How to Use the Korean Age Calculator

Choose Birthday when you know the complete Gregorian birth date. The date field uses your browser's date picker; its display may follow your device's language, but the underlying date is unambiguous. Enter a reference date separately. That date answers the question “How old on this day?” It can be today or another date on or after birth. Future reference dates are useful for planning birthday lessons and anniversary messages.

Choose Year when you know only the birth year. The result gives an international-age interval rather than inventing a month and day. Choose Known age to work backward from an international, year or traditional age. For international age, tell the calculator whether the birthday has passed in the reference year. Unknown birthday status produces possible birth years.

Press Calculate and read the three labels before selecting an answer. The largest number is traditional counting age, but that does not make it the relevant number for an official form. Use Say it to learn the number expression, or More for the event timeline and reference calculations. Copy exports a plain summary. Card / share offers a preview before saving or sharing. Reset removes the current input and results from memory.

How Are the Three Korean Ages Calculated?

Three methods answer three different questions. International age asks how many annual birthdays have been completed. Calendar-year age asks how far apart the reference year and birth year are. Traditional counting age follows a counting convention that starts at one and increases at the start of each new calendar year. Comparing them is easier when you keep the birthday date separate from the calendar-year boundary.

International Age (만 나이): the Birthday Test

Start with reference year minus birth year. Subtract one if the selected birthday anniversary has not yet occurred during the reference year. Do not subtract on the birthday itself. A person born on October 10, 2000 is 25 on October 9, 2026 and 26 on October 10, 2026. No fractional age is rounded up.

For February 29, this tool lets you select March 1 or February 28 as the anniversary in a non-leap year. That is a reference convention used by the calculator. The result does not resolve a legal disagreement about which day a particular institution must use. Check the institution's applicable rule before relying on that edge case.

Year Age (연 나이) and Counting Age (세는나이)

Year age is reference year minus birth year. Traditional counting age is that result plus one. A birth year of 2000 therefore gives year age 26 and traditional age 27 throughout 2026. Neither number waits for the October birthday. Both increase on January 1, 2027.

Method Calculation Change event
International Year difference, minus one before birthday Selected birthday anniversary
Year age Reference year minus birth year January 1
Traditional counting Year age plus one January 1

The difference between traditional and international age is usually one or two. It is one after the birthday and two before it. For a person already born in the current year, international age cannot be negative: the calculator reports zero completed years. These formulas explain the familiar difference without suggesting that a person has lived an extra year.

Which Age Does South Korea Use after 2023?

International age became the general statutory default on June 28, 2023. The reform made the completed-years convention clearer in civil and administrative contexts. It did not rewrite every law or remove every social use of traditional counting age. You may still encounter traditional age in conversation, entertainment reporting or a comparison between people born in different years.

The current Civil Act Article 158 is the primary legal reference for full-age calculation. The Ministry of Government Legislation explanation provides the government's context and calculator. These sources explain the general basis; an age-only tool cannot decide all eligibility conditions for a person.

Current Rules and Documented Exceptions

School-entry cohorts, alcohol and tobacco rules, and military obligations can follow specific statutory provisions. Some policies already used international age before the reform. A calculator that says “everyone uses exactly the same number for everything now” removes distinctions that still matter.

The legal reference view identifies commonly discussed thresholds: civil majority at 19, voting reference age at 18, and specified older-person concessions associated with 65. Citizenship, residency, the particular benefit and other conditions may change how a provision applies. The numbers are reference points, not a declaration that you can vote, purchase an item or receive a benefit.

For a focused explanation, read what changed in 2023. If you are filling in a document, follow the document's instructions and governing rule. If you are speaking with someone, clarify which age system you mean rather than assuming a shared convention.

Which Age Belongs on a Form?

An official form's instructions determine which age you should enter. Start with international age when the form uses the general completed-years basis, then check whether it names a specific statutory exception. Copying the largest number from the calculator can give the wrong answer even when the arithmetic is correct.

Situation Age reference to check What the calculator supplies
General civil or administrative age International age under the general default Completed years on the reference date
Civil majority International age threshold of 19 The selected 19th-birthday anniversary
Voting Age threshold of 18 plus election requirements A birthday reference, not voter registration approval
Older-person concessions Relevant provision, often a threshold of 65 The selected 65th-birthday anniversary
School entry School-entry cohort rules Birth year and age comparisons
Alcohol or tobacco purchase The specific youth-protection rule Year-age comparison; confirm the applicable rule
Insurance contract The contract's definition of insurance age A hypothetical six-month rounding reference

The sources linked in this section and the authority-confirmation section explain the legal context for these reference points. Keep the calculation and the eligibility decision separate in your notes: “international age 19 on this date” establishes an age value, while permission or entitlement can require additional facts. The next examples show how to check the arithmetic before using that value.

Can a Birth Year Give an Exact Age?

