Choose A4 or US Letter on the card. Print the three practice pages together and the key page separately. The PDF is available in A4 and US Letter from the download card. The full content of every page is described below, so you can see what you will practise before you print.

What Is on Each Page?

Each page drills one skill. Page 1 is about choosing between two connectors, page 2 about the formal register, and page 3 is about spotting and fixing errors.

Page 1: Choose the Pattern (-는 바람에, -(으)ㄹ 뿐만 아니라)

Page 1 has ten sentences with two choices in brackets. A rule box gives two rules. -는 바람에 gives a cause that is a sudden event, and the result is bad. It attaches to verbs only: 길이 막히는 바람에 약속에 늦었어요 (The road got jammed, so I was late for the appointment). -(으)ㄹ 뿐만 아니라 adds a second fact, usually with 도: 이 식당은 맛있을 뿐만 아니라 값도 싸요 (This restaurant is not only tasty but also cheap). Hear two models below.

No. Sample item Answer Why
1 길이 (막히는 바람에 / 막힐 뿐만 아니라) 약속에 늦었어요. 막히는 바람에 a sudden event with a bad result
2 이 식당은 (맛있는 바람에 / 맛있을 뿐만 아니라) 값도 싸요. 맛있을 뿐만 아니라 an adjective, and the second fact is added with 도
4 그는 노래를 (잘하는 바람에 / 잘할 뿐만 아니라) 춤도 잘 춰요. 잘할 뿐만 아니라 the second fact is good news, not a bad result
9 늦잠을 (자는 바람에 / 잘 뿐만 아니라) 시험을 못 봤어요. 자는 바람에 an unplanned cause and a bad result

Page 2: Formal Register

Page 2 has ten informal sentences to rewrite in the formal style (합쇼체). A small table at the top shows the endings. A verb or adjective ends in -ㅂ니다 after a vowel and -습니다 after a consonant: 있습니다, 갑니다, 시작합니다. A stem ending in ㄹ drops the ㄹ: 살다 becomes 삽니다. A noun takes 입니다: 학생입니다. A question ends in -ㅂ니까 or -습니까: 갑니까?. A request becomes -(으)십시오: 읽어 주십시오. Hear two models below.

No. Informal sentence Formal answer Why
1 내일 회의가 있어요. 내일 회의가 있습니다. 있다 has a consonant stem, so -습니다
3 지금 어디에 가요? 지금 어디에 갑니까? a question takes -ㅂ니까
4 이 자료를 읽어 주세요. 이 자료를 읽어 주십시오. a request takes -(으)십시오
10 이름이 뭐예요? 이름이 무엇입니까? 뭐 becomes 무엇 and the ending is -입니까

Page 3: Error Correction

Page 3 has eight sentences, and each one has exactly one error. You rewrite the whole sentence. The errors are the ones learners make most often: the wrong form before 뿐만 아니라, a past form inside -는 바람에, an adjective with -는 바람에, a missing space in 뿐만 아니라, -는 바람에 before a command, and mistakes in the formal ending. Hear two corrected models below.

No. Sentence with an error Corrected Why
1 이 식당은 맛있는 뿐만 아니라 값도 싸요. 이 식당은 맛있을 뿐만 아니라 값도 싸요. the modifier before 뿐만 아니라 is -(으)ㄹ
6 비가 오는 바람에 우산을 가져가세요. 비가 오니까 우산을 가져가세요. a command needs -(으)니까
7 지금 어디에 갑니다? 지금 어디에 갑니까? a formal question ends in -ㅂ니까

The Answer Key

The key lists every answer with a one-line reason. For page 1 a typical reason is whether the cause is a sudden event or the clause adds a fact. For page 2 it is the form of the stem. For page 3 it is the exact rule that the sentence breaks.

How Do I Use This Sheet?

Plan 40 to 50 minutes, or do one page a day. Page 3 should be last, because it asks you to apply the rules from the other two.

  1. Read the rule box. Before page 1, read the two rules aloud. Checkpoint: you can say why 막히는 바람에 is right and 막힐 뿐만 아니라 is wrong in the first sentence.
  2. Say the result. For each -는 바람에 item, ask whether the result is bad. If it is good, the answer is 뿐만 아니라.
  3. Check the stem. On page 1, ask whether the first word is a verb or an adjective. Only verbs take -는 바람에.
  4. Read the formal sentences aloud. On page 2, say the informal sentence and then the formal one. The endings are easier to hear than to read.
  5. Mark the key last. Check each page, then rewrite the wrong items as full sentences.

Pair the sheet with the advanced Korean grammar flashcards, so you practise the same patterns on screen and by hand.

What Is the Answer Key For?

The key is a separate last page, so you can print it apart from the exercises. Use it after you finish a page, not while you work. When an answer is wrong, find the one-line reason, then write the correct whole sentence, not only the changed word.

Print at 100 percent scale, in black and white, on A4 or US Letter, with 12 mm margins for hole punching. Turn off fit-to-page, since scaling shrinks the writing space. Print the key on its own sheet if you share the worksheet. A pencil is better than a pen for the first pass.

Mistakes to Watch For

  • Mixing patterns of reason. -는 바람에, -아서/어서 and -(으)니까 are not interchangeable. Before a command or a suggestion, use -(으)니까: 비가 오니까 우산을 가져가세요. The form 비가 와서 우산을 가져가세요 is wrong.
  • Ignoring tense. -는 바람에 has no past form inside it, even for an event that is over. Say 막히는 바람에, not 막혔는 바람에, and put the past on the last verb: 늦었어요.
  • Using -는 바람에 with an adjective. 추운 바람에 is wrong. Say 추워서.
  • Forgetting the space. After a verb or an adjective, 뿐만 아니라 is two separate words: 올 뿐만 아니라. 뿐만아니라 is a spelling error. After a noun, 뿐 attaches to the noun instead: 한국어뿐만 아니라.
  • Overusing the formal style. -습니다 suits meetings, presentations and the news. With a friend it sounds stiff, so on page 2 remember that the formal style is a choice for a situation, not a correction.

The first two mistakes are the ones that matter most in speech. Learners often use 바람에 for any cause, and the "is the result bad?" test is the fastest fix.

What This Worksheet Does Not Cover

The sheet covers two connectors and one register. It does not cover the other reason patterns, such as -(으)ㄴ/는 탓에 and -(으)ㄴ/는 덕분에, or the plain written style (-ㄴ다/-는다). The connector lessons explain each one: see -는 바람에, -(으)ㄹ 뿐만 아니라 and the cause and reason connectors. The register lessons are on formal speech and the -ㅂ니까/-습니까 question ending. The sheet is written practice, so it does not train pronunciation; use the audio models above for that.

What Should I Practice Next?

After the sheet, drill the same patterns with the advanced grammar flashcards and read the advanced Korean grammar lessons again for anything that felt hard. If any item felt too easy, go back to the intermediate Korean grammar worksheet for review. Find other sheets in the Korean grammar worksheets collection. The Korean particles worksheet is the next sheet.
