Korean Boy Names: Popular Names and What They Mean

Korean boy names are usually two syllables, and common recent patterns use syllables such as 준, 우, 현 and 민, though popularity shifts every year. This page shows twenty example names with their Revised Romanization and one possible meaning, explains how the names are built, and points to the official source for yearly statistics. A boy's full name is a one-syllable family name followed by a two-syllable given name, and each given-name syllable usually stands for a hanja (a Chinese character) or a native Korean word.

The page is written for learners, parents-to-be, writers and fans who want to read, say and understand Korean boy names. It does not rank names, because a rank is only true for one year and one list. It shows the patterns instead: which syllables recur, how brothers can share a syllable, how the Hangul maps to common English spellings such as Jun, June and Hyun, and where to find the court's published counts. For girls' names, see Korean girl names. For the way meaning is built into a name, see Korean name meaning.

Which Korean boy names are popular?
Which Korean boy names are popular?

Popular Korean boy names change from year to year, so the safest answer is a set of examples that have been widely used in recent years, not a fixed top ten. The table shows ten of them. Names such as 민준, 서준 and 도윤 have often appeared near the top of recent published lists, but check the current year before you quote a rank.

Name RR Spoken One possible hanja reading
민준 Minjun [민준] 敏 (quick) + 俊 (excellent)
서준 Seojun [서준] 瑞 (auspicious) + 俊 (excellent)
도윤 Doyun [도윤] 道 (way) + 潤 (rich, glossy)
예준 Yejun [예준] 藝 (art) + 俊 (excellent)
시우 Siu [시우] 時 (time) + 雨 (rain), "timely rain"
하준 Hajun [하준] 河 (river) + 俊 (excellent)
지호 Jiho [지호] 智 (wisdom) + 浩 (vast)
준우 Junu [주누] 俊 (excellent) + 宇 (house, universe)
현우 Hyeonu [혀누] 賢 (wise) + 宇 (house, universe)
도현 Dohyeon [도현] 道 (way) + 賢 (wise)

Each hanja pair is labelled "one possible reading". A Hangul name does not say which characters a family chose, so two boys called 민준 may have different hanja and different meanings. Treat the right-hand column as an example of how a meaning can be built, not as the meaning of any real person's name.

What Syllables Are Common in Korean Boy Names?

A small group of syllables appears in many recent boys' names. This is a pattern, not a count: it describes what you will often see, and you should check the current official lists before you claim a share. The syllables below come from the ten names above.

Syllable RR Often found in Characters that can be behind it
준 jun 민준, 서준, 예준, 하준, 준우 俊 (excellent), 峻 (high), 準 (standard)
우 u 시우, 준우, 현우 宇 (house, universe), 雨 (rain), 優 (excellent)
현 hyeon 현우, 도현 賢 (wise), 炫 (bright), 玄 (dark, deep)
민 min 민준 敏 (quick), 民 (people), 珉 (fine stone)
서 seo 서준 瑞 (auspicious), 書 (book), 序 (order)
도 do 도윤, 도현 道 (way), 度 (degree), 都 (capital)
하 ha 하준 河 (river), 夏 (summer), 荷 (lotus)
윤 yun 도윤 潤 (rich, glossy), 允 (sincere)
지 ji 지호 智 (wisdom), 知 (to know), 志 (will)
호 ho 지호 浩 (vast), 昊 (sky), 好 (good)

Three habits stand out.

  1. Two syllables are the norm. One-syllable and three-syllable given names exist but are rare.
  2. One syllable is often shared. 준 appears in five of the ten names, and 우 in three. Many names are built by pairing a favourite syllable with a second one: 민준, 서준, 예준 and 하준 all end in 준.
  3. The second syllable often ends in a nasal or a vowel. 준, 윤, 현 and 호 end in ㄴ or a vowel, which gives many boys' names a round, steady sound.

The same syllables appear in girls' names too, so the syllable alone does not tell you a person's gender. That is covered below.

What Do Korean Boy Names Mean?

Korean boy names mean what the characters or words behind them mean. A name falls into one of two groups: hanja-based names, which are the large majority, and native Korean names, which are a smaller group.