A birth year gives exact year age and traditional counting age for a selected reference year. It normally gives two possible international ages. Someone born in 2000 can be 25 or 26 on October 10, 2026, depending on whether their birthday has already happened. The missing birthday is meaningful information, so the tool shows 25–26 instead of picking one.

For birth year 2026 and a reference date during 2026, a person already born has zero completed years. The result does not include negative one. That output assumes the year refers to an actual birth on or before the reference date; it cannot establish whether a particular missing date has occurred.

Work Backward from a Stated Age

If international age is 25 in 2026 and the birthday has passed, the birth year is 2001. If the birthday has not passed, it is 2000. If the birthday status is unknown, both years remain possible. Traditional age 27 in 2026 points to birth year 2000 because 2026 minus 27 plus one equals 2000.

These reverse calculations reconstruct a year or a range. They do not recover a date of birth. You cannot use them to calculate exact elapsed days, or weekday of birth. Add the real birthday if you need those outputs.

Worked Birthday and New Year Examples

A Birthday Tomorrow Versus Today

Take October 10, 2000 as the birth date. Set the reference to October 9, 2026. The year difference is 26, but the birthday is still one day away, so international age is 25. Year age remains 26 and traditional age is 27. The next-birthday countdown shows one day.

Move the reference to October 10. The birthday test no longer subtracts one: international age becomes 26. The other numbers remain 26 and 27, and the countdown says the birthday is today. Compare makes this difference visible without changing the birth date. The changed field is the reference date; the event crossed is the birthday.

A December 31 Birth and January 1

A baby born on December 31, 2025 has international age zero, year age zero and traditional age one on that date. One day later, January 1, 2026, the values are zero, one and two. Only one elapsed day has passed. Traditional counting age two therefore does not mean two completed years of life.

This example is useful when explaining why an English translation such as “two years old” can be misleading without a named age basis. Use the three labels in your explanation. The birthday that completes the first year is still December 31, 2026.

A Leap-Day Birthday in a Non-Leap Year

For February 29, 2000 and a February 28, 2025 reference, the March 1 convention gives international age 24. The February 28 convention gives 25. On March 1 both conventions give 25. Year age is 25 and traditional counting age is 26 in either case.

Use Options to switch the anniversary policy and calculate again. Your selection should remain visible in the explanation you give to someone else. Insurance, legal and family celebrations can each have their own applicable rule; matching a family celebration date does not establish an official legal interpretation.

A January 1 Birthday Crosses Both Boundaries

A person born on January 1, 2000 has international age 25, year age 25 and counting age 26 on December 31, 2025. On January 1, 2026, the three values become 26, 26 and 27. The birthday and New Year happen together, so all three results increase on the same date.

Compare that person with someone born on January 2, 2000. On January 1, 2026, the second person has international age 25, year age 26 and counting age 27. Their international age catches up the next day. Sharing a birth year therefore guarantees the same year age and counting age, but it does not guarantee the same international age on every date.

A useful prediction exercise is to write the three values before pressing Calculate. Ask two separate questions: has the reference year changed, and has the birthday happened? This two-step check works for winter birthdays without assuming that New Year is everyone's birthday.

Why Can a Timezone Change Today's Answer?

Today is a calendar date in a chosen timezone. A device in a different country can still show October 9 while Seoul already shows October 10. If the birthday is October 10, the international-age answer can differ by one until the local date catches up. Neither answer is meaningful without its reference date.

Options shows both the device date and Seoul date. Choose the intended basis, then use Today to update the reference. A manually selected reference date stays an explicit calendar date; changing a timezone is not a request to reinterpret it as a timestamp. The arithmetic uses calendar-day differences rather than repeatedly adding 24-hour intervals, so daylight-saving changes do not add or remove a lived day.

For a historical or future comparison, enter the actual intended date. Do not assume that every reader shares the timezone of your screenshot. Including the reference date in copied results gives the comparison a stable meaning.

Say Your Result in Korean

Age phrases combine a number with an age counter. Native Korean numbers commonly accompany 살. Sino-Korean numbers accompany 세 in more formal numerical contexts. The choice of counter does not by itself identify whether you mean international or traditional age. Say it therefore lets you choose the underlying age system before choosing the sentence style.

An international age of 25 uses the native form 스물다섯 살. A traditional age of 27 uses 스물일곱 살. The calculator names the chosen basis so that the larger number is not mistaken for a completed-years answer. A birth-year introduction uses the year reading followed by 년생; it communicates a cohort rather than a complete birth date.

How Do 살 and 세 Differ?

Some native numbers change before counters. One, two, three and four use 한, 두, 세 and 네. Twenty uses 스무, while twenty-one uses 스물한. These changes explain why memorising an isolated number word is not always enough for a natural age expression. Study the 살 counter forms to see the pattern in context.

