Connectors: -고, -아서/어서, -(으)니까
Choose A4 or US Letter on the card. Print the four practice pages together and the key page separately. The PDF is available in A4 and US Letter from the download card. The full content of every page is described below, so you can see what you will practise before you print.
What Is on Each Page?
Each page drills one grammar family. Page 1 is about joining clauses, page 2 about describing nouns, page 3 about guessing and giving reasons, and page 4 is a mixed review.
Page 1: Connectors -고, -아서/어서 and -(으)니까
Page 1 has ten sentences with one blank on the connector. A rule box at the top gives three one-line rules. -고 joins two actions in a list or a sequence: 밥을 먹고 커피를 마셔요 (I eat, and then drink coffee). -아서/어서 gives a reason or a sequence where the first action leads to the second: 날씨가 좋아서 공원에 가요 (The weather is good, so I go to the park). -(으)니까 also gives a reason, but it is the one you use before a command or a suggestion: 비가 오니까 우산을 가져가세요 (It is raining, so please take an umbrella). Hear two models below.
| No. | Sample item | Answer | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 밥을 먹___ 커피를 마셔요. | 먹고 | two actions in a row |
| 3 | 비가 오___ 우산을 가져가세요. | 오니까 | the second clause is a command |
| 6 | 늦___ 빨리 가세요. | 늦었으니까 | command, and -(으)니까 may take the past -았/었- |
| 9 | 추우___ 문을 닫으세요. | 추우니까 | command, and 춥다 is a ㅂ irregular: 추우- plus 니까 |
Page 2: Modifiers -(으)ㄴ, -는 and -(으)ㄹ
Page 2 has twelve phrases with a blank on the modifier. A small table at the top sorts the choices by tense. A verb in the past takes -(으)ㄴ (읽은 책, the book I read). A verb in the present takes -는 (먹는 음식, the food I am eating). A verb in the future takes -(으)ㄹ (만날 친구, the friend I will meet). A descriptive word in the present takes -(으)ㄴ (예쁜 꽃, a pretty flower), except 있다 and 없다 words, which take -는 (맛있는 음식, tasty food). Hear two models below.
| No. | Sample item | Answer | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 어제 읽___ 책 | 읽은 | verb in the past |
| 2 | 지금 먹___ 음식 | 먹는 | verb in the present |
| 4 | 예쁘___ 꽃 | 예쁜 | descriptive word in the present |
| 9 | 맛있___ 음식 | 맛있는 | 있다 words take -는 |
Page 3: -(으)ㄹ 것 같다 and -기 때문에
Page 3 has ten sentences, with one rule box for each ending. -(으)ㄹ 것 같다 means 'it seems that' or 'I think that', and on this page it is used for guesses about what has not happened yet: 내일 비가 올 것 같아요 (I think it will rain tomorrow). -기 때문에 gives a reason in a slightly firmer way than -아서/어서: 시간이 없기 때문에 못 가요 (I cannot go because I have no time). After a noun, drop -기 and say 비 때문에 (because of the rain). Say 같아요 as [가타요] and 때문에 as [때무네]. Hear two models below.
| No. | Sample item | Answer | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 내일 비가 오___ 것 같아요. | 올 | guess about the future, so -(으)ㄹ |
| 3 | 시험이 어려___ 것 같아요. | 어려울 | 어렵다 is a ㅂ irregular: 어려우- plus ㄹ |
| 5 | 시간이 없___ 때문에 못 가요. | 없기 | verb stem plus -기 |
| 9 | ___ 때문에 못 가요. (비) | 비 | a noun goes straight in front of 때문에 |
Page 4: Mixed Review and Short Writing
Page 4 mixes everything. Five pairs of short sentences must be joined with the right connector or modifier. For example, 피곤해요 plus 일찍 잤어요 becomes 피곤해서 일찍 잤어요. Then a writing task asks for three sentences about tomorrow, using at least one connector and one -(으)ㄹ 것 같다 sentence. The writing task is a personal answer, so it is not in the key.
