What you'll learn
- Attach -(으)ㄹ to any verb stem and place it before 필요.
- Say "need to" and "no need to" in the polite and formal styles.
- Pronounce 필요 and the sounds that change around it.
- Choose between 필요가 있다 and -아/어야 하다 for the right strength.
- Tell the pattern apart from -지 않아도 되다 and the noun use of 필요하다.
Before you start: you should know how to find a verb stem (drop 다 from the dictionary form) and the idea of a modifier that describes a noun. If the notion of obligation is new, read -아/어야 하다/되다 first. Audio plays only when you press a button.
What Does -(으)ㄹ 필요가 있다/없다 Grammar Mean?
-(으)ㄹ 필요가 있다/없다 grammar means "there is a need to do this" or "there is no need to do this." It is built from three parts. The first is -(으)ㄹ, a modifier that points to a future or possible action. The second is 필요, a noun meaning "need" or "necessity." The third is 있다 ("to exist") or 없다 ("to not exist"). Literally it says "a need to do X exists" or "a need to do X does not exist."
Here are the first two examples. The pattern is the same in both, and only the verb and the final word change.
- 이 문제는 다시 생각할 필요가 있어요. (i munjeneun dasi saenggakal piryoga isseoyo.) [이 문제는 다시 생가칼 피료가 이써요] = "We need to rethink this problem."
- 걱정할 필요 없어요. (geokjeonghal piryo eopseoyo.) [걱쩡할 피료 업써요] = "There is no need to worry."
The first sentence is advice. The speaker sees a problem and says that it deserves more thought. The second is reassurance. Both are calm in tone. The pattern does not push, which is the main difference from 해야 해요 ("you have to"). The next section shows how to build the pattern.
How Do You Form -(으)ㄹ 필요가 있다/없다?
-(으)ㄹ 필요가 있다/없다 is formed by dropping 다 from the dictionary form, adding -ㄹ or -을 to the stem, and then adding 필요가 있다 or 필요가 없다. If the stem ends in a vowel or ㄹ, add -ㄹ (and for ㄹ-stems, nothing more, because the ㄹ is already there). If it ends in any other consonant, add -을.
| Dictionary form | Stem | Stem + -(으)ㄹ | With 필요가 있다 | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 가다 | 가 | 갈 | 갈 필요가 있다 | need to go |
| 하다 | 하 | 할 | 할 필요가 있다 | need to do |
| 먹다 | 먹 | 먹을 | 먹을 필요가 있다 | need to eat |
| 읽다 | 읽 | 읽을 | 읽을 필요가 있다 | need to read |
| 만들다 | 만들 | 만들 | 만들 필요가 있다 | need to make |
| 서두르다 | 서두르 | 서두를 | 서두를 필요가 있다 | need to hurry |
The table shows one rule applied to six verbs. This is the same modifier form used in many other patterns, such as 할 수 있다 ("can do"). The next three parts look at the groups of stems one at a time.
Stems Ending in a Vowel
A vowel stem takes -ㄹ, which sits under the last syllable as a final consonant. 가다 becomes 갈, 오다 becomes 올, and 하다 becomes 할. Examples:
- 병원에 갈 필요가 없어요. (byeongwone gal piryoga eopseoyo.) [병워네 갈 피료가 업써요] = "There is no need to go to the hospital."
- 더 연습할 필요가 있어요. (deo yeonseupal piryoga isseoyo.) [더 연스팔 피료가 이써요] = "You need to practise more."
Notice the sound in 연습할: the ㅂ of 습 and the ㅎ of 할 join into one aspirated sound, so you hear [연스팔]. In Revised Romanization, aspiration at this point is written with p: yeonseupal. This follows the standard pronunciation rules (표준 발음법) of the 국립국어원 (National Institute of Korean Language) for ㅎ next to a plain consonant.
Vowel stems are the simplest case. A stem with a final consonant needs one small extra sound.
Stems Ending in a Consonant
A consonant stem takes -을, with 으 as a linking vowel. 먹다 becomes 먹을, 읽다 becomes 읽을, and 앉다 becomes 앉을. The only exception is a stem that ends in ㄹ, which takes no extra letter.