Hanja-Based Names

In a hanja-based name, each syllable is matched with a Chinese character that carries a meaning. The meaning is a wish: parents choose characters for qualities such as wisdom, strength, brightness or good character. The table gives readings for the ten names above, all labelled as one possible reading.

Name Characters Syllable by syllable One possible meaning
민준 敏俊 quick + excellent quick and talented
서준 瑞俊 auspicious + excellent a lucky, talented boy
도윤 道潤 way + rich, glossy one who walks a rich path
예준 藝俊 art + excellent talented in the arts
시우 時雨 time + rain timely rain
하준 河俊 river + excellent a talented, flowing river
지호 智浩 wisdom + vast wise and broad-minded
준우 俊宇 excellent + house, universe a talented, wide world
현우 賢宇 wise + house, universe a wise, wide world
도현 道賢 way + wise a wise way

One sound can be written with many characters. The Sino-Korean syllable 준 may stand for 俊, 峻 or 準, and 우 for 宇, 雨 or 優. That is why a list that gives one meaning per Hangul name is guessing. The only way to know the meaning of a particular person's name is to ask which hanja the family used. Parents choose from an official list of characters allowed in names (인명용 한자), so the meanings available are limited to that list.

Native Korean Names

A native Korean name uses a pure Korean word, with no hanja behind it. The meaning is open to anyone who knows the word, and the name is the word. Native names are less common for boys than hanja-based ones, and many of them are used for girls too.

Name RR Meaning
하늘 Haneul sky
한결 Hangyeol steady, always the same
바다 Bada sea
보람 Boram a worthwhile result, a sense of reward
가람 Garam river (an older word)
푸름 Pureum greenness, blue
한솔 Hansol a big pine (한 "great" + 솔 "pine")
누리 Nuri world
마루 Maru summit, ridge
새롬 Saerom fresh, new

These twenty names are examples chosen to show how names are built. They are not a ranking of the twenty most popular names, and a name on this list is not recommended over one that is not.

Why Do Korean Brothers Share a Syllable?

Brothers share a syllable when a family follows a generation-name custom, or when parents like a sound. In the older custom, a 돌림자 (dollimja, "turning character") is one syllable that all members of one generation in a family share. Cousins of the same generation get it, and the next generation receives a different one. In a family that follows the custom, brothers named 현우 and 현준 would share 현.

Pattern Example What it is
Shared generation syllable 현우, 현준 A family or clan rule; cousins can share it too
Echoed sound 서준, 서우 A modern style choice, with no genealogy rule
Same ending 민준, 서준 A fashion for a popular final syllable

Treat any such rule as a family tradition, not a national one. Many modern families do not follow a generation syllable at all, and the shared sound in a pair of brothers may simply be the parents' taste. The page on Korean name meaning explains the 돌림자 in more detail.

How Do Parents Choose a Korean Boy's Name?

Parents usually choose the sound first and the characters second. They say the full name aloud with the surname in front, check that it flows, and then match the sound to characters whose meanings express a wish, such as wisdom, talent, strength or a steady character. In some families the choice is narrower. A clan that keeps a genealogy book (족보) may assign a generation syllable (항렬자) to each generation, and the custom has traditionally been followed most closely along the male line. A boy in such a family takes the assigned syllable and chooses only the other one.

Some families also ask a naming specialist, who may use the baby's birth date and time to suggest characters. It is a family choice and not a rule, and no national system turns a birthday into a name. The page on Korean name meaning explains these steps and shows how to look up the characters in a name.

How Have Korean Boys' Names Changed over Time?

Boys' names follow fashions, and a name can sound young or old to a Korean ear. The impression below is general. It is not a statistic, and a given family may break every pattern.

Feel Example names RR What you notice
Older generations 철수, 영수, 영호 Cheolsu, Yeongsu, Yeongho Short, plain names that now feel traditional
Middle generations 성민, 지훈, 동현, 민수 Seongmin, Jihun, Donghyeon, Minsu Two even syllables, often with a nasal ending
Recent years 민준, 서준, 도윤, 하준 Minjun, Seojun, Doyun, Hajun Many shared syllables, especially 준 and 우

A name from an older generation, such as 철수, is also used in language textbooks as the stock example of a Korean boy's name, which is why many learners meet it first. The same drift explains why a Korean listener can sometimes guess a man's rough age from his name, though only as a hint. If you are choosing a name for a character or a story, pick the fashion of the right decade and check the sound with a Korean speaker.

