What you'll learn
- Attach -지 않을 수 없다 to any verb or adjective stem, and to a noun with 이/가 아닐 수 없다.
- Describe an action that feelings or circumstances force on you.
- Explain why two negatives make a positive meaning.
- Pronounce the ending correctly: [아늘쑤 업따].
- Tell it apart from -(으)ㄹ 수밖에 없다, -지 않으면 안 되다 and -(으)ㄹ 수 없다.
Before you start: you should know how to find a verb stem (drop 다 from the dictionary form) and the negative ending -지 않다. If stems are new to you, read about verb stems first. For the negative itself, see -지 않다 negation. Audio plays only when you press a button.
What Does -지 않을 수 없다 Grammar Mean?
-지 않을 수 없다 grammar means "I cannot stop myself from doing this" or "I have no choice but to do this." It is built from three parts. -지 않다 means "do not." 수 is a bound noun that means "way" or "possibility." 없다 means "there is not." Read word by word, the pattern says: "There is no way of not doing it." The result is that the action happens.
Here are the first two examples. The pattern is the same in both, and only the verb changes.
- 그 이야기를 듣고 웃지 않을 수 없었어요. (geu iyagireul deutgo utji aneul su eopseosseoyo.) [그 이야기를 듣꼬 욷찌 아늘쑤 업써써요] = "I could not help laughing after hearing that story."
- 가지 않을 수 없었어요. (gaji aneul su eopseosseoyo.) [가지 아늘쑤 업써써요] = "I had no choice but to go."
The first sentence is driven by a feeling: the story was funny and the laughing came by itself. The second is driven by circumstances: something made going necessary. In both, the speaker is not choosing freely. That is the heart of the pattern.
Why use two negatives? English does the same: "I can't not go," or "I couldn't help but laugh." Korean uses this shape often in formal speech and in writing, where it adds weight. The next section shows how to build the pattern.
How Do You Form -지 않을 수 없다?
-지 않을 수 없다 is formed by dropping 다 from the dictionary form and adding -지 않을 수 없다. The stem never needs an extra 으, because the ending begins with the consonant ㅈ, and the rest (않을 수 없다) never changes. Put the tense and politeness on the last word, 없다. Write 수 as a separate word.
| Dictionary form | Stem | Stem + -지 않을 수 없다 | Polite past | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 가다 | 가 | 가지 않을 수 없다 | 가지 않을 수 없었어요 | had no choice but to go |
| 웃다 | 웃 | 웃지 않을 수 없다 | 웃지 않을 수 없었어요 | could not help laughing |
| 먹다 | 먹 | 먹지 않을 수 없다 | 먹지 않을 수 없었어요 | could not help eating |
| 울다 | 울 | 울지 않을 수 없다 | 울지 않을 수 없었어요 | could not help crying |
| 듣다 | 듣 | 듣지 않을 수 없다 | 듣지 않을 수 없었어요 | could not help hearing |
| 슬프다 | 슬프 | 슬프지 않을 수 없다 | 슬프지 않을 수 없었어요 | could not help being sad |
| 감동하다 | 감동하 | 감동하지 않을 수 없다 | 감동하지 않을 수 없었어요 | could not help being moved |
The table shows one rule applied to seven words. The next three parts look at the groups of stems one at a time.
Stems Ending in a Vowel
A vowel stem takes -지 directly: 가다 becomes 가지, 슬프다 becomes 슬프지, and 감동하다 becomes 감동하지. Nothing is added or dropped. Examples:
- 누구라도 이 노래를 들으면 감동하지 않을 수 없어요. (nugurado i noraereul deureumyeon gamdonghaji aneul su eopseoyo.) [누구라도 이 노래를 드르면 감동하지 아늘쑤 업써요] = "Anyone who hears this song cannot help being moved."
- 그 소식을 들으면 슬프지 않을 수 없어요. (geu sosigeul deureumyeon seulpeuji aneul su eopseoyo.) [그 소시글 드르면 슬프지 아늘쑤 업써요] = "You cannot help being sad when you hear that news."
The second sentence shows that adjectives work too. Vowel stems are the simplest case. A stem with a final consonant changes the sound, though not the spelling.