- 약을 먹을 필요가 있어요. (yageul meogeul piryoga isseoyo.) [야글 머글 피료가 이써요] = "You need to take medicine."
- 직접 만들 필요는 없어요. (jikjeop mandeul piryoneun eopseoyo.) [직쩝 만들 피료는 업써요] = "You do not need to make it yourself."
The spelling keeps the final consonant, but the sound moves to the next syllable: 먹을 is spoken [머글]. The word 필요 itself is spoken [피료], because the ㄹ of 필 links to the 요: piryo. So 필요가 있어요 is [피료가 이써요], and 필요 없어요 is [피료 업써요].
Two more groups need a short note, because learners expect trouble with them.
Do Irregular Stems, Adjectives and Nouns Change?
Some irregular stems change before -을, because 을 begins with a vowel. The ㄷ and ㅂ classes change; 르-verbs and ㄹ-stems simply take -ㄹ:
- ㄷ-irregular: 듣다 becomes 들을. 이 노래를 들을 필요가 있어요 = "You need to listen to this song."
- ㅂ-irregular: 돕다 becomes 도울. 친구를 도울 필요가 있어요 = "You need to help your friend."
- 르-verbs: 서두르다 becomes 서두를. 서두를 필요 없어요 = "There is no need to hurry."
- ㄹ-stems: 만들다 stays 만들. No extra letter is added.
This pattern is used mostly with verbs. Adjectives rarely sit before 필요, because "a need to be tall" is an unusual idea. To say that something is needed, use the noun and the adjective 필요하다 instead: 도움이 필요해요 (doumi piryohaeyo) = "I need help." The adjective can also modify a noun: 필요한 물건 (piryohan mulgeon) = "a thing that is needed." With the forms clear, one sentence can be built step by step.
Worked Example: Building a Sentence with -(으)ㄹ 필요가 있다/없다
-(으)ㄹ 필요가 있다/없다 grammar works by turning an action into a thing that is needed. Follow the steps with the idea "We need to rethink this problem."
- Start with the verb. The verb is 생각하다 (to think). Its dictionary form ends in 다.
- Find the stem. Drop 다. The stem is 생각하. It ends in the vowel ㅏ.
- Add the modifier. The stem ends in a vowel, so add -ㄹ: 생각하 + ㄹ = 생각할.
- Add 필요가 있다. Put the noun and the verb of existence after it: 생각할 필요가 있다.
- Put the sentence in the polite style. 있다 becomes 있어요: 생각할 필요가 있어요.
- Rebuild the sentence. Keep the topic and the adverb in front: 이 문제는 다시 생각할 필요가 있어요. (i munjeneun dasi saenggakal piryoga isseoyo.) = "We need to rethink this problem."
Sentence
We need to rethink this problem.
Show answer
이 문제는 다시 생각할 필요가 있어요
You will know it worked when the topic (이 문제는) and the adverb (다시) stay in place and the last three words are 생각할 필요가 있어요. The most common slip at this step is to forget the space between 생각할 and 필요가. The modifier stands apart from the noun. The sentence is now a need, but the pattern has limits on tense and sentence type.
Which Tenses and Sentence Types Work with -(으)ㄹ 필요가 있다/없다?
-(으)ㄹ 필요가 있다/없다 works in the present and the past, in statements and in questions. The change always happens on 있다 or 없다, the last word. The verb before 필요 stays in the -(으)ㄹ form. The table shows the forms for 가다.
| Sentence type | Form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Polite statement (need) | 갈 필요가 있어요 | We need to go. |
| Polite statement (no need) | 갈 필요가 없어요 | There is no need to go. |
| Spoken short form | 갈 필요 없어요 | No need to go. |
| Polite question | 갈 필요가 있어요? | Is there a need to go? |
| Past | 갈 필요가 없었어요 | There was no need to go. |
| Formal | 갈 필요가 있습니다 | There is a need to go. |
| Topic form | 갈 필요는 없어요 | There is no need to go (but...). |
Here is how some forms are spoken. 있습니다 is [읻씀니다] (itseumnida) and 없었어요 is [업써써요] (eopseosseoyo). The topic form 필요는 없어요 means "It is not necessary (although it would be fine)," and it softens the refusal.
