      2. Change 요 to 다
      3. Add 를 after it
      4. Say 가요 with a rising tone
      Show answer

Say 가요 with a rising tone

A yes/no question in Korean usually keeps the same words and ends with a rise: 가요? A question with 뭐 or 어디 puts the stress on that word and usually does not end with a sharp rise.

Follow these steps. Each one tells you what you should see.

    1. Read the question and say any Korean text aloud once. You should see four choices.
    2. Pick one choice by click, tap or by pressing 1, 2, 3 or 4. The Check button turns active.
    3. Select Check. You see "Correct" or "Not quite", the right answer and a one-sentence reason. Select Next.
    4. After question 30, read the summary. It shows how many answers were correct in this session and links to the lesson and deck for the questions you missed.

Question order and choice order change every session. The six areas are mixed, so you have to recognise the topic before you answer.

What Does the Korean Beginner Grammar Test Cover?

The test has 30 questions in six areas. The table shows how many questions each area has and gives one example. A low result in one area tells you which lesson to review.

    Question type Count Example
    Particles 6 저 + 는 학생이에요
Polite present 5 먹다 becomes 먹어요
    Past 4 먹었어요 means "ate"
Negation 4 안 가요 means "I do not go"
Questions 5 이거 뭐예요? means "What is this?"
Be and exist 6 있어요 means "exist"; 예요 means "is"

The lessons behind the test are collected in beginner korean grammar. The matching practice is the beginner korean grammar flashcards.

How Is the Korean Beginner Grammar Test Scored?

The quiz gives one point for each of the 30 questions you answer correctly on the first try in the current session. At the end it shows a line such as "You answered 27 of 30 correctly in this session". There is no timer, no streak and no ranking, so you can slow down and say each answer aloud.

The count is not a CEFR level, a TOPIK level or a measure of fluency. It only shows what you recalled today. Your answers and score stay in your browser and disappear when you close the tab, unless you choose to save progress on your own device. With 30 questions, a score of 24 or more means you recalled most of the beginner set today. A lower score only tells you which areas to review first.

What Should You Know before Taking the Test?

Take the test after you finish the beginner grammar lessons, not before. It checks recall, not first contact. Here is a short map of the six areas, so you know what each one asks.

Area What the test asks Lesson
    Particles Pick 은/는, 이/가, 을/를, 에, 에서 or 도 Korean particles
Polite present Build the -아요/어요 form Verb conjugation
Past Recognise and build -았/었어요 Korean tenses
Negation Use 안, 못 and 아니에요 Beginner grammar
Questions Read 뭐, 어디, 누구, 몇 and rising questions Beginner grammar
Be and exist Tell 이에요/예요 from 있어요/없어요 Beginner grammar

How Do 이에요/예요 and 있어요 Differ?

이에요 and 예요 link two nouns: 저는 학생이에요 (I am a student). Use 이에요 after a consonant and 예요 after a vowel. 있어요 says that something exists or is somewhere: 책이 가방에 있어요. Its opposite is 없어요. The negative of the copula is 아니에요.

How Do 안 and 못 Differ?

안 says that something does not happen, as a choice or a fact: 안 가요 means "I do not go". 못 says that you cannot do it: 못 가요 means "I cannot go". Both go right before the verb.

    Sample Questions with Answers

    Tips before You Start

    • Take the test after finishing the beginner grammar lessons, not before.
    • Read each Korean sentence aloud before choosing an answer.
    • For a fill-in question, check the last sound of the noun before you look at the choices.
    • Treat a wrong answer as a pointer to a lesson, not as a verdict on your level.

Which Mistakes Does the Korean Beginner Grammar Test Catch?

    Four errors cover most misses.

    • Confusing the copula 이에요 with 있어요.
    • Skipping the particle in fill-in questions, or choosing the wrong form after a vowel.
    • Reading 못 as "do not" instead of "cannot".
    • Adding a past marker where the sentence has no time word, or leaving it out after 어제.

What Should You Study after the Quiz?

Drill the items you missed with the beginner korean grammar flashcards and build sentences with the korean sentence builder. Re-read beginner korean grammar for any area you missed. This test belongs to the korean grammar quiz collection, and the narrower korean particles quiz and korean conjugation quiz go deeper on two areas. For a mixed check across skills, take the korean level test.

What Does This Quiz Not Do?

The test covers the first layer of Korean grammar. It does not cover honorifics, irregular verbs, connectors such as -고 and -아서, or the formal style, and it is not a TOPIK practice test. TOPIK is the official exam; see topik.go.kr for its current format. Korean text and pronunciations are generated and were reviewed and signed off by Min-ji Park on 15 October 2026.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How many questions are in the test?

The test has 30 questions in six areas: particles (6), polite present (5), past (4), negation (4), questions (5), and be and exist (6). Most learners finish in about 15 minutes. There is no timer, so you can stop and think.

    Which topics are covered?

The topics are the first grammar a learner meets: the particles 은/는, 이/가, 을/를, 에, 에서 and 도, the polite present and past, 안 and 못, question words, and the difference between 이에요/예요 and 있어요/없어요. Honorifics and irregular verbs are in their own quizzes.

    Does the test replace TOPIK?

No. TOPIK is the official Test of Proficiency in Korean, run by the National Institute for International Education. This test is a free self-check that makes no claim about a TOPIK level. For the exam itself, see topik.go.kr, which gives the current format and dates.

Can I retake only the sections I missed?

Not yet. The test runs as one set of 30 questions. The summary lists the lessons and decks for the questions you missed, so you can review a section and then retake the full test. The narrower quizzes on particles, conjugation and tenses each test one area.

    Is the quiz free?

Yes. The quiz is free, needs no account and runs in your browser on a phone, tablet or computer. Nothing you answer is uploaded to a server. If you choose to save progress, it is stored on your own device only, and you can delete it in your browser settings at any time.

Retake the Korean Beginner Grammar Test

Retake the korean beginner grammar test a week after your first try and compare the two summaries. The reason line for each question is also a mini-lesson, so reading it twice often helps more than a fast retake. When most answers come easily, try the honorifics quiz or the level test.
