Months in Korean Flashcards: Study the 25 Cards

일월 · irwol · January · Months in Korean Flashcards
Months in Korean Flashcards

A Korean month is just a Sino-Korean number plus 월, so the whole set is easy to build once you know two exceptions. The lesson behind this deck is months in Korean, so read it first if a card is new.

How Do I Use These Flashcards?

Use the deck above in four steps. It works with tap, click or keyboard, and nothing plays until you press an audio button.

  1. Choose a mode. Start with recognition (Hangul to meaning). Switch to recall (meaning to Hangul) or listening (audio to meaning) once recognition feels easy.
  2. Show the answer. Think of the answer first, then press Show answer (or Space). Say the month aloud before you reveal it, and for recall cards try writing it both ways, 3월 and 삼월. Turn on the romanization toggle only if you need it; the 25-card table below always shows it.
  3. Grade yourself. Press Got it if you answered correctly without help, or Not yet if you hesitated or guessed.
  4. Finish the session. A session holds up to 20 cards (you can set 10, 20 or 40). With 25 cards, a first-time learner can split the deck over three days, using the default limit of 10 new cards a day.

The Three Study Modes

Recognition shows the Hangul and asks for the meaning, which trains reading. Recall shows the meaning and asks for the Hangul, which trains remembering; you may type the answer with your Hangul keyboard or just recall it in your head. Listening plays a clip and hides the letters, which trains the ear. Listening mode only uses a card once its audio is approved, and cards without approved audio are skipped in that mode with a note.

Got It and Not Yet

Got it moves a card up one Leitner box, so it comes back later. Not yet sends the card back to box 1, so it returns in the same session or within 10 minutes. The grades are your own judgement; the deck does not score you or claim fluency.

Deck Scope: What Is and Is Not Covered

The deck covers 25 words in four groups: the twelve months (cards 1 to 12), the month words 월 and 달 (13 and 14), the relative months and counting words (이번 달, 다음 달, 지난달, 매달, 한 달) and the date and year words (날짜, 며칠, 몇 월, 달력, 년, 올해). Months are given in Hangul, such as 삼월, and the notes show the numeric form, 3월, that you see on calendars.

What Is Left out of This Deck?

Days of the week are in the days of the week in Korean flashcards, and clock times, today, tomorrow and other time words are in the Korean time expressions flashcards. Holidays such as 설날 and 추석 are left to the holidays deck. The lesson page months in Korean holds the longer list.

All 25 Cards in One Table

All 25 cards appear below in deck order. The table is plain HTML, so you can use it as a drill without the deck: cover the Meaning column, say each entry aloud, then uncover it.

Reading the Table

Hangul is the word. Revised Romanization (RR) is a learning aid, so read the Hangul first and check RR afterwards. RR follows the sound of the word, which is why 일월 is written irwol even though the spelling has ㄹ and ㅇ. The Meaning column gives the English gloss, and the Note column gives a use or sound hint. The last column lists the audio assetId; a second ID marks a slow clip. Cards 6, 11 and 22 have slow clips because their sounds differ most from the spelling.

Usage Notes for These Cards

Months are a Sino-Korean number plus 월. March is 삼월 (3월) and December is 십이월 (12월). In dates you usually write the number, so you see 3월 and 12월 on calendars and read them aloud as 삼월 and 십이월.

Two months are irregular. June is 유월, not 육월, and October is 시월, not 십월. Both drop a final consonant from the number to make the word easier to say.

Ask the date with 몇 월 며칠이에요? The question means What month and day is it? Answer with the month and the day: 시월 구 일이에요 (It is 9 October). Use 오늘 며칠이에요? (What is the date today?) when only the day matters.

월 names a calendar month, while 달 counts months. Use 월 after a Sino-Korean number to name the month, and use 달 with a native number to count them: 한 달 (one month), 세 달 (three months).

Dates run from large to small. A full date puts the year first, then the month, then the day: 2026년 10월 9일 is read 이천이십육 년 시월 구 일. Hangul Day falls on that day: 한글날은 시월 구 일이에요.

Mark a time frame with 에. Use 에 after a named month, as in 삼월에 (in March), and after relative months when you give a time: 다음 달에 여행을 가요 (I go on a trip next month). The word 올해 (this year) is used without 에: 올해 바빠요 (I am busy this year).

