Korean Date Format: Year, Month, Day Order Explained

The Korean date format puts the year first, then the month, then the day, as in 2026년 10월 8일. Each part takes a Sino-Korean number and a short unit word: 년 for year, 월 for month and 일 for day. The weekday comes last, so the whole date runs from the largest unit to the smallest.

What you'll learn

  • Write and say a full date in Korean, from the year to the weekday.
  • Read the two irregular months, 유월 (June) and 시월 (October).
  • Recognise four ways of writing the same date in numerals.
  • Convert a US or UK numeric date into Korean order.

Prerequisites: Sino-Korean numbers 1-100. Estimated time: 30 minutes.

What Is the Korean Date Format?

Teaching print showing 2026년, 10월, 8일.
Practise 2026년, 10월, 8일.

The Korean date format is year, then month, then day, written with 년, 월 and 일. The pattern is [number]년 [number]월 [number]일. A helpful way to remember it is that Korean moves from the big picture to the detail, the same way an address moves from country to street.

Part Unit Example Meaning
Year 년 2026년 year 2026
Month 월 10월 October
Day 일 8일 the 8th

Put together, these give 2026년 10월 8일 (October 8, 2026). Add the weekday for a complete date: 2026년 10월 8일 목요일 (Thursday). Compare the three English habits: the US writes month-day-year (10/8/2026), the UK and much of the world write day-month-year (8/10/2026), and Korean writes year-month-day, like the international ISO 8601 standard (2026-10-08).

Region Order Example for the same day
Korea year, month, day 2026년 10월 8일
United States month, day, year 10/8/2026
United Kingdom day, month, year 8/10/2026

The Sino-Korean numbers are the same ones you use for counting money and phone numbers: 일, 이, 삼, 사, 오. Native numbers such as 하나 and 둘 do not appear in written dates. Now let us turn the written date into sound.

How Do You Say a Date Aloud?

Teaching print showing 이천이십육 년, 시월, 팔 일.
Practise 이천이십육 년, 시월, 팔 일.

To say a date aloud, read the year as one full Sino-Korean number, then the month, then the day, with each unit word: 이천이십육 년 시월 팔 일 목요일. Each number is read the way you read any large number, so 2026 becomes 이천 (2,000) + 이십 (20) + 육 (6).

Written Spoken
2026년 이천이십육 년
10월 시월
8일 팔 일
목요일 목요일

Here are two more worked dates.

  • 1999년 3월 21일 is 천구백구십구 년 삼월 이십일 일.
  • 2008년 12월 25일 is 이천팔 년 십이월 이십오 일.

Notice that 1999 starts with 천 (1,000) and not 일천. Korean drops the 일 before 천, 백 and 만 in ordinary numbers. The year 2000 is just 이천 년.

The Twelve Months in a Date

Months are Sino-Korean numbers plus 월, with two irregular readings. June is 유월 and October is 시월, because 육 and 십 lose their final consonant before 월. Every other month is regular.

Month Korean Month Korean
January 일월 July 칠월
February 이월 August 팔월
March 삼월 September 구월
April 사월 October 시월
May 오월 November 십일월
June 유월 December 십이월

You write the month as 6월 or 10월 in numerals, so the irregularity shows only when you read it aloud. The full list with notes is on the page about months in Korean. Next comes the shortcut that Koreans use in everyday speech.

Skipping the Year in Speech

Koreans skip the year when it is obvious, so a spoken date is often just the month and the day: 시월 팔 일. If the year is already clear, saying it would sound as stiff as saying "the year two thousand twenty-six" in English every time. When you need the year, you can use the relative words 올해 (this year) and 내년 (next year): 올해 시월 팔 일.

You will learn how to say years such as 2026 and 1999 in more detail on how to say year in Korean. The written date has its own set of habits, covered next.

How Do You Write Dates in Numerals?

Four ways to write October 8, 2026, including 2026년 10월 8일, on an invitation, form, phone and receipt.
Four notations keep the same year-month-day order.

Korean dates in numerals appear in four common notations, and all four keep the year-month-day order. The one you choose depends on the setting rather than on a rule.

Notation Example Where you see it
Words with units 2026년 10월 8일 letters, invitations, news, schedules
Dots with spaces 2026. 10. 8. official forms and documents
Hyphens (ISO 8601) 2026-10-08 apps, databases, bank statements, file names
Short dotted 26.10.08 receipts, notes, social posts

All four are read the same: 이천이십육 년 시월 팔 일. In the dotted forms, the dot stands in for the unit word. The final dot in 2026. 10. 8. closes the date, and it is part of the official style.

