Follow these steps. Each one tells you what you should see.
- Read the question and say any Korean text aloud once. You should see four choices.
- Pick one choice by click, tap or by pressing 1, 2, 3 or 4. The Check button turns active.
- Select Check. You see "Correct" or "Not quite", the right answer and a one-sentence reason. Select Next.
- After question 15, read the summary. It shows how many answers were correct in this session and links to the animals lesson and the deck for the questions you missed.
Question order and choice order change every session, so a retake is never the same sequence. Animal names are given with Revised Romanization in the prompts, and the reason line shows the spoken form where it differs from the spelling.
What Does This Korean Animal Quiz Cover?
The quiz has 15 questions. Eleven ask which animal a Korean word names, one uses a sentence to tell a horse from the word for language, one asks how 닭 sounds, and two test the counter 마리. The animals are 개, 고양이, 새, 말, 토끼, 강아지, 소, 돼지, 닭, 호랑이, 곰, 코끼리 and 물고기.
| Question type | Count | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Which animal is this word? | 11 | What is 고양이 (goyangi)? |
| Sentence decides the meaning | 1 | 말을 타요: what is 말 here? |
| How does the word sound? | 1 | 닭 [닥] |
| Counter 마리 | 2 | 고양이 두 마리 |
The lesson behind the quiz is animals in korean, which lists 50 words with Revised Romanization, audio and an example sentence. The quiz uses 13 animals from the pets, farm, wild-animal and sea groups.
How Is the Korean Animal Quiz Scored?
The quiz gives one point for each of the 15 questions you answer correctly on the first try in the current session. At the end it shows a line such as "You answered 12 of 15 correctly in this session". There is no timer, no streak and no ranking, so you can slow down and say each answer aloud.
The count is not a CEFR level, a TOPIK level or a measure of fluency. It only shows what you recalled today. Your answers and score stay in your browser and disappear when you close the tab, unless you choose to save progress on your own device. The counter questions use the native numbers 한, 두, 세 and 네, which the reason line names whenever they appear.
Which Animal Words Should You Know before You Start?

Learn the animals in small groups. The table lists the thirteen the quiz uses, in the groups the lesson uses.
| Group | Korean | Revised Romanization | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pets | 개 | gae | dog |
| Pets | 강아지 | gangaji | puppy; pet dog |
| Pets | 고양이 | goyangi | cat |
| Pets | 토끼 | tokki | rabbit |
| Farm | 소 | so | cow; ox |
| Farm | 돼지 | dwaeji | pig |
| Farm | 닭 | dak | chicken |
| Farm | 말 | mal | horse |
| Wild | 호랑이 | horangi | tiger |
| Wild | 곰 | gom | bear |
| Wild | 코끼리 | kokkiri | elephant |
| Birds and sea | 새 | sae | bird |
| Birds and sea | 물고기 | mulgogi | fish |
All thirteen are counted with the same word, 마리. Animal words are short, so the counter does a lot of work in a sentence.
How Do You Count Animals with 마리?
A counter is a small word that follows a number and says what kind of thing you are counting. For animals the counter is 마리 (mari), and it takes the native Korean numbers. The numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4 shorten before it.
| Number | With 마리 | Revised Romanization | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 한 마리 | han mari | 강아지 한 마리 |
| 2 | 두 마리 | du mari | 고양이 두 마리 |
| 3 | 세 마리 | se mari | 새 세 마리 |
| 4 | 네 마리 | ne mari | 물고기 네 마리 |
Two traps wait here. The general counter 개 is for objects, not animals. And the word 개 also means dog, so 개 한 마리 is one dog and 사과 한 개 is one apple. Never use 명, the counter for people, for animals.

- Say tense sounds in 토끼 and 코끼리 with a short, sharp ㄲ and no puff of air.
Which Mistakes Does the Korean Animal Quiz Catch?
Four errors cover most misses.
- Using the general counter 개 for animals instead of 마리.
- Using 명, the people counter, for pets.

What Does This Quiz Not Do?
The quiz covers 13 animals and one counter. It does not test birds, insects or sea animals beyond 새 and 물고기, or animal sounds. It does not teach the honorific counter 분 or the words for animal groups. Colloquial speech may use different words than the textbook ones. All Korean text in the questions and answers was generated and is waiting for review by a Korean reviewer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the quiz test the counter 마리?
Animal words are almost always used with a counter in real sentences, so learning the animal alone is only half the job. 마리 is the standard counter for animals, and the quiz also shows why the general counter 개 and the people counter 명 do not work.
Does the quiz use audio?
Most questions have a replay button for the Korean word or phrase. If a clip is missing, the replay button is hidden and the question still works as text.
Is 개 the dog or the counter?
It is both. As a noun, 개 is the dog: 개가 있어요 means there is a dog. As a counter, it follows a number and counts objects: 사과 세 개. For dogs themselves, use 마리: 개 두 마리. The sentence tells you which meaning applies.
Which animals are not in the quiz?
The quiz leaves out most wild animals, insects, birds and sea animals, such as the deer, the butterfly and the whale, to keep to the words you need first. The full animals lesson lists 50 words in groups, with audio and an example sentence for each.
Is the quiz free?
Yes. The quiz is free, needs no account and runs in your browser on a phone, tablet or computer. Nothing you answer is uploaded to a server. If you choose to save progress, it is stored on your own device only, and you can delete it in the settings at any time.
Retake the Korean Animal Quiz
Retake the korean animal quiz once you can say a number plus 마리 for each of the animals in the table above. The reason line for each question is also a mini-lesson, so reading it twice often helps more than a fast retake. When the animals feel easy, move on to food.
