What is the polite present of 돕다 (to help)?
Show answer
도와요
ㅂ irregular: in 돕다 the ㅂ becomes 오 before 아 (most ㅂ verbs use 우 instead), so 도 + 오 + 아요 gives 도와요.
What is the polite present of 듣다 (to listen)?
Show answer
들어요
ㄷ irregular: ㄷ becomes ㄹ before a vowel, so 듣 + 어요 gives 들어요.
What is the polite present of 낫다 (to recover, to get better)?
Show answer
나아요
ㅅ irregular: the ㅅ drops before a vowel, so 낫 + 아요 gives 나아요 and both vowels stay.
What is the polite present of 모르다 (to not know)?
Show answer
몰라요
르 irregular: 르 becomes ㄹ and an ㄹ is added to the block before it. The vowel before 르 is ㅗ, so the ending is 라: 몰라요.
What is the polite present of 쓰다 (to write)?
Show answer
써요
ㅡ drops before a vowel ending. A one-syllable stem has no earlier vowel to copy, so it takes 어: ㅆ + ㅓ gives 써요.
What is 살다 (to live) + ㅂ니다?
Show answer
삽니다
ㄹ irregular: the stem-final ㄹ drops before ㅂ, ㄴ and ㅅ endings, so 살 + ㅂ니다 gives 삽니다 [삼니다].
What is the polite present of 덥다 (to be hot)?
Show answer
더워요
ㅂ irregular: the ㅂ becomes 우 before a vowel, so 덥 + 어요 gives 더워요.
What is the polite present of 걷다 (to walk)?
Show answer
걸어요
ㄷ irregular: the ㄷ becomes ㄹ before a vowel, so 걷 + 어요 gives 걸어요. (The regular verb 걷다, "to roll up", is a different word.)
What is the polite present of 그렇다 (to be so)?
Show answer
그래요
ㅎ irregular: the ㅎ drops and the vowel changes, so 그렇 + 어요 gives 그래요.
What is the polite present of 빨갛다 (to be red)?
Show answer
빨개요
ㅎ irregular: the ㅎ drops and the vowels ㅏ + ㅏ become ㅐ, so 빨갛 + 아요 gives 빨개요.
What is the polite present of 빠르다 (to be fast)?
Show answer
빨라요
르 irregular: 르 becomes ㄹ and an ㄹ is added to the block before it. The vowel in 빠 is ㅏ, so 라 follows: 빨라요.
What is the polite present of 아프다 (to hurt, to be sick)?
Show answer
아파요
ㅡ drops before a vowel ending. The vowel in 아 is ㅏ, which is bright, so 아 is used: 아파요.
What is the polite present of 예쁘다 (to be pretty)?
Show answer
예뻐요
ㅡ drops before a vowel ending. The vowel in 예 is not bright, so 어 is used: 예뻐요.
What is the polite present of 입다 (to wear)?
Show answer
입어요
입다 is regular, so its ㅂ does not change: 입 + 어요 gives 입어요 [이버요].
What is the polite present of 묻다 (to ask)?
Show answer
물어요
ㄷ irregular: ㄷ becomes ㄹ before a vowel, so 묻 + 어요 gives 물어요. The verb 묻다 "to bury" is regular and gives 묻어요.
What is 만들다 (to make) + ㅂ니다?
Show answer
만듭니다
ㄹ irregular: the stem-final ㄹ drops before ㅂ, so 만들 + ㅂ니다 gives 만듭니다 [만듬니다].
Which adjective is regular: 덥다, 춥다, 쉽다 or 좁다?
Show answer
좁다
좁다 (to be narrow) is regular and gives 좁아요. The other three are ㅂ irregular: 더워요, 추워요, 쉬워요.
Which irregular class does 듣다 (to listen) belong to?
Show answer
ㄷ irregular
The final ㄷ of 듣다 becomes ㄹ before a vowel, which is the mark of the ㄷ irregular.
What is the polite past of 춥다 (to be cold)?
Show answer
추웠어요
ㅂ irregular: the ㅂ becomes 우 and joins the ending, so 춥 + 었어요 gives 추웠어요.
What is the polite present of 부르다 (to call, to sing)?
Show answer
불러요
르 irregular: 르 becomes ㄹ and an ㄹ is added to the block before it. The vowel in 부 is ㅜ, so the ending is 러: 불러요.
Follow these steps. Each one tells you what you should see.
- Read the question and say any Korean text aloud once. You should see four choices.
- Pick one choice by click, tap or by pressing 1, 2, 3 or 4. The Check button turns active.
- Select Check. You see "Correct" or "Not quite", the right answer and a one-sentence reason. Select Next.
- After question 20, read the summary. It shows how many answers were correct in this session and links to the lesson and deck for the questions you missed.
Question order and choice order change every session. Each question gives the English meaning next to the Korean word, because some Korean words share a spelling but follow different rules.
What Does the Korean Irregular Verbs Quiz Cover?
The quiz has 20 questions. Eighteen ask you to build a form from a stem, and one of those checks that you know 입다 is regular. One asks you to find the regular adjective in a set of look-alikes, and one asks you to name a class. The table counts the questions by class.
| Question type | Count | Example |
|---|---|---|
The lesson behind the quiz is korean irregular verbs. School grammar counts the ㅡ and ㄹ changes as regular sound rules, but learner materials teach them with the irregulars, so this site does too.
How Is the Korean Irregular Verbs Quiz Scored?
