What you'll learn
- Attach -는 게 좋다 to vowel stems, consonant stems and ㄹ-stems.
- Choose between 좋아요, 좋겠어요 and 좋을 거예요 for stronger and softer advice.
- Tell advice (-는 게 좋다) from obligation (-아/어야 하다) and from comparison (-(으)ㄴ/는 편이 낫다).
- Avoid the common errors with the past modifier and with adjectives.
Before you start: you should know the polite ending -아요/어요 and the idea of a verb stem. Time: about 30 minutes. This site places the pattern at level B1, which is an editorial estimate. The official TOPIK information is published at topik.go.kr.
What Does -는 게 좋다 Grammar Mean?
-는 게 좋다 tells the listener which action is a good idea. It is advice, not an order. An English speaker would say "You should get some rest" or "It is better to get some rest". The Korean version puts the idea in a neutral frame: "the act of resting is good."
The pattern has three working parts.
| Part | Form | Job |
|---|---|---|
| Verb + modifier | 자는 | "the act of sleeping" (stem 자 + 는) |
| Dependent noun | 게 | Short for 것이: "the thing" as the subject |
| Adjective | 좋다 | "is good", in the ending you need |
Because 좋다 is an adjective, it is the word that changes for politeness and tense. The verb before it stays the same. That makes the pattern easy to reuse: learn one front part, then swap the ending.
A First Example
Listen to each sentence at normal speed, then slowly.
1. 일찍 자는 게 좋아요. (iljjik janeun ge joayo.) "It is better to go to bed early."
Pronunciation: [일찍 자는 게 조아요]. The ㅎ of 좋 is silent before the vowel of 아요, so it sounds like 조아요.
2. 약을 먹는 게 좋겠어요. (yageul meongneun ge jokesseoyo.) "It would be better to take medicine."
Pronunciation: [야글 멍는 게 조케써요]. The ㄱ of 먹 turns into [ㅇ] before ㄴ. In 좋겠어요, the ㅎ joins the ㄱ of 겠 and makes [케].
Sentence 2 uses 좋겠어요 instead of 좋아요. It is a little milder and more careful, and it is the form people use when they are not sure the listener will agree.
How Do You Form -는 게 좋다?
Take the dictionary form, remove 다, add -는 게, and finish with a form of 좋다. There is one core rule and one exception.
- Core rule: stem + 는 + 게 + 좋아요. Vowel stems and consonant stems use the same 는.
- Exception: if the stem ends in ㄹ, drop the ㄹ before 는. 살다 gives 사는, and 만들다 gives 만드는.
| Dictionary form | Stem | With -는 게 좋다 | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| 자다 (to sleep) | 자 | 자는 게 좋아요 | It is better to sleep. |
| 쉬다 (to rest) | 쉬 | 쉬는 게 좋아요 | It is better to rest. |
| 먹다 (to eat) | 먹 | 먹는 게 좋아요 | It is better to eat. |
| 읽다 (to read) | 읽 | 읽는 게 좋아요 | It is better to read. |
| 만들다 (to make) | 만들 | 만드는 게 좋아요 | It is better to make it. |
| 운동하다 (to exercise) | 운동하 | 운동하는 게 좋아요 | It is better to exercise. |
Stems Ending in a Vowel
A vowel stem takes 는 directly. Nothing contracts.
물을 많이 마시는 게 좋아요. (mureul mani masineun ge joayo.) "It is better to drink a lot of water."
Pronunciation: [무를 마니 마시는 게 조아요]. The ㄹ of 물 and the ㅎ of 많 move to the next syllable, so 물을 sounds like [무를] and 많이 sounds like [마니].
매일 운동하는 게 좋아요. (maeil undonghaneun ge joayo.) "It is better to exercise every day." The stem 운동하 ends in a vowel, so 는 attaches directly. Pronunciation: [매일 운동하는 게 조아요].
병원에 가 보는 게 좋겠어요. (byeongwone ga boneun ge jokesseoyo.) "It would be better to go and see a doctor." The helper 보다 ("try") after -아/어 is a vowel stem and takes 는.
Pronunciation: [병워네 가 보는 게 조케써요].
Stems Ending in a Consonant
A consonant stem also takes 는, and the final consonant often changes sound before the ㄴ.
책을 많이 읽는 게 좋아요. (chaegeul mani ingneun ge joayo.) "It is better to read a lot."
Pronunciation: [채글 마니 잉는 게 조아요]. The ㄱ at the end of 읽 becomes [ㅇ], and the ㄹ is silent.
Do Irregular Verbs and Nouns Change?
Only ㄹ-stems change, because -는 begins with a consonant. The ㅂ, ㄷ and 르 groups change only before vowels.
| Type | Example | With -는 게 좋다 | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| ㄹ-stem | 살다 | 사는 게 좋아요 | ㄹ drops |
| ㅂ-irregular | 돕다 | 돕는 게 좋아요 | Keeps ㅂ: [돔는] |
| ㄷ-irregular | 걷다 | 걷는 게 좋아요 | Keeps ㄷ: [건는] |
| Adjective | 피곤하다 | not used for advice | Needs an action |
Nouns need a verb to carry the idea: use 운동하다 ("to exercise"), not just 운동. With adjectives the form means something else, which is covered under edge cases below.
