What you'll learn (about 30 minutes for the first pass, then daily sessions)
- Move through the four stages, using a pass mark to decide when to advance.
- Write 20 dictated syllables with at least 16 correct.
- Check your own handwriting with a four-point rubric.
Before you start: you should know the stroke order of consonants, vowels, double letters and syllable blocks. If not, start with stroke order. You need a pencil, squared paper with 10 mm squares, and audio.
What Is Hangul Writing Practice?
Hangul writing practice is the repeated, structured handwriting of Hangul letters, syllable blocks and words, aimed at remembering the shapes and the order of strokes. It is different from reading practice. In reading, the letters are given and you supply the sound. In writing, you supply the letters from memory or from what you hear.
The goal is not beautiful handwriting. The goal is that each letter comes out in the right order, at a readable size, and that you can write a syllable you have just heard. Calligraphy and style are covered separately in Korean handwriting.
This page belongs to the writing Hangul section. It follows the stroke-order lessons and prepares you for reading Hangul at speed. Printable sheets are on the printable Hangul worksheets page.
Why Write by Hand at All?
Handwriting builds letter memory in a way that recognising letters on a screen does not. When you must produce a letter, you retrieve its shape, its order and its size from memory. Learning researchers call this retrieval practice. Recognising a letter on a chart only asks you to match what you see.
Online and paper practice do different jobs:
| Activity | What it trains | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Handwriting on paper | stroke order, letter shapes, proportions | the first weeks |
| Typing on a keyboard | speed, spelling of words, finding letters | after letters are known |
| Tracing on a tablet | stroke order with instant feedback | when you have no teacher |
Typing is useful, and you will do plenty of it. But typing Korean on a standard keyboard assembles blocks for you, so you never practise the layout of a block. Handwriting is where you learn how a block is built. When you are ready to type, see typing Korean.
Hangul Writing Practice in Four Stages
The four stages run from fully guided to fully from memory. Do not skip ahead, and do not stay on a stage after you pass it. Each stage has an exit criterion, which is the pass mark that tells you to move on.
| Stage | What you do | Exit criterion |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Trace | Trace each letter on a printed or dotted model | Each letter in one pass without lifting the pen in the middle of a stroke |
| 2. Copy | Copy syllables beside a model | 10 of 12 blocks the right shape and order |
| 3. Dictation | Write syllables you hear | 16 of 20 correct |
| 4. Words | Write whole words from a list | 8 of 10 words correct from memory |
Stage 1: Trace
Tracing means following the outline of a letter that is already printed. Trace until you can complete each letter in the correct order without hesitating. Do three tracings for each of the 14 consonants and 10 vowels, saying each stroke number as you go.
Tracing alone does not teach you to recall. It teaches you the movement. So after each letter, cover the model and write the letter once from memory. If you cannot, trace it twice more. Exit when all 24 basic letters come out right from memory at least once.
Stage 2: Copy Blocks
Copying means writing a block beside a model, not on top of it. Start with consonant plus vowel blocks (like 가, 나, 도) and then add blocks with a final consonant (like 각, 만, 곡). Use the proportions from writing whole syllable blocks.
Copy each block three times in a row, then write it a fourth time with the model covered. Work through 12 blocks: 가, 나, 도, 무, 소, 하, 각, 만, 곡, 밤, 왕, 한. Exit when at least 10 of the 12 have the correct letters in the correct order and sit evenly in their squares.
Stage 3: How Does Dictation Work?
Dictation means you hear a syllable and write it without seeing it. A teacher or an audio recording says each syllable, and you write the block. Korean primary schools use the same method for spelling, where it is called 받아쓰기 (badasseugi, "writing what you receive").
The dictation set below is built on minimal contrasts, which are pairs or groups of syllables that differ in one feature. The three-way contrast ㄱ / ㅋ / ㄲ (가 / 카 / 까), ㄷ / ㅌ / ㄸ, ㅂ / ㅍ / ㅃ and ㅈ / ㅊ / ㅉ is hard for English speakers to hear, so each dictation also trains listening. The contrast is explained in aspirated consonants.
The set has 20 syllables:
- 가, 카, 까
- 다, 타, 따
- 바, 파, 빠
- 자, 차, 짜
- 거, 고, 구, 그, 기
- 나, 마, 사
Play them in random order, one at a time, and write each one before you play the next. Replay is allowed once. The pass mark is 16 out of 20. Do the set as a Korean dictation practice exercise for longer drills, or use the Korean dictation tool for instant feedback.

If you score under 16, look at which contrast you miss. Errors usually cluster in one of the four three-way groups, such as ㄱ / ㅋ / ㄲ. Do five more minutes of listening to just that group, then try again.