The quiz gives one point for each of the 20 questions you answer correctly on the first try in the current session. At the end it shows a line such as "You answered 17 of 20 correctly in this session". There is no timer, no streak and no ranking, so you can slow down and say each answer aloud.
The count is not a CEFR level, a TOPIK level or a measure of fluency. It only shows what you recalled today. Your answers and score stay in your browser and disappear when you close the tab, unless you choose to save progress on your own device. Because each question has a single rule behind it, a miss tells you which class to review.
What Should You Know about Irregular Verbs First?
An irregular verb changes its stem in a predictable way when a vowel ending follows. The change is not random: every irregular verb belongs to a class, and each class has one rule. Name the class first, then apply its rule.
| Class | What changes | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ㅂ | ㅂ becomes 우 (or 와 for 돕다) before a vowel | 덥다 → 더워요, 돕다 → 도와요 |
| ㄷ | ㄷ becomes ㄹ before a vowel | 듣다 → 들어요, 걷다 → 걸어요 |
| ㅅ | ㅅ drops before a vowel | 낫다 → 나아요, 짓다 → 지어요 |
| 르 | 르 becomes ㄹ, and a second ㄹ is added | 모르다 → 몰라요, 부르다 → 불러요 |
| ㅡ | ㅡ drops before a vowel | 쓰다 → 써요, 아프다 → 아파요 |
| ㄹ | ㄹ drops before ㅂ, ㄴ, ㅅ | 살다 → 삽니다, 알다 → 아세요 |
| ㅎ | ㅎ drops and the vowel changes | 그렇다 → 그래요, 빨갛다 → 빨개요 |
Which Verbs Only Look Irregular?
Some verbs end in the same letter as an irregular class but stay regular. 입다 (to wear) ends in ㅂ, yet it gives 입어요, not 이워요. 좁다 (to be narrow) gives 좁아요. 씻다 (to wash) and 웃다 (to laugh) end in ㅅ but stay 씻어요 and 웃어요. You learn these by memory. The quiz includes two of them so you practise saying no.
How Do You Pick 아 or 어 after the Change?
The usual vowel rule still applies after the stem changes. In 모르다 the vowel before 르 is ㅗ, a bright vowel, so the ending is 라: 몰라요. In 부르다 the vowel is ㅜ, so the ending is 러: 불러요. The same idea explains 아파요 (ㅏ is bright) and 예뻐요 (ㅖ is not).

Question: What is 살다 (to live) + ㅂ니다?
Choices: 살습니다; 살읍니다; 사니다; 삽니다.
Answer: 삽니다 (samnida). Why: ㄹ irregular: the stem-final ㄹ drops before ㅂ, ㄴ and ㅅ endings, so 살 + ㅂ니다 gives 삽니다 [삼니다].
Tips before You Start
- Name the irregular class first (ㅂ, ㄷ, ㅅ, 르, ㅡ, ㄹ or ㅎ), then apply its single rule.
- Check whether the verb is on the list of regular exceptions: 입다, 좁다, 씻다 and 웃다 are regular.
- Look at the vowel before 르 or ㅡ to choose between 아 and 어.
- Say each answer aloud. The irregular forms are often easier to remember by sound than by spelling.
Which Mistakes Does the Korean Irregular Verbs Quiz Catch?
Four errors cover most misses.
- Treating 입다 (to wear) as a ㅂ irregular and saying 이워요.
- Skipping the ㅡ drop and writing 쓰어요 instead of 써요.
- Keeping the final ㄷ of 듣다 and saying 듣어요 instead of 들어요.
- Forgetting the extra ㄹ of a 르 verb, as in 모라요 instead of 몰라요.

What Does This Quiz Not Do?
The quiz covers the seven classes in the polite present, one polite past and two formal -ㅂ니다 forms. It does not cover rarer classes such as 러 irregulars (이르다 "to reach" and 푸르다) or the 우 irregular (푸다), nor honorific or casual forms of these verbs. Words that share a spelling, such as 걷다 and 묻다, are tested in one sense only, and the question says which. Korean text and pronunciations are generated and were reviewed and signed off by Min-ji Park on 15 October 2026.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which irregular classes does the quiz cover?
It covers the seven classes taught on this site: ㅂ, ㄷ, ㅅ, 르, ㅡ, ㄹ and ㅎ. Each class has two or more questions, except ㅅ, which has one because only a few common verbs belong to it. A class-by-class table sits above the sample questions.
Are regular exceptions like 입다 included?
Yes. Two questions test verbs that look irregular but are regular: 입다 gives 입어요 and 좁다 gives 좁아요. Learners often over-apply the ㅂ rule to them, so the quiz checks it on purpose.
Does it include adjectives such as 덥다?
Yes. Adjectives follow the same rules as verbs, so 덥다, 춥다, 빨갛다, 아프다 and 예쁘다 appear alongside verbs. Each question names the word and its English meaning so you can tell whether it is a verb or an adjective.
Where can I learn the rules first?
Start with the irregular verbs lesson, which explains each class with a rule, a table and audio. Take this quiz afterwards. The reason under every answer repeats the rule in one sentence, so you can check it against the lesson.
Is the quiz free?
Yes. The quiz is free, needs no account and runs in your browser on a phone, tablet or computer. Nothing you answer is uploaded to a server. If you choose to save progress, it is stored on your own device only, and you can delete it in your browser settings at any time.
