Korean Drama Vocabulary at a Glance
Most learners meet Korean through a screen, and this list gives names to what is on it. It holds 40 words in five groups of eight and works as the hub of the Movies and TV section inside Hobbies and Leisure. The first group names the kinds of programme and the people in them. The second names genres. The third and fourth follow a viewer: first to the cinema, then to a streaming app. The last group covers how people rate and reward what they watched.
| Group | Words | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Movie and TV words | 8 | Kinds of programme and the people in them |
| Genres | 8 | Kinds of story |
| Cinema | 8 | Going to see a film |
| Streaming | 8 | Watching at home |
| Awards and reviews | 8 | Rating and discussing what you watched |
Korean separates three things that English often calls "a show". A 영화 is a film, a 드라마 is a scripted TV series, and an 예능 is an entertainment programme such as a game or talk show. Keeping the three apart makes menus and search results far easier to read. If you want the wider set of drama-related slang, honorifics and culture notes, the K-drama words page goes further, and the single-word page for drama in Korean explains the word itself.
Which Movie and TV Words Should You Learn First?

Learn 영화, 드라마, 자막, 배우 and 추천 first. With those five you can name what you watch, ask for subtitles, name who is in it and ask a friend for a suggestion. A useful opening line is 재미있는 드라마 추천해 주세요 (Please recommend a fun drama). Streaming menus use the same words, so you will see them every time you open an app.
- Words to say. 영화, 드라마, 배우, 자막, 추천. These work in conversation and on menus.
- Words to recognise. 예매, 매진, 구독, 다시보기, 시청률. You read these on ticket apps, streaming pages and the news.
- Words to add later. 사극, 스릴러, 흥행, 수상. They make your opinions about a drama more precise.

Movie and TV Words
This group names the programmes and the people who make them. Three of the words are loanwords (드라마, 다큐멘터리 and 애니메이션), and five are Sino-Korean words for films and the people in them. The word 예능 is short for 예능 프로그램, a programme made for entertainment.
| No. | Hangul | Revised Romanization | Meaning and note | Example sentence | Audio assetId |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 영화 | yeonghwa | movie; film. Watch it with 보다. Count films with 편: 영화 한 편. | 어제 한국 영화를 봤어요. (I watched a Korean movie yesterday.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-1; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-41 |
| 2 | 드라마 | deurama | TV drama. A scripted series on TV or a streaming service. Watch it with 보다. | 이 드라마는 정말 재미있어요. (This drama is really fun.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-2; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-42 |
| 3 | 예능 | yeneung | variety show. Short for 예능 프로그램. A separate page covers variety shows in depth. | 저는 예능을 보면서 한국어를 배워요. (I learn Korean while watching variety shows.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-3; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-43 |
| 4 | 다큐멘터리 | dakyumenteori | documentary. Often shortened to 다큐. | 다큐멘터리는 정보가 많아요. (Documentaries have a lot of information.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-4; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-44 |
| 5 | 애니메이션 | aenimeisyeon | animation. Often shortened to 애니. It covers both animated films and series. | 애니메이션을 좋아하는 친구가 있어요. (I have a friend who likes animation.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-5; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-45 |
| 6 | 배우 | baeu | actor; actress. One word for both. Not the verb 배우다 (to learn). | 이 배우는 연기를 잘해요. (This actor acts well.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-6; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-46 |
| 7 | 감독 | gamdok | director. The person who directs a film or drama. It also means the coach of a sports team. | 그 감독의 영화를 좋아해요. (I like that director's movies.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-7; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-47 |
| 8 | 주인공 | juingong | main character; protagonist. The lead of a story. | 주인공이 너무 멋있어요. (The main character is so cool.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-8; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-48 |
Notice the subject particle in the last example. The particle is 이 after a consonant and 가 after a vowel, so the sentence says 주인공이 because 공 ends in a consonant. Compare 영화가 재미있어요 (the movie is fun), where 화 ends in a vowel and the particle is 가.
Example Sentences
The examples use three frames. The first is noun + 을/를 + 봐요 for watching, as in 영화를 봐요. The second is noun + 이/가 + descriptive verb, as in 주인공이 멋있어요. The third is noun + 주세요 for asking, as in 영화표 두 장 주세요. Remember that 을 follows a noun ending in a consonant (책을) and 를 follows a noun ending in a vowel (영화를). Say each sentence aloud after the audio and replace the noun with another from the table.
How Do You Say Genres in Korean?
