돌아오다 means to come back, to return to where the speaker is or to a home base, as in 집에 돌아오다. The destination takes 에 or (으)로, and no object is needed.

Typical pairings are 집에 돌아오다 and 고향에 돌아오다. Both show the home-base idea: the place you left and then returned to.

For a respected person, the honorific is 돌아오세요. The register is neutral and the level is A2.

Meanings:

  • to come back. Return to where the speaker is or a home base, as in 집에 돌아오다.

Sound

The same linking applies as in the going-back verb: [도라오다], 돌아와요 read [도라와요], 돌아왔어요 read [도라와써요], and 돌아옵니다 read [도라옴니다]. The conditional 돌아오면 is read [도라오면].

Example Sentences

아빠는 저녁에 집에 돌아와요.

Dad comes back home in the evening.

Dad is the subject, and 저녁에 gives the usual time of return. Note that 집에 is the destination, with no object marker.

어제 여행에서 돌아왔어요.

I came back from my trip yesterday.

The particle 에서 in 여행에서 marks the origin of the return: the trip you came back from. 돌아왔어요 puts the return in the past.

돌아오면 전화해 주세요.

Please call me when you come back.

The conditional 돌아오면 ends the clause, followed by a request to call. It models the phrase 'when you come back' as an if-clause.

Class: Regular

It is regular. The only thing to notice is the 오 + 아 contraction into 와, which is the standard behaviour of stems ending in 오.

Common Mistake

Wrong: ✗ 집을 돌아와요

Correct: ✓ 집에 돌아와요

Why: The place of return is marked with 에 or (으)로, not 을/를.

English 'come home' has no preposition, so learners reach for the object particle. Korean treats home as the destination, so it takes 에 or (으)로, never 을/를.

Confusable Verbs

Verb Difference
돌아가다 돌아오다 is returning toward the speaker; 돌아가다 is going back away from the speaker.
오다 돌아오다 stresses returning to a place; 오다 is simply coming.

돌아가다 is the version for going away, so 돌아오다 is chosen when the point of view is at the destination.

오다 is plain coming, with no hint of an earlier departure. 돌아오다 says the person has been here before.

A Call from Home during a Trip

Jisu is at the home she shares with Alex. Alex is away on a short trip and calls to discuss the return.

Jisu

언제 집에 돌아와요?

Eonje jibe dorawayo?

When are you coming back home?

Alex

내일 돌아올 거예요.

Naeil doraol geoyeyo.

I’ll come back tomorrow.

Jisu

돌아오면 전화해 주세요.

Doraomyeon jeonhwahae juseyo.

Please call when you come back.

Alex

네, 알겠어요.

Ne, algesseoyo.

Okay, I will.

Jisu speaks from the destination, so 돌아오다 fits her question. Alex can keep the shared home as the reference point in the reply. The conditional 돌아오면 keeps 오; only endings with 아 produce the contracted 와 seen in 돌아와요.

Returning to a Place, a Season or a Topic

여행에서 돌아오다 means “to come back from a trip.” The phrase names the experience someone returns from. 집에 돌아오다 gives the destination instead. Both can describe the same journey, but they answer different questions: “from what?” and “to where?”

무사히 돌아오다 means “to return safely.” You can use it after a difficult trip or while hoping for someone's safe return. The return itself is literal; 무사히 adds “without mishap.” It is more specific than simply saying that the person came back.

다시 돌아오다 means “to come back again.” You may hear it when someone promises another visit or a character reappears. 다시 stresses repetition. It can also emphasize a welcome return after an absence rather than imply that the speaker has counted several trips.

봄이 돌아오다 means “spring returns.” Nobody is physically walking toward the speaker; the season comes around again. News, songs and reflective writing use this recurring-time sense. A phrase about a returning season therefore does not require a human subject.

본론으로 돌아오다 means “to return to the main point.” A teacher or meeting leader can use the phrase after a digression. 본론 is the main discussion, so the “destination” is the subject everyone was supposed to be discussing.

What Makes 돌아오다 Tricky?

The contracted 와 belongs to particular endings, not to every form. Compare 돌아와요 and 돌아왔어요 with 돌아오면 and 돌아오는. Keeping these pairs together prevents you from carrying 와 into the conditional just because you hear it often in conversation.

The modifier goes before a noun. 돌아오는 describes someone or something returning; 돌아온 describes a completed return; 돌아올 looks ahead to a return. These are useful in reading because the actual sentence ending may come much later, after the noun being described.

In dialogue, 돌아와요 can be a statement, a question or an appeal to come back. A drama character calling after someone may use it as a request. The English translation depends on who is speaking and whether the other person is leaving or already away.

돌아와서 links the return with a following action. 돌아오면 makes that action depend on the return. In the existing telephone example, the caller is asked to act once the condition is met; the sentence is not reporting that both actions have already happened.
