Follow these steps. Each one tells you what you should see.
- Read the question and say any Korean text aloud once. You should see four choices.
- Pick one choice by click, tap or by pressing 1, 2, 3 or 4. The Check button turns active.
- Select Check. You see "Correct" or "Not quite", the right answer and a one-sentence reason. Select Next.
- After question 15, read the summary. It shows how many answers were correct in this session and links to the family words lesson and the deck for the questions you missed.
Question order and choice order change every session, so a retake is never the same sequence. The older-sibling questions always say whether the speaker is a man or a woman, because the answer depends on it.
What Does This Korean Family Members Quiz Cover?
The quiz has 15 questions. Four ask who says which older-sibling word, two compare the casual and formal words for parents, six ask what a family word means, and three ask you to name a relative from a description. The words are 형, 누나, 오빠, 언니, 어머니, 아버지, 할머니, 동생, 부모님, 외할머니, 이모, 외삼촌, 막내, 남편 and 딸.
| Question type | Count | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Who says which older-sibling word? | 4 | A man calls his older sister: 누나 |
| Casual or formal parent word | 2 | 어머니 versus 엄마 |
| What does this word mean? | 6 | What is 할머니 (halmeoni)? |
| Which word names this relative? | 3 | Your mother's sister: 이모 |
The lesson behind the quiz is korean family members, which lists 40 words with Revised Romanization, audio and an example sentence. The quiz uses 15 of them, chosen from the parents, siblings and wider family groups.
How Is the Korean Family Members Quiz Scored?
The quiz gives one point for each of the 15 questions you answer correctly on the first try in the current session. At the end it shows a line such as "You answered 12 of 15 correctly in this session". There is no timer, no streak and no ranking, so you can slow down and say each answer aloud.
The count is not a CEFR level, a TOPIK level or a measure of fluency. It only shows what you recalled today. Your answers and score stay in your browser and disappear when you close the tab, unless you choose to save progress on your own device. If you miss an older-sibling question, check who is speaking in the prompt first.
Who Says Which Word for an Older Brother or Sister?
Korean has four words for older siblings, and the right one depends on the speaker, not the person addressed. They are also used for close older friends.
| Speaker | Older brother | Older sister |
|---|---|---|
| A man | 형 (hyeong) | 누나 (nuna) |
| A woman | 오빠 (oppa) | 언니 (eonni) |
Ask yourself two questions in order: is the speaker a man or a woman, and is the older person a brother or a sister? The answer is then fixed.
Which Family Words Come in Casual and Formal Pairs?
Mother and father each have a warm everyday word and a more formal one. Adults use the everyday words at home, and the formal words when they speak about their family to teachers, bosses or strangers. The other words in the table have one form that works in both settings.
| Meaning | Everyday | Formal | Revised Romanization |
|---|---|---|---|
| mother | 엄마 | 어머니 | eomma; eomeoni |
| father | 아빠 | 아버지 | appa; abeoji |
| parents | — | 부모님 | bumonim |
| grandmother | — | 할머니 | halmeoni |
| grandfather | — | 할아버지 | harabeoji |
The prefix 외 marks the mother's side, so 외할머니 (oehalmeoni) is the mother's mother. The prefix 친 marks the father's side, so 친할머니 (chinhalmeoni) is the father's mother. Aunts and uncles split the same way: 고모 (gomo) is the father's sister, 이모 (imo) is the mother's sister, 삼촌 (samchon) is the father's brother and 외삼촌 (oesamchon) is the mother's brother, though in casual speech many people say 삼촌 for either uncle.

Tips before You Start
- Ask whether the speaker is a man or a woman before you choose an older-sibling word.
- Learn the casual and formal pairs together: 엄마 and 어머니, 아빠 and 아버지.
- Use the prefixes: 친 for the father's side and 외 for the mother's side.
- Say each word aloud. The tense consonants in 오빠 and 딸 are easier to recall once you have heard them.
Which Mistakes Does the Korean Family Members Quiz Catch?
Four errors cover most misses.
- A man using 오빠 for his older brother. Only a woman says it.
- A man using 언니, or a woman using 누나. Match the speaker to the word.
- Answering 이모 for the father's sister, which is 고모.
- Using 엄마 and 아빠 in formal speech where 어머니 and 아버지 fit better.

What Does This Quiz Not Do?
The quiz covers 15 common family words. It does not test in-law terms, titles for a spouse's relatives, or the full set of cousin and nephew words. It does not test how to address someone else's family. Real usage also depends on the family and the region. All Korean text in the questions and answers was generated and is waiting for review by a Korean reviewer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Korean have four words for older siblings?
Korean marks both the speaker's sex and the older person's sex. A man says 형 for a brother and 누나 for a sister, and a woman says 오빠 and 언니. English has only brother and sister, so learners need to check who is speaking.
Does the quiz use audio?
Some questions have a replay button for the Korean word. The older-sibling questions have no clip, because playing the answer would give it away. If a clip is missing, the question still works as text.
Can I call a friend 오빠 or 언니?
Yes, with a close older friend, if both of you are comfortable with it. Women say 오빠 and 언니, and men say 형 and 누나. In many settings a name plus 씨 is safer, especially with people you have just met. The quiz tests the family meaning.
Does the quiz include in-law words?
No. The quiz covers common family words, such as parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts and uncles. In-law terms follow separate rules and are not in this version. The full family words lesson covers more relatives and their uses, with audio and example sentences.
Is the quiz free?
Yes. The quiz is free, needs no account and runs in your browser on a phone, tablet or computer. Nothing you answer is uploaded to a server. If you choose to save progress, it is stored on your own device only, and you can delete it in the settings at any time.
Retake the Korean Family Members Quiz
Retake the korean family members quiz once you can name the right older-sibling word for a man and for a woman without stopping. The reason line for each question is also a mini-lesson, so reading it twice often helps more than a fast retake. When the family words feel easy, move on to fruits.
