What you'll learn
- Attach -지 않아도 to any stem, and use the short form 안 -아/어도.
- Say "You don't have to..." and "There is no need to..." in the polite style.
- Answer "Do I have to?" with the right yes/no word.
- Explain the difference between "don't have to" and "must not".
- Tell the pattern apart from -(으)면 안 되다, -아/어야 하다 and -(으)ㄹ 필요가 없다.
Before you start: you should know how to find a verb stem (drop 다 from the dictionary form) and the pattern -지 않다 negation, which gives the base -지 않다 used here. Audio plays only when you press a button.
What Does -지 않아도 되다 Grammar Mean?
-지 않아도 되다 grammar means "it is fine not to do this." It is built from -지 않다, the long negative, and the permission pattern -아/어도 되다. The first part negates the action, and the second part says that this is acceptable. Together they say "even if you don't, it is fine."
Here are the first two examples. The pattern is the same in both, and only the verb changes.
- 내일은 일찍 오지 않아도 돼요. (naeireun iljjik oji anado dwaeyo.) [내이른 일찍 오지 아나도 돼요] = "You don't have to come early tomorrow."
- 저는 가지 않아도 돼요? (jeoneun gaji anado dwaeyo?) [저는 가지 아나도 돼요] = "Don't I have to go?"
The meaning is "no obligation." The listener is free from a duty. This is very different from "must not." Think of it as removing a rule, not adding one. The next section shows how to build the pattern.
How Do You Form -지 않아도 되다?
-지 않아도 되다 is formed by dropping 다 from the dictionary form and adding -지 않아도 되다. Nothing else changes. The same rule works for vowel stems, consonant stems and irregular verbs, because -지 begins with a consonant and never triggers a stem change.
| Dictionary form | Stem | Add -지 않아도 | Polite form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 오다 | 오 | 오지 않아도 | 오지 않아도 돼요 | don't have to come |
| 가다 | 가 | 가지 않아도 | 가지 않아도 돼요 | don't have to go |
| 먹다 | 먹 | 먹지 않아도 | 먹지 않아도 돼요 | don't have to eat |
| 읽다 | 읽 | 읽지 않아도 | 읽지 않아도 돼요 | don't have to read |
| 하다 | 하 | 하지 않아도 | 하지 않아도 돼요 | don't have to do |
| 만들다 | 만들 | 만들지 않아도 | 만들지 않아도 돼요 | don't have to make |
The table shows one rule applied to six verbs. The next three parts look at the groups of stems one at a time.
Stems Ending in a Vowel
A vowel stem takes -지 않아도 directly. 오다 becomes 오지 않아도, 사다 becomes 사지 않아도, and 일어나다 becomes 일어나지 않아도. Examples:
- 이 책은 사지 않아도 돼요. (i chaegeun saji anado dwaeyo.) [이 채근 사지 아나도 돼요] = "You don't have to buy this book."
- 숙제를 하지 않아도 돼요. (sukjereul haji anado dwaeyo.) = "You don't have to do homework."
Vowel stems are the simplest case. A stem with a final consonant looks different on the page but follows the same rule.
Stems Ending in a Consonant
A consonant stem also takes -지 않아도 directly, with no linking vowel. 먹다 becomes 먹지 않아도, and 읽다 becomes 읽지 않아도.
- 오늘은 먹지 않아도 돼요. (oneureun meokji anado dwaeyo.) [오느른 먹찌 아나도 돼요] = "You don't have to eat today."
The spelling stays 먹지, but the sound changes: after a final ㄱ, the ㅈ of 지 is pronounced tense, so you hear [먹찌]. This follows the standard pronunciation rules (표준 발음법) of the 국립국어원 (National Institute of Korean Language). The 않 is spoken without its ㅎ in this position: 않아도 sounds like [아나도]. Write the plain spelling and say the changed sound.
Two more groups need a short note, because learners expect trouble with them.
Do Irregular Stems, Adjectives and Nouns Change?
Irregular stems do not change before -지, because -지 starts with a consonant. 듣다 stays 듣지 않아도, 돕다 stays 돕지 않아도, 만들다 stays 만들지 않아도, and 모르다 stays 모르지 않아도. The 돼요 at the end carries the whole speech level.
Adjectives take the same ending, and the meaning becomes "it doesn't have to be...": 비싸지 않아도 돼요 (bissaji anado dwaeyo) = "It doesn't have to be expensive."
For a noun, use 아니다 ("to not be") instead of 이다. 학생이 아니어도 돼요 (haksaengi anieodo dwaeyo) [학쌩이 아니어도 돼요] = "You don't have to be a student."
With the formation clear, one sentence can be built step by step.
Worked Example: Building a Sentence with -지 않아도 되다
-지 않아도 되다 grammar works by turning an obligation into "no obligation." Follow the steps with the idea "You don't have to do homework."
- Start with the verb. The verb is 하다 (to do). Its dictionary form ends in 다.