Genre words are mostly loanwords written in Hangul, so many are easy to guess. Two are not: 공포 (horror, from the idea of fear) and 사극 (a historical drama, usually set in the Joseon period or earlier). A genre normally comes before the noun it describes: 로맨스 영화, 공포 영화, 사극 드라마.
| No. | Hangul | Revised Romanization | Meaning and note | Example sentence | Audio assetId |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9 | 로맨스 | romaenseu | romance. A loanword for the genre. It comes before the noun: 로맨스 드라마. | 저는 로맨스 드라마를 좋아해요. (I like romance dramas.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-9; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-49 |
| 10 | 액션 | aeksyeon | action. A loanword for the genre. | 액션 영화는 재미있어요. (Action movies are fun.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-10; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-50 |
| 11 | 코미디 | komidi | comedy. A loanword for the genre. | 코미디 영화를 보면 웃어요. (When I watch a comedy movie, I laugh.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-11; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-51 |
| 12 | 스릴러 | seurilleo | thriller. A loanword with a doubled l sound. | 밤에 스릴러를 보면 무서워요. (If I watch a thriller at night, it is scary.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-12; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-52 |
| 13 | 공포 | gongpo | horror; fear. Horror films are 공포 영화. | 공포 영화는 무서워요. (Horror movies are scary.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-13; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-53 |
| 14 | 사극 | sageuk | historical drama. From 사 (history) and 극 (drama). A major genre in Korean TV. | 사극은 옛날 이야기예요. (A historical drama is a story from long ago.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-14; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-54 |
| 15 | 판타지 | pantaji | fantasy. A loanword for the genre. | 판타지 드라마도 인기가 있어요. (Fantasy dramas are popular too.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-15; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-55 |
| 16 | 범죄 | beomjoe | crime. Crime films are 범죄 영화. The final ㅁ is a closed hum. | 범죄 영화를 좋아해요? (Do you like crime movies?) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-16; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-56 |
The sentence 범죄 영화를 좋아해요? in the last row is a yes/no question, so the voice rises at the end. Compare it with 어떤 영화를 좋아해요? (What kind of movie do you like?), where the question word 어떤 carries the stress and the end of the sentence does not climb sharply. Both are good small-talk questions for a new friend.
Cinema
Going to the cinema in Korea usually starts on an app. You pick a film, choose a seat and book ahead, and the screen tells you when a show is sold out. The words in this group follow that order: place, ticket, booking, seat, snack, showing, release and sold out.
| No. | Hangul | Revised Romanization | Meaning and note | Example sentence | Audio assetId |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 17 | 극장 | geukjang | movie theater; theater. Said [극짱]. A second word for cinema, beside 영화관. It also names a stage theater. | 극장에서 영화를 봐요. (I watch a movie at the theater.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-17; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-57 |
| 18 | 영화표 | yeonghwapyo | movie ticket. From 영화 (movie) and 표 (ticket). Count tickets with 장. | 영화표 두 장 주세요. (Two movie tickets, please.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-18; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-58 |
| 19 | 예매 | yemae | advance booking. 예매하다 means to book ahead. | 영화표를 미리 예매했어요. (I booked the movie ticket in advance.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-19; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-59 |
| 20 | 좌석 | jwaseok | seat. The seat you choose when you book. | 좌석을 선택해 주세요. (Please choose a seat.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-20; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-60 |
| 21 | 팝콘 | papkon | popcorn. A loanword. The final ㅂ of 팝 is closed, not released. | 영화관에서 팝콘을 사요. (I buy popcorn at the movie theater.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-21; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-61 |
| 22 | 상영 | sangyeong | screening; showing. 상영하다 is the verb. 상영 시간 is the showtime or running time. | 이 영화는 오늘 오후에 상영해요. (This movie is showing this afternoon.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-22; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-62 |
| 23 | 개봉 | gaebong | release (of a film). 개봉하다 means that a film opens in cinemas. | 그 영화는 다음 주에 개봉해요. (That film opens next week.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-23; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-63 |
| 24 | 매진 | maejin | sold out. 매진되다 means to sell out. | 표가 벌써 매진이에요. (The tickets are already sold out.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-24; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-64 |
A typical booking in Korean takes four words: 영화 (the film), 시간 (the time), 좌석 (the seat) and 예매 (the booking). If the app shows 매진, the showing is sold out and you need to choose another time. The everyday word for a cinema, 영화관, is in the Hobbies and Leisure list.
How Do You Say Streaming in Korean?
