Dwae vs Doe Korean: How to Choose 돼요 or 되요

Dwae vs doe Korean comes down to one fact: 돼 is the contracted form of 되어, so you write 돼 only where an ending starting with 어 has joined the stem 되. That gives 돼요, 됐어요 and 돼서, while consonant endings keep 되: 되고, 되면, 됩니다. The spelling 되요 is not standard.

What you'll learn

  • Choose 되 or 돼 correctly in a new sentence with three quick tests.
  • Spell 되다 in the polite present (돼요), past (됐어요) and formal (됩니다) forms.
  • Explain in one sentence why 되요 and 됬어요 are spelling errors.
  • Apply the same rule to compounds such as 시작되다 and to the polite verb 뵈다 (봬요).

Prerequisites: you know how 오 + 아 contracts to 와 in verbs such as 보다 → 봐요, taught in ㅘ contraction. Time: about 20 minutes.

The first section gives the answer to the question in the title.

Is It 돼요 or 되요?

The correct spelling is 돼요 (dwaeyo). 되다 (doeda) means "to become" or "to be OK", and its polite present is built from 되 + 어요 = 되어요, which contracts to 돼요. The Hangul Orthography (한글 맞춤법) of the National Institute of Korean Language (국립국어원) says in Article 35 that when ㅚ is followed by 어, the contracted ㅙ may be written, so 되어 becomes 돼 and 되었다 becomes 됐다.

Both the full form 되어요 and the contracted 돼요 are correct. 되요 is neither: it is the stem 되 with 요 attached directly, and that leaves out the 어 that every polite present ending needs. The polite present ending is always 아요 or 어요, never a bare 요 on the stem. The next section shows the difference between the two syllables.

What Is the Difference between 되 and 돼?

되 is the stem of 되다, and 돼 is that stem fused with the ending 어. Think of 돼 as a two-part package, 되 + 어, squeezed into one block. Wherever the package fits, 돼 is right; wherever only the stem belongs, 되 is right.

Syllable What it contains Vowel Used before Examples
되 the stem only ㅚ consonant endings, 으 endings, ㅂ니다 되고, 되면, 되는, 될, 됩니다, 되세요
돼 stem + 어 ㅙ (ㅗ + ㅐ) 요, 서, 도, 야, past 었 → ㅆ 돼요, 돼서, 돼도, 돼야, 됐어요

The contraction works like the ㅘ contraction you have already seen: ㅗ + ㅏ → ㅘ in 봐요, and ㅚ + ㅓ → ㅙ in 돼요. In both, the stem vowel and the ending vowel merge into one syllable.

Why the Two Sound Alike

되 and 돼 sound nearly the same for most speakers, which is the main reason the spelling is confused. The Standard Pronunciation Rules (표준 발음법) allow ㅚ to be pronounced as a diphthong close to [we], and ㅙ is [wɛ]. The standard pronunciation rules (Article 4) still list ㅐ and ㅔ as two vowels, but most Seoul speakers today pronounce them the same, so [we] and [wɛ] collapse into one sound. The result: 돼요 and the misspelled 되요 sound identical, and only the grammar can tell you which one to write.

This is also why native speakers make the error. A spelling choice that cannot be heard has to be checked, and the next section gives three ways to check it.

Dwae vs Doe Korean: Three Tests to Choose 되 or 돼

Three tests settle any dwae vs doe Korean question. Each works alone, and together they never disagree. Use the first for speed, the second to understand why, and the third when you are unsure.

Test 1: Swap in 하 or 해

Replace 되 or 돼 with 하 or 해 and see which one sounds right. If 하 fits, write 되. If 해 fits, write 돼. This works because 하다 has the same structure: 하 is its stem and 해 is its stem + 여 contraction, explained in 하다 to 해요.

Sentence slot Try 하 / 해 Result
의사가 ( )요. 해요, not 하요 의사가 돼요.
의사가 ( )고 싶어요. 하고, not 해고 의사가 되고 싶어요.
가도 ( )요? 해요 가도 돼요?
내일 ( )면 좋겠어요. 하면 내일 되면 좋겠어요.
어제 ( )ㅆ어요. 했어요 어제 됐어요.

The swap is a shortcut, not a grammar rule: 하 and 되 are unrelated verbs that happen to share the pattern. It works for every ending a learner meets at A1 and A2.

Test 2: Look at the Ending

Ask whether the ending that follows begins with 아/어. The 어-type endings are 어요 (polite present), 어서 (because/and then), 어도 (even if), 어야 (must) and 었 (past). Every one of them produces 돼: 돼요, 돼서, 돼도, 돼야, 됐어요. Every other ending (고, 면, 지만, 는, ㄴ, ㄹ, 니까, 세요, ㅂ니다) leaves 되 alone.

Test 3: Expand 돼 to 되어

Write the full form 되어 in place of 돼 and read the result. If 되어 makes a real word, 돼 is correct: 되어요, 되어서, 되었어요 are all real. If it does not, the stem 되 is correct: 되어고, 되어면 and 되어는 are not words, so the forms are 되고, 되면 and 되는.

