Combining Particles 에는 에서도 에게만: Meaning, Rules and Examples

Combining particles 에는 에서도 에게만 is the Korean pattern of stacking two particles on one noun: a role particle such as 에, 에서 or 에게, then a meaning particle such as 는, 도 or 만. 집에서는 한국어를 안 써요 means "At home, I do not use Korean". This lesson teaches the order and the meanings.
Start the Lesson
Estimated Time: 35 min Prerequisite: 씩 Each Particle
A man tells one friend something privately on a Seoul rooftop while two others stand farther away.
A recipient and a limit combine in “He told only me.”

What you'll learn

  • Put two particles in the right order on any noun.
  • Decide when a meaning particle replaces 이/가 or 을/를 and when it follows 에 or 에서.
  • Choose between 에는, 에도 and 에만 by meaning.
  • Recognise the spoken short forms 엔, 에선 and 한텐.

Before you start: you should know the location particle 에, the location particle 에서 and the meaning particles 은/는, 도 and 만. Time: about 35 minutes.

What Do the Combining Particles 에는 에서도 에게만 Mean?

The combining particles 에는 에서도 에게만 mean "at (topic)", "at (also)" and "to (only)". Each combination keeps the meaning of both parts: the first particle says what role the noun plays, and the second adds a shade of meaning.

Korean has two kinds of particles, and the difference explains the whole pattern:

Kind Korean term Job Examples
Case particle (role particle) 격조사 shows the noun's role: subject, object, place, recipient, direction 이/가, 을/를, 에, 에서, 에게, 한테, (으)로
Auxiliary particle (meaning particle) 보조사 adds a meaning: topic or contrast, "also", "only", "even" 은/는, 도, 만, 까지, 부터

A noun can carry one particle of each kind. 에서는 is 에서 ("at", where an action happens) plus 는 (topic or contrast). 에게만 is 에게 ("to", a person) plus 만 ("only").

A First Example

Listen to each sentence at normal speed, then slowly.

1. 집에서는 한국어를 안 써요. (jibeseoneun hangugeoreul an sseoyo) "At home, I do not use Korean."

Pronunciation: [지베서는 한구거를 안 써요]. 에서 marks home as the place of the activity, and 는 contrasts home with other places, such as school or work.

집noun에서location는topic 한국어noun를object 안 써요verb

noun · location · topic · object · verb

2. 저한테만 말했어요. (jeohanteman malhaesseoyo) "He told only me."

Pronunciation: [저한테만 말해써요]. 한테 is the spoken form of 에게 ("to", a person), and 만 limits the telling to one person. The subject is left out, as is common in Korean.

Both examples follow the same order: role first, meaning second. The next section turns that order into a rule.

How Do the Combining Particles 에는 에서도 에게만 Work?

The combining particles 에는 에서도 에게만 work with one ordering rule and one replacement rule. Learn both, and almost every combination follows.

  1. Ordering rule: the case particle comes first, the auxiliary particle second. 에 + 는 = 에는, never 는에.
  2. Replacement rule: 이/가 and 을/를 do not stack with 은/는 or 도. The auxiliary particle takes their place: 저 + 가 + 도 becomes 저도, and 커피 + 를 + 는 becomes 커피는.
  3. Keep the other case particles. 에, 에서, 에게, 한테, (으)로 and 와/과 stay in place, and the auxiliary particle follows them. The auxiliary particles 까지 and 부터 can also take 는, 도 or 만 after them: 서울까지만.

Pattern Table

Role particle + 는 (topic, contrast) + 도 (also) + 만 (only) Example
에 (at, to, on) 에는 에도 에만 주말에만 운동해요.
에서 (at, in: activity) 에서는 에서도 에서만 집에서도 일해요.
에게 (to a person, written) 에게는 에게도 에게만 친구에게만 말했어요.
한테 (to a person, spoken) 한테는 한테도 한테만 동생한테도 줬어요.
께 (to a person, honorific) 께는 께도 께만 선생님께도 드렸어요.
(으)로 (by, toward) (으)로는 (으)로도 (으)로만 버스로만 가요.
이/가 (subject) 은/는 replaces it 도 replaces it 만 replaces it 저도 가요.
을/를 (object) 은/는 replaces it 도 replaces it 만 replaces it 커피만 마셔요.

