Korean Colors Flashcards: Study the 29 Cards

Korean Colors Flashcards

Each card shows the Hangul, the Revised Romanization (RR), the meaning and an audio button. The words come from the colors in Korean lesson, which also has example sentences.

How Do I Use These Flashcards?

Use the deck above in four steps. It works with tap, click or keyboard, and nothing plays until you press an audio button.

  1. Choose a mode. Start with recognition (Hangul to meaning). Switch to recall (meaning to Hangul) or listening (audio to meaning) once recognition feels easy.
  2. Show the answer. Think of the answer first, then press Show answer (or Space). Say the word aloud before you reveal it. Turn on the romanization toggle only if you need it; the 29-card table below always shows it.
  3. Grade yourself. Press Got it if you answered correctly without help, or Not yet if you hesitated or guessed.
  4. Finish the session. A session holds up to 20 cards (you can set 10, 20 or 40). With 29 cards, a first-time learner can split the deck over three days, using the default limit of 10 new cards a day.

The Three Study Modes

Recognition shows the Hangul and asks for the meaning, which trains reading. Recall shows the meaning and asks for the Hangul, which trains remembering; you may type the answer with your Hangul keyboard or just recall it in your head. Listening plays a clip and hides the letters, which trains the ear. Listening mode only uses a card once its audio is approved, and cards without approved audio are skipped in that mode with a note.

Got It and Not Yet

Got it moves the card up one Leitner box, so it comes back later. Not yet sends the card back to box 1, so it returns in the same session or within 10 minutes. The grades are your own judgement; the deck does not score you or claim fluency.

Deck Scope: What Is and Is Not Covered

The deck covers 29 of the 40 words in the colors lesson: the word for color, the basic colors in their noun form (ending in 색), a few shade colors, metals, four shade words (연한, 진한, 밝은, 어두운) and a few description words such as 투명 and 알록달록.

Which Color Words Are Left out of This Deck?

The lesson words 색깔, 구리색, 무색, 오방색, 청색, 적색, 황색, 백색, 흑색, 색동 and 단청 are not cards here. The five traditional colors are in the colors in Korean lesson.

All 29 Cards in One Table

All 29 cards appear below in deck order. The table is plain HTML, so you can use it as a drill without the deck: cover the Meaning column, say each word aloud, then uncover it.

Reading the Table

Hangul is the word. Revised Romanization (RR) is a learning aid, so try to read the Hangul before you look at it. RR follows the spelling rules of the official system, not every sound change, so it can differ from what you hear. The Meaning column gives the English gloss, and the Note column gives a use or sound hint. The last column lists the audio assetId; a second ID marks a slow clip at 0.8 times the speed. Cards 2-13 are the twelve basic colors in noun form, each ending in 색.

Usage Notes for These Cards

Color nouns end in 색. Add 색 to a color to name it: 하늘색 is sky blue and 갈색 is brown. The lesson sentence 빨간색 사과를 먹어요 means I eat a red apple.

Noun forms and adjective forms differ. The card gives the noun, such as 빨간색 (red). To say it is red, use the adjective 빨개요, not 빨갛어요. Before a noun the form is 빨간.

Shade words go before the color. 연한 파란색 is light blue and 진한 파란색 is dark blue. 밝은 색 is a bright color and 어두운 색 is a dark color.

Ask for a color with 무슨 색. 무슨 색을 좋아해요? means What color do you like? The answer uses the noun: 파란색을 좋아해요.

The green traffic light is 파란불. 파란 can cover blue and green, so the green light for go is called 파란불. Leaves are usually 초록색.

Which Sounds Do Not Match the Spelling?

Some of these words are said differently from how they are written. The table follows the standard pronunciation rules (표준 발음법) of the 국립국어원 (National Institute of Korean Language).

