The price is a story detail, not a statement about real cafe prices. Ten sentences is enough to practise the full ordering sequence once. The next section explains what makes the text easy and where it gets harder.

What Makes This Story Easy or Hard to Read?

The story is easy because nearly every sentence follows one frame, subject + object + verb, and because the drink names are loanwords you can already say. It is harder in four places: the counter phrase, the formal staff line, the price and two sound changes.

Feature In the story Note
Sentence frame 저는 카드로 계산해요 Verb always last
Counter phrase 한 잔 Number shortens before the counter
Formal line 주문하시겠어요? Recognition only; the respectful form staff use to customers
Price 사천 원 Sino-Korean number 사천 (4,000) plus 원
Sound changes 앉아요 [안자요], 맛있어요 [마시써요] The final consonant moves to the next block

The formal line 주문하시겠어요? is the respectful form staff use to a customer. You only need to recognise it. Your own line is the plain polite 주세요, which is correct in every cafe.

Words to Preview before Reading

Preview the words in the table, because they carry the meaning of several sentences. Match each word to its sentence number and let the story do the rest.

Word Revised Romanization Meaning Sentence
주문해요 jumunhaeyo order (food or drink) 2
직원 jigwon staff member 3, 5
말해요 malhaeyo say, speak 3, 4, 5
아이스 aiseu iced 4
한 잔 han jan one cup 4
주세요 juseyo please give 4
계산해요 gyesanhaeyo pay, calculate 6
잠시 후에 jamsi hue after a moment 7
창가 changga window side 9
앉아요 anjayo sit 9
정말 jeongmal really 10

Romanization is only a reading aid here. Hear two of them before you start.

Reading the Story in Three Passes

Read the story three times, each pass with a single job.

  1. Pass 1: read silently. Find the two amounts in the text: 한 (one) and 사천 (4,000). Do not look anything up.
  2. Pass 2: read with the table. Check only the words you could not guess, then re-read the Korean sentence before looking at the English.
  3. Pass 3: read aloud as two voices. Read the narrator lines in a flat voice. Read the staff line and the customer line as if you were speaking to someone.

Try the two dialogue lines with the audio and then without it.

Use them as a model, then say the order in your own voice. The idea is the same one used in extensive reading: finish an easy text and read it again.

Grammar Patterns in the Story

Five patterns carry the story. Each can be spotted by its ending.

Pattern Example What it does
Drink + number + counter + 주세요 아이스 아메리카노 한 잔 주세요 order something
Place + 에서 카페에서 where an action happens
Place + 에 카페에 가요 where you go
Tool + 로 카드로 by means of (card)
Subject + 이/가 직원이, 커피가 marks who or what does it

For the counter phrase, remember that native numbers shorten before a counter: 하나 becomes 한, 둘 becomes 두, 셋 becomes 세 and 넷 becomes 네. The Korean counters for food page covers 잔 and the other drink and food counters. The particle 로 attaches to a vowel-final noun like 카드 directly.

Worked Example: Reading the Order Sentence

The order sentence is 아이스 아메리카노 한 잔 주세요. Read it in four chunks.

  1. 아이스: iced. A loanword from English, so you can read it by sound.
  2. 아메리카노: americano. Also a loanword.
  3. 한 잔: one cup. 한 is the number one before a counter, and 잔 is the counter for cups and glasses.
  4. 주세요: please give. The polite request that ends the order.

아이스 아메리카노 한 잔 주세요.

aiseu amerikano han jan juseyo

One iced americano, please.

커피가 정말 맛있어요.

keopiga jeongmal masisseoyo

The coffee is really good.

To order a different drink, swap the first part and keep the rest. Replace the two loanwords with 따뜻한 라떼 for a warm latte, or change 한 to 두 for two cups.

What Mistakes Do Learners Make with This Story?

Learners often make four mistakes with this text.

Learners often assume Actually Because
하나 잔 is one cup Say 한 잔 Numbers shorten before a counter
주세요 means "I want" It means "please give" It is a request, not a statement of wanting
앉아요 is said as written It is said [안자요] The final cluster ㄵ splits: ㅈ moves to the next block
아이스 means ice cubes It means iced (a drink type) 얼음 is the word for ice itself

The first error is common, because learners meet 하나 before the short forms. The last is the most useful to fix, because it lets you ask for more ice with 얼음 좀 더 주세요.

This easy Korean story at the cafe covers one ordering situation. It does not teach how to ask about ingredients, takeaway or size, and the formal staff line is for recognition only. Re-reading the story once a week is a good way to keep the order pattern ready.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Is It 한 잔 and Not 하나 잔?

Native numbers shorten before a counter. 하나 becomes 한, 둘 becomes 두, 셋 becomes 세 and 넷 becomes 네. So one cup is 한 잔, not 하나 잔. 하나 is the form used for counting alone or answering how many with no counter after it. Counters always take the short forms for one to four.

What Does 주세요 Literally Mean?

주세요 is the polite request form of 주다, which means to give. Together with a thing, it means please give me that, and it is the standard way to order in shops and cafes. 아이스 아메리카노 한 잔 주세요 is please give me one iced americano. Adding 좀 before it softens the request slightly.

Is 아이스 the Same as 얼음?

Not quite. 아이스 is an English loanword used in drink names to mean iced, as in 아이스 아메리카노. 얼음 is the native Korean noun for ice itself. So you order an 아이스 커피, but you ask for more ice with 얼음 좀 더 주세요. For a hot drink, menus often show 핫, and people say 따뜻한 아메리카노.

How Do I Order Two Drinks?

Change the number and keep the rest. Two iced americanos is 아이스 아메리카노 두 잔 주세요, because 둘 shortens to 두 before 잔. Three is 세 잔 and four is 네 잔. If the drinks differ, name the first drink and its count, then the second: 아메리카노 한 잔이랑 라떼 한 잔 주세요.