Pronunciation of the harder forms: 에서도 is [에서도], 한테만 is [한테만], and (으)로만 follows the noun: 버스로만 [버스로만], 지하철로만 [지하철로만], 손으로만 [소느로만]. The (으) appears after a consonant other than ㄹ, as in 손으로.

Why Are 이/가 and 을/를 Different?

이/가 and 을/를 mark the two core roles, subject and object, which the verb already implies. When 은/는, 도 or 만 appear, the role stays clear from the sentence, so Korean drops the case particle. 에, 에서 and 에게 carry real information (place, activity location, recipient), so dropping them would change the meaning. 집는 is not a short form of 집에서는; it is a mistake.

One exception is 만. Because 만 is an auxiliary particle that can come before a case particle, 만이 and 만을 also exist: 너만을 기다렸어 ("I waited only for you"). These forms add emphasis and sound written or lyrical. The worked example below builds one sentence step by step.

Worked Example, Step by Step

To say "At home, I do not use Korean", start from the basic sentence and add the meaning particle in the right slot. Follow the steps.

  1. Write the basic sentence. 집에서 한국어를 안 써요. 에서 marks home as the place of an activity (using Korean).
  2. Decide what extra meaning you want. You want to contrast home with other places, so you need 는.
  3. Find the right noun. The contrast is about home, so 는 goes on 집에서.
  4. Apply the ordering rule. 에서 + 는 = 에서는. Write 집에서는.
  5. Check the other particles. 한국어를 keeps 를, because the contrast is not on Korean. The result is 집에서는 한국어를 안 써요.

You'll know it worked when the noun has the role particle first and the meaning particle second, and only one noun carries the contrast. Common mistake at this step: dropping 에서 and writing 집은 한국어를 안 써요. That sentence sounds like "As for the house, it does not use Korean", because 집 now looks like the topic and the subject.

Repeat with 저한테만 말했어요: the role is "to me" (한테), the extra meaning is "only" (만), so 저 + 한테 + 만 = 저한테만. With the order clear, the next section compares the three most common combinations on the same noun.

How Are Particle Combinations Different from Similar Forms?

에는, 에도 and 에만 share the role particle 에 but add three different meanings: contrast, addition and limit. Compare them on one time word, 주말 ("weekend").

Form Meaning added Example Translation
주말에 none 주말에 쉬어요. I rest at the weekend.
주말에는 topic or contrast 주말에는 쉬어요. At the weekend (unlike weekdays), I rest.
주말에도 also 주말에도 일해요. I work at the weekend too.
주말에만 only 주말에만 운동해요. I exercise only at the weekend.

The same pattern holds for 에서: 회사에서는 영어를 써요 ("At work, I use English", in contrast to elsewhere), 회사에서도 ("at work too") and 회사에서만 ("only at work"). The meanings of the auxiliary particles themselves are taught in their own lessons: topic particle 은/는, also particle 도 and only particle 만.

Learners should also keep 에는 apart from 에서는, because the role particle still matters. 집에는 고양이가 있어요 ("At home there is a cat") uses 에 for existence. 집에서는 고양이를 안 키워요 ("At home we do not keep a cat") uses 에서 for an activity. The base rule is explained in 에 vs 에서. The next section covers further combinations and their limits.

When Do You Use It, and When Not?

Use a particle combination when a noun needs both a role and an extra meaning. Do not stack when the role particle is 이/가 or 을/를, and do not stack when the extra meaning is not intended.

Other Common Combinations

  • With people: 친구한테도 물어봤어요 ("I asked my friend too"). 선생님께만 말씀드렸어요 ("I told only the teacher"). The three forms 에게, 한테 and 께 are compared in 에게 한테 께 indirect object particles.
  • With 까지 and 부터: 서울까지만 가요 ("I am going only as far as Seoul"). 내일부터는 일찍 일어날 거예요 ("From tomorrow, I will get up early").
  • With 와/과: 친구와도 이야기했어요 ("I talked with my friend too").
  • Three particles: 여기에서만은 조용히 해 주세요 ("At least here, please be quiet"). The order stays role, 만, then 은/는 or 도.