Stems Ending in a Consonant
A consonant stem also takes -지 directly. The spelling stays the same, but the final consonant makes the ㅈ of 지 sound tense: 웃지 is spoken [욷찌], 먹지 is spoken [먹찌], and 듣지 is spoken [듣찌]. This follows the standard pronunciation rules (표준 발음법) of the 국립국어원 (National Institute of Korean Language) for tensing after a stem-final consonant.
- 맛있어서 먹지 않을 수 없었어요. (masisseoseo meokji aneul su eopseosseoyo.) [마시써서 먹찌 아늘쑤 업써써요] = "It was so tasty that I could not help eating."
- 그 말을 듣지 않을 수 없었어요. (geu mareul deutji aneul su eopseosseoyo.) [그 마를 듣찌 아늘쑤 업써써요] = "I could not help hearing those words."
Now listen to the middle of the ending. 않을 is spelled with ㅎ, but the ㅎ is silent before 을: 않 + 을 is spoken [아늘]. The bound noun 수 then joins it, and its ㅅ becomes tense: [아늘쑤]. Say [아늘쑤 업따] as one smooth run. This is the same linking rule that turns 먹어요 into [머거요]. Two more groups need a short note, because learners expect trouble with them.
Do ㄹ-Stems, Irregular Stems, Adjectives and Nouns Change?
No. Most endings make ㄹ-stems drop their ㄹ and irregular stems change shape. Because -지 begins with a consonant, none of that happens here.
ㄹ-stems keep the ㄹ: 울다 gives 울지 않을 수 없다, and 만들다 gives 만들지 않을 수 없다.
ㄷ-irregular verbs keep the ㄷ: 듣다 gives 듣지 않을 수 없다, not 들어지 않을 수 없다.
ㅂ-, ㅅ- and 르-irregular verbs also keep their dictionary stem: 돕지, 낫지, 모르지.
하다 verbs and adjectives behave like any vowel stem: 인정하지, 건강하지.
영화가 슬퍼서 울지 않을 수 없었어요. (yeonghwaga seulpeoseo ulji aneul su eopseosseoyo.) [영화가 슬퍼서 울지 아늘쑤 업써써요] = "The movie was so sad that I could not help crying."
Nouns do not take the ending directly. A noun needs 이다 in the negative, 아니다, and the pattern becomes N이/가 아닐 수 없다: "it cannot be anything but N." It appears mostly in writing.
- 이것은 비극이 아닐 수 없습니다. (igeoseun bigeugi anil su eopseumnida.) [이거슨 비그기 아닐쑤 업씀니다] = "This cannot be anything but a tragedy."
Here the first part is 아닐, the future-modifier form of 아니다, and 수 없다 follows it. With the formation clear, one sentence can be built step by step.
Worked Example: Building a Sentence with -지 않을 수 없다
-지 않을 수 없다 grammar works by turning a reaction into something unavoidable. Follow the steps with the idea "Anyone who hears this song cannot help being moved."
- Start with the verb. The verb is 감동하다 (to be moved). Its dictionary form ends in 다.
- Find the stem. Drop 다. The stem is 감동하. It ends in the vowel ㅏ.
- Add -지 않을 수 없다. The ending needs no 으, so 감동하 + 지 않을 수 없다 = 감동하지 않을 수 없다.
- Choose the style. For a general statement in the present, use the polite 없어요. For a feeling that already happened, use 없었어요.
- Rebuild the sentence. Put the condition first: 누구라도 이 노래를 들으면 감동하지 않을 수 없어요. (nugurado i noraereul deureumyeon gamdonghaji aneul su eopseoyo.) [누구라도 이 노래를 드르면 감동하지 아늘쑤 업써요]
Sentence
Anyone who hears this song cannot help being moved.
Show answer
누구라도 이 노래를 들으면 감동하지 않을 수 없어요
You will know it worked when 않을 수 없어요 comes last and 수 stays a separate word. The most common slip at this step is to write 없다 as 있다. 감동하지 않을 수 있어요 means "I am able not to be moved," the opposite idea. The sentence is now complete, but the pattern has limits on tense and sentence type.
