left of 1
... a pause hesitation or trailing off the period key, three times
?? or !! the same as ? or ! stronger doubt or feeling the matching key, twice

The two laugh letters differ in feeling. ㅋㅋ is the common, light laugh, and ㅎㅎ is gentler and often sounds friendly or shy. A pair such as ㅠㅠ shows that the writer is crying or tired, or sometimes moved.

Read aloud, a typed laugh becomes 크크크. You do not say 키읔 키읔 (kieuk kieuk), the name of the letter. Listen to how the typed ㅋㅋㅋ is said, as a sentence beginning.

The second part of that line is 진짜? (jinjja, "really?"), a yes/no question, so the voice rises at the end.

Letters can also stand in for whole words. Writers use the first consonants of a word, called an initial-letter form (초성체, choseongche). The following are common and are used with friends only.

Shortcut From Meaning
ㅇㅇ 응 (eung) yes
ㄴㄴ 노노 (nono) no, no
ㅇㅋ 오케이 (okei) OK
ㄱㅅ 감사 (gamsa) thanks
ㅈㅅ 죄송 (joesong) sorry

These shortcuts are never read aloud as letters and never used in formal writing. Spoken replies use the full words, such as 응, 알았어. Learn the full words first.

How Does the Number of ㅋ Change the Meaning?

The number of ㅋ shows how strong the laughter is. A few letters mean an ordinary laugh, and a long string means a loud one. The scale below is a tendency in friendly chat, not a fixed code.

What is typed Strength Typical feeling
ㅋ very light dry, polite, or a little flat
ㅋㅋ light something is amusing
ㅋㅋㅋ medium a real laugh
ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ strong very funny

A single ㅋ at the end of a line often reads as a dry or half-hearted laugh, and sometimes as sarcasm. Two or three letters are the safest. Very long strings are for close friends and funny moments.

The same idea works for ㅎ: ㅎㅎ is gentle and ㅎㅎㅎㅎ is more cheerful. Writers rarely repeat ㅠ more than two or three times, and the stronger the feeling, the longer the string.

How Does the Tilde Change Tone?

The tilde () softens a sentence and makes the ending sound lighter, as if the last syllable were stretched. It does not change the meaning. The official use of the tilde for ranges, such as 1020, is a different job covered in the lesson on punctuation marks.

Written Tone Fits
고마워요. plain, a little firm polite, neutral
고마워요~ warm, soft friends, familiar coworkers
고마워요ㅎㅎ warm and cheerful friends
감사합니다. formal and respectful teachers, bosses, strangers

Compare 알겠어요. ("Got it.") with 알겠어요~. The tilde line sounds friendly, as if the writer is smiling. A tilde is always about tone. It is never needed for the grammar.

알겠어요.

algesseoyo.

Got it. (I understand.)

A caution: long strings such as ~~~ or ~~~~ are very casual. Use one tilde at most when you are learning.

Should You End Chat Lines with a Period?

Between friends, most chat lines end with no mark at all, so a final period can feel firm, cool or serious. Toward a teacher, a boss or a customer, the situation is reversed: a period is normal, and a line without one can look rushed. Treat this as a tendency in tone, not a rule of correctness.

Line Between friends Toward a teacher
알겠어요 normal, relaxed a little casual
알겠어요. firm or slightly cool normal and polite
알겠어요~ friendly too casual
알겠습니다. stiff correct and polite

The pair 알겠어요 and 알겠습니다 differs in speech level, not in the mark. 알겠습니다 is the formal polite style, and the audio below says the formal form. Its Revised Romanization is algetseumnida.

Politeness and punctuation work together. The mark adds a mood, and the ending sets the level. If you are unsure, choose the formal ending and a final period.

When Should You Avoid Chat Style?

Avoid chat marks whenever the reader is not a close friend or the text is formal. The table sorts four settings, and the safe choice for each.