Which Sounds Do Not Match the Spelling?

일월 is said [이뤌]. The final ㄹ of 일 links to the vowel of 월 (liaison), so the word sounds like i-rwol. Written 1월, it is still read 일월.

십일월 is said [시비뤌]. Both the ㅂ of 십 and the ㄹ of 일 link to the next vowel. 십이월 is said [시비월], and the same ㅂ links forward.

칠월 and 팔월 are said [치뤌] and [파뤌]. The final ㄹ links to the vowel of 월. 몇 월 is said [며둴]: the ㅊ of 몇 is pronounced as ㄷ and then links.

유월 is said as it is spelled. The word is written without the final ㄱ of 육, so there is no sound change to learn.

What Mistakes Do Learners Make with Months?

  • Saying 육월 or 십월. The correct forms are 유월 and 시월.
  • Counting months with Sino numbers, such as 삼 달. Say 세 달 (three months).
  • Using 한 월 for one month. Say 한 달; 일월 means January.
  • Mixing up 월요일 (Monday) and 월 (month). 일월 is January, and 월요일 is Monday.

The two irregular months cause most of the slips, so give cards 6 and 10 extra passes in recall mode.

How Does the Review Schedule Work?

The deck uses a simplified Leitner system with five boxes. A new card starts in box 1. Each Got it moves it up one box, and each Not yet returns it to box 1. The box sets how long the card waits before it is due again.

Box Wait until the next review
1 same session or 10 minutes
2 1 day
3 3 days
4 7 days
5 21 days

Each session shows due cards first, oldest due first, and then up to 10 new cards a day by default. A deck of 25 cards is introduced over three days at the default of 10 new cards a day, and the later boxes bring each card back at longer gaps. Progress is saved only in this browser, so clearing site data deletes it. Use the export button to save a small JSON file with card IDs, boxes and due dates, and import it on another device. Cultural and Practical Context

The lunar calendar still marks important dates. 설날 falls on the first day of the first lunar month and 추석 on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, so their dates on the solar calendar change each year. Everyday dates and school years follow the solar calendar, which is why this deck uses the solar month names.

Limits of This Deck

The deck holds 25 cards and teaches the month names and counting words, not days of the week or clock times. Another word for three months, 석 달, also exists; the deck uses the common 세 달. The lunar-date remark is stated briefly. All Korean text is generated and was reviewed and signed off by Min-ji Park on 15 October 2026. The audio is generated with text-to-speech and is checked by a Korean teacher before publication, and listening mode uses only cards whose clips are approved.

Next Steps after This Deck

After this deck, move on to the Korean time expressions flashcards to keep the same routine. Go back to the days of the week in Korean flashcards for the earlier material, test yourself with the months in Korean quiz and write the words by hand with the Korean time words worksheet. The months in Korean lesson holds the longer list, the Korean vocabulary flashcards page lists every other deck, and the Korean flashcards hub lists all topics.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is the Difference between 월 and 달?

월 is the month name or number in a date, as in 삼월 or 3월. 달 is the month as a length of time, as in 한 달 (one month), and it is also the word for moon. So you say 삼월에 (in March) but 세 달 동안 (for three months).

How Do I Say in March?

Say 삼월에, or write 3월에. The particle 에 marks the time, just as it does for a day or an hour. The same pattern works for every month: 시월에 is in October and 십이월에 is in December.

How Do I Ask What the Date Is Today?

Ask 오늘 며칠이에요? (What is the date today?). The answer gives only the day: 구 일이에요 (It is the 9th). For the month and day together, ask 몇 월 며칠이에요? and answer 시월 구 일이에요 (It is 9 October).

What Is 며칠 Used For?

며칠 asks for the day of the month or for a number of days. 오늘 며칠이에요? asks for the date, and 며칠 걸려요? asks How many days does it take? The spelling 며칠 stays the same in both questions, so the rest of the sentence tells you which one it is.

Is My Progress Saved If I Close the Page?

Yes, in the same browser on the same device. Card boxes and due dates are stored locally and nothing is sent to a server. Clearing site data, using a private window or switching browsers removes them, so use the export button to keep a backup file. No account is needed.