Forms also ask for a date of birth (생년월일) in another short style: six digits for year, month and day, such as 990321 for March 21, 1999. You read it digit by digit or in pairs, and context tells you it is a birth date. Do not add a leading zero in the word form: 2026년 10월 8일 is standard, and 2026년 10월 08일 is not.

Is the weekday written before or after these? That question is next.

Where Does the Weekday Go?

Teaching print showing 10월 8일 (목).
Practise 10월 8일 (목).

The weekday goes after the date, in full or in parentheses. Write 2026년 10월 8일 목요일 or the short form 2026년 10월 8일 (목). In speech the order is the same: 시월 팔 일 목요일이에요.

Style Example Use
Full 2026년 10월 8일 목요일 sentences, letters
Short in parentheses 2026년 10월 8일 (목) invitations, calendars, schedules
Month-day only 10월 8일 (목) announcements

The short form uses one syllable from the weekday name: 월, 화, 수, 목, 금, 토, 일. A calendar printed in Korea shows those seven characters across the top. The full list of weekday words, with pronunciation, is on the page about days of the week in Korean. A trap to watch: the character 일 is both the weekday short form for Sunday and the day unit, so 8일 (일) would be "Sunday the 8th".

How Do You Convert US and UK Dates?

Teaching print showing 2026년 10월 8일.
Practise 2026년 10월 8일.

To convert a numeric date into Korean, identify the source order, name the year, month and day, then reassemble them as year-month-day. The method has five steps, and the drill below uses it.

  1. Find the source order. US dates are month/day/year. UK dates are day/month/year.
  2. Pick out the year. It is the four-digit part (2026).
  3. Pick out the month. In a US date it is the first number. In a UK date it is the second.
  4. Pick out the day. The remaining number.
  5. Assemble and add units. Write [year]년 [month]월 [day]일.
Source Order Korean
10/8/2026 US 2026년 10월 8일
8/10/2026 UK 2026년 10월 8일
3/4/2027 US 2027년 3월 4일
3/4/2027 UK 2027년 4월 3일

The last two rows show the real danger. The string 3/4/2027 means March 4 in the United States and April 3 in the United Kingdom, so you must know the source order before you convert. If a date has a number above 12 in the first slot, such as 25/12/2026, it can only be day-first.

Expert tip: when you are unsure, write the month with a word in your own notes (4 April, not 4/4) before you convert. The Korean unit words 월 and 일 then remove all doubt, because they label each number.

Several web tools convert numbers to Korean words, and the Korean converters page lists the number converter. Use any tool as a check, not as a replacement for knowing the order. Next, dates inside full sentences.

Dates in Everyday Sentences

A date becomes useful when it sits inside a sentence about a plan, a deadline or a birthday. The particle 에 marks the date as the time of an event, just as it marks a clock time, and the particle 은/는 turns the date into the topic.

Sentence Meaning
시험은 십일월 십오 일이에요. The exam is on November 15.
시월 구 일에 만나요. Let's meet on October 9.
제 생일은 삼월 이십일 일이에요. My birthday is March 21.
한글날은 시월 구 일이에요. Hangul Day is 9 October.
마감일은 십이월 삼십일 일이에요. The deadline is December 31.

Hangul Day (한글날) falls on 9 October in South Korea, and it celebrates the alphabet you are learning on this site. The sentence 한글날은 시월 구 일이에요 is therefore a fact you can check on any Korean calendar.

Notice the difference in particles. In 시월 구 일에 만나요 the 에 means "on that date". In 시험은 십일월 십오 일이에요 the date is a predicate with 이에요, so no 에 appears. A reliable test: if the date answers "when?", add 에 after a verb of action; if the date is the thing being named, use 이에요/예요.

How Do You Say a Range of Dates?

To say a range of dates, use 부터 (from) and 까지 (until): 시월 일 일부터 시월 오 일까지 means "from October 1 to October 5". The particles attach directly to the day unit, with no space before them.

Pattern Example Meaning
A부터 B까지 시월 일 일부터 오 일까지 from October 1 to the 5th
A부터 B까지, weekdays 월요일부터 금요일까지 Monday to Friday
A부터, start point only 올해부터 from this year on

When the second date is in the same month, speakers drop the repeated month: 시월 일 일부터 오 일까지. This shortcut is the date version of "October 1 to 5". You will meet the pattern on holiday announcements, leave forms and travel bookings.

