Follow these steps. Each one tells you what you should see.
- Read the question and say any Korean text aloud once. You should see four choices.
- Pick one choice by click, tap or by pressing 1, 2, 3 or 4. The Check button turns active.
- Select Check. You see "Correct" or "Not quite", the right answer and a one-sentence reason. Select Next.
- After question 15, read the summary. It shows how many answers were correct in this session and links to the lesson and deck for the questions you missed.
Question order and choice order change every session, so a retake is never the same sequence. Audio is optional. Every question can be answered from the text alone.
What Does the Korean Double Consonants Quiz Cover?

The quiz has 15 questions about the five double consonants, which Korean teachers also call tense or hard consonants (된소리, doensori, or the technical term 경음, gyeongeum). The questions use whole words such as 빵, 딸, 탈 and 꿈, letter pairs and triples, and the idea behind the three-way contrast.
| Tense letter | Plain partner | Aspirated partner | Name | Example word |
|---|---|---|---|---|
The lesson behind the quiz is Korean double consonants. For ear training beyond this quiz, use the Korean listening discrimination tool.
How Is the Korean Double Consonants Quiz Scored?
The quiz gives one point for each of the 15 questions you answer correctly on the first try in the current session. At the end it shows a line such as "You answered 12 of 15 correctly in this session", and the same wording appears in the page data. There is no timer, no streak and no ranking, so you can slow down and say each answer aloud.
The count is not a CEFR level, a TOPIK level or a measure of fluency. It only shows what you recalled today. Your answers and score stay in your browser and disappear when you close the tab, unless you choose to save progress on your own device. Items that depend on hearing the contrast are written so that the text alone gives a fair answer, and the generated audio clips were approved by Min-ji Park on 15 October 2026.
What Should You Know about Double Consonants First?

A double consonant is a tense consonant written by doubling a plain letter: ㄱ becomes ㄲ, ㄷ becomes ㄸ, ㅂ becomes ㅃ, ㅅ becomes ㅆ and ㅈ becomes ㅉ. The doubled shape is a spelling signal for one single sound, not for two sounds. The Korean word 쌍 (ssang) means "pair", which is why the letter names start with it.
How Do Tense Sounds Differ from Plain and Aspirated Ones?
Korean has three ways to say the same place of sound. A plain sound is soft. An aspirated sound has a strong puff of air. A tense sound has a tight throat and no puff. Consider these three words, which differ only in the first consonant:
| Word | First letter | Type | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| 달 (dal) | ㄷ | plain | moon |
| 딸 (ttal) | ㄸ | tense | daughter |
| 탈 (tal) | ㅌ | aspirated | mask |
English has no such three-way contrast, so English speakers often hear all three as "d" or "t". The palm test helps: hold a hand in front of your mouth. You should feel a clear puff for 탈, almost nothing for 딸 and a very light one for 달. Linguists measure this with voice onset time (VOT), the gap between the release of the consonant and the start of the vowel, but a learner needs only the palm test.
Where Do Double Consonants Appear?
They are common. They begin everyday words such as 빵 (bread), 아빠 (dad) and 꿈 (dream). The double ㅆ is also a grammar sound: its ㅆ is part of the past-tense marker 았/었, as in 갔어요 (I went). Only ㄲ and ㅆ can also end a block, as in 밖 (outside) and 갔. In the final position they sound like ㄱ and ㄷ, a topic covered in the batchim quiz.

Tips before You Start
- Use the palm test: no breath for tense, a clear breath for aspirated.
- Study letters in triples (ㄱ ㅋ ㄲ, ㄷ ㅌ ㄸ, ㅂ ㅍ ㅃ, ㅈ ㅊ ㅉ) rather than one by one.
- Take the audio version of the questions after you have studied the deck, not before.
- If you cannot hear the difference yet, answer by spelling; hearing improves with repeated listening.
Which Mistakes Does the Korean Double Consonants Quiz Catch?

The quiz is built to catch these errors.
- Choosing the aspirated letter when the tense one is meant, for example ㅌ for ㄸ.
- Counting ㅎ as having a tense partner; it has none.
- Reading a double letter as two syllables, such as 까치 as three blocks.
- Expecting a puff of air after ㅃ or ㄲ.

What Does This Quiz Not Do?
The quiz cannot judge your pronunciation, and it cannot train your ear alone, because listening skill needs many hours of audio. Pronunciation of tense sounds varies a little between speakers and regions. Listening items use clips approved by Min-ji Park on 15 October 2026. All Korean text in the questions and answers was generated and is waiting for review by a Korean reviewer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which letters count as double consonants?
Five letters count: ㄲ, ㄸ, ㅃ, ㅆ and ㅉ. They are also called tense or hard consonants. The Korean alphabet has 14 basic consonants and these 5 doubles, which makes 19. Letters with an extra stroke, such as ㅋ or ㅍ, are aspirated single letters, not doubles.
Can I take this without audio?
Yes. Every question works from text, and the replay button is optional. Audio never plays by itself. Clips are generated and were approved by Min-ji Park on 15 October 2026; press a button to hear them. If you can hear the differences, use the clips to check your answer after you choose.
Does the quiz include whole words?
Yes. Seven questions use words such as 빵, 딸, 탈, 꿈, 싸다, 까치 and 갔어요. Each word is shown in Hangul with its meaning in the reason. Words are chosen from everyday beginner vocabulary, so the practice carries over into reading.
What if I cannot hear the difference yet?
That is normal for English speakers, because English does not use this contrast. Learn the spelling first, then listen to minimal pairs such as 달, 딸 and 탈 daily for a few weeks. The listening tool linked on this page is designed for this.
Is the quiz free?
Yes. The quiz is free, needs no account and runs in your browser on a phone, tablet or computer. Nothing you answer is uploaded to a server. If you choose to save progress, it is stored on your own device only, and you can delete it in the settings at any time.