Worked Example: 안 돼요

To spell "No, you can't" (안 돼요), run the tests on the last word.

  1. Find the verb. 안 + 되다, "not be OK".
  2. Test 1. "안 하요" is wrong and "안 해요" is right, so the spelling uses 돼.
  3. Test 2. The ending is the polite present 어요, an 어-type ending, so the spelling uses 돼.
  4. Test 3. 안 되어요 is a real (if formal-looking) form, so 돼 is correct.
  5. Write it. 안 돼요.

You'll know it worked when all three tests point the same way. 안 돼요 is a negation with 안, the short negator placed before the verb; the wider pattern is in Korean negation. The next section lists every form of 되다 you need at this level.

What Are the Forms of 되다?

The forms of 되다 split cleanly by ending: forms with an 어-type ending use 돼, and all other forms keep 되. The table shows the six core slots and the most common connectives.

Slot Form Spoken RR (aid) 되 or 돼 Example
Polite present 돼요 [돼요] dwaeyo 돼 (어요) 의사가 돼요. I'm becoming a doctor.
Polite past 됐어요 [돼써요] dwaesseoyo 돼 (었어요) 봄이 됐어요. It has become spring.
Polite future 될 거예요 [될꺼예요] doel geoyeyo 되 (ㄹ 거예요) 괜찮을 거예요, 잘될 거예요. It'll be fine.
Formal present 됩니다 [됨니다] doemnida 되 (ㅂ니다) 사진 촬영이 안 됩니다. Photos are not allowed.
Honorific polite 되세요 [되세요] doeseyo 되 (세요) 좋은 엄마가 되세요. Become a good mother.
Casual present 돼 [돼] dwae 돼 (어) 안 돼! No!
"and" 되고 [되고] doego 되 의사가 되고 싶어요.
"if" 되면 [되면] doemyeon 되 시간이 되면 와요. Come if you have time.
"because/so" 돼서 [돼서] dwaeseo 돼 (어서) 일이 잘돼서 기뻐요.
"must" 돼야 [돼야] dwaeya 돼 (어야) 열 살이 돼야 해요.
Modifier (present) 되는 [되는] doeneun 되 의사가 되는 꿈 (the dream of becoming a doctor)
Modifier (past) 된 [된] doen 되 다 된 밥

  • Endings starting with 어 merge with 되 into 돼.
  • All other endings keep 되.

One form looks like a trap. 되세요 ends in 요 but uses 되, because its ending is 세요, not 어요. Test 1 confirms it: 하세요, not 해세요. The past tense in all speech levels, including 됐습니다 and 됐어, is covered in past tense conjugation. The next section looks at the misspellings themselves.

Why Is 되요 an Error?

되요 is an error because it skips the 어 ending. A polite present form is always stem + 아요/어요, and 되 + 어요 must surface as 되어요 or 돼요. Writing 되요 attaches 요 straight to the stem, which Korean grammar does not allow for any verb.

The error is frequent in informal native writing, from text messages to comments, because 되요 and 돼요 sound the same. Frequency does not make it standard. Article 35 of the Hangul Orthography gives only the full 되어 and its contraction 돼; the spelling 되요 has no basis in it.

Seven Minimal Pairs

The misspellings follow a pattern: either 돼 appears where only the stem belongs, or 되 appears where 어 has merged.

Correct Misspelling Why
안 돼요 안 되요 어요 ending: needs 돼
됐어요 됬어요 past 었 merges: 되 + 었 = 됐
돼서 되서 어서 ending: needs 돼
돼도 되도 어도 ending: needs 돼
되고 돼고 고 is a consonant ending: stem only
되면 돼면 면 is a consonant ending: stem only
되는 돼는 는 is a consonant ending: stem only

The past-tense error 됬 deserves special attention. 됬 is not a possible contraction: 되 + 었 merges into 됐 (ㅙ + ㅆ), just as 하 + 였 gives 했. If you would write 했, write 됐.

Once the spelling is clear, the next question is what the word actually means.

What Does 되다 Mean?

되다 has three core meanings for learners: "to become", "to be OK or allowed" and "to work or go well". The spelling rule is the same for every meaning, so the choice of 되 or 돼 never depends on the sense.

Meaning Pattern Example English
become N이/가 되다 의사가 됐어요. I became a doctor.
be allowed V-아/어도 되다 여기 앉아도 돼요? May I sit here?
be OK / enough 되다 alone 됐어요. That's fine. / No, thanks.
work, function 잘 되다 / 안 되다 인터넷이 잘 안 돼요. The internet isn't working well.
be ready, done 다 되다 밥이 다 됐어요. The rice is ready.

Two grammar points help. First, the thing someone becomes takes 이/가, not 을/를: 의사가 돼요, not 의사를 돼요. Second, 됐어요 said with a flat tone often means "No, thank you" or "Never mind", for example when someone offers more food. The pairs of verbs built with 하다 and 되다, such as 시작하다 and 시작되다, are compared in 하다 vs 되다. The next section applies the spelling rule to those compounds.