Worked Example: Building a Sentence with -는 게 좋다
Goal: tell a friend, gently, "It would be better to take medicine."
- Choose the verb. 먹다 (to eat, to take medicine). The stem is 먹.
- Add the modifier. 먹 + 는 = 먹는.
- Add the noun. 먹는 게.
- Choose the ending. 좋다 plus 겠 for a softer feeling, then 어요: 좋겠어요.
- Add the object. 약을 (medicine, with the object particle 을).
Result: 약을 먹는 게 좋겠어요. (yageul meongneun ge jokesseoyo.) "It would be better to take medicine."
Pronunciation: [야글 멍는 게 조케써요].

Which Tenses and Sentence Types Work with -는 게 좋다?
The advice itself stays in the present. The ending on 좋다 changes the strength and the politeness. The table uses 가다 (to go).
| Style or strength | Form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Polite advice | 가는 게 좋아요 | It is better to go. |
| Softer advice | 가는 게 좋겠어요 | It would be better to go. |
| Probable | 가는 게 좋을 거예요 | Going will probably be better. |
| Negative | 안 가는 게 좋아요 | It is better not to go. |
| Negative, written style | 가지 않는 게 좋아요 | It is better not to go. |
| Formal | 가는 게 좋습니다 | It is good to go. (formal) |
| Casual (banmal) | 가는 게 좋아 | It's better to go. (to a friend) |
| Plain written style | 가는 게 좋다 | It is better to go. (essay) |
Here are two of these in sentences.
- 커피를 너무 많이 마시지 않는 게 좋아요. (keopireul neomu mani masiji anneun ge joayo.) = "It is better not to drink too much coffee."
- 일찍 출발하는 게 좋을 거예요. (iljjik chulbalhaneun ge joeul geoyeyo.) = "Leaving early will probably be better."
Pronunciation: [커피를 너무 마니 마시지 안는 게 조아요] and [일찍 출발하는 게 조을꺼예요]. In the second, the ㄱ of 거 is tense after the -(으)ㄹ ending, which is why you hear 꺼.
The past tense of 좋다 is a different pattern, so do not use it to give advice. 일찍 출발한 게 좋았어요 (iljjik chulbalhan ge joasseoyo) means "It was good that I left early". It looks back at something already done. Pronunciation: [일찍 출발한 게 조아써요].
For the polite speech levels behind these endings, see Korean speech levels.
How Is -는 게 좋다 Different from -(으)ㄴ/는 편이 낫다?
Both give advice, and both can be translated as "it is better to". The difference is that -(으)ㄴ/는 편이 낫다 weighs two options and says that one is better than the other. -는 게 좋다 simply calls one action a good idea.
| -는 게 좋다 | -(으)ㄴ/는 편이 낫다 | |
|---|---|---|
| Core meaning | It is good to... | It is better to... (than the other option) |
| Compares options | Not necessarily | Yes, often with 보다 ("than") |
| Strength | Gentle advice | Judgement after weighing choices |
| Example | 일찍 자는 게 좋아요 | 지금 가는 편이 나아요 |
Compare these two sentences.
- 기다리는 것보다 지금 가는 편이 나아요. (gidarineun geotboda jigeum ganeun pyeoni naayo.) = "Going now is better than waiting." Pronunciation: [기다리는 걷뽀다 지금 가는 펴니 나아요].
- 일찍 자는 게 좋아요. (iljjik janeun ge joayo.) = "It is better to go to bed early."
The first sentence has two options, waiting and going, so the comparison pattern fits. The second has only one idea, so -는 게 좋다 is enough. The lesson on -(으)ㄴ/는 편이 낫다 covers the comparison in detail.
A third neighbour is the obligation pattern -아/어야 하다. 약을 먹어야 해요 (yageul meogeoya haeyo) means "You must take medicine." This is stronger, and the listener has no choice. -는 게 좋다 is advice and leaves the choice open.
Variations and Edge Cases of -는 게 좋다
Advice to an older person. Plain 좋아요 can sound too direct for a teacher, a boss or a grandparent. Use the honorific -(으)시- on the verb and the softer 좋겠습니다. 약을 드시는 게 좋겠습니다 (yageul deusineun ge joketseumnida) means "It would be better for you to take your medicine." Here 드시다 is the special honorific verb for "eat" and "take". Pronunciation: [야글 드시는 게 조켇씀니다]. For the full rule, see honorific -(으)시-.
Adjective plus 게 is a noun phrase. When an adjective takes -(으)ㄴ before 게, the meaning changes. 따뜻한 게 좋아요 (ttatteutan ge joayo) means "I like the warm one" or "Warm is good". It is a preference, not advice. Pronunciation: [따뜨탄 게 조아요].
Wishes with 좋겠다. 좋겠다 can also express a hope when it follows -(으)면. 주말이 빨리 오면 좋겠어요 (jumari ppalli omyeon jokesseoyo) means "I hope the weekend comes soon." Here there is no 게 and no advice. Pronunciation: [주마리 빨리 오면 조케써요].