Spoken Short Forms

Conversation often shortens the 는 combinations. 에는 becomes 엔 (집엔 아무도 없어요, "There is nobody at home"), 에서는 becomes 에선 (학교에선 조용해요, "At school it is quiet"), and 한테는 becomes 한텐. These forms are standard but relaxed; use the full forms in writing.

Writing and 의 Combinations

Formal writing adds one combination rare in speech: a case particle plus 의 ("of"), which turns a phrase into a noun modifier. 서울에서의 생활 means "life in Seoul", and 친구와의 약속 means "a promise with a friend". These appear in essays, news and titles, and B1 learners mainly need to recognise them. The next section lists the errors to avoid.

What Mistakes Do Learners Make?

Learners make five predictable mistakes with combining particles. Each one breaks either the ordering rule or the replacement rule.

  1. Putting the auxiliary particle first. Learners often assume that "only" comes before "at", as in English "only at the library", so they write 도서관만에서 공부해요. Actually the role particle comes first in Korean. Say 도서관에서만 공부해요.
  2. Stacking 이/가 after 도 or 은/는. 제 친구도가 왔어요 and 저는가 are wrong. 도 and 은/는 replace 이/가: 제 친구도 왔어요.
  3. Dropping the role particle. 집는 한국어를 안 써요 is wrong. Keep 에서: 집에서는.
  4. Using 에서는 for existence. 집에서는 고양이가 있어요 sounds odd to many speakers. Existence takes 에: 집에는 고양이가 있어요.
  5. Mistaking 만에 for a stacking error. 3년 만에 만났어요 ("We met for the first time in three years") is correct. Here 만 is a separate word meaning "after a gap of", written with a space.

The rule that 은/는 and 도 replace 이/가 is also covered in omitting particles in Korean. Now test yourself.

  1. Fill the gap: 저는 도서관__ 공부해요. (I study only at the library.)

    1. 만에서
    2. 만
    3. 에서만
    Show answer

    에서만

The role particle comes first and the meaning particle second: 에서 + 만. Without 에서, the library would become the thing studied.

  2. Which sentence correctly says "My friend came to the party too"?

    1. 제 친구도가 파티에 왔어요.
    2. 제 친구가도 파티에 왔어요.
    3. 제 친구도 파티에 왔어요.
    Show answer

    제 친구도 파티에 왔어요.

도 replaces the subject particle 이/가 instead of stacking with it.

  3. Which sentence means "I exercise only at the weekend"?

    1. 주말에도 운동해요.
    2. 주말에는 운동해요.
    3. 주말에만 운동해요.
    Show answer

    주말에만 운동해요.

에만 adds "only". 에도 adds "also", and 에는 adds a topic or contrast.

  4. What does 주말에도 일해요 mean?

    1. I work at the weekend too.
    2. At the weekend (unlike weekdays), I work.
    3. I work only at the weekend.
    Show answer

I work at the weekend too.

에 marks the time and 도 adds "too".

  5. Why is 집는 한국어를 안 써요 wrong?

    1. 는 must come before 에서
    2. 집 needs the subject particle 이 before 는
    3. The role particle 에서 was dropped; say 집에서는
    Show answer

The role particle 에서 was dropped; say 집에서는

에, 에서 and 에게 carry real information, so they stay and the meaning particle follows them.

  6. What is the spoken short form of 에는?

    1. 에선
    2. 엔
    3. 한텐
    Show answer

    엔

에는 shortens to 엔, as in 집엔 아무도 없어요. 에선 is short for 에서는, and 한텐 for 한테는.

  7. Is 3년 만에 만났어요 a stacking error?

    1. Yes; 만 can never be followed by 에
    2. No; 만 here is a separate word meaning "after a gap of", written with a space
    3. Yes; it should be 3년에만
    Show answer

No; 만 here is a separate word meaning "after a gap of", written with a space

This 만 is not the "only" particle, so the sentence is correct: "We met for the first time in three years."