- Find the stem. Drop 다. The stem is 하.
- Add the long negative. 하 + 지 않다 = 하지 않다.
- Add 아도 to 않다. 않 + 아도 = 않아도.
- Add 되다 in the polite style. 되다 becomes 돼요. The full ending is 하지 않아도 돼요.
- Rebuild the sentence. Put the object first: 숙제를 하지 않아도 돼요. (sukjereul haji anado dwaeyo.) = "You don't have to do homework."
Sentence
You don't have to do homework.
Show answer
숙제를 하지 않아도 돼요
You will know it worked when the object (숙제를) stays in front and the last two words are 않아도 돼요. The most common slip at this step is to put 안 and 지 않다 together, as in 안 하지 않아도 돼요. Use one negative only: either 하지 않아도 or 안 해도. The sentence is now a cancelled obligation, but the pattern has limits on tense and sentence type.
Which Tenses and Sentence Types Work with -지 않아도 되다?
-지 않아도 되다 works in the present and the past, in statements and in questions, with two forms of the negative. All tense changes happen on 되다, the last word. The table shows the forms for 가다.
| Sentence type | Form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Polite statement | 가지 않아도 돼요 | You don't have to go. |
| Short form | 안 가도 돼요 | You don't have to go. |
| Polite question | 가지 않아도 돼요? | Don't I have to go? |
| Past | 가지 않아도 됐어요 | I didn't have to go. |
| Formal | 가지 않아도 됩니다 | You do not have to go. |
| Casual | 안 가도 돼 | You don't have to go (to a friend). |
| Honorific | 가지 않으셔도 돼요 | You (respected person) don't have to go. |
The short form is built by moving 안 in front of the verb and using the -아/어도 form: 가지 않아도 becomes 안 가도, and 하지 않아도 becomes 안 해도 (or, for a noun + 하다 verb, 숙제 안 해도). Both are correct. The short form is common in speech, and the long form is neutral in writing.
- 지금 안 가도 돼요. (jigeum an gado dwaeyo.) = "You don't have to go now."
- 오늘은 숙제 안 해도 돼요. (oneureun sukje an haedo dwaeyo.) [오느른 숙쩨 안 해도 돼요] = "You don't have to do homework today."
The past form is spoken [돼써요]. 어제는 일찍 일어나지 않아도 됐어요 (eojeneun iljjik ireonaji anado dwaesseoyo) [어제는 일찌 기러나지 아나도 돼써요] means "Yesterday I didn't have to get up early." The tense is always on 되다.
A question with a negative has a trap in the answer. In Korean, 네 confirms the content that the questioner has in mind, so 가지 않아도 돼요? "Don't I have to go?" is answered 네, 안 가도 돼요 ("Right, you don't have to") or 아니요, 가야 돼요 ("No, you have to"). See answering yes or no questions for the full rule. The most useful contrast for a learner is next to the patterns that look alike.
How Is -지 않아도 되다 Different from -아/어야 하다?
-지 않아도 되다 cancels an obligation, while -아/어야 하다 creates one. They are opposites, and a good dialogue uses both: 내일은 일찍 와야 해요 ("I have to come early tomorrow") and 모레는 일찍 오지 않아도 돼요 ("I don't have to come early the day after").
| Point | -지 않아도 되다 | -아/어야 하다/되다 |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning | don't have to | must, have to |
| Function | cancels an obligation | states an obligation |
| Attaches to | stem + 지 않아도 | stem + 아/어야 |
| Example | 오늘은 가지 않아도 돼요. | 오늘은 가야 해요. |
| Meaning of example | You don't have to go today. | You have to go today. |
The full rules are on the page for -아/어야 하다/되다.
Two other neighbours are easy to confuse with this pattern.
- -(으)면 안 되다. This forbids: 가면 안 돼요 means "You must not go." The two patterns sound similar, but the meanings are opposite in direction. "Don't have to" frees the listener, and "must not" restricts them. See -(으)면 안 되다.
- -(으)ㄹ 필요가 없다. This also means "there is no need to," and it is slightly more formal: 갈 필요가 없어요. See -(으)ㄹ 필요가 있다/없다.
A last neighbour is the request not to do something. -지 마세요 means "Please don't," as in 가지 마세요. It is a request to another person and is explained at -지 마세요 don't. These contrasts lead to the smaller variations of the pattern itself.
Variations and Edge Cases of -지 않아도 되다
-지 않아도 되다 has three common variations and one note on tone: set phrases, an honorific form, emphasis with 굳이, and how direct the pattern sounds. Each one appears in real conversation.
- Set phrases. 걱정하지 않아도 돼요 (geokjeonghaji anado dwaeyo) [걱쩡하지 아나도 돼요] = "You don't need to worry." Speakers also say 걱정 안 해도 돼요. Both comfort the listener.
