Class: 하다 Type
하다 type: 하 + 여 contracts to 해, so every ending that starts with 아/어 becomes 해-.
Common Mistake
Wrong: ✗ 약속이 취소했어요.
Correct: ✓ 약속을 취소했어요 / 약속이 취소됐어요.
Why: Use 을/를 when you cancel; use the passive 취소되다 when it gets cancelled.
Learners mix the active and passive patterns. With 이/가 on the plan you need the passive 취소되다; with the active 취소하다 the plan takes 을/를.
Confusable Verbs
| Verb | Difference |
|---|---|
| 예약하다 | 예약하다 is the opposite: making the booking. |
| 그만두다 | 그만두다 is quitting something ongoing like a job; 취소하다 is cancelling an arranged item. |
Cancelling and Being Cancelled
Three things are routinely cancelled: a booking (예약), an order (주문) and an appointment or plan (약속). Each has its own verb, 예약하다, 주문하다 and 약속하다, and 취소하다 undoes any of them.
The active and passive versions answer different questions. If you made the decision, say 약속을 취소했어요. To focus on the cancelled plan, use 취소되다, as in 약속이 취소됐어요. This wording leaves the person responsible unstated.
The third example shows why cancelling matters: 돈을 돌려받아요 means you get your money back. The conditional 취소하면 fits because refunds depend on the cancellation happening first. 그만두다 is the nearby verb, but it is for quitting something that is already running, such as a job, and not for calling off a single arranged item.
Two of the examples are worth copying as templates. The first states the plain action with a direct object, 예약을 취소해요. The second gives a reason with 비가 와서 before the cancelled plan, which is the usual order when explaining why an appointment fell through.
Cancelling a Restaurant Reservation
A customer phones a restaurant about tonight’s booking. The employee checks the customer’s intention before reporting that the cancellation is complete.
Customer
오늘 예약을 취소하고 싶어요.
Oneul yeyageul chwisohago sipeoyo.
I’d like to cancel today’s reservation.
Employee
몇 시 예약이에요?
Myeot si yeyagieyo?
What time is the reservation?
Customer
여섯 시예요. 취소해 주세요.
Yeoseot siyeyo. Chwisohae juseyo.
It’s at six. Please cancel it.
Employee
네. 예약을 취소했어요.
Ne. Yeyageul chwisohaesseoyo.
All right. I’ve cancelled the reservation.
The customer first states a wish with 취소하고 싶어요. 취소해 주세요 asks the employee to do the action, and 취소했어요 confirms that it has happened. The final past-tense statement matters: wanting to cancel and completing the cancellation are separate stages.
What Do Cancellation Labels Mean?
예약 취소 means reservation cancellation, 주문 취소 means order cancellation, and 결제 취소 means payment cancellation. These are noun labels, so an app button may show them without 하다. In a full sentence about what you do, use the verb and mark the cancelled item with 을/를.
취소 요청 means a cancellation request. 취소 완료 means cancellation complete. The first label describes a request being made; the second reports completion. When reading an order screen, those extra nouns tell you more than 취소 alone. A request can still need processing before the status changes.
무료 취소 means free cancellation. 취소 수수료 means a cancellation fee. These phrases describe the conditions attached to cancelling, rather than a different meaning of 취소하다. Read the deadline and conditions beside the label; the verb itself promises neither a refund nor free cancellation.
Where Will You See 취소하다?
Shopping apps, travel bookings and appointment messages use 취소 and its verb forms. A short button labelled 취소 can also mean cancelling the current action or closing a dialogue box. On that kind of screen, the button may abandon an edit rather than cancel an existing booking. The surrounding message tells you what will be affected.
A notice with 취소됐어요 or 취소되었습니다 reports that something has been cancelled. It may leave the person responsible unstated. You can use the active 취소했어요 when explaining your own action, but the passive wording does not automatically mean the decision was outside your control.
At a service counter, 취소하고 싶어요 introduces your request politely. 취소하세요 is an instruction to the other person to cancel. The honorific ending makes the instruction polite in form, but it does not turn it into a request for staff to cancel your booking on your behalf. 취소해 주세요 makes that request clearer.
Related Words on a Booking Screen
| Korean | Meaning | Useful note |
|---|---|---|
| 예약 | reservation / booking | The arrangement you want to cancel or change. |
| 변경 | change / modification | Use this when keeping a booking but altering a detail. |
| 환불 | refund | Money being returned; a separate issue from cancellation. |
| 수수료 | fee | May appear next to the cancellation conditions. |
The shopping vocabulary lesson teaches words for payments, orders and refunds. Keeping 취소 and 환불 distinct helps you ask about both the booking status and the money.
Keep the Person and the Booking in Their Roles
In 예약을 취소했어요, the speaker or another person cancelled the reservation. In 예약이 취소됐어요, the reservation is the subject of the completed cancellation. The particle change goes with a verb change: 을 with 취소하다, 이 with 취소되다. Changing only the particle leaves the sentence with the wrong relationship.
The example 취소하면 돈을 돌려받아요 illustrates a conditional sentence. It applies to a situation where a refund is available. It is not a rule for every purchase. To describe a particular cancellation, keep the grammatical condition separate from the business’s actual refund terms.