Which Tenses and Sentence Types Work with -지 않을 수 없다?
-지 않을 수 없다 works in the present and the past, mostly in statements. All changes happen on 없다, the last word. The table shows the forms for 웃다.
| Sentence type | Form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Polite present | 웃지 않을 수 없어요 | One cannot help laughing. |
| Polite past | 웃지 않을 수 없었어요 | I could not help laughing. |
| Formal present | 웃지 않을 수 없습니다 | One cannot help laughing. |
| Formal past | 웃지 않을 수 없었습니다 | I could not help laughing. |
| Casual past | 웃지 않을 수 없었어 | I couldn't help laughing (to a friend). |
| Plain written | 웃지 않을 수 없다 | One cannot help laughing. |
The past form is spoken [업써써요]. The formal present 없습니다 is spoken [업씀니다].
The past is the most natural form for a personal reaction, because you usually describe a feeling after it happens. The present fits a general truth that applies to everyone, and the plain form 없다 fits essays and reports.
- 사실을 인정하지 않을 수 없습니다. (sasireul injeonghaji aneul su eopseumnida.) [사시를 인정하지 아늘쑤 업씀니다] = "We cannot but admit the fact."
The pattern is almost never a question, and it cannot be a command or a suggestion. You cannot say "Please go" with it. When it does appear in a question, it asks about a feeling in a general sense, such as "Can anyone help laughing?" The most useful contrast for a learner is next to the pattern it is closest to.
How Is -지 않을 수 없다 Different from -(으)ㄹ 수밖에 없다?
-지 않을 수 없다 and -(으)ㄹ 수밖에 없다 both translate as "cannot help but" or "have no choice but to," and the difference is small. -지 않을 수 없다 describes a forced action by a person, often because of a feeling. -(으)ㄹ 수밖에 없다 presents a result as the only possible outcome of a reason.
| Point | -지 않을 수 없다 | -(으)ㄹ 수밖에 없다 |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning | cannot help but, have no choice but to | have no choice but to, bound to |
| Focus | a forced action, often by feeling | the only possible outcome |
| Attaches to | stem + 지 않을 수 없다 | stem + (으)ㄹ 수밖에 없다 |
| Example | 웃지 않을 수 없었어요. | 웃을 수밖에 없었어요. |
| Meaning of example | I could not help laughing. | I had no choice but to laugh. |
The first sentence says that the laugh came out of the speaker. The second says that the situation allowed no other result. In many sentences either form is acceptable. For a logical conclusion, only the second fits: 이 가격이면 비쌀 수밖에 없어요 means "At this price, it has to be expensive." For a person who is moved to act, the first fits better. The full rules are on the page for -(으)ㄹ 수밖에 없다.
Two other neighbours are worth knowing.
- -지 않으면 안 되다 is also built from -지 않-, but it states a requirement, "have to." It is about duty, while -지 않을 수 없다 is about feeling or constraint. See -지 않으면 안 되다 and the plainer -아/어야 하다/되다.
- -(으)ㄹ 수 없다 means "cannot," with no double negative. 웃을 수 없어요 means "I cannot laugh," while 웃지 않을 수 없어요 means "I cannot stop myself from laughing."
These contrasts lead to the smaller variations of the pattern itself.
Variations and Edge Cases of -지 않을 수 없다
-지 않을 수 없다 has three common variations: a short negative form, a "cannot help being" form with adjectives and a formal written style. Each one appears in real use.
- The short negative. Instead of -지 않다, you can put 안 in front of the verb and use the -ㄹ 수 없다 ending: 안 갈 수 없었어요 (an gal su eopseosseoyo) [안 갈쑤 업써써요] means "I could not not go." It is a plainer spoken version. The long form is more common in writing. See -지 않다 negation for the two negatives.
- With adjectives and nouns. The pattern can express a feeling or a judgment, not only an action: 슬프지 않을 수 없어요 ("I cannot help being sad"), 비극이 아닐 수 없어요 ("It cannot be anything but a tragedy").
- Formal and written style. Reports, speeches and news often use 없다 or 없습니다 to make an unavoidable conclusion sound firm: 인정하지 않을 수 없습니다.
