What you'll learn
- Tell apart look-alike letters such as ㅓ and ㅗ, and ㅈ and ㅊ.
- Read open and closed syllable blocks quickly and correctly.
- Apply liaison, final-sound reduction and tensification to real words.
- Decode station names and three-word sentences.
- Find the cause of each error with the error log.
Before you start: you should have met all the Hangul letters and the four-pass routine in how to read Korean words. Each set takes about 6 minutes, so the page takes about 30 minutes. If set 1 trips you up, review the Korean vowels lessons first.
What Is Graded Hangul Reading Practice?
Graded Hangul reading practice is a series of reading sets in which each one adds exactly one new skill to the last. Grading means you never meet two new problems at once, so each error has one clear cause. The five sets are:
| Set | Skill tested | Item type |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Letter recognition and look-alikes | Single-letter blocks |
| 2 | Block layouts (vertical and horizontal vowels) | Open syllables |
| 3 | The seven final sounds | Syllables with a final consonant |
| 4 | Liaison and tensification | Words and station names |
| 5 | Spacing and linking in context | Three-word sentences |
The target for each set is 8 correct out of 10. A lower score is useful information, not failure: it tells you which skill to review. Next comes the method for using the sets.
How Should You Use These Sets?
Use each set in four moves: read aloud, check, log, repeat. The method matters more than the speed.
- Read aloud. Say all ten items before you look at any answer. Point at each block as you go.
- Check. Open the answer key, compare your sound with the bracketed pronunciation, and play the audio.
- Log. Write down each miss and the reason, using the error log further down this page.
- Repeat. Re-read the missed items the next day. Move on only after a score of 8 out of 10 or better.
Every item also has a plain-text answer line in the answer key, so the page works without JavaScript. For instant scoring, use the Korean Reading Practice Tool.
Hangul Reading Practice Set 1: Letters and Look-Alikes
Set 1 trains your eye on the letters that are easiest to confuse. Each item is a block with a silent ㅇ or a simple consonant, so the vowel or consonant is the only thing to read. Read the ten blocks and say their sound.

Worked example: 어 and 오 look almost the same. In 어, the short stroke is on the left of the vertical line (ㅓ, "eo"). In 오, the short stroke is above the horizontal line (ㅗ, "o"). Ask yourself where the stroke is before you decide.

The pairs follow the five confusable families: ㅓ/ㅗ, ㅡ/ㅜ, ㄱ/ㅋ, ㅈ/ㅊ and ㅐ/ㅔ. The last pair is a spelling pair only, because ㅐ and ㅔ sound almost identical in modern standard Seoul speech.
Set 2: Open Syllables
Set 2 trains block layouts with no final consonants. Vowels such as ㅏ ㅓ ㅣ ㅔ sit to the right of the consonant, and vowels such as ㅗ ㅜ sit below it. Read the ten blocks and say each sound.

Worked example: 소 is ㅅ + ㅗ. The vowel ㅗ is horizontal, so it sits under ㅅ, and the sound is "so".
Speed comes from seeing the layout first. A typical first pass takes a few seconds per block. With repetition, you start to recognise frequent blocks at a glance. You do not need to rush: accuracy is the goal for now.
Set 3: Syllables with a Final Consonant
Set 3 trains the seven final sounds. A consonant at the bottom of a block is pronounced as one of ㄱ ㄴ ㄷ ㄹ ㅁ ㅂ ㅇ, as explained in the seven final sounds lesson. Read the ten blocks, and pay attention to the three that end in ㅈ or ㅊ (낮, 꽃 and 빛).

Worked example: 꽃 has ㄲ + ㅗ + ㅊ. The final ㅊ is said like ㄷ, so the block is [꼳]. A common mistake is to say "kkoch" with a "ch" at the end. Korean never ends a syllable with that sound.
Set 4: Real Words and Station Names
Set 4 trains the sound changes in real words, including the names of Seoul subway stations. Names on station signs show the Revised Romanization spelling, which is a useful comparison because romanization sometimes hides the sound. Read the ten items, then compare.

Worked example: 홍대입구 has four blocks: 홍, 대, 입, 구. The final ㅂ in 입 is followed by ㄱ in 구, so the ㄱ is read tense: [홍대입꾸]. The sign shows "Hongik Univ.", which is an English name and not a transcription of the sound. For the other stations, the signs show Sinchon, Jongno 3(sam)-ga, Gangnam and Apgujeong. Note that romanization does not mark the tense ㄱ in 압구정, which is spoken [압꾸정]. Jongno does show a sound change: ㄹ after a final ㅇ is pronounced ㄴ, so 종로 is read [종노].
Mixing liaison and tensification is the usual stumbling block here. The liaison and tensification lessons give the full rules.
Set 5: Short Sentences
Set 5 trains reading in context. Korean puts spaces between word units, and particles attach to the word before them, so 물을 is one unit. Read each short sentence aloud, one unit at a time, and then join them.

