-기 전에 Grammar in Korean: Meaning and How to Use It

-기 전에 grammar is the Korean connector pattern for "before doing something". Add -기 전에 to a verb stem, as in 자기 전에 이를 닦아요 ("I brush my teeth before I sleep"). The stem never changes, and the tense goes only on the last verb of the sentence.

Estimated Time: 15 min
An adult brushes their teeth beside a bedroom in a Seoul apartment.

Before you start: you should know how to make a simple polite sentence ending in -아요/-어요, and how to find a verb stem (the dictionary form without its final 다, such as 자 in 자다). Estimated time: 15 minutes. If you want the opposite pattern first, see -(으)ㄴ 후에, which means "after".

What Does -기 전에 Grammar Mean?

An adult brushes their teeth, then sleeps; an arrow shows the order.
An adult brushes their teeth, then sleeps; an arrow shows the order.

-기 전에 grammar means "before doing something". It tells the listener that the action in the first clause happens earlier than the action in the main clause. Read the sentence from the end: the final verb is the main event, and the -기 전에 clause gives its time. In 자기 전에 이를 닦아요, the final verb 닦아요 ("brush") is the main event, and 자기 전에 ("before sleeping") says when.

The pattern has three parts. The first is the verb stem, such as 자. The second is -기, an ending that turns a verb into a noun-like word (grammar books call it a nominalizing ending, 명사형 어미). The third is 전에: 전 is a noun meaning "before", and 에 is the particle that marks a point in time. Together they mean "at the time before doing". Learner grammars treat the whole pattern as a connector, a form that links one clause to the next.

자기 전에 이를 닦아요.

jagi jeone ireul dakkayo.

I brush my teeth before I sleep.

밥을 먹기 전에 손을 씻으세요.

babeul meokgi jeone soneul ssiseuseyo.

Please wash your hands before eating.

한국에 오기 전에 한국어를 배웠어요.

hanguge ogi jeone hangugeoreul baewosseoyo.

I learned Korean before I came to Korea.

Notice that the first clause in each example has no tense. The second example is a polite command, and the third is in the past, yet 먹기 and 오기 look the same in both. The next section shows how to build the form on every kind of verb.

How Do You Form -기 전에?

You form -기 전에 by adding it to the verb stem, with nothing in between and no change to the stem. There is only one version of the ending, so you never have to choose between -기 and -으기.

Verb Dictionary form With -기 전에 Revised Romanization

Revised Romanization (RR, the official Latin spelling) is only an aid. It follows the spelling and does not show the tense sound, so 먹기 is written meokgi even though it is said [먹끼].

Stems Ending in a Vowel

Add -기 전에 straight after the vowel and say it as written: 가기 전에, 자기 전에, 보기 전에, 배우기 전에. There is no sound change, because the ㄱ comes right after a vowel.

Stems Ending in a Consonant

Add -기 전에 after the final consonant. The spelling stays, but the sound changes. A tense consonant is a sharper, tighter sound, written ㄲ, ㄸ, ㅃ, ㅆ or ㅉ when it has its own letter. The Standard Pronunciation Rules (표준 발음법, Articles 11 and 23) say that after the final sounds ㄱ, ㄷ and ㅂ, the next ㄱ becomes tense. So the ㄱ of -기 becomes ㄲ in sound:

  • 먹기 [먹끼], with final ㄱ.
  • 읽기 [일끼], where the final cluster ㄺ is said as ㄹ and the ㄱ of -기 turns tense.
  • 씻기 [씯끼], where final ㅅ is said as ㄷ.
  • 돕기 [돕끼], with final ㅂ.

The word 전에 then links to the vowel in 에, so it is said [저네], not [전에]. After ㄹ, nothing becomes tense: 놀기 is said as written.

Irregular Stems and Nouns

Irregular verbs do not change before -기. They change their stem only before endings that start with a vowel (and, for ㄹ stems, before some consonants). The ending -기 starts with the consonant ㄱ, so 듣다 stays 듣기 (not 들기), 돕다 stays 돕기 (not 도우기), and 모르다 stays 모르기.

You can also put 전에 after a noun. Then there is no -기 at all. A time word plus 전에 means "ago": 한 시간 전에 is "an hour ago". An event noun plus 전에 means "before the event": 식사 전에 is "before the meal", and 시험 전에 is "before the exam".

식사 전에 손을 씻어요.

siksa jeone soneul ssiseoyo.

I wash my hands before meals.

한 시간 전에 도착했어요.

han sigan jeone dochakaesseoyo.

I arrived an hour ago.

Next, here is one full sentence built step by step.

Worked Example: Building a Sentence with -기 전에

An adult reads a book, then sleeps; an arrow shows reading comes first.
An adult reads a book, then sleeps; an arrow shows reading comes first.

You build the sentence in five steps, starting from the two actions you want to join. This example makes "I read a book before I sleep".