Why 게 is spaced. 게 is short for 것이, and 것 is a dependent noun. Under the National Institute of Korean Language (국립국어원) spelling rules, dependent nouns are written as separate words. Write 자는 게, not 자는게.
What Mistakes Do Learners Make with -는 게 좋다?

- Using the past modifier for advice. 먹은 게 좋아요 means "What I ate is good". Advice needs the present modifier: 먹는 게 좋아요.
- Keeping the ㄹ of an ㄹ-stem. 살는 게 좋아요 is wrong. Say 사는 게 좋아요.
- Treating it as a command. The pattern is gentle advice. For "must", use -아/어야 하다, and for "don't", use -지 마세요.
- Attaching it to a plain adjective. 피곤하는 게 좋아요 is wrong. Pair the idea with an action instead: 푹 쉬는 게 좋아요 ("It is better to rest well").
- Giving direct advice to an elder. 약을 먹는 게 좋아요 can sound blunt to a grandparent. Use 드시는 게 좋겠습니다.
- Forgetting the space. Write 하는 게, not 하는게.

약을 드시는 게 좋겠습니다.
For an elder, use the honorific verb 드시다 and the softer, formal 좋겠습니다.
- Choose the form. "It is better to drink a lot of water." 물을 많이 마시는 게 좋아요 or 물을 많이 마신 게 좋아요?
- Fix the error. 감기에 걸렸어요. 집에서 쉰 게 좋겠어요.
- Translate. "It would be better to leave early."
- Write your own. Write one piece of advice about health using 운동하다 (to exercise) or 자다 (to sleep).
Answer Key
- 물을 많이 마시는 게 좋아요. (mureul mani masineun ge joayo.) Pronunciation: [무를 마니 마시는 게 조아요]. Advice needs the present modifier -는.
- 감기에 걸렸어요. 집에서 쉬는 게 좋겠어요. (gamgie geollyeosseoyo. jibeseo swineun ge jokesseoyo.) Pronunciation: [감기에 걸려써요. 지베서 쉬는 게 조케써요]. The past modifier 쉰 changes the meaning, so use 쉬는.
- 일찍 출발하는 게 좋겠어요. (iljjik chulbalhaneun ge jokesseoyo.) Pronunciation: [일찍 출발하는 게 조케써요]. 좋겠어요 keeps the advice soft.
- Sample answer: 매일 운동하는 게 좋아요. (maeil undonghaneun ge joayo.) "It is better to exercise every day." Pronunciation: [매일 운동하는 게 조아요]. Any action verb with 는 and a form of 좋다 is right.
If a sentence went wrong, check three things: the verb is an action, the modifier is -는, and the ending is a form of 좋다.
What Should You Learn Next?
The natural next lesson is -(으)ㄴ/는 편이 낫다, which compares two options. If you want to invite an opinion instead of giving advice, study -는 게 어때요?. Both belong to the set of Suggestions and Requests, and the full list of B1 patterns is on the Intermediate Grammar page.
This page uses Revised Romanization only as a learning aid. The Hangul is the reference. To remember the idea in one line: stem + 는 + 게 + 좋다 gives gentle advice, and 좋겠어요 makes it softer.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Does -는 게 좋다 Mean in Korean?
-는 게 좋다 means "it is better to..." or "it is good to...". It gives gentle advice, as in 일찍 자는 게 좋아요 ("It is better to go to bed early"). It states a good idea and leaves the listener free to choose.
How Do I Form -는 게 좋다?
Remove 다 from the verb, add 는 게, and end with a form of 좋다, as in 먹다 to 먹는 게 좋아요. Vowel stems and consonant stems take the same 는. A stem ending in ㄹ drops the ㄹ first, so 살다 becomes 사는 게 좋아요.
What Is the Difference between 좋아요 and 좋겠어요?
좋아요 states the advice directly, and 좋겠어요 is milder and more careful. 약을 먹는 게 좋겠어요 ("It would be better to take medicine") sounds softer than 약을 먹는 게 좋아요. Use the softer form when you are unsure the listener will agree.
How Is -는 게 좋다 Different from -아/어야 하다?
-아/어야 하다 expresses obligation: 약을 먹어야 해요 means "You must take medicine". -는 게 좋다 is advice and leaves the choice open. If you tell a friend "You must", you sound like an order, so use -는 게 좋다 for a friendly suggestion.
Can I Use -는 게 좋다 with Adjectives?
Not for advice. The pattern needs an action verb. With an adjective, 게 becomes a noun phrase, so 따뜻한 게 좋아요 means "I like the warm one" or "Warm is good". That is a preference, not a suggestion about what to do.
How Do I Give Advice to an Older Person?
Use the honorific -(으)시- on the verb and the softer 좋겠습니다, as in 약을 드시는 게 좋겠습니다 ("It would be better for you to take your medicine"). The plain 먹는 게 좋아요 can sound blunt to a teacher or a grandparent.