How Do You Pronounce Korean Boy Names?

You pronounce a Korean name syllable by syllable, with each syllable about the same length, and you read the vowels and consonants as Hangul spells them. The table shows the spoken form of the ten popular names and the most common slip for each. For more on sounds, see Korean names pronunciation.

Name RR Say it as Watch out for
민준 Minjun min-jun ㅈ is unaspirated, with little air; do not say "chun"
서준 Seojun seo-jun ㅓ is unrounded; it is not "so"
도윤 Doyun do-yun 윤 starts with a quick y glide
예준 Yejun ye-jun 예 is "ye", one quick syllable
시우 Siu si-u two clear vowels: si + u
하준 Hajun ha-jun ㅎ is a light breath, not a hard "h"
지호 Jiho ji-ho the ㅎ stays light
준우 Junu ju-nu the ㄴ moves to the next syllable: [주누]
현우 Hyeonu hyeo-nu ㅕ is "yeo", not "yo": [혀누]
도현 Dohyeon do-hyeon ㅕ again; keep it unrounded

Four points help English speakers most.

  • Spread the stress evenly. English stresses one syllable. Korean gives each syllable almost the same length and weight, so say 민-준 and not MIN-jun.
  • ㅈ is unaspirated. The ㅈ in 준 is said with little air, so it sits between English "j" and "ch". It is not the same letter as ㅊ, which is aspirated.
  • ㅓ and ㅕ are unrounded. Keep your lips relaxed. If you round them, 서준 sounds like 소준, which is a different name.
  • A final ㄴ links forward. When a syllable that ends in ㄴ meets 우, the ㄴ is said with the next syllable, so 준우 is [주누] and 현우 is [혀누].

Here are two sentences that you will often need.

제 이름은 민준이에요.

je ireumeun minjunieyo.

My name is Minjun.

이름이 뭐예요?

ireumi mwoyeyo?

What is your name?

The first is said [제 이르믄 민주니에요], because the final ㄴ of 민준 links to 이에요. The second is said [이르미 뭐예요]. After a name that ends in a vowel, the copula is 예요, so 지호 gives 지호예요. After a name that ends in a consonant, it is 이에요, so 도윤 gives 도윤이에요 [도유니에요].

What Changes When a Surname Is in Front?

Most surnames cause no change, so 김민준 is said [김민준] and 이준우 is said [이주누]. Two changes are common. If the surname ends in ㄱ and the given name begins with ㅎ, the two sounds merge into an aspirated ㅋ: 박현우 is said [바켜누]. If the surname ends in ㄱ and the next syllable begins with ㅁ or ㄴ, the ㄱ becomes ㅇ: 박민준 is said [방민준]. When a name matters, ask the person to say it.

How Do Korean Boy Names Look in English?

Official Revised Romanization (RR) spells the sound of the name: 민준 is Minjun, 현우 is Hyeonu and 도윤 is Doyun. The rule allows a hyphen between given-name syllables, as in Min-jun, to avoid misreading. In practice, people choose their own spelling for passports and social media, so you will see many variants.

Hangul RR Variants you may see
준 jun Jun, June, Joon
우 u U, Woo, Oo
현 hyeon Hyeon, Hyun
서 seo Suh, Seo, Sur
도 do Do, Doh
윤 yun Yun, Yoon
호 ho Ho, Hoh

Because variants differ, always ask how a person spells their name before you write it. The page on the romanization of Korean names explains the rule in full, and your name in Korean shows how to write your own name in Hangul.

Are Korean Boy Names Unisex?

Some are. Many native names and many hanja syllables are used for both boys and girls, and the Hangul spelling does not show gender. Names such as 하늘 (sky), 보람 and 가람 are used for both, and a name such as 지우 or 시우 can belong to a boy or a girl. A name that is more common for boys today may become common for girls later, and fashions move both ways. When you need to know a person's gender, ask. For names that more often belong to girls, see Korean girl names.

Where Do Popularity Statistics Come From?

The official source is the Supreme Court of Korea (대법원), which keeps the family-register records and has published counts of the names given to newborns. News stories each year then turn those counts into "most popular names" lists. For the current figures, check the Supreme Court's published statistics for the year you need, because this page gives no counts.