How Do Compounds with 되다 Change?

Compounds that end in 되다 follow the same rule as 되다 itself. Many of them are passive partners of 하다 verbs: 사용하다 ("to use") becomes 사용되다 ("to be used"). Only the last syllable changes, and it changes exactly like 되다.

Dictionary form Meaning Polite present Past "and" form
시작되다 to begin (be started) 시작돼요 시작됐어요 시작되고
사용되다 to be used 사용돼요 사용됐어요 사용되고
완성되다 to be completed 완성돼요 완성됐어요 완성되고
걱정되다 to be worried 걱정돼요 걱정됐어요 걱정되고
잘되다 to go well 잘돼요 잘됐어요 잘되고

The phrase 잘됐어요 ("That's great, I'm glad it worked out") is one of the most common reactions to good news. Spell it with 됐, like every past form of 되다.

안 돼요 Versus 안됐어요

Spacing changes the meaning in one important pair. 안 돼요, with a space, is 안 + 되다: "it's not allowed" or "it doesn't work". 안됐어요, written as one word, comes from the adjective 안되다, "to be pitiful", and means "That's a shame" or "I feel sorry for them".

Form Built from Meaning
안 돼요. 안 + 되다 No, you can't. / It doesn't work.
정말 안됐어요. 안되다 (adjective) That's really too bad.

The 되/돼 rule is the same in both, so the spelling of the last syllable never changes. The next section shows one more verb that hides the same contraction.

뵈다, the humble verb for "to see (someone respected)", follows exactly the same pattern as 되다. Its stem 뵈 also has the vowel ㅚ, so 뵈 + 어요 contracts to 봬요. The phrase 내일 봬요, "See you tomorrow", used with teachers, bosses or older people, is therefore spelled with 봬, not 뵈.

Correct Misspelling Test 1 check
내일 봬요. 내일 뵈요. 해요 fits, so 봬
다음에 뵐게요. 다음에 봴게요. 할게요 fits, so 뵈

The formal greeting 처음 뵙겠습니다 ("Nice to meet you") uses a related verb, 뵙다, and is always written with 뵙. Every stem with ㅚ that takes 어 behaves this way, so the rule you learned for 되다 covers 뵈다 at no extra cost.

What Mistakes Do Learners Make with 되 and 돼?

Learners make four predictable mistakes with 되 and 돼, and native writers make the first two as well.

Learners often assume 되요 is a casual spelling of 돼요. Actually 되요 is a misspelling at every level; the casual form of 돼요 is 돼, without 요. Fix: run Test 1 (해요 → 돼요).

Learners often assume any form that ends in 요 needs 돼. Actually 되세요 and 될게요 keep 되, because their endings (세요, ㄹ게요) do not start with 어. Fix: look at the ending, not at the 요.

Learners often write 됬어요 for the past. Actually 되 + 었 can only contract to 됐. Fix: compare with 했어요.

Learners often put 을/를 on the result of 되다. Actually the result takes 이/가: 가수가 되고 싶어요, "I want to become a singer."

An honest limit: the tests cover the forms used at A1 to B1. Quoted commands are the one advanced case where learners hesitate: the direct command "부자 돼라!" ("Become rich!") is 되 + 어라, while the quoted form 부자가 되라고 했어요 uses the quotation ending 라고 on the bare stem. Treat it as a reading point for now.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is 안 돼요 spelled with 돼? 안 돼요 is spelled with 돼 because its last word is 되다 plus the polite ending 어요. 되 + 어요 gives 되어요, which contracts to 돼요. The 안 in front is the short negator and does not affect the spelling. The phrase means "No, you can't" or "It doesn't work."

What is the past tense of 되다? The polite past of 되다 is 됐어요, pronounced [돼써요]. It comes from 되 + 었어요, contracted into one syllable with ㅆ underneath. The formal past is 됐습니다 and the casual past is 됐어. The spelling 됬어요 is a common error; if you would write 했어요 for 하다, write 됐어요 for 되다.

How do I remember 되 versus 돼? Swap in 하다. Where 하 sounds right, write 되; where 해 sounds right, write 돼. 하고 gives 되고, 해요 gives 돼요, 했어요 gives 됐어요 and 하세요 gives 되세요. The trick works because both verbs have a stem form and a contracted form, and the contraction appears in the same places.

Is 봬요 the same rule as 돼요? Yes. 뵈다, the humble verb for seeing someone you respect, has the same vowel ㅚ as 되다. 뵈 + 어요 contracts to 봬요, so "See you tomorrow" is spelled 내일 봬요, not 내일 뵈요. Before consonant endings the stem stays 뵈, as in 다음에 뵐게요.

Is 되요 ever correct? No. 되요 is not a correct spelling in any speech level or context, because the polite present ending is 어요 and 되 + 어요 must surface as 되어요 or 돼요. You will see 되요 often in casual online writing, but it is an error, and spell checkers and teachers will mark it.
