How to Use the Korean GPA Calculator
Choose the institution’s grade profile, enter the current course’s credits and grade, and calculate. Add the next course using the row controls. Only one course editor is needed on a phone; every attempt remains in the ledger. Open the course details to record its semester, category, assessment type and origin. Those details matter whenever pass/fail, exchange or repeat rules change whether a contribution belongs in the GPA.
Before copying a result, review five decisions: the grade map, the credits, the assessment label, the included attempts and the applicable policy scope. The ledger shows the contribution of each course rather than only a final average. A useful result identifies its profile version, quality-point numerator, GPA-bearing denominator and exclusions. When a policy fact is unresolved, the explanation preserves that uncertainty instead of quietly substituting a convenient default.
The first screen starts without a fabricated average. Load the synthetic example deliberately if you want to learn the workflow before entering personal records. Use Plan for a target, and More for prior points, scenarios, imports, repeats, conversion instructions and reports. The supporting guide explains how to resolve a question the controls cannot answer, especially when your programme or receiving institution applies a rule beyond the grade map.
Choose the Institution, Programme and Cohort
Read the transcript header and relevant academic regulations. A university name alone does not prove that every campus, medical programme, graduate department or historical entry cohort uses the same exclusions and repeat process. Attach the actual programme and cohort to your private notes. If your transcript differs from the available profile, use the documented custom workflow and ask the registrar about the disputed condition before relying on the result.
Review Contributions before Saving a Result
Compare the ledger against the original record, including rows excluded from GPA. An exclusion is not a deletion from history. Check that each identifier represents one actual attempt, that repeated courses have explicit equivalence evidence, and that an imported prior semester is not also included in a prior aggregate summary. Saving the calculation is useful only after these source decisions are clear.
Which GPA Scale Does a Korean University Use?

There is no single Korean university GPA scale that can safely be applied to every transcript. The three available source-backed maps distinguish SNU and Yonsei, whose cited maps reach 4.3, from SKKU, whose cited map reaches 4.5. These factual maps answer the grade-point question. Programme rounding, repeat applicability, medicine exceptions and historical transcript conventions can still require separate confirmation.
The 4.3 and 4.5 Grade-Point Maps
| Grade | SNU/Yonsei 4.3 map | SKKU 4.5 map |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 4.3 | 4.5 |
| A0 / A | A0: 4.0 | A: 4.0 |
| A− | 3.7 | Not in this map |
| B+ | 3.3 | 3.5 |
| B0 / B | B0: 3.0 | B: 3.0 |
| B− | 2.7 | Not in this map |
| C+ | 2.3 | 2.5 |
| C0 / C | C0: 2.0 | C: 2.0 |
| D+ | 1.3 | 1.5 |
| D0 / D | D0: 1.0 | D: 1.0 |
| F, letter-assessed | 0 | 0 |
The table is an independently written factual comparison, not a copied transcript template. Its sources are SNU’s grading page, Yonsei’s grading page and SKKU’s article 48. A missing minus grade is not permission to map it automatically to the neighboring letter. Preserve the token and correct the profile or grade explicitly.
How Do Credits Change the Weighted GPA?

Multiply each included course’s grade points by its GPA-bearing credits, add those contributions, then divide by the included credits. In notation, GPA equals Σ(points × credits) divided by Σ(included credits). The numerator is often called quality points. A three-credit course affects the result more than a one-credit course with the same letter, so the unweighted average of letters is usually the wrong operation.
A Three-Credit a+ and a Two-Credit B0
On the 4.3 map, A+ contributes 4.3 × 3 = 12.9 quality points. B0 contributes 3.0 × 2 = 6.0. The numerator is 18.9 and the denominator is five, producing 3.78. An unweighted average of 4.3 and 3.0 would be 3.65; it ignores the fact that the higher grade carries more credits in this example.
Equal weighting is available for an explicitly chosen custom comparison. It gives each row the same weight and must not silently replace the institution’s credit system. Numeric points and percentages likewise require a custom profile with its own maximum and method. Honors or AP-style bonuses belong to that custom calculation, not to a Korean university profile merely because another calculator offers them.
What Counts toward GPA and Earned Credits?

