Korean Counter Nyeon: the Essentials
The Korean counter nyeon (년) is the Sino-Korean word for "year" used as a counter, written with the Chinese character 年. It follows a Sino-Korean number: 일 년 (one year), 이 년 (two years), 삼 년 (three years). A counter, also called a unit noun (단위 명사), is a short word placed between a number and the thing counted. Here the thing counted is a length of time.
| Years | Say | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 일 년 | one year |
| 2 | 이 년 | two years |
| 3 | 삼 년 | three years |
| 4 | 사 년 | four years |
| 5 | 오 년 | five years |
| 10 | 십 년 | ten years |
| 20 | 이십 년 | twenty years |
| 100 | 백 년 | one hundred years |
| ? | 몇 년 | how many years |
Several of these phrases change sound, although the spelling stays the same. The initial ㄴ of 년 is affected by the consonant before it, according to the 국립국어원 standard pronunciation rules on nasalization (비음화) and liquid assimilation (유음화):
| Written | Pronounced | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 십 년 | [심년] | final ㅂ before ㄴ becomes ㅁ |
| 육 년 | [융년] | final ㄱ before ㄴ becomes ㅇ |
| 백 년 | [뱅년] | final ㄱ before ㄴ becomes ㅇ |
| 몇 년 | [면년] | final ㅊ is said as ㄷ, then ㄷ before ㄴ becomes ㄴ |
| 일 년 | [일련] | ㄴ after ㄹ becomes ㄹ |
| 팔 년 | [팔련] | ㄴ after ㄹ becomes ㄹ |
| 칠 년 | [칠련] | ㄴ after ㄹ becomes ㄹ |
These changes happen in normal speech even when the two words are written apart. A reader who wants to sound natural says 십 년 as one smooth unit, and the pronunciation brackets above are for learning and never replace the spelling.
At the start of a word, the sound of 년 shifts to 연 under the word-initial sound rule (두음 법칙): 연말 (year-end), 연봉 (annual salary), 연도 (year). As a counter, and inside a word such as 작년 or 신년, the spelling stays 년. The next question is which numbers 년 may take.
Which Number System Does 년 Take?
년 takes Sino-Korean numbers, with no exceptions for the counter. The native noun 해 ("year") takes native numbers instead, but it appears mostly in fixed phrases. In daily speech, a counted span of years almost always uses 년.
| Correct | Wrong | Problem |
|---|---|---|
| 삼 년 | 세 년 | Native number on the Sino counter |
| 이 년 | 두 년 | Native number on the Sino counter |
| 십 년 | 열 년 | Native number on the Sino counter |
| 두 해 | 이 해 | Sino number on the native noun 해 |
The native alternative is worth recognising. 한 해 means "one year", and 두 해 means "two years". You meet them in set phrases, such as 한 해 동안 ("over the year"), 한 해가 지났어요 ("a year has passed") and 해마다 ("every year"). They sound literary or reflective, so a beginner can safely skip them for speaking while still reading them. The pattern is explained in Sino vs native Korean numbers, and Sino numbers themselves are drilled in Sino-Korean numbers 1-100.
Expert insight: the same split between 년 and 해 exists for months (개월 and 달), and in both cases the Sino form is the one that spreads in formal and written Korean. If you only learn one, learn 년.
Knowing the number rule is only half the job, because the same character also writes the calendar.
What Does 년 Not Count?
년 as a counter counts only years of duration. The same written syllable 년 also names a particular year on the calendar, and it is where learners most often go wrong. A counted span and a calendar year look alike in digits and differ only in how they are read.
| Written | Read | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 3년 | 삼 년 | three years (a span) |
| 2023년 | 이천이십삼 년 | the year 2023 (a date) |
| 2026년 | 이천이십육 년 | the year 2026 |
| 10년 | 십 년 | ten years (a span) |
| 1999년 | 천구백구십구 년 | the year 1999 |
Two clues tell the meanings apart. A span of years is short and sits beside 동안, 전 or 후, as in 3년 동안 ("for three years"). A calendar year is a four-digit number that usually takes 에 or 부터, as in 2023년에 ("in 2023"). The way to read calendar years in full, with months and days, is in how to say years.