A few habits make a list easier to trust.

  • Check the year. A list from five years ago may be out of date.
  • Check who is counted. Some lists count all newborns and some count boys only.
  • Check the spelling. One name may appear twice if the hanja differ, so a list can count 민준 as one name or as several.
  • Prefer the primary source. A news story is a second-hand report. The court's own table is the first-hand one.

How Do You Talk about a Boy's Name in Korean?

You can ask about a name politely and answer in a short pattern. Here are three sentences for a meeting or a class.

민준이라고 불러 주세요.

minjunirago bulleo juseyo.

Please call me Minjun.

이름이 좋아요.

ireumi joayo.

Your name is nice.

어떤 한자를 써요?

eotteon hanjareul sseoyo?

Which hanja do you use?

The first is said [민주니라고 불러 주세요], where 민준 plus 이라고 links as [민주니라고]. The second is said [이르미 조아요]. The third is said [어떤 한자를 써요]. When you meet someone, 이름이 좋아요 is a safe compliment. Ask about their hanja only after you know them a little, because not every person can answer. To call a friend by name, add 아 or 야, as the lesson on Korean name endings explains, and see the Korean names hub for every name topic.

Can You Choose a Korean Boy Name for Yourself?

Yes, if you want a Korean-style name for class, a hobby or a story, and it helps to be clear that it is a chosen name and not a registered one. A simple way to build one has four steps.

  1. Pick a surname. 김, 이 and 박 are the most familiar to English speakers, and each is a real family name.
  2. Pick a two-syllable given name. Choose from the ten popular names above, or from the native names in the second table, such as 하늘 or 한결.
  3. Say the full name aloud. Check the surname joint, as in 박민준 [방민준], so you know what it sounds like.
  4. Ask a Korean teacher or friend. They can warn you if the sound is awkward or if a name is strongly tied to an older generation.

If you want to write your own name in Hangul instead, the page on your name in Korean walks you through it, and my name is in Korean teaches the ready-made sentences.

What Mistakes Should You Avoid with Korean Boy Names?

These errors come up most.

  1. Treating a list as a ranking. A "top names" list is true for one year and one source. Do not quote it as a fixed fact.
  2. Reading a meaning off the Hangul. 민준 is a sound. The meaning belongs to the characters behind it, so a site that prints one meaning per Hangul name is guessing.
  3. Guessing gender from the sound. Many names are used for both boys and girls. Ask, or use the person's own words.
  4. Rounding ㅓ and ㅕ. Saying "sojun" for 서준 changes the name to 소준, which is a different name.
  5. Aspirating ㅈ. 준 is not "chun". ㅈ and ㅊ are two different letters.
  6. Splitting a name wrongly. In 민준, the family name is not 민. The surname comes first, as in 김민준, and the given name is the two syllables after it.

Quick Practice

Read each name aloud and say whether it is a native word or hanja-based, using what you learned above.

  • 바다: a native word that means sea.
  • 서준: usually hanja-based, with several possible readings.
  • 한결: a native word that means steady.
  • 현우: usually hanja-based, and said [혀누].

Then say your own name with the pattern from the pronunciation section: 제 이름은 ___예요 after a vowel, or ___이에요 after a consonant.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the year and the list. Names such as 민준, 서준 and 도윤 have often appeared near the top of recent lists, but ranks change every year. For the current answer, check the Supreme Court of Korea's published statistics, or a news report that names the year and the source.

Are Korean Boy Names Unisex?

Some are. Many native names, such as 하늘 and 보람, and many hanja syllables are used for both boys and girls. The Hangul spelling does not show gender, so you cannot always tell a person's gender from a name. If it matters, ask the person politely.

Why Do Brothers Share a Syllable?

In some families, all cousins of one generation share a generation syllable (돌림자), so brothers named 현우 and 현준 share 현. Other parents simply like a sound and echo it in both names. Many modern families follow no rule at all.

How Do I Pronounce 현?

Say "hyeon": a light h, then the glide "yeo", then n. The vowel ㅕ is unrounded, so the lips stay relaxed, and "Hyun" is a common spelling of the same sound. Before a vowel it links forward, so 현우 is said [혀누].