GPA-bearing credits and earned degree credits describe different things. A failed letter-graded course may contribute attempted credits to the GPA denominator while earning no degree credit. A pass-only course may earn degree credit while contributing neither points nor credits to GPA. Showing both totals prevents the misleading label passed credits from being used for a denominator that includes failures.
Why Can the Same F Change the Denominator?
Consider SKKU A in a three-credit letter course and F in a two-credit course. If F is letter-assessed, the numerator is twelve and the denominator is five, giving 2.40. If the F belongs to a designated P/F-assessed course under the cited provision, that row is excluded from GPA and the result is twelve divided by three, or 4.00. Both examples earn three credits, but their GPA denominators differ.
The assessment selector therefore asks a substantive question. When the type is unknown, the calculator does not infer it from the F token. Administrative grades also need their source-specific meanings. A pass, satisfactory marker, withdrawal, erased attempt and incomplete are not interchangeable. In particular, an incomplete remains unresolved until the actual final status is known; elapsed calendar time alone cannot supply the institution’s official final grade.
Semester, Yearly and Cumulative Grade Views

Group views let you examine a semester, academic year, category or custom label without discarding the full record. Keep the original scope attached to the result. A seasonal term can have a distinct semester treatment while entering an annual total. That is a policy question, not a reason to average semester GPAs without their denominators. Course-level points and credits remain the reliable ingredients for combining groups.
A Prior Numerator and New Semester
Suppose the exact prior numerator is 180 and its GPA-bearing denominator is sixty. Add the synthetic semester above, with 18.9 points and five credits. The cumulative numerator becomes 198.9 and the denominator becomes sixty-five. Their quotient is 3.06. The previous GPA of 3.00 and new semester GPA of 3.78 do not have equal influence because their credit totals are very different.
Prefer exact prior quality points when the transcript supplies them. Enter prior earned credits separately if you also need a degree-credit total. Do not use earned credits as the GPA denominator. If you import all prior courses, leave the overlapping prior aggregate out; including both would count the same work twice. The overlap control blocks a calculation until you choose which source of prior information to use.
How Are Repeated Courses Treated?
A repeat engine needs course identity and policy scope. Two courses with the same title can be different courses; two attempts with slightly different titles may be officially equivalent. Enter the institution course ID, repeat group and equivalence evidence before selecting replacement. Keep the old attempt visible in the ledger, because cumulative treatment and the original semester record answer different questions.
A custom latest-attempt rule excludes earlier attempts from the selected cumulative calculation. A best-attempt rule selects a different record. Both are mechanical options that require confirmation; neither is a universal Korean rule. A latest replacement from A to F can reduce the cumulative GPA and remove earned credit for that group. Automatically choosing the most flattering attempt would conceal that outcome.
Yonsei’s applicable cohort and authorized replacement opportunity are additional controls. An opportunity can affect whether the prior grade is erased and can impose an A0 ceiling on the new result. A repeat without using that opportunity can leave both attempts in the GPA. Historical department-specific rules must retain their historical scope. Confirm the current programme’s replacement allowance and degree-credit treatment with the registrar rather than treating a saved preset as institutional approval.
When Do Transfer or Exchange Grades Enter GPA?
The originating institution and exchange category matter independently of the letter. A home course, domestic exchange course, overseas exchange course and transfer credit can follow different inclusion rules. Preserve those labels when importing. Receiving degree credit does not necessarily mean the transferred grade enters this university’s GPA. Ask about the actual transcript convention when a record combines accepted credits with an excluded numeric grade.
What Average Is Needed to Reach a Target GPA?

The target planner solves the weighted equation instead of guessing a future average. Given current quality points N, current GPA credits D, remaining credits R and target T, the required remaining average is [T × (D + R) − N] divided by R. The best and worst final averages use the selected maximum and minimum. No remaining credits means the inverse solve is unavailable, while the current result remains meaningful.
A Target That Exceeds the Available Scale
Starting with 180 points over sixty credits means a current GPA of 3.00. To reach 3.50 after another thirty credits, the required remaining average is 4.50. That exactly reaches a 4.5 maximum but exceeds a 4.3 maximum. On a 4.3 scale, even maximum grades produce 309 points over ninety credits, about 3.43. A calculator should explain the impossibility rather than suggest a grade outside the map.