Setting Chat marks? Safe choice
Close friend, group chat yes any of the marks above
Classmate or coworker you know a little one ㅎㅎ or one ~
Teacher, professor, boss, a customer no full sentences with a period and the polite style
Exam, essay, formal email never standard punctuation and standard spacing

In an exam such as TOPIK writing, answers are expected to follow the standard rules, so chat marks and chat spacing are out of place. See Korean emails and letters for formal messages. For real chat language, read KakaoTalk messages and the Korean texting phrases.

Notice that people also loosen spacing in chat, for example by joining words that the rules would separate. Do not copy this in writing that is marked. The Korean spacing rules lessons cover the formal standard.

Worked Example: 고마워요~

You will choose the right way to say thank you to three different people. This takes four steps.

  1. Start with the neutral line. 고마워요. is polite and plain.
  2. Check the reader. A close friend reads the tilde as warmth. A teacher expects more respect.
  3. Pick the mark. For a friend: 고마워요~ or 고마워요ㅎㅎ. For a coworker you know: 고마워요. For a teacher: 감사합니다.
  4. Remember that speech has no tilde. When you say the line, the warmth comes from a lengthened, lighter ending.

Checkpoint: you have it right when your choice changes with the reader, and not with the mood alone.

The next section lists the mistakes that learners make when they start to chat.

What Mistakes Do Learners Make with Chat Marks?

Learners often assume that chat marks are universal. They are not, and four habits cause problems.

  1. Saying the letter names. ㅋㅋ is read 크크, not 키읔 키읔. Typed ㅠㅠ is not spoken.
  2. Using ㅋㅋ after every line. A laugh after sad news or a serious request sounds mocking.
  3. Copying slang to a teacher. ㅇㅋ or ㄱㅅ to a teacher is too casual. Use 알겠습니다 and 감사합니다.
  4. Believing chat spacing is correct. Missing spaces are a habit of speed and not a rule.

Where to Go Next

You can now read the tone marks of Korean chat and choose the right ones for each reader. The next step is to apply them in real messages: start with Korean emails and letters for the formal side, and the Korean punctuation overview for the other marks. To read a real chat, try KakaoTalk messages.

What this lesson does not cover. It does not list slang words, emoji sets or stickers, and it makes no claim about how often any mark is used. It describes tendencies for tone. The official rules come from the National Institute of Korean Language (국립국어원), and these forms are outside them.

In short, Korean internet punctuation is made of laugh letters, crying letters, faces, the tilde and the final period, and the right choice depends on who will read the line.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ㅋㅋ a Letter or Laughter in Chat?

Both. ㅋ is a Hangul letter that stands for the sound of the laugh 크크 (keukeu), and in chat the letter is repeated to mean laughter. It is read aloud as 크크크. The number of letters shows the strength: ㅋ is dry, ㅋㅋ is ordinary, and a long string means a loud laugh.

Why Does a Period Sound Cold in Korean Chat?

In quick friend chat, most lines have no final mark, so a period can read as a full stop on the conversation, firm or slightly distant. This is a tendency, not a rule. Toward a teacher or a boss, a period is normal and expected, and leaving it out can look careless.

What Does ㅠㅠ Mean?

ㅠㅠ is a picture of two eyes with tears running down, so it shows crying, sadness, tiredness or being touched. ㅜㅜ is a smaller version. Both are typed with letters and are not spoken aloud. They suit friends, and they are too casual for a teacher or a formal message.

Can I Use ㅋㅋ in an Email?

Not in a formal or first email. An email to a teacher, a professor, a company or an office is written in full sentences with a period and the polite or formal style. Chat laughter is fine in a message to a friend, in an app chat, or when the other person uses it first.

Do Koreans Leave out Spaces in Chat?

Often, yes. In fast chat, many people skip spaces that the official rules require, because the meaning stays clear. The rules still apply in exams, essays and formal writing, so learn them from the spacing lessons and treat chat as an exception, not a model.