Stage 4: Write Whole Words
Word writing means writing whole words from a list, first copying, then from memory. The 10 words below were chosen so that every basic consonant and vowel appears at least once. If you can write all ten, you have written all 24 basic letters in real words.
| Word | Meaning | New letters it covers |
|---|---|---|
| 도시 | city | ㄷ ㅅ ㅗ ㅣ |
| 나무 | tree | ㄴ ㅁ ㅏ ㅜ |
| 바지 | trousers | ㅂ ㅈ |
| 라면 | instant noodles | ㄹ ㅕ |
| 야구 | baseball | ㄱ ㅇ ㅑ |
| 우유 | milk | ㅠ |
| 치마 | skirt | ㅊ |
| 커피 | coffee | ㅋ ㅍ ㅓ |
| 토요일 | Saturday | ㅌ ㅛ |
| 하늘 | sky | ㅎ ㅡ |
Check the coverage: the consonants ㄱ ㄴ ㄷ ㄹ ㅁ ㅂ ㅅ ㅇ ㅈ ㅊ ㅋ ㅌ ㅍ ㅎ and the vowels ㅏ ㅑ ㅓ ㅕ ㅗ ㅛ ㅜ ㅠ ㅡ ㅣ all appear. Write each word three times with the model, then twice from memory. Exit when 8 of 10 words are correct from memory.
Which Letters Do Learners Confuse When Writing?
Six pairs cause most of the errors in early writing, and it helps to practise them side by side. Copy each pair three times, alternating, and then say which stroke makes the difference.
| Pair | The difference |
|---|---|
| ㅏ / ㅓ | the tick is on the right in ㅏ and on the left in ㅓ |
| ㅗ / ㅜ | the tick is above the line in ㅗ and below it in ㅜ |
| ㅂ / ㅁ | ㅂ has two verticals that rise above the box, ㅁ is a closed box |
| ㅈ / ㅊ | ㅊ has a short mark above the bar |
| ㄷ / ㅌ | ㅌ has an extra middle bar |
| ㅡ / ㅣ | ㅡ is horizontal and ㅣ is vertical |
Write each pair inside a word too. For example, write 아 and 어, then 오 and 우, and say each one aloud. The mouth movement strengthens the memory of the shape.
What If You Forget How to Write a Letter?
Forgetting a letter in the middle of a session is normal, and the fix is a short loop. First, say the sound of the letter aloud and try to write it. Second, if you cannot, look at the model for no more than three seconds. Third, cover the model and write the letter again. Fourth, return to it later in the same session and write it once more.
This loop works because the effort of trying before you look is the part that builds memory. Looking straight away feels easier but teaches less. Keep a small list of the letters you forgot today, and put them first in tomorrow's warm-up, so the list shrinks as the week goes on.
A second habit helps with the letters that never stick. Write the troublesome letter inside three different words, such as ㅌ in 토요일, 타다 and 아파트, and say each word aloud as you write. A letter met in several words is easier to remember than a letter met alone, because each word gives it a sound and a meaning to hold on to.
How Do You Check Your Own Writing?
Check your writing against four points: stroke order, block proportion, tick length and consistent size. A short rubric makes self-checking faster than judging by eye, because you test each point separately.
| Point | Question to ask | Typical error |
|---|---|---|
| Stroke order | Did I draw the strokes in the standard order? | writing ㅂ bars before verticals |
| Block proportion | Is the final in the bottom third and smaller than the initial? | a final as large as the initial |
| Tick length | Are the ticks of ㅏ ㅓ ㅗ ㅜ about one third of the long line? | ticks so long that ㅏ looks like ㅓ and ㅣ together |
| Consistent size | Are all blocks in a word the same height? | one block taller than its neighbours |
Mark each point with a tick or a cross for every word. If you can film your hand, check the order on playback. If not, write more slowly and say the order aloud. A pass is three points of four on at least eight of ten words. Record your score in a small table at the top of the page, so that you can compare this week with last week.
Expert tip: put your page aside for an hour, then check it again. Errors that were invisible while you wrote become obvious with fresh eyes.
What Is a Good Daily Routine?
A good routine is short and the same every day. The plan below takes 15 minutes, and it is a suggested routine, not a rule. Adjust the minutes to your level.
| Minutes | Activity |
|---|---|
| 0 to 2 | Warm-up: write 3 letters you learned yesterday from memory |
| 2 to 7 | New material: trace or copy the stage you are on |
| 7 to 12 | Dictation or word writing from memory |
| 12 to 15 | Self-check with the rubric, and rewrite the worst two items |
Why daily? Letter memory fades if you leave long gaps. Fifteen minutes a day gives you the repetition without tiring your hand. If you miss a day, do not double the next session. Do the normal 15 minutes.