- Honorific -(으)시-. For a respected person, add -(으)시- to 않다: 오지 않으셔도 돼요 (oji aneusyeodo dwaeyo) [오지 아느셔도 돼요] = "You don't have to come." The short form is 안 오셔도 돼요. The full rule is on honorific -(으)시-.
- Emphasis with 굳이. Add 굳이 to stress that no extra effort is needed: 굳이 가지 않아도 돼요 means "You really don't have to go." The word 굳이 means "specially" or "going out of your way."
- Level of directness. -지 않아도 되다 is direct but kind. In service settings, speakers often prefer 괜찮습니다 ("That's fine") when they decline.
This lesson covers the plain "don't have to" pattern used in daily life, not every way to say no. The mistakes below show where the boundary with other patterns causes real errors.
What Mistakes Do Learners Make with -지 않아도 되다?

Learners most often get the meaning, the negative or the tense wrong. Four mistakes appear again and again.
- Hearing it as "must not." -지 않아도 돼요 does not forbid the action. 가지 않아도 돼요 means "You don't have to go." It can still be fine to go.
- Stacking two negatives. 안 가지 않아도 돼요 is wrong. Use one negative: 가지 않아도 돼요 or 안 가도 돼요.
- Putting the past on the main verb. 갔지 않아도 돼요 is wrong. The past marker goes on 되다: 가지 않아도 됐어요.
- Mixing it with -지 않으면 안 되다. The ending 않으면 changes everything: 가지 않으면 안 돼요 means "You must go." Compare 않아도 ("even if you don't") with 않으면 ("if you don't").
A quick check for any "don't have to" sentence: Is the negative made with one 지 않다 or one 안? Is the ending 아도 and not 으면? Is the tense on 되다? If all three answers are yes, the sentence is sound.
The practice set below tests these four points directly.
Practice and Answers
Try the four items before you read the answer key. Cover the answers with your hand.
- Choose the form. Complete: 내일은 일찍 ___ . (오지 않아도 돼요 / 오지 않으면 돼요)
- Fix the error. A learner says 안 가지 않아도 돼요. Correct it.
- Translate. "You don't have to clean today." Use 청소하다 and the polite style.
- Write your own. Write one sentence about something you do not have to do this weekend, using -지 않아도 돼요. Then write the short form with 안.

- 오지 않아도 돼요. The pattern for "don't have to" is 않아도, not 않으면.
- 가지 않아도 돼요 or 안 가도 돼요. Use only one negative.
- 오늘은 청소하지 않아도 돼요. (oneureun cheongsohaji anado dwaeyo.) = "You don't have to clean today."

What Should You Learn Next after -지 않아도 되다 Grammar?
After -지 않아도 되다 grammar, learn the pattern that creates obligations, then the one that forbids. This lesson teaches the cancelled obligation and does not cover "must" or "must not" in depth. Those live on their own pages.
- Start with -아/어야 하다/되다, which states an obligation.
- Continue with -(으)면 안 되다, which forbids.
- Review the negatives behind this pattern: -지 않다 negation and -지 마세요 don't.
- Return to Obligation and Permission to see every lesson in this set, or to the Beginner Grammar list for other A2 patterns.
With these steps, -지 않아도 되다 becomes automatic: take the verb stem, add 지 않아도, and finish with 돼요.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does -지 않아도 되다 mean?
-지 않아도 되다 means "you don't have to" or "there is no need to." It cancels an obligation. 오지 않아도 돼요 means "You don't have to come," and 걱정하지 않아도 돼요 means "You don't need to worry." It says that not doing the action is acceptable. It does not say that you are not allowed to do it.
How do I attach -지 않아도 되다 to a verb or adjective?
Drop 다 from the dictionary form and add -지 않아도 되다. 가다 becomes 가지 않아도 되다, and 먹다 becomes 먹지 않아도 되다. The same shape works for adjectives: 비싸지 않아도 돼요. In speech, many people prefer the short form 안 -아/어도 되다, as in 안 가도 돼요. No stem needs special spelling.
Can -지 않아도 되다 be used in the past tense?
Yes, but the past marker goes on 되다. 어제는 일찍 일어나지 않아도 됐어요 means "Yesterday I didn't have to get up early." The main verb stays in its stem form. Do not put the past on the verb before 지: 일어났지 않아도 is wrong.
Is -지 않아도 되다 used in speech or only in writing?
Both. The long form -지 않아도 돼요 is neutral and suits writing and careful speech. The short form 안 -아/어도 돼요 is more common in everyday talk. For a respected listener, add -(으)시-: 오지 않으셔도 돼요 means "You don't have to come." The meaning is the same at every level.
What is the most common mistake with -지 않아도 되다?
The most common mistake is hearing it as a prohibition. -지 않아도 되다 means "not doing it is fine," so 가지 않아도 돼요 means "You don't have to go," not "You must not go." The prohibition is 가면 안 돼요. A second slip is mixing up the double negative -지 않으면 안 되다, which means "must."