  8. When two particles stack on one noun, which comes first?

    1. The role (case) particle, as 에서 in 에서는
    2. Either order is correct
    3. The meaning (auxiliary) particle, as 는 in 는에서
    Show answer

The role (case) particle, as 에서 in 에서는

Role first, meaning second: 에 + 는 = 에는, never 는에.

  1. Choose the form. 저는 도서관(에서만 / 만에서) 공부해요. ("I study only at the library.")
  2. Fix the error. 제 친구도가 파티에 왔어요. (The speaker means "My friend came to the party too.")
  3. Translate. "I go to the gym at the weekend too." Use 헬스장 (gym).
  4. Write your own. Write one sentence about a language you use, or do not use, in one particular place.

Answer Key

  1. 저는 도서관에서만 공부해요. (jeoneun doseogwaneseoman gongbuhaeyo) Pronounced [저는 도서과네서만 공부해요]. The role particle 에서 comes first, then 만.
  1. 제 친구도 파티에 왔어요. (je chingudo patie wasseoyo) Pronounced [제 친구도 파티에 와써요]. 도 replaces the subject particle 가.
  1. 주말에도 헬스장에 가요. (jumaredo helseujange gayo) Pronounced [주마레도 헬스장에 가요]. 에 marks the time, and 도 adds "too".
  1. Sample answer: 회사에서는 영어를 써요. (hoesaeseoneun yeongeoreul sseoyo) "At work, I use English." Pronounced [회사에서는 영어를 써요]. Any sentence with a role particle followed by 는, 도 or 만 is right.

If you put 만 or 도 before 에서, or kept 가 after 도, return to the two rules: role first, and 이/가 or 을/를 drop out. Then continue with the next lessons.

What This Lesson Does Not Cover

The combining particles lesson covers stacking with 은/는, 도 and 만 at B1. It does not cover the less common auxiliary particles in detail, such as 조차, 마저 and (이)라도, which have their own lessons in the auxiliary particles set, or the full list of written 의 combinations.

Next Lessons and Where to Go from Here

After combining particles 에는 에서도 에게만, review the 씩 each particle lesson if you skipped it, then return to the set overview, Korean auxiliary particles, to choose the next particle. To test yourself across all particles, try the Korean particles quiz.

This page uses Revised Romanization only as a learning aid; the Hangul is the reference. To remember the idea in one line: combining particles 에는 에서도 에게만 put the role particle first and the meaning particle second, and 은/는, 도 and 만 replace 이/가 and 을/를 instead of stacking on them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Say 저만이 or 너만을?

Yes. 만 is the auxiliary particle most often followed by 이/가 or 을/를 (까지 and 부터 can be too, as in 너부터가): 너만을 사랑해 (I love only you). The extra particle adds emphasis and sounds written or lyrical. In everyday speech, 너만 사랑해 is more natural. 은/는 and 도 never take 이/가 or 을/를 after them.

What Is the Difference between 집에는 and 집에서는?

집에는 marks the place where something exists or arrives: 집에는 고양이가 있어요 (At home there is a cat). 집에서는 marks the place where an activity happens: 집에서는 한국어를 안 써요 (At home I do not use Korean). The choice follows the 에 versus 에서 rule; the 는 adds contrast.

Can Three Particles Stack?

Yes, though it is less common. 여기에서만은 담배를 피우지 마세요 means "At least here, of all places, do not smoke": 에서 marks the place, 만 means only, and 은 adds contrast. Keep the same order: role particle, then 만, then 은/는 or 도. Two particles are enough for most sentences.

Is 3년 만에 a Stacking Mistake?

No. 만 in 3년 만에 is a different word: a dependent noun meaning "after a gap of", written with a space. 3년 만에 만났어요 means "We met for the first time in three years". The particle 만 (only) attaches without a space and comes after 에: 3년에만.

Do People Shorten 에는 and 에서는 in Speech?

Yes. In casual and polite conversation, 에는 often becomes 엔 and 에서는 becomes 에선: 집엔 아무도 없어요, 학교에선 조용해요. 한테는 becomes 한텐. The full forms are standard in writing and careful speech; the short forms are also correct, just more relaxed.