Streaming words are what you see in apps and on subtitled clips. Most are Sino-Korean or loanwords, and several end in a pattern you can reuse: noun + 하다 gives a verb (구독하다, 시청하다). 정주행 is informal slang, so keep it for friends.
| No. | Hangul | Revised Romanization | Meaning and note | Example sentence | Audio assetId |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 25 | 구독 | gudok | subscription. 구독하다 means to subscribe. Said [구독]. | 저는 스트리밍 서비스를 구독해요. (I subscribe to a streaming service.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-25; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-65 |
| 26 | 시청자 | sicheongja | viewer. From 시청 (watching) and 자 (person). The audience of a programme. | 시청자들이 이 드라마를 많이 봐요. (Viewers watch this drama a lot.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-26; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-66 |
| 27 | 다시보기 | dasibogi | replay; watch again. The replay of a programme after it airs. Written as one word on menus. | 놓친 드라마는 다시보기로 봐요. (I watch dramas I missed through replay.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-27; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-67 |
| 28 | 자막 | jamak | subtitles; captions. Ask 한국어 자막 있어요? to find Korean subtitles. | 영어 자막이 있어요? (Are there English subtitles?) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-28; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-68 |
| 29 | 더빙 | deobing | dubbing. Foreign voices replaced with another language. | 한국어 더빙은 없어요. (There is no Korean dubbing.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-29; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-69 |
| 30 | 시즌 | sijeun | season (of a series). A season of a show, not of the year. | 새 시즌이 곧 나와요. (A new season is coming out soon.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-30; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-70 |
| 31 | 정주행 | jeongjuhaeng | binge-watching a series from the start. Informal. 정주행하다 means to watch a whole series in order. | 주말에 드라마를 정주행했어요. (I binge-watched a drama over the weekend.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-31; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-71 |
| 32 | 화면 | hwamyeon | screen; picture. The display, or the image on it. | 화면이 너무 작아요. (The screen is too small.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-32; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-72 |
Two small habits help here. First, ask for subtitles by language: 영어 자막 (English subtitles), 한국어 자막 (Korean subtitles). Second, learn the 다시보기 button, because many apps show it beside live programmes. Korean learners often watch a drama with Korean subtitles on to connect the spoken sound with the written Hangul.
Awards and Reviews
The last group is for opinions and results. People rate a drama with a score (평점), write a short review (후기 or 리뷰), recommend it (추천) and follow the viewer numbers (시청률). Prizes (수상) and box-office success (흥행) close the list.
| No. | Hangul | Revised Romanization | Meaning and note | Example sentence | Audio assetId |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 33 | 평점 | pyeongjeom | rating; score. The score viewers give a film or drama. | 이 영화는 평점이 높아요. (This movie's rating is high.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-33; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-73 |
| 34 | 후기 | hugi | review (written after watching). Comments written after watching or buying something. | 영화 후기를 읽어요. (I read movie reviews.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-34; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-74 |
| 35 | 리뷰 | ribyu | review. A loanword. 후기 and 리뷰 are often interchangeable. | 리뷰를 보고 영화를 골랐어요. (I chose the movie after reading the reviews.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-35; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-75 |
| 36 | 추천 | chucheon | recommendation. 추천하다 means to recommend. | 재미있는 드라마를 추천해 주세요. (Please recommend a fun drama.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-36; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-76 |
| 37 | 시청률 | sicheongnyul | viewer ratings. Said [시청뉼]. The share of viewers watching a programme. | 이 드라마는 시청률이 높아요. (This drama has high viewer ratings.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-37; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-77 |
| 38 | 시상식 | sisangsik | awards ceremony. 시상 (giving prizes) + 식 (ceremony). | 시상식을 텔레비전으로 봐요. (I watch the awards ceremony on TV.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-38; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-78 |
| 39 | 수상 | susang | winning an award. 수상하다 means to win an award. | 그 배우가 수상했어요. (That actor won an award.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-39; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-79 |
| 40 | 흥행 | heunghaeng | box-office success. 흥행하다 means to be a hit. | 이 영화는 크게 흥행했어요. (This movie was a big hit.) | au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-40; example: au-pg-vocabulary-hobbies-movies-tv-80 |
Ratings numbers change, so this page gives no figures. If you want to know how a particular drama is doing, look at the rating page of the app or site you use, and compare 평점 (viewer score) with 시청률 (the share of the TV audience). They measure different things.
Which Counter Goes with Movies and Dramas?
