Follow these steps. Each one tells you what you should see.
- Read the question and say any Korean text aloud once. You should see four choices.
- Pick one choice by click, tap or by pressing 1, 2, 3 or 4. The Check button turns active.
- Select Check. You see "Correct" or "Not quite", the right answer and a one-sentence reason. Select Next.
- After question 15, read the summary. It shows how many answers were correct in this session and links to the Korean dishes lesson and the deck for the questions you missed.
Question order and choice order change every session, so a retake is never the same sequence. Dish names are given with Revised Romanization in the prompts, and the reason line shows the spoken form where it differs from the spelling.
What Does This Korean Food Quiz Cover?
The quiz has 15 questions. Nine ask what a dish is, four ask you to match a description to a dish, and two ask about menu words. The dishes are 비빔밥, 불고기, 김밥, 떡볶이, 냉면, 삼겹살, 김치, 볶음밥, 라면, 잡채, 미역국 and 삼계탕. The menu words are 밥, 찌개 and 반찬.
| Question type | Count | Example |
|---|---|---|
| What is this dish? | 9 | What is 비빔밥 (bibimbap)? |
| Which dish fits this description? | 4 | Which dish is grilled marinated beef? |
| Menu words | 2 | 밥 (bap), 반찬 (banchan) |
The lesson behind the quiz is korean dishes names, which lists 40 dishes and menu words with Revised Romanization, audio and an example sentence. The quiz uses 15 of them.
How Is the Korean Food Quiz Scored?
The quiz gives one point for each of the 15 questions you answer correctly on the first try in the current session. At the end it shows a line such as "You answered 12 of 15 correctly in this session". There is no timer, no streak and no ranking, so you can slow down and say each answer aloud.
The count is not a CEFR level, a TOPIK level or a measure of fluency. It only shows what you recalled today. Your answers and score stay in your browser and disappear when you close the tab, unless you choose to save progress on your own device. A missed question often points to a building block, such as 볶음 or 비빔, and the reason line names it.
Which Building Blocks Make up Korean Dish Names?
Many dish names join two short parts: a cooking method or main ingredient, and a base word such as rice, soup or noodles. Learn the parts and you can guess most menu items.
| Part | Revised Romanization | Meaning | Found in |
|---|---|---|---|
| 밥 | bap | cooked rice; a meal | 비빔밥, 김밥, 볶음밥 |
| 고기 | gogi | meat | 불고기 |
| 국 | guk | soup | 미역국 |
| 찌개 | jjigae | stew | 김치찌개 |
| 면 | myeon | noodles | 냉면, 라면 |
| 비빔 | bibim | mixing (from 비비다) | 비빔밥 |
| 볶음 | bokkeum | stir-fried | 볶음밥 |
| 김 | gim | seaweed (laver) | 김밥 |
So 불고기 is 불 (fire) plus 고기 (meat), and 김밥 is seaweed plus rice. The two rice dishes 비빔밥 (mixed rice) and 볶음밥 (fried rice) look alike on a menu, and only these parts tell them apart.
Which Dish Names Are Said Differently from How They Are Spelled?
Four dish names in the quiz need care when you say them. In three of them a plain consonant becomes tense after a final stop sound. 볶음밥 is the contrast: its ㅂ stays plain.
| Spelling | Sounds like | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| 볶음밥 | [보끔밥] | The final ㄱ of 볶 moves forward, and the ㅂ of 밥 stays plain. |
| 떡볶이 | [떡뽀끼] | The ㅂ after a final ㄱ becomes tense [ㅃ], and the double ㄲ of 볶 moves onto 이 as [끼]. |
| 삼겹살 | [삼겹쌀] | The ㅅ after a final ㅂ becomes a tense [ㅆ]. |
| 미역국 | [미역꾹] | The ㄱ after a final ㄱ becomes a tense [ㄲ]. |
Revised Romanization writes the spelling, not the tense sound: tteokbokki, samgyeopsal, miyeokguk. Learn the spoken form from the audio, not from the romanization.

Tips before You Start
- Break dish names into parts: 불 + 고기, 비빔 + 밥, 김 + 밥. The parts give the meaning.
- Learn 고기, 밥, 국, 면 and 찌개 as building blocks first. They appear in dozens of dishes.
- Do not learn the romanization alone. Say the dish aloud, and listen for the tense sounds in 떡볶이 and 삼겹살.
- When two dishes look similar, ask what the first part means: 비빔 is mixing and 볶음 is stir-frying.
Which Mistakes Does the Korean Food Quiz Catch?
Four errors cover most misses.
- Thinking 김치 is a soup. It is fermented vegetables, and the soup is 김치찌개.
- Confusing 비빔밥 (mixed rice) with 볶음밥 (fried rice).
- Mixing 국 (clear soup) with 찌개 (thick stew).
- Saying 떡볶이 as written, without the tense sounds in [떡뽀끼].

What Does This Quiz Not Do?
The quiz covers 12 dishes and three menu words. It does not test ordering phrases, ingredients, drinks, desserts or table etiquette. It does not teach regional variations of a dish. Names on real menus may use spellings that differ from the standard ones. All Korean text in the questions and answers was generated and is waiting for review by a Korean reviewer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the food quiz teach word parts?
Because most dish names are made of short parts, and knowing them lets you read an unfamiliar menu. If you know 면 is noodles and 찌개 is stew, you can guess the type of a new dish. The reason lines point out the parts, so the pattern builds as you go.
Does the quiz use audio?
Most questions have a replay button for the Korean word or phrase. Questions where playing the dish name would give away the answer have no clip. If a clip is missing, the question still works as text.
Is kimchi a soup or a side dish?
It is a side dish of fermented vegetables, most often napa cabbage, and it is eaten with rice. Soups and stews that use kimchi have their own names, such as 김치찌개. The quiz has one question on this point because it is a common beginner error.
Which dishes are not in the quiz?
The quiz leaves out many dishes, including street snacks such as 순대 and 호떡, grilled fish, dumplings and desserts. The full Korean dishes lesson lists 40 dishes and menu words in groups, with audio and an example sentence for each one.
Is the quiz free?
Yes. The quiz is free, needs no account and runs in your browser on a phone, tablet or computer. Nothing you answer is uploaded to a server. If you choose to save progress, it is stored on your own device only, and you can delete it in the settings at any time.
Retake the Korean Food Quiz
Retake the korean food quiz once you can explain what 비빔, 볶음, 국, 찌개 and 면 mean. The reason line for each question is also a mini-lesson, so reading it twice often helps more than a fast retake. When the dishes feel easy, move on to the numbers quiz.