  1. Write both actions with their dictionary verbs. 책을 읽다 and 자다.
  2. Decide which action comes first. Reading comes first, so it is the main verb. Sleeping comes second, so it becomes the -기 전에 clause.
  3. Find the stem of the second action. Remove 다 from 자다. The stem is 자.
  4. Add -기 전에. 자 + 기 전에 = 자기 전에.
  5. Give the main verb its tense and politeness. 읽다 becomes the polite present 읽어요. Put the clause first: 자기 전에 책을 읽어요.

Checkpoint. You have it when you can change the sentence to the past without touching 자기 전에. The answer is 자기 전에 책을 읽었어요 [자기 저네 채글 일거써요]. Only the final verb changes. The past tense itself is explained in past tense -았/었-.

The sentence built here is a statement about a habit. The next section shows which tenses and sentence types can follow -기 전에.

Which Tenses and Sentence Types Work with -기 전에?

An adult calls before leaving a Seoul apartment with a travel bag.
An adult calls before leaving a Seoul apartment with a travel bag.

The main verb can have any tense or sentence type, and the verb in front of 전에 stays bare. The ending -기 carries no tense, so the time is read from the final verb. This is the one rule that learners must hold on to.

Feature Where it goes Example
Present habit final verb 자기 전에 이를 닦아요.
Past final verb 어제는 자기 전에 이를 닦았어요.
Future or promise final verb 출발하기 전에 전화할게요. = "I will call before I leave."
Command final verb 먹기 전에 손을 씻으세요.
Question with a question word final verb 자기 전에 보통 뭐 해요? = "What do you usually do before bed?"
Honorific -(으)시- on the first verb too, if the subject is respected 주무시기 전에 약을 드세요.
Tense in the first clause not allowed 먹었기 전에 is wrong

Two details help in speech. A question that uses a question word such as 뭐 ("what") does not end with a sharp rise. The question word carries the stress, and the end often falls or rises and falls. A yes/no question usually ends with a rise: 자기 전에 샤워해요? means "Do you shower before bed?". The honorific -(으)시- is the ending that shows respect for the subject. See honorific -(으)시- for the ending itself.

The two clauses can have different subjects. 아이가 자기 전에 엄마가 책을 읽어 줘요 means "Before the child sleeps, the mother reads a book to him or her". Next comes the pattern that learners confuse with -기 전에 most often.

How Is -기 전에 Different from -(으)ㄴ 후에?

Two rows contrast washing hands before eating and washing hands after eating.
Two rows contrast washing hands before eating and washing hands after eating.

-기 전에 puts the first-mentioned action later in time, while -(으)ㄴ 후에 puts it earlier. They are mirror images of each other. In 먹기 전에 손을 씻어요, washing comes first and eating second. In 먹은 후에 손을 씻어요, eating comes first and washing second. The lesson on -(으)ㄴ 후에 gives the full rules for "after".

Use -기 전에 when the clause you name is the later event; use -(으)ㄴ 후에 when it is the earlier event.

The other neighbour is -(으)ㄹ 때, which means "when" or "at the time of". It points to a time, not to an order. 자기 전에 음악을 들어요 means "I listen to music before sleeping", so the music ends before sleep starts. 잘 때 음악을 들어요 means "I listen to music when I sleep", so the music plays during sleep. The lesson on -(으)ㄹ 때 explains that pattern.

A quick test: if the English says "before" and the clause names the later event, -기 전에 is right. If the English says "while" or "when", use -(으)ㄹ 때 or a "while" pattern instead. Next are the useful variations of the pattern.

Variations and Edge Cases of -기 전에

An adult reads an instruction booklet before operating a rice cooker.
An adult reads an instruction booklet before operating a rice cooker.

-기 전에 has four useful variations: 전에 on its own, the noun form, a shorter written form and a formal alternative.

  • 전에 alone. 전에 한국에 갔어요 means "I went to Korea before (at an earlier time)". Without a clause, 전에 means "previously". Add 그 to point at a time already mentioned: 그 전에 means "before that".
  • Time word + 전에. 이틀 전에 만났어요 means "I met (him or her) two days ago". Count words such as 이틀 (two days), 일주일 (one week) and 한 달 (one month) all work.
  • Shorter written form. Signs and manuals often drop 에: 사용 전, 출발 전. A full sentence reads 사용하기 전에 설명서를 읽으세요, "Read the instructions before use".
  • Formal alternative. In speeches and formal writing you may see -기에 앞서, which also means "before doing". Learn it later; -기 전에 is correct everywhere.

사용하기 전에 설명서를 읽으세요.

sayonghagi jeone seolmyeongseoreul ilgeuseyo.

Please read the instructions before use.

Adjectives and 이다 are rare before 전에. An adjective such as 크다 ("to be big") names a state, and a state does not "happen before" another event. To say what something was like earlier, use a time word instead: 전에는 작았어요 means "It was small before". For more neighbours of this pattern, see Time and Sequence. Next are the errors that appear most often.

What Mistakes Do Learners Make with -기 전에?

Learners make five common mistakes with -기 전에.