Available grade points are discrete. With two three-credit courses allowing only zero or four points, a desired future numerator of eighteen has no exact combination: the possible totals are zero, twelve and twenty-four. A continuous required average is therefore not proof of an actual grade combination. The discrete search distinguishes an exact match from the nearest available total, and a bounded search reports its limit instead of inventing a feasible set.
Rounding, Precision and Incomplete Records
The exact rational result is retained until display. The default tool display uses half-up rounding to two decimals, with institutional rounding marked unresolved where current scope has not been established. For example, 3.151 displays as 3.15 under half-up, while ceiling would display 3.16. A source phrase such as rounded up should not be treated as proof that every value uses ceiling.
A prior rounded GPA cannot recover exact historical points. Under a custom half-up, two-decimal convention, a displayed 3.16 corresponds to an underlying interval from 3.155 inclusive to 3.165 exclusive. Over ten credits, the possible prior numerator spans 31.55 to 31.65. Under truncation, displayed 3.15 corresponds to an interval beginning at 3.15. These intervals are assumptions to carry forward, not a registrar-certified reconstruction.
Unknown rounding, incomplete courses and uncertain assessment labels should remain visible in the report. A precise-looking two-decimal result can still rest on provisional input. Use the exact ledger to separate mathematical precision from source certainty, and obtain the actual final status before treating an unfinished record as a completed transcript.
Can Korean GPA Be Converted to a US 4.0 Scale?
There is no universal official conversion derived solely from the maximum. A receiving programme may require a course-by-course map, its own evaluation service, an authenticated institutional conversion or the original transcript without conversion. Confirm its current instruction before selecting a method. The custom proportional option is labeled mathematical rescaling, so its output cannot be mistaken for an accepted US equivalence.
For example, explicit rescaling of 3.75 out of 4.5 to a maximum of four gives ten thirds, about 3.33. A receiving course map can produce a different result from the same source record. Mapping a three-credit A+ to four and a three-credit B+ to 3.3 gives 21.9 quality points over six credits, or 3.65. The difference is expected because the methods ask different questions.
What Do UK, ECTS and Credit Conversions Require?
UK classifications, ECTS grade outcomes and percentile ranks can require degree structure, mark bands or a reference distribution. A summary GPA cannot reconstruct those missing facts. Credit conversion is a separate workload question: an explicitly documented policy might assign two ECTS per Korean credit, but that hypothetical factor is not supplied as a universal default. Record the receiving source, effective year and accepted course types with any custom mapping.
Private Imports, Scenarios and Reports
Paste credits and grade columns using an explicitly selected separator. In Spanish format, a decimal comma belongs inside the numeric value, so a tab or semicolon avoids ambiguous comma-separated cells. The preview retains the original source line and asks for correction and confirmation. An unknown letter or repeated attempt identifier is an issue to resolve, not a row to silently discard to make the import succeed.
Why Should Imported Grades Be Checked Individually?
A source file can contain totals, headings, withdrawals and non-grade identifiers alongside actual attempts. Check every interpreted credit and grade against the original. This tool’s local text import does not perform remote AI transcript extraction. Native text PDFs can be opened locally with selected pages and explicit text-column mapping. Review the original cells and page coordinates, correct each credit and grade, and confirm every row before importing. Scanned-page OCR and local model interpretation require their separate engines; manual input remains available immediately. Never interpret a model’s suggested course translation as approval of the grade or the institution policy.
Preserve a baseline before editing a what-if branch. Changing the example’s two-credit B0 to A0 raises its GPA from 3.78 to 4.18, a difference of 0.40, while the original remains unchanged. Name the scenario, export a backup or choose local saving explicitly. Reports retain all attempts, exclusions, source versions and the exact calculation. Public report publication and account lookup are separate services, not an implied consequence of copying a result.
Academic Korean Terms beside Your Transcript
Academic labels are easier to interpret when the quantity is explicit. 학점 concerns course credits in context; 취득학점 refers to earned credits; 신청학점 concerns registered credits. 평점 is a course’s grade-point value, while 평점평균 describes a grade-point average. 재수강 marks a repeated course, and 성적증명서 identifies an academic transcript. Read the whole field rather than translating every occurrence of credits into one number.