Spelling Sounds like What changes
갈색 [갈쌕] After ㄹ in a Sino-Korean word, ㅅ becomes tense [ㅆ].
초록색 [초록쌕] After the final ㄱ of 록, ㅅ becomes tense [ㅆ].
청록색 [청녹쌕] ㄹ after ㅇ is said [ㄴ], and ㅅ after ㄱ is tense.
흑백 [흑빽] After a final ㄱ, ㅂ becomes tense [ㅃ].
알록달록 [알록딸록] After the final ㄱ of 록, ㄷ becomes tense [ㄸ].
검은색 [거믄색] The final ㅁ of 검 links to the vowel of 은.
밝은 [발근] Of the two final letters in ㄺ, the ㄱ moves to the next syllable.

Revised Romanization writes the double letters (ㄲ, ㄸ, ㅃ, ㅆ, ㅉ as kk, tt, pp, ss, jj) but does not show tensing caused by a neighbouring sound, so galsaek and choroksaek hide the [ㅆ] you hear in 갈색 and 초록색. Listen to the clip as well as reading the romanization.

What Mistakes Do Learners Make with Color Words?

  • Writing the adjective for the noun. Say 빨간색 for the color name and 빨개요 for it is red.
  • Saying 빨갛어요. The correct polite form is 빨개요.
  • Using 파란색 and 초록색 as the same color.
  • Forgetting 색 in the noun. Keep the 색 as a beginner.
  • Reading only the romanization. Words such as 갈색 contain a tense sound.

How Does the Review Schedule Work?

The deck uses a simplified Leitner system with five boxes. A new card starts in box 1. Each Got it moves it up one box, and each Not yet returns it to box 1. The box sets how long the card waits before it is due again.

Box Wait until the next review
1 same session or 10 minutes
2 1 day
3 3 days
4 7 days
5 21 days

Each session shows due cards first, oldest due first, and then up to 10 new cards a day by default. A deck of 29 cards is introduced over three days at the default of 10 new cards a day, and the later boxes bring each card back at longer gaps. Progress is saved only in this browser, so clearing site data deletes it. Use the export button to save a small JSON file with card IDs, boxes and due dates, and import it on another device. Cultural and Practical Context

Traditional Korean thinking uses five directional colors, called 오방색, and they appear in hanbok, palace painting and festival design. The lesson names them as blue, red, yellow, white and black.

Limits of This Deck

The deck holds 29 words and teaches the noun forms of colors, not their adjective forms in detail. Color words cover different ranges in different languages, so an English gloss is only a guide. All Korean text is generated and was reviewed and signed off by Min-ji Park on 15 October 2026.

Next Steps after This Deck

The words and letters on these cards are explained in the Colors in Korean lesson, so read it first if a card is new. This deck is one of the Korean vocabulary flashcards on the site, so browse the full list if you want a different topic. When these cards feel easy, move on to Days of the week in Korean flashcards to keep the same routine. If a word here still feels shaky, go back to Countries in Korean flashcards for the earlier material. After a session, write the same words by hand with the Korean nature vocabulary worksheet. To check what you recalled, take the Colors in Korean quiz next. All flashcard decks, including Hangul, vocabulary, phrases, grammar and TOPIK, are listed on the Korean flashcards hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is the Difference between 빨간색 and 빨강?

빨간색 is the noun made with 색, and it is the form in this deck. 빨강 is a shorter noun that also means red. Both are common, and the deck uses the 색 form from the lesson.

Do I Say 하얀색 or 흰색?

Both are used for white. The deck uses 하얀색, which matches the lesson.

Why Is the Green Light 파란불?

The word 파란 can cover green as well as blue, so the go signal is called 파란불.

Is 투명 a Color?

It is a description, not a color. 투명 means clear or transparent, and 유리는 투명해요 means Glass is transparent.

Is My Progress Saved If I Close the Page?

Yes, in the same browser on the same device. Card boxes and due dates are stored locally and nothing is sent to a server. Clearing site data, using a private window or switching browsers removes them, so use the export button to keep a backup file. No account is needed.