- 일찍 올 필요가 없었어요. (iljjik ol piryoga eopseosseoyo.) [일찍 올 피료가 업써써요] = "There was no need to come early."
- 사실을 확인할 필요가 있습니다. (sasireul hwaginhal piryoga itseumnida.) [사시를 화긴할 피료가 읻씀니다] = "We need to check the facts."
The past marker never goes on the verb before 필요. The pattern also works with the honorific -(으)시-: 여기까지 오실 필요 없어요 (yeogikkaji osil piryo eopseoyo) [여기까지 오실 피료 업써요] = "You do not need to come all the way here."
Keep a polite tone with 필요 없어요 when talking about people. Said about a person or an offer, the short form can sound blunt: 필요 없어요 can mean "I don't need it" in a cold way. Add 괜찮아요 or 감사합니다 to soften it. The most useful contrast for a learner is next to the pattern that states a stronger duty.
How Is -(으)ㄹ 필요가 있다/없다 Different from -아/어야 하다?
-(으)ㄹ 필요가 있다 states a need in a calm and formal way, while -아/어야 하다 states a duty directly. Both can often translate as "need to," but the speaker's attitude is different. 필요가 있다 sounds like advice or an observation. 해야 해요 sounds like a rule or a necessity that the speaker feels.
| Point | -(으)ㄹ 필요가 있다/없다 | -아/어야 하다/되다 |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning | need to / no need to | must, have to |
| Register | formal, report-like | neutral, everyday |
| Strength | mild, advisory | direct |
| Example | 더 연습할 필요가 있어요. | 더 연습해야 해요. |
| Meaning of example | You need to practise more. | You have to practise more. |
The negative sides line up too. 갈 필요가 없어요 ("no need to go") is close in meaning to 가지 않아도 돼요 ("you don't have to go"), but the first sounds more formal. The full rules are on the page for -아/어야 하다/되다 and -지 않아도 되다, and the side-by-side lesson is -아/어야 하다 vs -(으)ㄹ 필요가 있다.
A second neighbour is the noun use of 필요: 필요하다 means "to be needed," as in 우산이 필요해요 ("I need an umbrella"). It follows a noun and a particle. The pattern in this lesson follows a verb and the modifier -(으)ㄹ. A third neighbour is the prohibition -(으)면 안 되다, which does not state need at all. These contrasts lead to the smaller variations of the pattern itself.
Variations and Edge Cases of -(으)ㄹ 필요가 있다/없다
-(으)ㄹ 필요가 있다/없다 has four common variations: a dropped particle, a topic form, an honorific form and a question form. Each one appears in real conversation.
- A dropped particle. The particle 가 is often left out in speech: 필요 있어요 and 필요 없어요. The meaning is unchanged. The spoken shape is short and natural.
- A topic form. Use 는 instead of 가 to contrast: 직접 만들 필요는 없어요 means "You don't need to make it yourself (though you could)." The particle 는 hints at a comparison.
- Honorific -(으)시-. Add -(으)시- to the verb before 필요 for a respected person: 오실 필요 없어요. The full rule is on honorific -(으)시-.
- A question. 갈 필요가 있어요? asks "Is there a need to go?" The answer 네, 있어요 ("Yes, there is") or 아니요, 없어요 ("No, there isn't") follows the same pattern as other existence questions.
This lesson covers the plain need pattern used in advice and reports, not every way to say "necessary." The mistakes below show where the boundary causes real errors.
What Mistakes Do Learners Make with -(으)ㄹ 필요가 있다/없다?

Learners most often get the strength, the modifier or the tense wrong. Four mistakes appear again and again.
- Treating it as a strong "must." 필요가 있다 is milder than 해야 하다. A teacher saying 공부할 필요가 있어요 is advising, not ordering.