Also keep in mind one point about use. The pattern works well with first-person feelings and general statements. It is less common for a third person's feelings in plain speech, where you would add an ending such as -는 것 같아요. This lesson covers the usual meaning of "cannot help but." The mistakes below show where the boundary causes real errors.
What Mistakes Do Learners Make with -지 않을 수 없다?

Learners most often get the meaning, the spelling or the verb wrong. Four mistakes appear again and again.
- Reading it as "cannot." Learners see 없다 and think the sentence is negative. 웃지 않을 수 없어요 does not mean "I cannot laugh." It means "I cannot stop myself from laughing." The two negatives cancel each other.
- Swapping 없다 for 있다. 웃지 않을 수 있어요 is a real sentence, but it means "I am able not to laugh." For "cannot help," the last word must be 없다.
- Dropping the space before 수. 수 is a bound noun and needs a space: 않을 수 없다. Writing it as 않을수 없다 or 않을수없다 is wrong.
- Using the pattern for a plain duty. For a rule or a deadline, such as "I have to submit this today," use -아/어야 하다/되다 or -지 않으면 안 되다. -지 않을 수 없다 suggests that the speaker was pushed by a feeling or by circumstances.
A quick check for any "cannot help" sentence: Is the stem followed by -지 않을? Is 수 a separate word? Does the last word say 없다? If all three answers are yes, the sentence is sound.
The practice set below tests these points directly.
Practice and Answers
Try the four items before you read the answer key. Cover the answers with your hand.
- Choose the form. Complete: 사실을 인정하___ 않을 수 없습니다. (지 / 고 / 서)
- Fix the error. A learner writes 웃지 않을수 없었어요. Correct it.
- Translate. "The meeting ran long, so I could not help being late." Use 늦다 and the polite past.
- Write your own. Write one sentence about a feeling you could not hold back, using -지 않을 수 없었어요. Then rewrite it with -(으)ㄹ 수밖에 없었어요.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does -지 않을 수 없다 mean?
-지 않을 수 없다 means "cannot help but" or "have no choice but to." It describes an action that is forced by circumstances or by a strong feeling. 그 이야기를 듣고 웃지 않을 수 없었어요 means "I could not help laughing after hearing that story." The pattern has two negatives (않- and 없-), but the meaning is positive: the action happens.
How do I attach -지 않을 수 없다 to a verb or adjective?
Drop 다 from the dictionary form and add -지 않을 수 없다. The ending begins with -지, so there is no 으 and irregular stems do not change: 가다 gives 가지 않을 수 없다, 듣다 gives 듣지 않을 수 없다, 울다 gives 울지 않을 수 없다, and the adjective 슬프다 gives 슬프지 않을 수 없다. Write 수 as a separate word: 않을 수 없다.
Can -지 않을 수 없다 be used in the past tense?
Yes, and the past is the most common form. The tense goes on 없다: 가지 않을 수 없었어요 means "I had no choice but to go." The present 없어요 is used for general statements, such as 누구라도 감동하지 않을 수 없어요 ("Anyone cannot help being moved").
Is -지 않을 수 없다 used in speech or only in writing?
Both, but it sounds formal and a little literary. In speech it appears as 없었어요 after a feeling or an event. In writing and speeches it appears as 없습니다 or 없다: 사실을 인정하지 않을 수 없습니다. A more casual spoken version uses the short negative: 안 갈 수 없었어요.
What is the most common mistake with -지 않을 수 없다?
The most common mistake is reading it as "cannot do." 웃지 않을 수 없어요 does not mean "I cannot laugh." It means "I cannot stop myself from laughing." A second mistake is replacing 없다 with 있다: 웃지 않을 수 있어요 means "I am able not to laugh," which is a different idea.
What is the difference between -지 않을 수 없다 and -(으)ㄹ 수밖에 없다?
Both can be translated as "cannot help but." -(으)ㄹ 수밖에 없다 presents a result as the only possible outcome and also works with logic and adjectives: 비쌀 수밖에 없어요 ("It has to be expensive"). -지 않을 수 없다 focuses on a forced action by a person, often because of a feeling, and it sounds more formal.
