-(으)ㄴ/는 편이 낫다 Grammar in Korean: Meaning and How to Use It

-(으)ㄴ/는 편이 낫다 grammar is the Korean pattern for saying "it is better to..." after weighing two options. It says that one choice is the better side. 기다리는 편이 나아요 means "It is better to wait," and 그냥 가는 편이 낫겠어요 means "It would be better to just go." Unlike a simple piece of advice, it carries a comparison: the speaker has looked at the options and picked one.

What you'll learn

  • Attach -(으)ㄴ/는 편이 낫다 to action verbs and to adjectives.
  • Conjugate 낫다 correctly, because it is a ㅅ-irregular word.
  • Choose between -(으)ㄴ/는 편이 낫다, -는 게 좋다 and -아/어야 하다.
  • Use 차라리 and the past form to say "it would have been better to...".

Before you start: you should know the polite ending -아요/어요 and the modifier endings -는 and -(으)ㄴ. Time: about 30 minutes. This site places the pattern at level B2, which is an editorial estimate. The official TOPIK information is published at topik.go.kr.

What Does -(으)ㄴ/는 편이 낫다 Grammar Mean?

-(으)ㄴ/는 편이 낫다 means "it is better to do this than the other thing." An English speaker would say "I'd rather wait," "It's better to wait," or "Waiting is the better option." The Korean version points to one "side" of a choice and calls it better.

The pattern has three working parts.

Part Form Job
Verb + modifier 기다리는 "the act of waiting"
Noun 편 (+ 이) "side, direction, option"
Adjective 낫다 "is better"

The noun 편 means a side or a direction, as in 이쪽 편 ("this side"). So the literal meaning is "the waiting side is the better one." Because 낫다 is an adjective, it is the word that changes for politeness and tense. The part in front stays the same.

A First Example

Listen to each sentence at normal speed.

1. 기다리는 편이 나아요. (gidarineun pyeoni naayo.) "It is better to wait."

Pronunciation: [기다리는 펴니 나아요]. The ㄴ of 편 moves to the next syllable, so 편이 sounds like [펴니].

2. 그냥 가는 편이 낫겠어요. (geunyang ganeun pyeoni natgesseoyo.) "It would be better to just go."

Pronunciation: [그냥 가는 펴니 낟께써요]. The ㅅ of 낫 is said as [ㄷ], and the ㄱ of 겠 becomes tense [ㄲ].

Sentence 2 uses 낫겠어요 instead of 나아요. The ending 겠 makes the judgement softer and more careful. The word 그냥 means "just, simply", and it often appears with this pattern.

How Do You Form -(으)ㄴ/는 편이 낫다?

Take the dictionary form, remove 다, add the right modifier, then 편이 and a form of 낫다. The modifier depends on the word type.

  1. Action verbs: stem + 는 편이 낫다.
  2. Adjectives: stem + (으)ㄴ 편이 낫다, with ㄴ after a vowel and 은 after a consonant.
  3. Looking back (past): stem + (으)ㄴ 편이 나았다, for "it would have been better".
  4. Nouns: do not use 편. Say A보다 B가 낫다, as in 커피보다 차가 나아요.
Dictionary form Type With -(으)ㄴ/는 편이 낫다 RR
기다리다 (to wait) verb 기다리는 편이 낫다 gidarineun pyeoni natda
쉬다 (to rest) verb 쉬는 편이 낫다 swineun pyeoni natda
먹다 (to eat) verb 먹는 편이 낫다 meongneun pyeoni natda [멍는 펴니 낟따]
살다 (to live) ㄹ-verb 사는 편이 낫다 saneun pyeoni natda
조용하다 (to be quiet) adjective 조용한 편이 낫다 joyonghan pyeoni natda
크다 (to be big) adjective 큰 편이 낫다 keun pyeoni natda
작다 (to be small) adjective 작은 편이 낫다 jageun pyeoni natda [자근 펴니 낟따]
길다 (to be long) ㄹ-adjective 긴 편이 낫다 gin pyeoni natda

An ㄹ-stem drops the ㄹ before 는 or ㄴ, so 살다 gives 사는 and 길다 gives 긴.

Action Verbs

An action verb takes 는. Both vowel stems and consonant stems use the same ending.

