Colors in Korean Quiz: 15 Questions with Instant Feedback

This colors in korean quiz has 15 questions on the common colour words, including the noun form (빨강, red) and the adjective form (빨갛다, to be red). Each question gives instant feedback and a one-sentence reason. Many colour mistakes come from using a noun where a describing word is needed, so the quiz tests both. It runs in your browser with no sign-up.

What Does This Colors in Korean Quiz Cover?

The quiz has 15 questions. Four ask which noun names a colour, three test the describing form that goes before a noun or ends a sentence, five ask about 색 and colour words built with it, and three ask for a single colour in a short phrase. Colour nouns appear in two shapes, such as 파랑 and 파란색. Both are correct, and the colors lesson lists the longer -색 forms.

    Question type Count Example
Which colour is this noun? 4 What colour is 파랑?
Describing form and sentence form 3 Which form goes before 가방?
색 and compound colour words 5 하늘색 (haneulsaek)
One colour in a phrase 3 갈색 곰 (galsaek gom)

The lesson behind the quiz is colors in korean, which lists 40 words with Revised Romanization, audio and an example sentence. The quiz uses a core set of them, plus the short noun forms such as 빨강 and 검정.

How Is the Colors in Korean Quiz Scored?

The quiz gives one point for each of the 15 questions you answer correctly on the first try in the current session. At the end it shows a line such as "You answered 12 of 15 correctly in this session". There is no timer, no streak and no ranking, so you can slow down and say each answer aloud.

The count is not a CEFR level, a TOPIK level or a measure of fluency. It only shows what you recalled today. Your answers and score stay in your browser and disappear when you close the tab, unless you choose to save progress on your own device. If you miss a question about 파란 or 파래요, the reason line shows the full change from 파랗다, so you can see where the ㅎ went.

How Do Korean Colour Words Change Shape?

초록색 · choroksaek · green · How do Korean colour words change shape?
How do Korean colour words change shape?

Most basic colours are descriptive verbs: words such as 빨갛다 (ppalgata) mean "to be red". They end in ㅎ, and that ㅎ disappears when an ending is added. The same colour can also be a noun, and the noun is what you use after 은/는 or 이/가 when you name a colour.

Colour Noun Before a noun Polite sentence form Dictionary form
black (another word) 검은색 (geomeunsaek) 검은 (geomeun) 검어요 (geomeoyo) 검다

검정 is the everyday noun for black; it pairs with 검다, and 까맣다 has its own noun, 까망. The first five describing words follow the ㅎ irregular pattern: the ㅎ drops, and before -아요/-어요 the vowel changes (파랗 plus 아요 gives 파래요). The word 검다 is regular, so 검은 and 검어요 keep their shape.

    Which Colour Words Use 색?

色 (색, saek) means colour. Many colour names add it to a base: 파란색 means "blue colour". Adding 색 to a noun or a describing form gives a name you can always use as a noun.

    Korean Revised Romanization Meaning Note
    초록색 choroksaek green said [초록쌕]
    분홍색 bunhongsaek pink Sino-Korean throughout
보라색 borasaek purple from 보라, purple
    갈색 galsaek brown said [갈쌕]
하늘색 haneulsaek sky blue 하늘 means sky
금색 geumsaek gold 금 means gold or metal

A noun with 색 works in any slot that needs a noun, so 갈색 곰 (galsaek gom) is "a brown bear" with no change to the colour word. Only the bare describing words, such as 빨갛다, need the ㅎ rule.

    Tips before You Start

    • Learn each colour as a pair: the noun and the describing word, such as 노랑 and 노랗다.
    • Notice the 색 ending. It can be added to many colour nouns, and it makes a safe noun form when you are unsure.
    • Look at the adjective forms in the colors deck. The ㅎ irregular pattern is the same for every word in the table above.
    • Say the word before you choose. Sound-change cases such as 초록색 [초록쌕] are easier to remember when you hear them.

Which Mistakes Does the Colors in Korean Quiz Catch?

    Four errors cover most misses.

    • Using the noun where a describing form is needed, as in 파랑 가방 instead of 파란 가방.
    • Keeping the ㅎ in 파랗어요 or 노랗은. The ㅎ drops before an ending.
    • Mixing 파랑 and 초록, or 분홍 and 보라, when the English colour word is close in meaning.
    • Treating 검다 like the other describing words. It is regular, so 검어요 keeps its form.

Answer Key for Questions 7 to 15

Prefer to test yourself first? Take the quiz above, then check this table. The first six answers are in the sample questions.

9 What does 색 (saek) mean in 무슨 색을 좋아해요? (museun saegeul joahaeyo?) colour 색 means colour, so the question asks "What colour do you like?"

11 보라색 꽃 (borasaek kkot) means "a ___ flower." purple 보라색 is purple. Pink is 분홍색, a different word.

15 What colour is 금색 (geumsaek)? gold 금 means gold, so 금색 is gold. Silver is 은색.

What Does This Quiz Not Do?

The quiz covers 15 common colour words. It does not cover shades such as light and dark in depth, metals beyond gold, or the five traditional Korean colours (오방색). It does not test the colour adjectives beyond the polite present and the form before a noun. Spoken Korean sometimes uses a different colour word than the textbook one. All Korean text in the questions and answers was generated and is waiting for review by a Korean reviewer.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know the ㅎ irregular pattern for this quiz?

It helps with four questions, but the reason line teaches it. For 파랗다, the ㅎ drops before an ending, so you get 파란 before a noun and 파래요 at the end of a sentence. Reading the explanation once is enough to answer similar questions later.

    Does the quiz use audio?

Most questions have a replay button for the Korean word or phrase. If a clip is missing, the replay button is hidden and the question still works as text.

    Which colours are included?

The quiz uses red, yellow, blue, white, black, green, pink, purple, brown, sky blue and gold. Orange, gray, navy, teal, beige, silver and copper appear only as wrong answers. The full list of 40 colour words is in the colors lesson, with audio and an example sentence for each.

What is the difference between 빨강 and 빨간?

빨강 is the noun, so it names the colour: 빨강을 좋아해요. 빨간 is the form that goes before a noun: 빨간 사과. Using the noun before another noun is the most common mistake in this quiz, which is why several questions test it.

    Is the quiz free?

Yes. The quiz is free, needs no account and runs in your browser on a phone, tablet or computer. Nothing you answer is uploaded to a server. If you choose to save progress, it is stored on your own device only, and you can delete it in the settings at any time.

Retake the Colors in Korean Quiz

Retake the colors in korean quiz once you can turn 파랗다, 노랗다 and 빨갛다 into their noun, noun-modifying and sentence forms without looking. The reason line for each question is also a mini-lesson, so reading it twice often helps more than a fast retake. When the colours feel easy, move on to the days of the week.