  1. Putting a past ending in the first clause. Learners write 밥을 먹었기 전에 손을 씻었어요. Actually the first clause stays bare. Say 밥을 먹기 전에 손을 씻었어요, because the order is already in 전에.
  2. Using the modifier form. Learners write 먹은 전에 or 먹는 전에, copying 후에 or 때. Actually 전에 takes -기, not -ㄴ/-는.
  3. Picking the wrong direction. Learners say 먹기 전에 when they mean "after eating". Actually -기 전에 names the later event. Use 먹은 후에 for "after".
  4. Saying 먹기 as a plain [먹기]. Learners follow the spelling. Actually the ㄱ is tense after a consonant stem, so say [먹끼].
  5. Dropping 에 in speech. Learners copy signs and say 한 시간 전 in a sentence. Actually 전 without 에 is for signs, labels and headings, and a spoken sentence usually needs 전에.

Whenever you reach for "before", check the order of events first. Now test yourself.

Exercise 1: Join the actions. Make one sentence with -기 전에: "I wash my hands before I eat." Use 손을 씻다 and 먹다.

Exercise 2: Fix the error. A learner writes 밥을 먹었기 전에 손을 씻었어요. Correct it.

Exercise 3: Choose the right word. You want to say "after eating, I wash my hands". Which pattern do you need: -기 전에 or -(으)ㄴ 후에?

Exercise 4: Translate. "I read a book before I sleep." (book = 책, sleep = 자다)

Answer Key

  • Exercise 1: 먹기 전에 손을 씻어요. [먹끼 저네 소늘 씨서요] The first clause is the later event, and the bare stem 먹 takes -기 전에.
  • Exercise 2: 밥을 먹기 전에 손을 씻었어요. [바블 먹끼 저네 소늘 씨서써요] The past ending moves to the final verb only.
  • Exercise 3: -(으)ㄴ 후에. The sentence is 먹은 후에 손을 씻어요 [머근 후에 소늘 씨서요]. Washing comes second, so the clause that comes first in time needs "after".
  • Exercise 4: 자기 전에 책을 읽어요. [자기 저네 채글 일거요] The bare stem 자 takes -기 전에, and 읽어요 carries the tense.

If you missed Exercise 1 or 2, return to the five building steps. If you missed Exercise 3, reread the section on -(으)ㄴ 후에. Next, plan where to go from here.

What Should You Learn Next after -기 전에 Grammar?

The best next lesson is -(으)ㄴ 후에, the "after" pattern, because it is the mirror image of -기 전에. Then study -(으)ㄹ 때 to say "when". The full set of patterns for order and timing is on Time and Sequence. To see where -기 전에 sits in a study plan, use the Beginner Grammar list. The noun-modifying endings behind -(으)ㄴ 후에 are explained in Noun-Modifying Forms.

What this lesson does not cover. It does not cover the written phrase -기에 앞서 in depth, the use of 전 in long compound nouns, or the way -기 전에 combines with other endings in formal prose. The level given here, A1, is an editorial estimate based on common textbook order and TOPIK I, not an official grading.

In short, -기 전에 grammar attaches to a bare verb stem, keeps the first clause free of tense, and puts the later event in the first clause.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does -기 전에 mean? -기 전에 means "before doing something". It links two actions and says that the first one in the sentence happens earlier than the last one. 자기 전에 이를 닦아요 means "I brush my teeth before I sleep". The brushing comes first, and the sleeping comes after it. It is one of the first time connectors that learners meet.

How do I attach -기 전에 to a verb or adjective? Remove 다 from the dictionary form and add -기 전에 to the stem: 가다 becomes 가기 전에, 먹다 becomes 먹기 전에. The stem never changes, even for irregular verbs such as 듣다 (듣기 전에) and 돕다 (돕기 전에). It is used with verbs. Adjectives almost never appear before 전에, because an adjective names a state, not a step.

Can -기 전에 be used in the past tense? The main verb can be past, present or future, but the verb before 전에 stays bare. Say 먹기 전에 손을 씻었어요, "I washed my hands before eating". Do not write 먹었기 전에. The first clause has no tense of its own, because 전에 already says it is earlier than the main verb.

Is -기 전에 used in speech or only in writing? -기 전에 is used everywhere: casual talk, polite speech, signs and manuals. It is neutral in tone. In written instructions it often shrinks to a noun phrase, as in 사용 전에 (before use). The main sound point is the tense ㄱ after a consonant stem, so 먹기 is said [먹끼], and 전에 is said [저네].

What is the most common mistake with -기 전에? Learners often copy English word order and put a past ending in the first clause, as in 밥을 먹었기 전에. The tense belongs only on the final verb. A second mistake is to choose -기 전에 when the first action is finished, where -(으)ㄴ 후에 ("after") is correct. Check the order of events before you pick.

What is the difference between -기 전에 and -(으)ㄴ 후에? -기 전에 means "before doing", and -(으)ㄴ 후에 means "after doing". They are mirror images. 먹기 전에 손을 씻어요 puts the washing first, and 먹은 후에 손을 씻어요 puts it second. -기 전에 uses the bare stem, while -(으)ㄴ 후에 needs the modifier ending ㄴ or 은.