Birth Dates and Birthdays

The word for a birth date is 생년월일 (saengnyeonworil), which literally means "birth year-month-day". The word shows the same order as the Korean date format. The birthday as an event is 생일, as in 제 생일은 삼월 이십일 일이에요. Forms usually ask for 생년월일 and expect 1999년 3월 21일 or 1999. 03. 21., and sometimes the six-digit style 990321.

Notice that 생년월일 is built from four syllables you already know: 생 (birth), 년 (year), 월 (month) and 일 (day). Learning the unit words once therefore gives you the forms vocabulary as well. Birthdays have their own question patterns, which the page on asking the date covers with a dialogue.

Common Mistakes and Fixes

Six errors cover most wrong Korean dates. Read the wrong form first, then the fix.

  1. Using month-first order. Wrong: 10월 8일 2026년. Fix: 2026년 10월 8일.
  2. Using native numbers. Wrong: 열 월 여덟 일. Fix: 시월 팔 일.
  3. Saying 육월 or 십월. Wrong: 육월, 십월. Fix: 유월, 시월.
  4. Adding a leading zero in the word form. Wrong: 2026년 10월 08일. Fix: 2026년 10월 8일.
  5. Putting the weekday first. Wrong: 목요일 2026년 10월 8일. Fix: 2026년 10월 8일 목요일.
  6. Confusing a month name with a month count. 시월 means October, a name on the calendar, while 열 달 means ten months, a length of time. Fix: use 월 for names and 달 or 개월 for counts, as explained on the 달 and 개월 page.

Honest limits. English-language contexts in Korea, such as airline tickets and international forms, sometimes show month-first or day-first dates. A few Korean schedules also write the date as 8일 (목) with no month because the month is the page title. This lesson covers the standard Korean-language format.

Practice Set

Answer each item before you read the answer line.

  1. Write "March 21, 1999" in Korean order.
  2. Say "June 6" in Korean.
  3. Convert the UK date 8/10/2026 into Korean order.
  4. Say the date 2027년 4월 3일 aloud.
  5. Correct the mistake: 십월 이십오 일.
  6. Add the weekday: October 8, 2026 is a Thursday.

Answers:

  1. 1999년 3월 21일, spoken 천구백구십구 년 삼월 이십일 일.
  2. 유월 육 일, written 6월 6일.
  3. 2026년 10월 8일, because the UK order is day, month, year.
  4. 이천이십칠 년 사월 삼 일.
  5. 시월 이십오 일. Replace 십월 with 시월.
  6. 2026년 10월 8일 목요일, or 2026년 10월 8일 (목).

If you got four or more, you are ready to move on.

What to Learn Next

You now know the Korean date format: year, month and day with 년, 월 and 일, the weekday last. Continue in this order:

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 2026.10.08 correct?

Yes. Dots between year, month and day are common on receipts, social posts and notes, and they keep the year-month-day order. Official forms often add spaces and a final dot (2026. 10. 8.), and apps and databases prefer hyphens (2026-10-08). All of them read the same: 이천이십육 년 시월 팔 일.

How do I say a date aloud?

Read the year as a full Sino-Korean number, then the month, then the day, each with its unit: 이천이십육 년 시월 팔 일. In daily speech you usually drop the year and say just the month and day: 시월 팔 일. Add the weekday last if you need it: 시월 팔 일 목요일.

Where does the weekday go?

After the day. Write 2026년 10월 8일 목요일, or use the short form in parentheses, 2026년 10월 8일 (목), which is common on invitations, schedules and calendars. In speech it also comes last: 시월 팔 일 목요일이에요. A weekday-first order like English "Thursday, October 8" is not used.

How do I write the date in a letter?

Write the full date with 년, 월 and 일, as in 2026년 10월 8일, usually at the end of a formal letter next to the signature. Keep spaces between the units and use no leading zero: 2026년 10월 8일, not 2026년 10월 08일.

Does the year always come first in Korean dates?

Almost always. Korean writes and says dates from largest to smallest, so the year leads whenever it is stated. When the year is clear from context, speakers start with the month: 10월 8일. Month-first numeric dates such as 10/8/2026 appear mainly in English-language contexts and in international forms.