- Using -(으)ㄴ before 필요. 간 필요가 없어요 is wrong. The future modifier -(으)ㄹ is used: 갈 필요가 없어요.
- Putting the past on the main verb. 왔을 필요가 없어요 is not the way to say "There was no need to come." Put the past on 없다: 올 필요가 없었어요.
- Adding 을 after ㄹ. 만들을 필요가 없어요 is wrong. A stem ending in ㄹ already has the final consonant: 만들 필요가 없어요.
A quick check for any need sentence: Is the verb in the -(으)ㄹ form? Is there a space before 필요? Is the tense on 있다 or 없다? If all three answers are yes, the sentence is sound.
The practice set below tests these four points directly.
Practice and Answers
Try the four items before you read the answer key. Cover the answers with your hand.
- Choose the form. Complete: 약을 ___ 필요가 있어요. (먹을 / 먹은)
- Fix the error. A learner says 만들을 필요가 없어요. Correct it.
- Translate. "There is no need to bring an umbrella today." Use 가져오다 and the polite style.
- Write your own. Write one sentence of advice to a friend using -(으)ㄹ 필요가 있어요. Then write the same advice as a "no need" sentence.

What Should You Learn Next after -(으)ㄹ 필요가 있다/없다 Grammar?
After -(으)ㄹ 필요가 있다/없다 grammar, learn the stronger duty pattern, then the way to cancel a duty. This lesson teaches the calm need pattern and does not cover direct duties, cancelled duties or prohibition in depth. Those live on their own pages.
- Start with -아/어야 하다/되다, which states a duty directly.
- Compare the pair side by side in -아/어야 하다 vs -(으)ㄹ 필요가 있다.
- For requests not to do something, see -지 마세요 don't and -지 않다 negation.
- Return to Obligation and Permission to see every lesson in this set, or to the Intermediate Grammar list for other B1 patterns.
With these steps, -(으)ㄹ 필요가 있다/없다 becomes automatic: take the verb stem, add -(으)ㄹ, and finish with 필요가 있어요 or 필요가 없어요.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does -(으)ㄹ 필요가 있다/없다 mean?
-(으)ㄹ 필요가 있다 means "there is a need to" or "it is necessary to," and -(으)ㄹ 필요가 없다 means "there is no need to." 다시 생각할 필요가 있어요 means "We need to rethink it," and 걱정할 필요 없어요 means "There is no need to worry." The word 필요 means "need" or "necessity."
How do I attach -(으)ㄹ 필요가 있다/없다 to a verb or adjective?
Drop 다 and add -ㄹ if the stem ends in a vowel or ㄹ, or -을 if it ends in another consonant. 가다 gives 갈 필요가 있다, 먹다 gives 먹을 필요가 있다, and 만들다 gives 만들 필요가 있다. It is used mostly with verbs. For a noun, use 필요하다 directly: 도움이 필요해요.
Can -(으)ㄹ 필요가 있다/없다 be used in the past tense?
Yes. The past marker goes on 있다 or 없다, and the verb before 필요 stays in the -(으)ㄹ form. 일찍 올 필요가 없었어요 means "There was no need to come early." Do not put the past on the verb before 필요: 왔을 필요가 없어요 is not the natural way to say this.
Is -(으)ㄹ 필요가 있다/없다 used in speech or only in writing?
Both, but it has a formal flavour. It appears in advice, news, reports and speeches: 사실을 확인할 필요가 있습니다. In everyday speech, people shorten it to 필요 없어요 or 필요 있어요?. Friends mostly say 안 해도 돼 instead. 필요 없어요 can sound blunt when it is said about a person or an offer.
What is the most common mistake with -(으)ㄹ 필요가 있다/없다?
The most common mistake is treating it as a strong "must." 필요가 있다 is milder than 해야 하다. It says that something is worth doing, not that it is forced. A second mistake is using -(으)ㄴ before 필요, as in 간 필요가 없어요. The future form -(으)ㄹ is required, and the tense goes on 있다 or 없다.