At zero completed years, the calculator shows a numerical reference rather than automatically generating an unnatural baby-age sentence. Families commonly describe young babies with months, but a missing birthday cannot establish completed months. At 100 and above, the tool uses Sino-Korean numbers with 세 because its native-number reader supports 1–99.

Build a Complete Age Sentence

A complete age sentence names the speaker and attaches the polite ending to the age counter. For an international age of 25, 저는 만으로 스물다섯 살이에요 means “I am 25 in completed years.” The phrase 만으로 makes the basis explicit; 스물다섯 supplies the number and 살 supplies the age counter. The formal version ends with 입니다 instead.

Intended meaning Korean example Age basis
I am 21 in completed years 저는 만으로 스물한 살이에요. International
I am 25 in completed years 저는 만으로 스물다섯 살이에요. International
I am 27 by counting age 세는나이로 스물일곱 살이에요. Counting
I am 26 by year age 연 나이로 스물여섯 살이에요. Year
I was born in 2000 이천년생이에요. Birth-year introduction

The word 세 can mean the native number “three” in 세 살, while the age counter 세 follows a Sino-Korean number in expressions such as 백 세. Look at the whole expression before deciding how to read it. A counter lesson helps because the same written syllable can have different roles.

For practice, choose Say it, select International and read the sentence aloud. Switch to Counting while keeping the reference date fixed, then explain why the number changes. Finally, use the formal style and notice that the age value stays the same while the sentence ending changes. These steps connect number reading, age basis and politeness without memorising three unrelated answers.

What Changes at Your Next Milestone?

A birthday milestone is the selected anniversary in birth year plus the goal age. An 18th, 19th, 60th, 65th or 100th birthday is a date calculation. It does not guarantee that a legal right or benefit begins on that date. You can also select elapsed-day goals such as 100, 1,000 or 10,000 days.

Inclusive ordinal counting treats birth as day one. The hundredth day is therefore birth date plus 99 days, while 100 days after birth is birth date plus 100 days. For January 1, 2026, these are April 10 and April 11 respectively. Choose the label that matches the celebration or record you are describing.

Elapsed Days, Months and Insurance-Age Reference

Elapsed days excludes the day of birth. Whole weeks is elapsed days divided by seven, rounded down. Calendar-month calculations clamp an unavailable day to the end of the destination month: January 31 to February 28 can complete one calendar month under this convention.

The insurance view uses a hypothetical threshold six calendar months after the selected birthday anniversary. It rounds up at the threshold and shows the next threshold date. Contracts can define anniversary or month-end treatment differently, so this reference cannot replace an insurer's clause or determine a premium.

When Should Another Authority Confirm the Result?

Confirm a calendar result when a lunar record is ambiguous, a date lies outside the supported data range, or the recorded month type is uncertain. The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute converter is an appropriate primary calendar reference. A software implementation passing mathematical tests does not imply independent calendar certification.

Confirm legal interpretation for a specific statute, benefit or disputed birthday boundary. The reference thresholds on this page link to Civil Act Article 4, Election Act Article 15 and Older Persons Welfare Act Article 26. Source reference date: October 10, 2026.

For insurance, compare the stated convention with your actual contract and ask the insurer about edge cases. For language, distinguish a numerical reading from a socially appropriate question. 나이 and 연세 explain differences in vocabulary and politeness. A numerical calculator cannot decide how familiar you are with the person you are addressing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Use a Lunar Date from a Family Record?

Choose Korean lunar birth calendar in Options and enter the recorded year, month and day. Select ordinary or leap month when the record specifies it. If the month type is unknown, compare both valid candidates. Unsupported or impossible dates need confirmation from the official Korean calendar converter.

Does Traditional Counting Age Change on My Birthday?

Traditional counting age changes on January 1 because it uses the difference between calendar years plus one. Your international age changes when you reach your birthday. These events can be almost a year apart, so a birthday does not automatically change every number shown by the calculator.

Can I Share a Result without Sharing My Birthday?

Yes. The default result text and image omit your birth date and birth year. The share preview shows the selected details before export. A clean tool link contains no form values. Remember that a stated age and reference date can still reveal approximate information about your birth year.

Why Does Another Calculator Show a Different Insurance Age?

Insurance references can use different anniversary, month-end and rounding conventions. This calculator shows a hypothetical six-calendar-month threshold under the birthday policy you select. It does not interpret an insurance contract. Ask the insurer which clause controls the calculation, especially for leap-day or end-of-month birthdays, before relying on the result.

Use Your Korean Age Calculator Result to Learn

Use the Korean age calculator to connect a date, a number system and a sentence. First explain why the international number differs from the traditional number. Then select the age you want to say and practise the counter expression. Finally, move the reference date across a birthday or January 1 and predict which values will change before calculating.

Explore the Korean age guide for the broader comparison, or try the Korean number converter for dates and other counters. Keep the reference date and age basis with your notes: those two labels make the result understandable later.