몸이 안 좋으면 쉬는 편이 나아요. (momi an joeumyeon swineun pyeoni naayo.) "If you don't feel well, it is better to rest." Pronunciation: [모미 안 조으면 쉬는 펴니 나아요].

택시를 타는 것보다 지하철을 타는 편이 나아요. (taeksireul taneun geotboda jihacheoreul taneun pyeoni naayo.) "Taking the subway is better than taking a taxi." Pronunciation: [택씨를 타는 걷뽀다 지하처를 타는 펴니 나아요]. The word 것보다 means "than the thing of...", and it brings in the second option.

Adjectives

An adjective takes (으)ㄴ. The sentence then compares qualities: "a quieter room is better."

방이 조용한 편이 나아요. (bangi joyonghan pyeoni naayo.) "A quiet room is better." Pronunciation: [방이 조용한 펴니 나아요].

Notice that the modifier here is -(으)ㄴ even though the meaning is present. For an adjective, the plain modifier -(으)ㄴ already means "the one that is quiet."

How Do You Conjugate 낫다?

낫다 is a ㅅ-irregular word. The ㅅ disappears before a vowel, but it stays before a consonant. That is why you say 나아요, not 낫어요.

Form Spelling RR and spoken form
Polite present 나아요 naayo
Polite past 나았어요 naasseoyo [나아써요]
Softer 낫겠어요 natgesseoyo [낟께써요]
Probable 나을 거예요 naeul geoyeyo [나을꺼예요]
Formal 낫습니다 natseumnida [낟씀니다]
Modifier 나은 naeun
If 나으면 naeumyeon
Negative 낫지 않아요 natji anayo [낟찌 아나요]
Honorific 나으세요 naeuseyo

Here is a past-looking sentence. 비가 와서 집에 있는 편이 나았어요. (biga waseo jibe inneun pyeoni naasseoyo.) "Because it rained, staying home was the better choice." Pronunciation: [비가 와서 지베 인는 펴니 나아써요].

Three Words That Sound Alike

Three words with a similar shape cause spelling mistakes. 낫다 means "be better" or "get well", 낮다 means "be low", and 낳다 means "give birth". Their spoken forms are [낟따], [낟따] and [나타].

Word Meaning Sound Example
낫다 be better, recover [낟따] 감기가 나았어요.
낮다 be low [낟따] 온도가 낮아요.
낳다 give birth [나타] 아기를 낳았어요.

감기가 나았어요. (gamgiga naasseoyo.) "My cold got better." Pronunciation: [감기가 나아써요]. In this sentence 낫다 is the verb "get better", not the "be better" of the comparison.

Worked Example: Building a Sentence with -(으)ㄴ/는 편이 낫다

Goal: tell a friend, "It would be better to sleep early today."

  1. Choose the verb. 자다 (to sleep). The stem is 자.
  2. Add the modifier. 자 + 는 = 자는.
  3. Add the noun. 자는 편이.
  4. Choose the ending. 낫다 plus 겠 for a softer feeling, then 어요: 낫겠어요.
  5. Add the time and the word 일찍. 오늘은 일찍 자는 편이 낫겠어요.

Result: 오늘은 일찍 자는 편이 낫겠어요. (oneureun iljjik janeun pyeoni natgesseoyo.) "It would be better to sleep early today."

Pronunciation: [오느른 일찍 자는 펴니 낟께써요].

Sentence

오늘은일찍자는편이낫겠어요
Show answer

오늘은 일찍 자는 편이 낫겠어요

How Do You Say "It Would Have Been Better"?

To look back at a choice, use the past modifier -(으)ㄴ and a past form of 낫다. Add 차라리 ("rather, better") when you want to stress that you prefer the other choice.

차라리 안 간 편이 나았을 거예요. (charari an gan pyeoni naasseul geoyeyo.) "It would have been better not to go."

Pronunciation: [차라리 안 간 펴니 나아쓸꺼예요]. In 나았을 거예요 the ㄱ of 거 becomes tense after the ending -ㄹ, so you hear 꺼.

Other adverbs strengthen the comparison:

Word Meaning Example
차라리 rather 차라리 걸어가는 편이 나아요.
훨씬 far, much 훨씬 일찍 가는 편이 나아요.
그냥 just 그냥 집에 있는 편이 낫겠어요.
오히려 on the contrary 오히려 안 하는 편이 나아요.