Keep the Korean token beside the English or Spanish explanation so you can compare it with the original record. A practical question is whether a displayed credit total is registered, attempted, earned or included in the GPA. Those distinctions explain why two totals on the same transcript can differ without an arithmetic mistake. The calculator uses plain labels for its own totals and preserves your source token in an import audit.
Source Versions and Safe Corrections
A saved scenario should retain the policy version that produced its original result. Recalculating it with a newer grade map can be useful, but should be a deliberate comparison rather than an invisible rewrite of history. Record which condition changed, which attempts were affected and whether the change applies to your actual cohort. A current source check is distinct from a registrar’s approval of your personal transcript.
The three initial profiles contain independently expressed grade-map facts checked on 11 October 2026. They do not form a complete global credential catalogue. An institution not listed is an unsupported context until its actual source is supplied and confirmed. A custom map makes an explicit calculation possible, while leaving the authority of that map with the user-supplied policy. This distinction keeps broad numerical flexibility from becoming a false claim of institutional coverage.
When reporting a mismatch, provide the profile version, disputed rule, source URL and a synthetic or redacted example. A real student number, full name or original transcript is unnecessary for demonstrating a denominator problem. Include the assessment type and course origin: those often explain why an apparently identical letter contributes differently. Recheck a corrected example through the exact ledger before replacing a saved planning result.
Programme Criteria and Official Documents
An application criterion is one condition among many. A dated academic threshold does not establish nationality, degree, age, language, document authentication or final selection. For a programme with alternative academic branches, keep those branches distinct. A GPA branch that is not met can coexist with an unknown percentile or class-rank branch; that combination is not a justified overall ineligible verdict.
The GKS-G 2026 academic reference includes separate scale-specific thresholds and percentile or rank alternatives. Confirm the current programme guide and its accepted documentation before using the comparison. A future application cycle needs its own source date and policy version. The tool’s user-supplied condition checklist records evidence and unresolved items, while original transcripts and any required institutional confirmation remain the receiving programme’s decision.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Calculator Recover Exact Prior Grade Points from a Rounded GPA?
No. Rounding loses information. A displayed prior GPA can correspond to several exact quality-point totals. Enter the transcript’s exact numerator when available. Otherwise choose an explicit rounding assumption and retain the resulting interval as an estimate; do not describe reconstructed points as an official historical total.
Does Changing the Interface Language Alter University Rules?
No. Language changes labels and number formatting, while the selected institution and policy version determine the calculation. Spanish decimal commas do not imply a ten-point scale. Confirm the actual scale, assessment type and transcript convention independently, and use the receiving institution’s instructions for any conversion.
What Happens When a Transcript Uses A0 and the Import Contains A?
Check the selected profile before accepting the import. A0 and A are not automatically interchangeable across institutions. SNU uses A0 in its mapped grades, while SKKU’s cited map uses A. Keep the original cell and correct the interpreted value explicitly when the transcript convention is confirmed.
Will Deleting a Locally Saved Scenario Delete a Published Report?
Local deletion removes the browser copy, not a separately published document. This calculator does not connect to a report-hosting account. If you deliberately publish an exported report elsewhere, use that service’s revoke or delete controls and check whether earlier downloaded copies remain accessible to their recipients.
Can a Course with Zero Credits Still Appear in the Report?
Yes. A zero-credit row can remain visible with its grade, assessment type and source details while contributing no quality points or GPA-bearing credits. Retaining it helps explain the record. It does not create a zero GPA: an entirely zero denominator means no GPA-bearing credits are available.
Check a Korean GPA Calculator Result before Applying
Check the Korean GPA calculator profile, assessment types, exclusions, exact points and denominator against your transcript. Confirm the receiving programme’s current instructions before submitting a converted result. For language support, use university and major vocabulary, exam and grade vocabulary and study-abroad vocabulary. Review fractions and decimals to understand exact averages. Keep TOPIK requirements separate from academic GPA, and explore the Korean learning tools for related practice. Send redacted policy corrections through contact.