- 삼 년 동안 한국어를 공부했어요. "I studied Korean for three years."
- 이천이십삼 년에 한국에 왔어요. "I came to Korea in 2023."
Notice that both sentences use the same character, 년, but the first ends in 동안 (a span) and the second in 에 (a point). Beyond these two uses, 년 does not count months or days. Months use the 달 and 개월 counters, and ages use the 살 counter.
How Do You Use 년 in a Sentence?
To use 년 in a sentence, put the Sino number and 년 first, then add a time word such as 동안 (for), 전 (ago), 후 (later), 간 (a span of) or 째 (running, in a row). The year phrase works like an English time expression.
| Pattern | Korean | English |
|---|---|---|
| for + years | 오 년 동안 | for five years |
| years + ago | 삼 년 전에 | three years ago |
| in + years (later) | 십 년 후에 | ten years from now |
| a span of years | 십 년간 | for ten years |
| for the Nth year running | 십 년째 | in its tenth year |
| a year and a half | 일 년 반 | one and a half years |
| per year | 일 년에 한 번 | once a year |
- 한국에서 오 년 동안 살았어요. "I lived in Korea for five years."
- 삼 년 전에 결혼했어요. "I got married three years ago."
- 십 년 후에는 뭐 하고 싶어요? "What do you want to do ten years from now?"
- 이 가게는 십 년째 같은 자리에 있어요. "This shop has been in the same place for ten years."
The suffix 째 means "running, in a row", and it turns the count into a progress report: 십 년째 is "the tenth year in a row", with an unfinished span. The word 반 ("half") follows the counter: 일 년 반 is a year and a half. To ask how long, use 몇 년 걸려요?, which takes the same shape as the other time counters: 몇 년 걸려요? means "How many years does it take?", and the answer repeats the counter, 삼 년 걸려요.
Counters are only one half of talking about years. Korean also has a set of year words that need no number at all.
Which Year Words Skip the Number?
Six year words point to a specific year relative to now, and they take no number: 올해, 작년, 내년, 재작년, 내후년 and 매년. They are common in daily speech, so learn them as whole words.
| Meaning | Korean | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| this year | 올해 | native word |
| last year | 작년 | also 지난해 (more written) |
| next year | 내년 | 다음 해 means "the following year" in a story |
| the year before last | 재작년 | two years ago |
| the year after next | 내후년 | two years from now |
| every year | 매년 | also 해마다 |
| new year | 새해 | also 신년 |
You can combine them with counters: 작년에 일 년 동안 한국어를 배웠어요 means "Last year I studied Korean for a year", a sentence with one year word and one counted span. Spell 작년 and 내년 as one word, and write 새해 as one word too. When you want a fixed number of years ago, use 전: 삼 년 전 is three years ago, and 삼 년 전에 is "three years ago" as a time in a sentence.
Tenure and Anniversaries
Korean has several ways to describe how long someone has been in a job, a marriage or a place. The three most useful are 차 ("year of"), 째 ("running") and 주년 ("anniversary"), and each answers a slightly different question.
| Ending | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 년 차 | the Nth year of | 입사 이 년 차예요. "I am in my second year at the company." |
| 년째 | N years running | 한국에서 삼 년째 살고 있어요. "I have been living in Korea for three years." |
| 주년 | Nth anniversary | 결혼 십 주년 "tenth wedding anniversary" |
| 년생 | born in the year | 구십구 년생 "born in 1999" |
The difference between 차 and 째 is subtle. 이 년 차 means you are in the second year, so you have been there between one and two years. 이 년째 means the second year is running now, and it is often used for habits and situations. A common question is 몇 년 차예요? ("Which year are you in?"), asked at work. Another is 몇 년생이에요? ("What year were you born?"), used to find someone's age group. The answer drops the century: 구십구 년생 means born in 1999, and 이천 년생 means born in 2000.
Anniversaries use 주년: 결혼 십 주년, 창립 오십 주년 ("the 50th anniversary of founding"). The word 주년 is a counter in its own right and takes Sino-Korean numbers. It is distinct from 년, which counts spans of time. Seeing the tools used together makes the difference clear.
