Korean School Subjects Flashcards: Study the 27 Cards

Many subject names end in 학 (a field of study) and many language names end in 어 (language), so one pattern unlocks several cards. The lesson behind the deck is school subjects in korean, so read it first if a card is new.
How Do I Use These Flashcards?
Use the deck above in four steps. It works with tap, click or keyboard, and nothing plays until you press an audio button.
- Choose a mode. Start with recognition (Hangul to meaning). Switch to recall (meaning to Hangul) or listening (audio to meaning) once recognition feels easy.
- Show the answer. Think of the answer first, then press Show answer (or Space). Turn on the romanization toggle only if you need it; the 27-card table below always shows it.
- Grade yourself. Press Got it if you answered correctly without help, or Not yet if you hesitated or guessed.
- Finish the session. A session holds up to 20 cards (you can set 10, 20 or 40). With 27 cards, a first-time learner can split the deck over three days, using the default limit of 10 new cards a day.
The Three Study Modes
Recognition shows the Hangul and asks for the meaning, which trains reading. Recall shows the meaning and asks for the Hangul, which trains remembering; you may type the answer with your Hangul keyboard or just recall it in your head. Listening plays a clip and hides the letters, which trains the ear. Listening mode only uses a card once its audio is approved, and cards without approved audio are skipped in that mode with a note.
Got It and Not Yet
Got it moves the card up one Leitner box, so it comes back later. Not yet sends the card back to box 1, so it returns in the same session or within 10 minutes. The grades are your own judgement; the deck does not score you or claim fluency.
Deck Scope: What Is and Is Not Covered
The deck covers the core subjects (국어, 수학, 영어, 과학, 사회), sciences (물리, 화학, 생물), humanities (역사, 지리, 윤리, 도덕), arts and physical education (음악, 미술, 체육), electives (한문, 컴퓨터, 기술, 가정), language names (한국어, 일본어, 중국어, 스페인어, 외국어) and timetable words (과목, 교시, 학년). School buildings and school life are in the school deck.
What Is Left out of This Deck?
School buildings, things in the classroom and school life are in the korean school words flashcards. Sports are in the korean sports flashcards, and office words are in the korean business vocabulary flashcards. The deck leaves out university majors and exam names.
All 27 Cards in One Table
All 27 cards appear below in deck order. The table is plain HTML, so you can use it as a drill without the deck: cover the Meaning column, read each Hangul word aloud, then uncover the meaning.

Reading the Table
Hangul is the word. Revised Romanization (RR) is a learning aid, so try to read the Hangul before you look at it. RR follows the sound of the word, which is why some spellings change. The Meaning column gives the English gloss, and the Note column shows the pattern behind the word or its sound. The last column lists the audio assetId; a second ID marks a slow clip.
Usage Notes for These Cards
A language is its country plus 어. 중국어, 일본어, 한국어 and 스페인어 are country names plus 어. English is the exception: 영어, not 영국어.
Ask the favourite subject. 무슨 과목을 좋아해요? (Which subject do you like?). The answer is 저는 수학을 좋아해요 (I like maths).
국어 and 한국어 are different. 국어 is Korean as a school subject for Koreans, while 한국어 is Korean taught as a foreign language. A learner of Korean studies 한국어.
국영수 is the core trio. 국영수 is the shorthand for 국어, 영어 and 수학. These three are the core of school study.
Study with 공부하다 or 배우다. 수학을 공부해요 (I study maths) and 영어를 배워요 (I am learning English). In careful speech, 수학을 공부하다 is clearer than 수학을 하다.
Which Sounds Do Not Match the Spelling?
A few subject names change sound when they are said.
- 국어 is said [구거]. The final ㄱ of 국 links to the vowel of 어.
- 음악 is said [으막]. The final ㅁ of 음 links to the vowel of 악.
- 역사 is said [역싸]. The ㅅ after a closed ㄱ sound is tensified.
The pronunciations follow the 국립국어원 (National Institute of Korean Language) standard pronunciation rules (표준 발음법), and the romanization follows the Revised Romanization of Korean (2000).
What Mistakes Do Learners Make with School Subject Names?
- Calling your learner Korean class 국어. Use 한국어.
- Calling English 영국어. The language is 영어.
- Using 수학을 하다 for "study maths" in careful speech. 수학을 공부하다 is clearer.
- Mixing up 수학 (maths) and 수업 (a lesson).
- Dropping the 학년 counter. Say 삼 학년, not 삼 년, for the third school year.
How Does the Review Schedule Work?
The deck uses a simplified Leitner system with five boxes. A new card starts in box 1. Each Got it moves it up one box, and each Not yet returns it to box 1. The box sets how long the card waits before it is due again.
| Box | Wait until the next review |
|---|---|
| 1 | same session or 10 minutes |
| 2 | 1 day |
| 3 | 3 days |
| 4 | 7 days |
| 5 | 21 days |
Each session shows due cards first, oldest due first, and then up to 10 new cards a day by default. A deck of 27 cards is introduced over three days at the default of 10 new cards a day, and the later boxes bring each card back at longer gaps. Progress is saved only in this browser, so clearing site data deletes it. Use the export button to save a small JSON file with card IDs, boxes and due dates, and import it on another device. No account is needed.
Cultural and Practical Context
The three subjects 국어, 영어 and 수학 are the core of school study and of the national university entrance exam known as 수능. A timetable lists the lessons by 교시 (period), and a student answers the question 몇 학년이에요? with a Sino-Korean number.
Limits of This Deck
The deck has 27 cards, so it gives the most common subject names and a few related words. The remark about 수능 is general. All Korean text is generated and was reviewed and signed off by Min-ji Park on 15 October 2026. The audio is generated with text-to-speech and is checked by a Korean teacher before publication, and listening mode uses only cards whose clips are approved.
Next Steps after This Deck
Continue with the korean sports flashcards, or go back to the korean business vocabulary flashcards if a word here still feels shaky. Write the same words by hand with the korean school vocabulary worksheet. The korean vocabulary flashcards page lists every other deck, and the korean flashcards hub lists all topics.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 사회 the Same as 사회학?
No. 사회 is social studies at school, and 사회학 is sociology at university. The 학 ending marks a field of study, as in 수학 and 화학. On the card, the gloss is the general word, society, and the note tells you that the school subject is social studies.
What Is 체육?
It is physical education, the lesson that includes sports and exercise at school. 체 means body and 육 means raising or training, so the word means body training. A student says 체육 시간 (PE class) when they talk about the lesson period.
How Do I Say My Best Subject?
Say 제일 좋아하는 과목 for "my favourite subject". For example, 제일 좋아하는 과목은 미술이에요 (My favourite subject is art). You can also ask 무슨 과목을 좋아해요? (Which subject do you like?). Both use 과목, the card for a school subject.
Is 컴퓨터 a Subject?
Yes. In school, 컴퓨터 can mean a computer science or computing class, and the same word is the machine itself. Context decides which one is meant. If you want to be clear, say 컴퓨터 수업 (computer class) when you talk about the lesson.
Is My Progress Saved If I Close the Page?
Yes, in the same browser on the same device. Card boxes and due dates are stored locally and nothing is sent to a server. Clearing site data, using a private window or switching browsers removes them, so use the export button to keep a backup file. No account is needed.