Worked example: 물을 마셔요. The first unit 물을 has ㄹ at the bottom of 물 followed by silent ㅇ, so ㄹ moves forward: [무를]. The whole sentence is read [무를 마셔요]. You do not need to know the grammar yet. You only need to see where each unit ends.
Some of these sentences also contain the weakened ㅎ in 좋아요, read [조아요]. That rule is not tested in this set, so use the answer key to check it. After this set, move to the beginner Korean reading lessons for short texts.
Which Mistakes Show up Most?
The most common mistakes come from three causes: look-alike vowels, final consonants and linking across blocks. The table matches each symptom to its cause and its fix.
| If you read... | You said | The cause is usually... | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| 어 | "o" | ㅓ and ㅗ confused: check the stroke side | Set 1 cues, the vowel lessons |
| 옷 | "ot-s" or "ose" | The final ㅅ read as a separate sound | Seven final sounds |
| 음악 | "eum-ak" | Missed liaison across blocks | Liaison |
| 학교 | "hak-gyo" with a plain g | Missed tensification | Tensification |
| 합니다 | "hap-ni-da" | Missed ㅂ becoming ㅁ before ㄴ | Pronunciation rules |
| 읽어요 | "ik-eo-yo" | Treated the double final ㄺ as one letter | Only the second consonant moves: [일거요] |
| 있어요 | "it-eo-yo" | Dropped ㅆ instead of moving it | ㅆ moves whole: [이써요] |
Use the table after each set. The cause usually points you to a specific lesson, so you can fix one thing at a time instead of repeating the whole set.
How Do You Get Faster at Reading?
You get faster at reading by recognising frequent chunks, not by rushing letter by letter. Chunks are groups of blocks that appear together again and again, such as the polite ending 요, the formal ending 니다 and the very common 습. When you have decoded them many times, your eye takes them in as one unit.
Three habits help:
- Re-read the same set. Reading a set a second and third time on different days builds recognition faster than reading new sets once.
- Keep your eyes moving. Look at the next block while you say the current one.
- Time yourself last. Add a timer only when you score 9 or 10 out of 10 consistently. No target speed is promised here, because learners vary a lot.
Missed items belong in your Hangul flashcards, where spaced review brings them back before you forget them.

What score should you reach on a set before moving to the next one?
Show answer
At least 8 out of 10
The target for each set is 8 correct out of 10; a lower score shows which skill to review.
Scoring: 8 or more correct on a set means you can move on. For set 4, score the pronunciation, not the station name in English.
What Should You Practise Next?
Practise the sets that scored below 8 again tomorrow, then move on to reading English loanwords with a different kind of word: reading English loanwords in Hangul uses words you already know, which makes decoding easier to judge. When all five sets score 8 out of 10 or better, try the timed Hangul quizzes and the printable Hangul worksheets. For longer texts, continue with beginner Korean reading.
This page is limited to decoding practice. It does not teach the sentence grammar behind set 5 or the full list of sound-change rules. If you keep your errors in a log and re-read each set, your Hangul reading practice will move from careful decoding toward steady reading.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Long Should a Hangul Reading Session Be?
Fifteen to thirty minutes is enough for one set plus a review of the errors. Short, frequent sessions beat one long weekly session, because the goal is to make block reading automatic. Stop when your accuracy drops, since tired reading practises mistakes instead of fixing them.
Can I Practise Reading Hangul without Audio?
Yes. Every answer on this page shows the pronunciation in brackets and the meaning, so the sets work without sound. Audio is still the better check for tense consonants and liaison, which brackets only approximate. Use the brackets first, then confirm by ear whenever sound is available.
Should I Read Korean Aloud or in My Head?
Read aloud while you are scoring the sets. Speaking forces a decision on every block and exposes errors that silent reading hides. Silent reading becomes the main mode later, once decoding is quick. If you cannot speak aloud, whisper or mouth the sounds so that you still commit to each block.
Is There a Printable Version of These Sets?
Yes. The printable Hangul worksheets cover reading grids for paper practice, and this page prints cleanly if you hide the answer sections. Paper is useful because you can mark errors with a pen and compare your sets from one week to the next without needing a screen.