The Answer Key
The key lists every answer with a one-line reason. For page 1 a typical reason is whether the second clause is a command. For page 2 it is the tense and the word type. For page 3 it is the stem plus -기 or -(으)ㄹ.
How Do I Use This Sheet?
Plan 50 to 60 minutes, or do one page a day. Page 4 should be last, because it needs all three skills.
- Do page 1 and ask the command question. For each sentence, ask whether the second clause is a command or suggestion. If it is, use -(으)니까.
- Translate each answer. Say the English meaning aloud before you write the answer. Checkpoint: you can explain why 오니까 and 와서 are not the same.
- Contrast -아서 and -니까. Write one sentence that works with both, and one that works with only -(으)니까.
- Say the tense out loud. On page 2 say past, present or future before you pick the modifier.
- Mark the key last. Check each page, then rewrite the wrong items.
Pair the sheet with the intermediate Korean grammar flashcards, so you practise the same patterns on screen and by hand.
What Is the Answer Key For?
The key is a separate last page, so you can print it apart from the exercises. Use it after you finish a page, not while you work. When an answer is wrong, find the one-line reason, then write the correct whole sentence, not only the blank.
Print Settings
Print at 100 percent scale, in black and white, on A4 or US Letter, with 12 mm margins for hole punching. Turn off fit-to-page, since scaling shrinks the writing space. Print the key on its own sheet if you share the worksheet. A pencil is better than a pen for the first pass.
Mistakes to Watch For
- Using -아서/어서 with a command. 비가 와서 우산을 쓰세요 is wrong. Say 비가 오니까 우산을 쓰세요.
- Putting the past tense inside -아서/어서. Say 피곤해서 (not 피곤했어서). The past goes on the last verb: 피곤해서 일찍 잤어요.
- Mixing modifier tenses. 어제 읽는 책 is wrong. Say 어제 읽은 책 for a book you read.
- Forgetting the exception for 있다 and 없다. Say 맛있는 음식, not 맛있은 음식.
- Using -기 때문에 with a command. It gives a reason, so use -(으)니까 before a command or suggestion.
The first mistake is the one that matters most in speech. Learners often use -아서 everywhere, and the command test is the fastest fix.
What This Worksheet Does Not Cover
The sheet covers three connectors, three modifiers and two endings. It does not cover -(으)면, -(으)려고, -는데 or the retrospective -던. Learn these in the intermediate Korean grammar lessons. The connector family is explained on the cause and reason connectors page and the modifiers on noun-modifying forms. The sheet is hand practice, so it does not teach how to say the words aloud.
What Should I Practice Next?
After the sheet, drill the same patterns with the intermediate grammar flashcards and compare the three tenses on the modifier tense comparison page. If any item felt too easy, go back to the beginner Korean grammar worksheet for review. Find other sheets in the Korean grammar worksheets collection. The advanced Korean grammar worksheet is the next sheet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Connectors Are on the Intermediate Grammar Worksheet?
Page 1 covers -고 (and, then), -아서/어서 (so, because) and -(으)니까 (because, used before commands and suggestions). The sheet shows when each one fits and asks you to complete ten sentences.
Is It for TOPIK?
It supports the grammar that appears at intermediate level in many courses, but it is not a TOPIK practice test and does not follow any exam format. Check the official TOPIK site, topik.go.kr, for the exam format and scoring.
Is There an Answer Key?
Yes. The answer key is a separate last page. It gives the answer to every item and a one-line reason, such as 'the second clause is a command, so -(으)니까'. Keep it face down until you finish a page.
How Long Does It Take?
Plan 50 to 60 minutes for all four pages. A page takes ten to fifteen minutes, plus a few minutes to check it against the answer key. Doing one page a day is easier to remember, because each page uses a different rule.
Is Audio Linked?
The printed PDF has no audio. This page has play buttons for six model sentences. The grammar flashcards have a clip for every card.
Is the Worksheet Free to Print?
Yes. It is free for personal and classroom use, with no sign-up or email. Print it on A4 or US Letter at 100 percent scale. Please link to this page instead of re-hosting the PDF, so that readers always get the latest corrected version.
Free for personal and classroom use. Teachers may print copies for their students. No reselling or republishing online.