Two Short Conversations
A new neighbour. Two people meet in the lift and ask how long they have each lived in Korea.
한국에 오신 지 얼마나 됐어요?
How long has it been since you came to Korea?
삼 년 됐어요. 이사 온 지는 이 년 됐고요.
Three years. And two years since I moved here.
그럼 이 동네 이 년 차시네요.
So this is your second year in this neighbourhood.
The first answer says 삼 년 됐어요, a count of elapsed years. The pattern -ㄴ 지 N 년 됐어요 ("it has been N years since") is common for experience. The speaker reuses the count and adds 차 for the stage.
At work. A colleague asks about experience.
이 일은 몇 년 하셨어요?
How many years have you done this job?
십 년 했어요. 지금 십일 년째예요.
Ten years. It is my eleventh year now.
정말 오래 하셨네요!
That is a really long time.
The phrase 십일 년째 uses 째 for the year in progress. The speaker first gives the completed span with 십 년 and then adds the current year with 째. Both numbers are Sino-Korean.
Worked Example: a Life in Years
A learner describes their background in four sentences.
- 이천이십삼 년에 한국에 왔어요. "I came to Korea in 2023." A calendar year, read with Sino numbers.
- 한국에서 삼 년째 살고 있어요. "I have been living in Korea for three years."
- 한국어는 이 년 동안 공부했어요. "I studied Korean for two years." A span, followed by 동안.
- 내년에는 부산에서 살고 싶어요. "Next year I want to live in Busan." A year word with no number.
The checkpoint: sentence 1 names a year and takes 에, sentence 2 reports progress with 째, sentence 3 counts a finished span with 동안, and sentence 4 uses a year word. The six slips below break one of these links.
Common Mistakes and Fixes
- 세 년 → 삼 년. 년 takes Sino-Korean numbers.
- 일 년 as [일년] → [일련]. The ㄴ after ㄹ is pronounced ㄹ.
- 십 년 as [십년] → [심년]. Final ㅂ before ㄴ becomes ㅁ.
- 삼 년 for the year 2023 → 이천이십삼 년. A calendar year uses the full number.
- 작 년, 내 년 → 작년, 내년. These year words are single words.
- 한 년 → 일 년. 한 is a native form, and 년 takes Sino numbers.
Learners often assume that 3년 and 2023년 are read in the same way. Actually the first is a short span and the second is a long number, and the reading follows the size of the number and the clue words around it. The practice set checks all of these.

What This Lesson Does Not Cover
This lesson covers counting years and the year words that go with them. It does not teach the full calendar order of year, month and day, how to say birth years in forms, or the counters for months and weeks; each has its own lesson. The nasalization readings follow the 국립국어원 standard pronunciation rules and describe careful Seoul speech, and fast speech may blur them. The tenure phrases describe common usage and not a fixed rule.
What to Learn Next
Continue with calendar years in how to say years, or go back to months in the 달 and 개월 counters. For ages, see the 살 counter, and for weeks, see the 주 counter. The Time Counters section lists every period counter in order. With the Korean counter nyeon in place, durations from one year to a century are within reach.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it 세 년 or 삼 년? Say 삼 년. 년 takes Sino-Korean numbers, so 세 년 is an error. The native number 세 does appear with the native noun 해 ("year"), as in 세 해, but this is rare in daily speech. For a duration of three years, use 삼 년 or write 3년 and read it 삼 년.
What is 해? 해 is a native Korean noun with two meanings: "sun" and "year". As "year" it takes native numbers (한 해, 두 해) and appears in words such as 올해, 지난해, 새해 and 해마다. In daily speech, counted years nearly always use 년, and 해 survives in fixed phrases and literary writing.
How do I say "for 10 years" in Korean? Say 십 년 동안, pronounced [심년 동안]. 동안 means "for, during" and follows the counter phrase. You can also write 10년간 and read it 십 년간. A full sentence is 십 년 동안 한국에서 살았어요 ("I lived in Korea for ten years").
How do I say "last year" in Korean? Say 작년 or 지난해. 작년 is the common spoken word, and 지난해 appears more in the news and in writing. This year is 올해, next year is 내년, and the year before last is 재작년. None of them takes a number, since each points to a particular year.
