Follow these steps. Each one tells you what you should see.
- Read the question and say any Korean text aloud once. You should see four choices.
- Pick one choice by click, tap or by pressing 1, 2, 3 or 4. The Check button turns active.
- Select Check. You see "Correct" or "Not quite", the right answer and a one-sentence reason. Select Next.
- After question 20, read the summary. It shows how many answers were correct in this session and links to the lesson and deck for the questions you missed.
Question order and choice order change every session, so a retake is never the same sequence. Say each vowel aloud before you choose; the quiz rewards sound memory, not guessing from English letters.
What Does the Hangul Vowels Quiz Cover?

The quiz has 20 questions about the 21 Korean vowels. It focuses on the five trouble spots that cause most errors: ㅓ and ㅗ, ㅜ and ㅡ, ㅐ and ㅔ, the y-vowels and the position of vowels in a block.
| Question type | Count | Example of what is asked |
|---|---|---|
| Sound and Revised Romanization matching | 8 | Which vowel is "eo" in Revised Romanization? |
| Stroke direction and shape | 4 | In ㅏ, which way does the short stroke point? |
| Block position | 3 | Where does ㅗ sit in a block? |
| Compound vowels and counts | 5 | Which two vowels sound the same for most speakers? |
The matching lessons are Korean vowels, basic vowels and compound vowels. Compound vowels have their own longer test in the Korean compound vowels quiz.
How Is the Hangul Vowels Quiz Scored?
The quiz gives one point for each of the 20 questions you answer correctly on the first try in the current session. At the end it shows a line such as "You answered 12 of 20 correctly in this session", and the same wording appears in the page data. There is no timer, no streak and no ranking, so you can slow down and say each answer aloud.
The count is not a CEFR level, a TOPIK level or a measure of fluency. It only shows what you recalled today. Your answers and score stay in your browser and disappear when you close the tab, unless you choose to save progress on your own device. Vowel sounds are described with English reference words and Revised Romanization, because no letter in English matches every Korean vowel exactly.
What Should You Know about the 21 Vowels First?

Hangul vowels are built from three parts: a vertical line for the human, a horizontal line for the earth and a short stroke that marks the sky in the traditional account. The direction of the short stroke tells you the sound.
| Vowel | RR | Sound hint | Block position |
|---|---|---|---|
| ㅏ | a | "a" in "father" | right of the consonant |
| ㅑ | ya | "ya" in "yacht" | right |
| ㅓ | eo | "u" in "up", with open lips | right |
| ㅕ | yeo | "yu" in "yummy" with open lips | right |
| ㅗ | o | "o" in "go", lips rounded | under |
| ㅛ | yo | "yo" in "yoga" | under |
| ㅜ | u | "oo" in "moon" | under |
| ㅠ | yu | "you" | under |
| ㅡ | eu | "u" in "put" with lips flat | under |
| ㅣ | i | "ee" in "see" | right |
Why Do ㅓ and ㅗ Cause so Many Misses?
The Revised Romanization spelling "eo" for ㅓ looks like it contains an "o", so learners pick ㅗ. The sound is different: ㅗ rounds the lips, while ㅓ keeps the mouth open and relaxed. The same trap appears with ㅜ and ㅡ. Both are "u"-like, but ㅜ rounds the lips and ㅡ spreads them flat. Look at the stroke: in ㅓ the short stroke points left, in ㅗ it points up.
What Are the 11 Compound Vowels?
The 11 compound vowels are ㅐ ㅒ ㅔ ㅖ ㅘ ㅙ ㅚ ㅝ ㅞ ㅟ ㅢ, built by combining the basic shapes. Together with the 10 basic vowels they make 21. Most speakers pronounce ㅐ and ㅔ the same way today, as in the "e" of "bed", so spelling these two must be learned word by word. Block position follows the stroke direction: ㅏ ㅑ ㅓ ㅕ ㅣ stand to the right of the consonant, while ㅗ ㅛ ㅜ ㅠ ㅡ sit underneath, as in 가 and 고.

Tips before You Start
- Say the vowel aloud before you answer, and watch your lips: rounded for ㅗ and ㅜ, flat for ㅡ.
- Use stroke direction: a short stroke on the right or left means a vertical vowel, and a stroke up or down means a horizontal vowel.
- Treat the Revised Romanization spelling as a label, not a sound guide; "eo" is one sound.
- Retake only after a deck session so you test memory, not recognition.
Which Mistakes Does the Hangul Vowels Quiz Catch?
Vowel quizzes expose a small set of repeated confusions.
- Choosing ㅗ for ㅓ because of the romanization "eo".
- Mixing ㅜ and ㅡ, which share an "oo"-like sound but differ in lip shape.
- Placing ㅏ under the consonant instead of beside it.
- Expecting ㅐ and ㅔ to sound different in everyday speech.
What Should You Study after the Quiz?
Practise recall with the Hangul vowels flashcards, then write the shapes with the Korean vowels writing practice sheet. Hear every vowel in the interactive Hangul alphabet. The next quiz in the sequence is the Korean compound vowels quiz. If you missed block-position questions, revisit Korean vowels before you retake this quiz.

What Does This Quiz Not Do?
The quiz does not measure how well you pronounce vowels, and Revised Romanization is a spelling aid, not a pronunciation guide. English reference words are approximate, because accents differ. Mouth positions for each vowel are covered in the lesson, not in this quiz. All Korean text in the questions and answers was generated and is waiting for review by a Korean reviewer.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good score on the Hangul vowels quiz?
No score defines success because the count only shows what you recalled in one session. A practical target is to explain the reason for every answer you get right. If you miss more than a few ㅓ, ㅗ, ㅜ or ㅡ questions, review those pairs with the flashcard deck and retake the quiz after a day.
Does the vowels quiz include compound vowels?
Yes, lightly. Four questions touch compound vowels, mainly the ㅐ and ㅔ merger and the vowel ㅢ. The full set of 11 compound vowels is tested in a separate 15-question quiz, which gives each of them more room. Use this quiz as a bridge, not as a full test of that set.
Will the quiz tell me why I was wrong?
Yes. After each answer you see Correct or Not quite, the right answer and a one-sentence reason. The summary at the end links to the lesson and flashcard deck that cover your missed items. It does not rank you against other learners.
Can I repeat only the wrong questions?
Version 1 reshuffles all 20 questions in each session. To repeat only missed items, note their numbers in the summary and use the answer key on this page. Then drill those items with flashcards, which do schedule repeats in later sessions.
Is there audio in the vowels quiz?
Some questions have an optional replay button that plays the syllable or word in the question. Audio never starts by itself, and clips are generated recordings approved by Min-ji Park on 15 October 2026. If a clip is not available, the button is hidden and the question still works.
Retake the Hangul Vowels Quiz
Retake the hangul vowels quiz after you have studied the missed pairs, and compare the two summaries. Progress shows when the same questions flip from wrong to right without help. The compound vowels quiz is the natural next step because it builds on the ten vowels tested here.