How many times should you write each letter? In the first session, ten careful repetitions per new letter is a practical target, then three or four from memory on later days. Quality counts more than quantity.
How long until handwriting looks natural? That depends on your time and your starting point, and this site does not give a number. Judge progress by the exit criteria: when you pass stage 4, your letters are accurate, and speed and smoothness will follow with use.
Common misconception: many learners think tracing is enough. Tracing teaches the movement but not recall. Every tracing session should end with a few letters written from memory.
Limit of this page: it teaches print-style handwriting practice for the standard letters. It does not cover cursive speed writing or calligraphy, and the audio clips here are generated and need a specialist's review before you rely on them for pronunciation.
Practice Sets and Answers
Do the sets in order, and cover the answers until you finish.
Set 1. Dictation key. Write down the 20 syllables from the Stage 3 audio. Check against this list: 가, 카, 까, 다, 타, 따, 바, 파, 빠, 자, 차, 짜, 거, 고, 구, 그, 기, 나, 마, 사. Count your correct blocks.
Set 2. Fill the gap. Write the missing block.
- 나 ___ (tree)
- ___ 마 (skirt)
- 하 ___ (sky)
- 바 ___ (trousers)
Set 3. Which letters? Name the basic letters that appear in 커피 but not in 우유.

What is the order of the four writing stages?
Show answer
Trace, copy, write from audio, write whole words
The stages run from fully guided to fully from memory: trace, copy, dictation, then words.
What is the pass mark for the 20-syllable dictation set?
Show answer
16 of 20
The exit criterion for stage 3 is 16 correct out of 20.
Which set is a three-way contrast used in the dictation?
Show answer
가 / 카 / 까
The dictation drills the hard three-way contrasts such as ㄱ / ㅋ / ㄲ.
Which block completes the word for 'tree': 나 ___?
Show answer
무
The word for tree in the list is 나무.
How do you tell ㅈ from ㅊ when writing?
Show answer
ㅊ has a short mark above the bar
ㅊ is ㅈ with a short mark on top; an extra middle bar is what turns ㄷ into ㅌ.
Which basic letters appear in 커피 but not in 우유?
Show answer
ㅋ, ㅍ, ㅓ and ㅣ
커피 is ㅋ + ㅓ and ㅍ + ㅣ; 우유 uses only ㅇ, ㅜ and ㅠ.
Why is tracing alone not enough?
Show answer
It teaches the movement but not recall from memory
Every tracing session should end with letters written from memory, because recall is what builds letter memory.
You forget how to write a letter mid-session. What should you do first?
Show answer
Say its sound aloud and try to write it before looking
Trying before you look is the part that builds memory; then look for no more than three seconds and write it again.
Answers to the Practice
- Set 2: 무 (나무), 치 (치마), 늘 (하늘), 지 (바지).
- Set 3: ㅋ, ㅍ, ㅓ and ㅣ appear in 커피 and not in 우유.
- Set 1 scoring: 16 or more means you pass stage 3. If you scored 12 to 15, repeat the contrasts you missed and try a new random order.
What to Learn Next
After you pass the four stages, move to reading at speed. Continue with the reading Hangul lessons, where you read real words without help. For another look at block shapes, see writing whole syllable blocks.
The point of Hangul writing practice is retrieval: trace to learn the movement, copy to learn the blocks, write from audio to learn the sounds, and write words from memory to prove it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is tracing enough to learn Hangul?
No. Tracing teaches the movement of each stroke but not recall. To remember letters, you need to write them from memory. Use tracing for the first pass, then cover the model and write the letter without it. Stages 3 and 4 of this page are built around writing from audio and from memory.
Should I practise on paper or a tablet?
Start with paper if you can, because pencil on paper gives the most direct feel for stroke order and proportion. A tablet with a stylus is a good second choice and can give instant feedback on order. Typing on a phone or keyboard is useful later, but it does not train letter shapes.
How long until my handwriting looks natural?
This site does not give a fixed number, because it depends on your practice time. Judge your progress by the exit criteria of each stage. When you can pass stage 4, your letters are accurate and you can add speed. Regular short sessions matter more than long, rare ones.
Where can I get printable practice sheets?
Printable grids and tracing rows are on the Hangul worksheets page of this site. Use the 10 mm grid for stages 1 and 2, and a blank grid for stage 3. For stage 4, write the 10 words from this page on any squared paper, three copies and two from memory.