With "rather than", the pattern -느니 can introduce the option you reject: 기다리느니 차라리 걸어가는 편이 낫겠어요 ("Rather than wait, it would be better to walk"). Pronunciation: [기다리느니 차라리 거러가는 펴니 낟께써요]. You can read about the first half in the lesson on -느니.

How Is -(으)ㄴ/는 편이 낫다 Different from -는 게 좋다 and -아/어야 하다?

All three patterns can be translated as "it is better to" or "you should", but they differ in strength and in the comparison.

-는 게 좋다 -(으)ㄴ/는 편이 낫다 -아/어야 하다
Core meaning It is good to... It is better to... (than the other option) You must...
Compares options Not necessarily Yes No
Strength Gentle advice Judgement after weighing choices Obligation
Example 일찍 자는 게 좋아요 일찍 자는 편이 나아요 일찍 자야 해요

Compare these two sentences.

  • 일찍 자는 게 좋아요. (iljjik janeun ge joayo.) = "It is good to go to bed early." Pronunciation: [일찍 자는 게 조아요].
  • 일찍 자야 해요. (iljjik jaya haeyo.) = "You must go to bed early."

The first sentence is advice about one idea. The pattern in this lesson is better when two options are on the table. For gentle advice with one idea, see -는 게 좋다. For obligation, see -아/어야 하다.

Variations and Edge Cases of -(으)ㄴ/는 편이 낫다

A different pattern: -는 편이다. 편 also appears in -(으)ㄴ/는 편이다, which means "tend to be" or "be on the ... side". 저는 일찍 일어나는 편이에요 (jeoneun iljjik ireonaneun pyeonieyo) means "I tend to get up early." Pronunciation: [저는 일찍 이러나는 펴니에요]. It describes a habit, and it does not compare two options. The word 낫다 is what turns it into a comparison.

Negative advice. Put 안 before the verb or use 지 않는: 안 가는 편이 낫겠어요 or 가지 않는 편이 낫겠어요 ("It would be better not to go"). Pronunciation: [안 가는 펴니 낟께써요].

Polite and formal. In formal speech use 낫습니다: 지금 출발하는 편이 낫습니다 ("It is better to leave now"). Pronunciation: [지금 출발하는 펴니 낟씀니다]. In casual speech use 나아: 지금 가는 편이 나아.

Asking about it. 어느 쪽이 나아요? (eoneu jjogi naayo?) means "Which one is better?" Pronunciation: [어느 쪼기 나아요]. A question word does not need a sharp rise at the end.

Spacing. 편 is a dependent noun, so it is written as a separate word: 가는 편이 낫다, not 가는편이 낫다.

What Mistakes Do Learners Make with -(으)ㄴ/는 편이 낫다?

What mistakes do learners make with -(으)ㄴ/는 편이 낫다?
What mistakes do learners make with -(으)ㄴ/는 편이 낫다?
  1. Treating 낫다 as regular. 낫어요 and 낫은 are wrong. The ㅅ drops before a vowel: 나아요, 나은.
  2. Using 는 with an adjective. 조용하는 편이 낫다 is wrong. Say 조용한 편이 낫다.
  3. Using the past modifier for present advice. 간 편이 나아요 looks back and means "going was better". For present advice, say 가는 편이 나아요.
  4. Spelling the word 낮다. 낮아요 means "it is low", not "it is better".
  5. Using it for one idea only. If you are not comparing, 일찍 자는 게 좋아요 is more natural.
  6. Forgetting the space. Write 하는 편이 낫다, with spaces around 편이.

  1. 집에서 쉬는 편이 낫겠어요. (jibeseo swineun pyeoni natgesseoyo.) Pronunciation: [지베서 쉬는 펴니 낟께써요]. 낫겠어요 keeps the judgement soft.
  1. Sample answer: 차라리 걸어가는 편이 나아요. (charari georeoganeun pyeoni naayo.) "It is better to walk instead." Pronunciation: [차라리 거러가는 펴니 나아요]. Any verb with 는 or adjective with (으)ㄴ, then 편이 and a form of 낫다, is right.