Korean counts screen items with small words called counters. A counter is a word that goes after a number and tells what kind of thing you are counting. Three are useful here.
| Counter | Counts | Number type | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| 편 | films and single programmes | native Korean (한, 두, 세) | 영화 한 편 (one film) |
| 회 | episodes and episode numbers | Sino-Korean (일, 이, 삼) | 드라마 십육 회 (episode 16 of a drama) |
| 장 | tickets and sheets | native Korean (한, 두, 세) | 영화표 두 장 (two tickets) |
The number type changes with the counter, so 영화 한 편 is correct and 영화 일 편 is not. The same counters appear on the counters page, where you can practise the others.
How Do You Pronounce These Words?
Movie and TV words contain several sounds that English speakers often miss. The Hangul shows the written form, while the spoken form shifts where one sound meets another. Standard pronunciation follows the National Institute of Korean Language (국립국어원) rules, and the romanization follows the Revised Romanization of Korean, which writes double-letter tense consonants but does not show tensing caused by a neighbouring sound.
| Spelling | Sounds like | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| 극장 | [극짱] | After a final ㄱ, ㅈ becomes tense [ㅉ]. |
| 시청률 | [시청뉼] | The ㄹ after the final ㅇ is said [ㄴ]. |
| 한국어 자막 | [한구거 자막] | The final ㄱ of 한국 links to the vowel of 어. |
| 놓친 | [녿친] | A final ㅎ is said as [ㄷ] before another consonant. |
| 팝콘 | [팝콘] | No change, but the final ㅂ of 팝 is closed and not released. Do not add a vowel after it. |
Foreign names for genres keep their vowels clear. 스릴러 has a doubled l sound that is a single long l, and 로맨스 is said ro-maen-seu with a flat 으 at the end, not "romance". The 애 in 애니메이션 is close to the e in "bed", then "ni-me-i-syeon". Listen to the clips before you copy them.
Audio and Slow Playback
Every headword and every example sentence has its own audio. The five clips below replay the hardest words slowly. Play one, repeat it aloud, then play it again and compare.
What Mistakes Do Learners Make with Movie and TV Words?
Five mistakes appear often.
- Calling every screen story a 드라마. A 드라마 is a TV series. A film is a 영화, and a cartoon series is 애니메이션.
- Reading 배우 as "to learn". The noun 배우 means actor. The verb to learn is 배우다 and always ends in 다. Context makes the difference: 배우가 연기해요 (the actor acts) against 한국어를 배워요 (I learn Korean).
- Counting tickets with 개. Tickets are counted with 장, as in 영화표 한 장. Using 개 is understood, but it sounds like counting objects in general.
- Using 시청 for the cinema. 시청 is about watching on TV or a screen at home. At the cinema the natural verb is 보다: 극장에서 영화를 봐요.
- Mixing 후기 and 평점. 후기 is written comments, and 평점 is the score. A good review has both: 평점이 높고 후기가 좋아요 (the rating is high and the reviews are good).
If you only fix one, fix the counter. Saying 영화표 두 장 instead of 두 개 is a small change that makes a Korean cinema counter understand you at once.
Practice: Flashcards and Worksheet
Study in three steps. First, run the flashcard deck in recognition mode until you recognise all 40 words. Second, switch to listening mode and answer from the audio alone. Third, take the quiz. The deck covers all 40 words with audio, and your progress stays in your browser. The vocabulary flashcard decks page lists the other decks.

Frequently Asked Questions
How Do You Say Movie in Korean?
Movie is 영화 (yeonghwa). Watch one with the verb 보다: 영화를 봐요 (yeonghwareul bwayo) means "I watch a movie". The word 영화 is also the word for film as an art, as in 한국 영화 (Korean cinema). Press the audio button to hear it.
How Do You Pronounce 드라마 (deurama)?
Say deu-ra-ma in three even beats. The first vowel ㅡ is flat, with lips spread and not rounded, so 드 is not "doo". The ㄹ between two vowels is a quick tap of the tongue, close to the middle sound of "butter" in American English. Use the audio for the exact rhythm.
How Many Movie and TV Words Should I Learn First?
Five first: 영화, 드라마, 자막, 배우 and 추천. At five new words a day, the 40-word list takes eight days plus review. Learn the frame 영화를 봐요 early, because it works for every screen item.
Where Can I Practise Movie and TV Words with Flashcards?
Use the vocabulary flashcard decks. The deck for this page holds all 40 words with Hangul, romanization and audio, and it offers recognition and listening modes. Your progress stays in your browser, so return daily and review the cards you missed.
Is the Romanization on This Page Official?
It follows the Revised Romanization of Korean, which South Korea adopted on 7 July 2000 and whose rules the National Institute of Korean Language (국립국어원) publishes. It is a learning aid and does not show every sound change, so rely on the Hangul and the audio.
